Windows network drive taking nearly 30 seconds to open

Hi all,
I have a batch of windows 7 professional machines that are authenticating to an LDAP server and after that mounting %APPDATA% and some other folders on startup (using SAMBA linux server). They show the content properly but when I go to Computer and I try
to open the same share that is used to mount those remote folders on boot it takes almost 30 seconds to open. And it is not happening only the first time that I open the drive.
I am sure that it is not related with the network speed, 1Gb ethernet over CISCO network.
I would appreciate if anyone can give me a hand.
Regards.

Hi samaruc,
This issue might be caused by Windows Explorer tries to obtain detailed information about the remote share and about the file that you are opening. This operation may take a long time over a slow connection.
This behavior is documented in the article below:
Slow network performance when you open a file that is located in a shared folder on a remote network computer
Please check if the method mentioned in that KB would help here.
Best regards

  • Need to search contents of text files on a windows network drive....

I am trying to search the content of a directory on a windows network drive for that contains .sas files (essentially text files) for a certain text string. Find does not seem to do this. Any ideas/suggestions?
When I copy a file to my desktop I can do it easily, but that is not an option.

Uh yeah....in my opinion GREATLY affects Apple's claim to windows compatibility......unless there is a solution out there. My firm is windows-based and we have a terabyte or so of data and files related to various stuff all buried in subfolders..and all I want is to search one folder for one text string.
I'm praying for a solution here.....

  • Mac app can't connect to a windows network drive

    loadMovie("\\\\corpflash01\\WebContent\\swf\\jkLowerRight.swf",
    portfolio_mc);
    or this
    loadMovie("//corpflash01/WebContent/swf/jkLowerRight.swf",
    portfolio_mc);
works correctly on any window's machine inside my company's
network but only when I export to a windows exe.
When I export to a mac app, and run it on a mac, I can't
locate these swfs on the network.
Is there something special I have to do to get a mac to be
able to read swfs off a network drive?
    Thanks!

*HELLO I WILL USE BOLD BELOW TO MAKE MY COMMENTS*
OK you will have to some simple things.
    1. Find a third party time Time Server that you can use both on your Mac and Windows 7. I say this because of both modern sharing systems use kerberos. If you don't want to do that (or don't know how) just make sure both the you Mac and the Windows 7 machine are set to get their Time Clock updates automatically from an internet Time sever.
*BOTH COMPUTERS ARE ON THE AUTOMATICALLY INTERNET SERVER*
    2. Read the article File Sharing: Win 7 and Snow Leopard: Introduction.
*READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE AND DID EVERY SINGLE STEP AND WHEN I INPUT THE IP ADRESS I CLICK CONNECT AND IT DOES NOT CONNECT, SAME DIALOG BOX SAYING. EVERYONE ELSE IN MY OFFICE IS USING WINDOS AND CAN CONNECT WITH NO PROBLEM*
    3. If you want to use the Finder toolbar Network pane automatically then read the Apple discussion Snow Leopard 10.6.4 not showing Windows 7 Machines on Finder's Shared.
*I DID FOLLOW ALL THE STEPS LISTED HERE WITH THE SAME RESULT. I CANT CONNECT.*
With this information you shouldn't have trouble sharing files with a Windows 7 machine.

  • Windows Network Drive Mapping properties not being associated with Test Stand deployment

I recently upgraded a TestStand/LabVIEW (Developer Suite 2012 DS1) deployment project from a Windows XP Pro OS to Windows 7 Enterprise. Now, when I run the Test Stand deployment, Network paths that used to be hard coded into my File Globals are no longer recognized. I re-wrote the vi's, and put "File Dialog" pop-ups so that I could see what path the control is being opened up at, and what appears to be happening is the Network Drive that I am defaulted to is appearing as if it is "disconnected" in the navigation window, and the path is defaulted to my root directory. I can navigate out to my network path no problem from the navigation window, and after the first time I perform this user action, subsequent executions open up to the path I have hard coded in my Sequence File Globals. However, if I reboot my host computer, I again have to go through the exercise of manually pointing to the proper network location? If I use the Windows Explorer to check Mapped Networked Drives, everything is properly mapped and connected.
Has anyone ever seen this behavior?

    Hi ATE Dude 22,
I have not come across this problem before but here is a document from MSDN and one from NI which discuss file path conventions. From what I've seen, UNC is also accepted under Windows XP so I would advise using it for your file globals.

