Windows MPG's or WMV files help

How can I add the above files types to my iPod Touch?

Search the web for something like "ipod video convert". You should turn up a number of possibilities. Searching the "iTunes for Windows" forums for the same should also turn up suggestions.

  • How do you play MPG and WMV files on a MAC?

I am no longer able to play MPG and WMV files on my MAC. I have Flip4MAC, which is I think what I used to use to play them (but not sure). All I know is that I used to be able to before but now they won't play. Do I need some sort of different software or has Microsoft started making these files in a way that won't allow MAC users to play them? If anyone is kind enough to help, please explain in the most basic terms as I'm not that computer literate.

If the .mpg/.mpeg files are non-rights-protected you should be able to play them in Quicktime or iTunes. If the wmv files are non-rights-protected you should be able to use Flip4Mac. If the mpg/mpeg or wmv files are rights-protected you'll need the software or subscription that allows you to view copyrighted files.

why can't i play .wmv file in quicktime even after i download codec from windows? can anyone help me wit this please!!!!!

Have you done the obvious things to try to fix it: quit Quicktime then start it back up again, log out then back in, reboot.
Edit: Just read one of your later posts. If VLC won't play it, this is unrelated to Quicktime and Flip4Mac. Are you sure these wmv files are okay?

  • Mpg, flv and wmv conversions please help!!

    hello,
i have edited a video in hd and looking into converting the file into
    high/medium/low resolution Quicktime format
    MPEG-2 format
high/medium/low resolution Windows Media Video format
flv (by the way is that basically reference file of the Film in Flash video format??)
I believe the quicktime and the mpg2 can be done in fcp what about the others though?
or is there a better way of converting this in a batch?
i have tried mpg stream clip as its free but couldnt come accross a program similar that changes into wmv files (tried kingo but doesnt work...:(
    would appreciate your help
    thanks
    J

    high/medium/low resolution Quicktime format
Export from FCP "Using QuickTime Conversion."
    MPEG-2 format
Use Compressor. There are 3 basic types of MPEG-2 and all 3 can be made with Compressor 3 and above:
    1. Elementary Stream (.m2v) - primarily used when compressing for DVD delivery. Elementary Streams do NOT contain audio.
    2. Transport Stream (.m2t or .mts) - primarily for moving MPEG-2 content over a network.
    3. Program Stream (.mpg or .mpeg) - primarily used for automated, server based playback for broadcast.
high/medium/low resolution Windows Media Video format
For WMV, you'll need to purchase the flip4mac plugin. Once purchased and installed, it adds the WMV export option to QuickTime Pro and many other encoding applications.
flv (by the way is that basically reference file of the Film in Flash video format??)
Use a Flash encoding program or just simply export an h.264 file then change the file extension to .flv.

  • Download Helper - How to download & save .wmv files WITHOUT the video being downloaded playing on screen?

    Windows 7 Pro
    Latest Version of Firefox
    Latest Version of Download Helper
Windows Media Player and VLC are installed
When I download a video file (typically .wmv) the video begins playing on the monitor screen prior to my being able to use Download Helper to download the video and save to the hard drive. This typically results in the video stopping and playing and stopping throughout the download process because of the download speed available. There is never any issue with the final download on the hard drive.
Today I installed latest version of Firefox and Download Helper on another computer.
    Windows 7
    Latest Version of Firefox
    Latest Version of Download Helper
Windows Media Player (only) is installed
Downloaded the same .wmv file downloaded above and the video did NOT begin playing on the monitor screen. Download Helper allowed me to download the file to the hard drive WITHOUT constantly listening to the video start/stop/start/stop etc.
What option (in which program) would allow the playing of the video to be toggled on or off while downloading the .wmv file?
    Thank you.

Once the download has started, you can go to another web page. The
download should be a separate function.

  • I can't open wmv files with Lion.  Windows media player doesn't work.  Any suggestions?

Unable to open wmv files using Lion.  Windows media player doesn't work.  Are there any suggestions.
    Thanks

macfriedchikkin's reply would make sense to you if you were trying to open a camera, but if you are trying to view streming media from a web site that is a different story. It helps to be very specific about what you are tyring to do on these forums.
I belive you would go into Firefox Preferences menu and tell it  to use VLC as the application to play WMV files. I'm still running Tiger,  however, so I can't tell you if it the latest version works wel that way. The Tiger version doesn't seem to, but a lot may have changed since then. (I'm only just getting around to installing Leopard next week now that there are too may apps I can't run on Tiger. ) Perhaps someone else on this forum can better help you set  up the player in your browser.
Or you can cut out the middleman and give VLC the direct video URL:
Choose Open File from the File menu and paste in the URL of the video, say,
    http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-1
    or http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-2
Your media should play this way. Dont forget to save the playlist for later.
I'l keep investigating on my end, and yes, I'm also  encouraging certain people who are streaming windows media in to switching to a different format

  • Downloaded Flip4Mac and still can't get WMV file online to play - help!!