  • Slow and crash when activity in Windows network drive

A weeks ago I clean install my Mac Pro using Snow Leopard and upgrade it to 10.6.2, I fell that connection to network drive is very slow, got crash and stuck when delete file in the network drive. I tried to relaunch the Finder but it become dead finder I can't execute the finder anymore then I have to restart my machine. And also I got Kernel panic several times that I never have any in 10.5.7. And also so many problem I got since I install Snow Leopard on my machine.
I really disappointed and just wasting my money and my time dealing with all these problems, and downgrade to 10.5 I think the cheapest way to deal with this.

    HI,
*"And also I got Kernel panic several times that I never have any in 10.5.7"*
*"And also so many problem I got since I install Snow Leopard on my machine."*
Anytime you upgrade from one Mac OS X to the next it's reallly important do check to see if all your peripherals, third party software are compatible BEFORE you upgrade your Mac. You can save yourself the problems you are experiencing.

  • Trying to run a batch file in ODI and the file is on a windows network drive.

    Hi,
I'm trying to run a batch file that is located on a windows shared drive for the ODI server. When I try to run the file through OS command by giving the file path in the "command line". I get the error "
    ODI-1226: Step fails after 1 attempt(s).
ODI-1242: Operating system command execution fails."
Please let me know if this can be done.

    Hi,
First try to execute your batch file, if it is executing as expected.
Then use OdiOSCommand tool and give full path of script and also give a path to create error file & out file.
Execute the batch now via OdiOSCommand, if it fails then you will receive error message in Error file.
Also check if you have rights to script being executed via ODI.
    Thanks,

  • CVPN 4.6.4 and Windows network Drives

    Hello:
I am trying to acheive the simplest possible configuration. We recently placed PIX with outside I/F 66.x.x.98. And we have win2003 DC and File server/wins server/DNS server all on one host with IP address 66.x.x.100. This win2003 also has an inside interface with IP 192.168.2.41.
What i am trying to acheive is once the User connects using VPN client, login to the domain, it should run the login script associated with the userID and map the network drives.
Everything is working fine, networks drives are not mapping upon login. But when i try to manually map the drives it works.
Any thoughts. I know its simple, but for some reason, its drivin me crazy.

If this is not a wireless network, this may all be rubbish!
To which computer is the Linksys ADSL cable attached? If it is the PC, than the"Internet sharing" is done on the PC, so the Apple needs to log on to an existing connection. The Linksys will probably need to be told the Mac address of the Apple so that it gives the Apple permission to log on (Airport address - same thing). The Apple will need to have the Password to log on to the network- you should have set up a WEP password when setting up the router. They also need to be on the same Network i.e. both on WORKGROUP, or whatever. You need to set your FIREWALL to allow Internet, file and printer sharing. (The XP built in firewall doesn't seem have this option).
You should see your Apple on the network, you log on to it by double clicking the icon, typing your Mac "Short name" into the "User name" slot, and your Apple's password into.... wait for it..... the PASSWORD slot
On the Apple, from Finder>go>network this should bring up a panel with a folder with your network name on it, clicking on this folder should bring up the name of your computer, clicking on this should then invite you to open folders on your PC (Assuming you've set up a shared folder(s)).
If your printer is plugged into your PC..... Have fun!
Hope this helped - I'm sure that this is the sequence I used to, eventually, get mine talking. But different routers (Mine's Netgear) and different Firewalls may have different rules, but the principle will be pretty similar.

  • Very basic Windows tasks are taking 6-8 seconds to complete on a T400 - Suggestions welcome

When I attempt to access My Computer, it takes 8 seconds before it is fully rendered.  I only have one hard drive, and a card reader.
When I attempt to access the Control Panel, it takes 6 seconds to render.
When I right click on an item, it can take as many as 5 seconds to render the right-click menu.
When I attempt to delete an item, it can take as many as 5 seconds to render the confirmation dialog.
I know one potential culprit in terms of hogging system resources is Firefox 3.  I have a number of browser windows open, and it is consuming 900,000 KB of memory.  Is there a way to constrain or fix that?  I literally have zero add-ons installed.
Here are the specs for my computer.  It's just hard to understand why my laptop is performing so slowly given these specs.  Did I just pick a bad graphics card?

I've been using the machine for two months now.  I don't think indexing is actively running as much anymore.  Rescue & Recovery is scheduled to run once a month.  I don't see Diskeeper taking up a lot of resources.
I'm starting to think it's my graphics card, or at least the driver version that it's using.  It's what making my Windows Experience performance score a 4.6.
Firefox is also a memory hog, so I guess I just have to watch the number of windows I have open.  It once got to 1.5 GB of memory.

  • Can't connect Mac to Windows network drive

I am the only Mac in a PC college. I frequently have to connect to shared folders on the PC network. For six months I could "connect to server... cifs://name" with no problems. Last month, this suddenly stopped working (error = server may not exist). My office IT people told me to switch to smb://name and it worked again for at least a day. Now I can't get it to connect at all. The finder can see the PC server in the shared pane, but it won't connect to it. "Connect to server" won't connect either, no matter how I try. I get the "server may not exist" error, the "volume won't mount" error, or the "not all data is readable" error. The local IT people say they haven't changed anything and all the Windows people are fine. As the lone Mac user, I don't think much help is forthcoming from IT here. I don't know much about this sort of thing, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I do not know if the problem coincides with the update to 10.5.6 or not.

    Karen –
Unfortunately I think that 10.5.6 broke several aspects of MS Windows support. If you were to GOOGLE ‘can’t connect to windows shares with os x 10.5.6’ you will find plenty. I personally have not upgraded to 10.5.6 because of it. Though not the best method you may want to consider using the IP address of the system you are connecting to.
    smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/<share name>
Obviously I know that this is easier than said especially if you are the only Mac on the network, I am sure the College IT group is just going to fall on their swords to help you with this or even providing you this information. With that said you may be able to get the IP by trying to ‘PING’ the server’s name. To do this open a Terminal session on your Mac and type the following at the prompt:
    ping <server name>
You should get a something like this:
    PING <server name> (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): 56 data bytes
Now let me caution you, I am sure that the college has turned of PING reply on their network you will most likely get the line above and that is it. Also depending how aggressively they monitor their network for such activities you may show up on some report. Given that I would suggest that if possible you find someone in the IT group that is somewhat sympathetic to your problem and let them know what you are attempting to do.
Not the best answer but I know that using the IP instead of the server name seems to work.
    Best of luck.

  • Hi, My mac book pro starts lag, after shut down is still the same. Every application is taking 3-6 seconds to open, if I type something in Word letter appears only after 2 - 4 seconds, Whats going on and how to fix it ?

    Very slow performance
Even after shutting it down and restarting still the same.
    Laggin a lot
    Please help!!!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
A possible cause of a slow user interface is a large set of image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons. If you have more than a dozen or so such files, move them to another folder.
Another possible cause is iCloud activity, especially Photo Stream synchronization. If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane and see whether there's an improvement.
Otherwise take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message. You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • How do I send Windows-friendly network drive links using Mail (in Tiger)?

I'm in an office with mostly Windows users (and Windows NT servers). Most folks use Windows email applications such as Outlook and Outlook Express. I use Apple Mail 2.1.3 (753.1) in Tiger v10.4.11. But I want to send links within my emails to files on our various network drives and have the receiving Windows/Outlook users click the links to automatically open the various files, but I can't get this to work. Any ideas on how to format the network links so they work this way?
I don't log into the network drives normally until I want to access things, perhaps I should. But I've tried this and still no go.

Thanks, but I've tried this in a variety of ways, none of which seem to work. So there's more detail required. Here's some background and examples of what I've tried without success.
The Windows WORKGROUP is, say, "JAMESCORP" - but what's the equivalent in Apple networking to a Workgroup? And does this even matter? It seems to not matter?
The Windows drives are mapped on Windows machines as, say, F: G: H: I: etc... But I don't know what the equivalent concept of mapping drives is on an Apple (more on smb, below). I typically don't map Windows' network drives (I use VMWare Fusion) on the Windows side since I did not like the constant Windows messages reminding me each time I'm out of the office that it can't find the Drive F:. Then it can't find Drive G: - etc. ad infinitum. What a pain.
On the Apple side, I use Finder's command-K to smb into the server that contains all the partitioned drives. In the smb list, the drive names are, say, mapp-cdrv and mapp-ddrv etc (which, in Windows map to F: and G: respectively).
So when you type "servername" - I'm lost regarding just what the servername should really be? Is it:
    a) F: (which does not work for a Windows user once it's delivered via Apple Mail to an Microsoft Outlook email) So this seems to not be the proper servername - or if it is, there's a translation happening in the delivery mechanism that makes it not work. (I "Add Hyperlink" from the Edit menu to get the link into an Apple Mail message.)
    b) mapp-cdrv (which works on an Apple, but when sent to a Windows machine's email (e.g., Outlook) does not work - so this isn't it. This servername is not something the Windows machines understand
    c) cifs://workgroup;""me@<ip address of server>/mapp-cdrv (which, again, doesn't work on a Windows machine once sent thru Apple Mail).
I've tried a variety of other permutations of "servername" - both Windows-like server names and Apple-like server names - but none seem to work once delivered the way I'm delivering the links (thru Apple Mail to Outlook.)
Any other ideas? Thanks for the help! ; )

  • Network Drive Login Item

I have added 2 network drives to my login items to mount automatically. It works great except that they mount with the drives' windows open. How do I prevent this?
This is annoying because it appears to slow the process down, and the main reason I'm automating this is for convenience and speed. I don't need to use the drives right away or all the time - I just want them mounted and available.
Other drives don't do this when they mount - why network drives?