I downloaded Flip4Mac and still can't get this WMV file (http://www.bis.doc.gov/asfroot/snapr-webinar-12-19-2007.wmv) to play - no sound and no video. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

MSS2 is Windows Media Video Screen codec which, as noted, does not play on Mac with Flip4Mac or anything else I know of. You'll also fine Windows Media Video Image and those coming from PhotoStory won't play on Mac at all either. Not even the ancient WMP9Mac will play those.

  • Help with converting WMV files to quicktime movies for video ipod.

Is there a way to convert my movies that play with the windows media player to a movie file that Quicktime Pro can use to export to my video ipod?
I am running windows xp, can anyone help??

File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free.

  • Why won't Quicktime 7.4.1 play .wmv files when Windows Media Player will?

I am running OS 10.4.11 on a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002. When I try to play .wmv files, the following message appears: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." However, I can play such files using Windows Media Player. I have installed Quicktime 7.4.1. That hasn't helped.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I already had Flip4Mac installed. However, I re-installed it, but I get the same disappointing message when I try to open .wmv files from Flip4Mac's "Quicktime Player." Perian doesn't work either. At http://lifehacker.com/software/quicktime/download-of-the-day-perian-mac-204423.p hp I read the following: Perian is a freeware plug-in designed to enable the playback of almost every popular video codec in Quicktime.
In fact, pretty much the only major codec not supported by Perian is Windows Media Video files (WMV), but previously-mentioned Flip4Mac should take care of your WMV needs.
I'd appreciate additional comments and suggestions.

  • Help importing WMV files with 4 audio tracks....

    Hello,
I am using a PC to run a robot show. The show runs off of WMV files recorded with 4 audio tracks.
The "front" audio tracks are the left and right chanels for sound.
The "rear" audio tracks are the signals the show runs off of.
(If you want to see the show... it's here http://www.yorkmiss.com/Curtains.wmv
I run the audio files using the windows media player and as you can see... it works fine.
However, I would like to use the I-tunes player since I can then controld the show remotely using my I-Touch.
The problem is that every time I import one of the audio file into I-tunes, it converts it to a new type of file that "blends" the front and rear chanels of audio together.
I've tried every different option in the import prefrences list - and they all have the same result.
Does anyone know a way of playing the files "as-is" without converting them, or is there a way of converting them I do not know about?
Here's an example of one of the files:
    http://www.yorkmiss.com/ShowbizKylesmom_504.wma
Any help or suggestions would be welcome and appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Beth

Yes, I understand that now... but is there a way to convert to those file types while still preserving the 4 seperate audio chanels?
    Thanks, Beth

  • Why don't WMV files Act like MPG files?

I use a mid 2012 Mac Pro; run OS X 10.9 Mavericks.  When I was using OS X 10.5.8 Leopard the icons on my WMV files were flipped to show a picture of the video; just like all my MPG files.  Why doesn't Mavericks do that?  And is there a way I can flip the icons on my WMV files to show a picture again?