Thanks, but that's not the issue. I want them to mount and I need to see the icon, but I don't want their windows to open when they mount.
These are Windows network drives mounting via smb. What currently happens on login is that the 2 drives mount with their windows open. The drives mount one at a time and displaying the window items adds several seconds to the process.
I shouldn't be complaining about several seconds, but it is annoying when you know you're just going to close them when they finish opening.

  • Unable to open Excel files on Windows Network

I can no longer access Excel files on a windows network drive. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting, restarting my computer and it still doesn't work. I am able to drag the files to my desktop to open it, but It will not let me save back to the network and replace the exsisting file. Says that it can not be accessed and may be read only.
It worked for me the first week I had the computer, but then stopped. All other file types open just fine.
    Please help.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Excel files can be protected by the author. That is, an 'internal to the file' flag can be set to read only.
Additionally, for files on the network, if a file was improperly closed, then the server believes the file is still in use, therefor, marks it as read only.
It's easier to do the next thing from a windows box... make sure the windows box is set to show hidden files.
Navigate to the directory in which the file is located, and check it for hidden temp files. It will likely be named
    "~actual name of file.xls."
This is an indicator someone either has the file open, or had it open, didn't close it properly, thus it is considered open.
Deleting the hidden "~nameoffile.xls" may clear the problem.

  • Excel 2007 and 2010 slow to save to network drive with Windows 7

I know this issue has been passed around and I know that there are some fixes out there. I will lay out my issue and resources, what I've tried and the things I've noticed.
I have a mix of Server 2003 32bit, 64 bit and 2008 64 bit. The desktop/laptop environment is mainly XP (no issues saving with an XP machine), a few Win 7 computers and a dozen thin clients running off the 2008 TS. The slow saving issue happens with either
a Win 7 machine or a client terminal served into 2008. It takes 60 seconds or more to save or "save as" an excel file to a network drive. Same thing happens with any Office product. No issue saving to the local machine. If you log into either 7 or
TS with the domain admin account, the saving takes no time at all. Only as a domain user does it hang.
I have tried the SMB2 trick, the 981711 hotfix, turning off indexing and starting the webclient service. I am probably forgetting a trick or two that I've seen online from various people having the same issue. Point is though, the issue remains and besides
being utterly annoying, it is preventing me from rolling Windows 7 out to my employees. Please Help. Thank you in advance for any advice posted

    Hi,
Have you tried to create a new txt file with notepad to test this issue? If this issue also happens on .txt file, you should check your network.
And I suggest all users disable their anti-virus to see if the problem goes away.
There are other things to try if the problem is evident in all of the documents you open. When EXCEL is not running, make sure you delete all the temporary files that
EXCEL may have left lying around various folders in your system. Look for files that end with the TMP extension, or files that being with the tilde (~) character. If your file folders become very cluttered with these temporary files, it can slow EXCEL down
    immensely.
Another thing to try is to start EXCEL with the
/a switch on the command line. This causes it to load without also loading different startup files such as add-ins and macros. If this fixes the problem, then you can bet that the slowdown is caused by one of those add-ins or macros.
You might also rename the Normal.dot (or Normal.dotm) file; if it is corrupted then it can slow down response times. (Renaming the file causes Word to create a clean,
fresh, empty one the next time you start the program.)

  • I can't map a network drive from Windows 7, using the exact same settings that work fine with Vista or XP

I have Windows 7  64 bit Home Premium, and I can't map a network drive.  I use a Cisco VPN client to connect to my University network, and then when I go to map the drive I get a message that it can't be found.  I have done web research it seems that I am unable to edit the local security settings (apparently you can do this in Ultimate and Professional versions), and that this may be the culprit.  Does Microsoft make some patch available?  My IT people, and the tech help at HP are baffled by this.  If Windows 7 Home Premium does not allow for mapping of network drives, then I'm dumping it and returning to Vista.  Has anybody had similar problems?

Day 2 of trying to map a drive in Windows 7 Professional:
    My journey to ____..
    Begins:
I purchased Windows 7 Home 3xuser license pack for ~140 US I kep hearing friend sayhow much faster it was than Vista 32bit so I thought hey let’s “upgrade”
.. I looked up the definition of the word “upgrade” the following is what I found:
    1.
To exchange a possession for one of greater value or quality; trade up.
    2.
    Computer Science
To replace software or hardware with an upgrade.
    3.
    Computer Science
    a.
To replace (a software program) with a more recently released, enhanced version.
    b.
To replace (a hardware device) with one that provides better performance.
So we,re all clear on what an upgrade is suppose to be. I wanted tomake sure I understood before I proceeded.
I installed a copy on my latptop Toshiba Centrino 1.83 Ghz/3 G Ram decent computer for all intent and purposes. It’s been working fine
on Vista but running slow. So I went through MS “requirements checking” to determine if my computer passed the MS test and worth of such the honor and also get MS’s blessing before I moved forward with the “upgrade”.
I proceeded with the upgrade went relatively smoothly had to uninstall a few programs but I figure that’s such a
small price to pay for such great enhancement that I will receive from my “upgrade”. Approximately 4 to 5 hours later after minimal reboots I was all set to go with my new upgraded OS. It was working as prescribed faster than Vista cleaner
interface sorta, helpful little taskbar gadgets. I was stoked that night I went to be thinking I will go to work and be a rock star on my brand newly “upgraded” computer.
Oh and by the way, I was so thrilled about Windows 7 I even upgrade my home computer as well.
I go into work and I have a very big user migration that night, I am an network engineer and I use my laptop for work I use Visio, Wireshark
and others, all the tools that help us do our job efficiently and effectively.
I sit down turn on my computer it boots faster than Vista and I’m just chomping at the bit to get going have lots of work to do. So let
go back for a minute an look at the definition of “upgrade”
    “3.
    Computer Science
    a.
To replace (a software program) with a more recently released,
    enhanced version.
    b.
To replace (a hardware device) with one that provides
    better performance.”
So were good on what upgrade is?
I have my computer up I have logged in (locally) not on a domain as I was not when I was on Vista OS. I wanted to attach the server to get some
files so I go to map a drive………………. Hmmmph ….. that’s weird I cannot map a drive …… let’s try this again……… hmmmph…. what this domain thing going here I
never need that before in the lesser product Vista but ok I’ll add my
\\servername\folder and my domain.org\username..... hit enter and hmmmmmph …. It ask me for my password again.. well I could have fat gingered it so I’ll type it in reallllllllly slow.. hmmmmmmph ….. again no such luck…
So I decide consult a colleague of mine who recommended I “upgrade” to Windows 7. After speaking with me he tells me oh! You need
Windows 7 Professional to do the same things you did in Vista home … I’m perplexed by this but let’s once more take a look at the word “upgrade” to “enhance
    and/or make better
”. So now I’m a little perturbed by this little bit of information but I suck it up and decide I’ll drop another ~100.00 US on an “upgrade” to Professional small price to pay for such a great product.. I mean have
    you seen those commercial WOW!
I make my purchase download and once “upgrade” to new “upgrade” with even more improvement over Vista and XP I mean
with those two OS’s it took me all of 5 second to map a drive SURELY Windows 7 Professional will map a drive like no one business.
    After
few reboots my computer has been fully “upgraded” and ‘upgrade” again to W7 Pro and I’m off to the races ready to get to work cause my migration will be starting in a few hours and I want to be prepared. Sytsem reboots quickly
I’m logged and ready to start getting my information I so desperately need. I go to map my drive I figure I’ll help W7Pro out I’ll be proactive and use “domain.org\username” that way W7Pro
will like me and think oh! this man is brilliant. I hit enter with my correct password that I type realllllly slow. …… waited it’s thinking for sure this is it .. the anticipation is killing me the excitement is overwhelming …….
THUD my world just came crashing down ..no luck .. no login ..no mapping drives…I’m now on hour 6 of this ridiculous journey to the “upgrade” to “upgrade” ____. So now I’m left to forum because MS surely does not
think I am going to pay them $275.00 and hour for support on something that should have work right out of the box.
So I’m on day to I have tried everything on this forum page to get my mapped drive to work with nothing working for me. It appears that
if I want to use my computer I will have to rolled back to the lesser (Vista).
Just in case you’re wondering how I made it through the user migration. I had my co-worker bring me my XP computer worked like it’s
    was suppose to.