    How do I convert a file to a QL/QT X v10.3 compatible file?
    1) This depends on the software you have installed on your system. Basically you need to either have one of the purchase Flip4Mac products installed on your system or a conversion app that has built-in codec support and the source file will have to be unprotected. I have Telestream's Flip4Mac Studio (includes basic import and ecport codecs) so I can use QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, QT X v10.3, the Mavericks Finder level AV Convert software, or the free Flip Player to perform these conversions. If you don't have a paid Flip4Mac codec installed for use with apps that access you system QT codec components configuration, then you could try a free app like HandBreake or on of the commercial converters available for the Mac.
    2) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply open your unencrypted WMV file in the QT X v10.3 player and it will automatically be converted to an H.264/AAC MOV file.
    3) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply select one or more WMV file icons in the Finder that you want to convert and then select the Context Adaptive menu (Control-Click menu) and select the "Servoices > Encode Selected Video Files" option. This option will open a widow allowing you select a few conversion options like "High/Low" quality settings for targerted H.264/AAC display settings or the selection of the Apple ProRes 422/PCM codec best used as an inermediate codec if you plan to edit the converted file in a video editor at a later time.
    4) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply open your unencrypted WMV file in the free Flip Player and export your file(s) to app or device targeted presets.
    5) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply open your unencrypted WMV file in the either QT 7 Pro v7.6.6 player or free MPEG Streamclip app (if installed) for export to device targeted M4V, "Movie to MPEG-4" MP4, or compatible "Movie to QuickTime" MOV files (e.g., H.264/AAC, MJPEG/PCM, etc. compression format files.
    6) If you don't have a WMV support codec package installed on your system, then you can try opening the file in the Free HandBrake app and us it to convert to one of available Apple compatible presets or create a custom preset of your own. (Note: I have only used this with common WMV downloaded files like WMA 9 audio with WMV 8 video in the WMV container.)
    7) If you already have a commercial converter with WMV support built into the application installed on your system then you can use it to perform a conversion of your WMV files.
How do I create an icon manually?
    1) Basically you select a compatible image file of a compatible size and shape and drop it to the "Info" window (Finder "Command-I" shortcut) icon area. I would normally recommend a JPEG image of VGA-like dimensions and in the shape you prefer. For instance, you can export/capture a frame from your movie and convert it to a JPEG image having the same aspect as your video with a 640 pixel width at 72dpi, create a 640x640 JPEG image if you prefer a more "record" album-like icon, create aposter or DVD case-like JPEG image if desired, or anything in betweem. Just be aware that if the images are too large in an incompatible format, they will be rejected when you try to drag 'n drop them to the info window. (I.e., it would be ridiculous to try and use an 8-, 10-, or 12-megapixel image as your icon.)
    2) Where compatible, you can also assign a custom designed metadata "poster-frame" wich I believ is still used by the finder as an icon image. (Don't quote me on this yet as I have not confirmed it yet under Mavericks as it is taking som much time to just run down what is and is not still working video-wise un this new system.)

  • Flip4Mac Help with wmv files

    Hi,
I have installed the Flip4Mac in order for me to play windows media player files. It seems to work ok but I need help with one specific file.
I am trying to play a wmv file from a CD and it opens Quicktime with audio but not video. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Macbook C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Chances are the file is a WM v10 or 11 file, which cannot be played on a Mac.
However since Flip4Mac is not an Apple product, I suggest you post your question on Flip4Mac forums:

  • Trying to get Sony HDR-XR100 files (.MPG) on FCP! Please help!

I've purchase Final Cut Pro to edit video coming off of a Sony HDR-XR100 Camcorder. I can import all of the video files (.MPG) to FCP, but when I play them there's no audio.
And when I try to play them from the canvas it simply says "Unrendered."
Is my program set to the wrong default codec? How do I find the proper codec to set it to?
I was also told that there may be a plugin on the sony website to solve this problem, but I haven't been able to find anything that looks like this ...
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi -
Why don't you do a test file and see if it works for you before you do the whole bunch.
Download MPEG Streamclip and launch it.
Drag one of your mpg files to the square in the center of the window.
Go to the file menu and choose export to Quicktime:
    Set your settings like this:
    and convert a file.
Then open FCP, go to the menu Final Cut Pro > Easy Set Up and choose Format: All formats, Rate: All Rates, Use: DV-NTSC.
Then open a new project and import your test file,
Create a sequence and you should be good to go.
You'll have to find info on the batch process part.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help - out put a .WMV file - please

I have 45MB file - one hour long - 1400 x 1050 - square pixel - 29.97 -  44100Hz - 16 bit - Mono - My client needs a 30 second intro added to it - I've added the intro - no problem there - When I go to export media as a .WMV  is when I'm having problems - How do I create a lossless .WMV file( as much as possible) without much measurable increase in original file size?
    I'm using CS6 - Production Premium
I've tried several options - one file was 40 MB - Using VBR with an extremely low bit rate set - but the quality was not acceptable -
Every other option I have tried both CBR and VBR produce a file size approximately 175MB
This is difficulut to trouble shoot because it takes anywhere from 2-5 hours for the job to finish - I have a fairly decent processor i7 950 - 4 core - 3.07GHz '
AME gives an estimated file size when useing VBR - using a 100 kbs bt rate - it says it will be about 84MB - but alas the file size is always 175MB at the end.
    Flumoxed -
    Help if you can please.

    Thanks Jim,
Finally got it to spit out something acceptable -
Two things made it difficult/frustrating to troubleshoot - 1.) the estimated file size was way off  multiple times and 2.) time it takes to encode a long timeline. 5 hours more or less.  But what are ya gonna do?
This was a webinar presentation - probably somebodies powerpoint converted to .WMV - thus the bizzare aspect ratio 1400 x 1050
Here are the final Video specs - Windows Media Video 9 - VBR - constrained - 2 pass - Average peak bit rate 100Kbs - Peak Bit Rate 100Kbs - Peak Buffer 50 - and this part may have been the difference maker - KeyFrame Interval 60 - the end result a clear picture - good audio - 70MB file (the original was 45MB) -
