Windows Not Detecting iPod

When I plug my ipod into my pc, itunes does not come up or detect the ipod is connected. However, when I try it on other computers it works just fine.
I am guessing its a problem with my computer. However the computer is fine, and can detect anything else put in the USB.
Any reccomendations?

My gut tells me this is your issue:

  • Windows not recognising ipod

Windows 7 does not detect my new iPod. How can I fix this?

Windows will not recognise my ipod shuffle, I have
tried reinstalling it, when I try playing music it
    just clicks.
I still have I Tunes, just cannot connect the Ipod to
update. I have had it for four months, I am afraid
it may be a fault with the ipod, any ideas? The pop
up says windows does not recognise the USB device,
try reconnecting it, or replace device ! Help would
    be appreciated please.
Did you ever get an answer? My shuffle is not being recognized by windows either.

  • Windows not reading ipod nano?!?!?!?!

when i plug in my ipod nano into my computer, the computer screen freezes for a while, then the error message, "ipod has been detected, but cannot be identified properly, please unplug and try again" comes up. i have 'unplugged' numerous times, and the same error message comes up. the ipod is not detected by itunes, and just automatically ejects itself.

I am assuming that you have Administrator privileges on your system. If not, you will need them.
Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, then T to open the Task Manager.
    Click on the Processes tab.
Scroll down until you see iPodService.exe.
Click on it to highlight it.
Click on End Process at the lower right corner of the box.
Congratulations, you've just stopped the IPod service.

  • Public thanks to user "Jeff Bryan" for post on itunes not detecting  ipod

after several hours of going in circles on apple's ipod support page finding no answers i came across a post by jeff that at least made my ipod semi-functional again. my only question to apple is why do other ipod users have to provide product support? and why is the advice he gave more complete than apples own web page? i have never been a big fan of apples/macs but the ipod seemed like a neat gadget so i took a chance and got one for my girlfriend. it has been nothing but problems and is always in need of some upgrade, reset, or bizzare combination of pressing buttons just to keep it running. i later purchased 3 sansas for other members of my family and they have yet to have a problem. i guess this level of maintanance is ok if you like to spend all of your time tweaking your tech toys but is completely unacceptable for a casual user that just wants to listen to music. i dont think i will be buying any more apple products.
    summary of problem:
ipod nano worked for while (needed a reset about every two months and locked up several times requiring reload of firmware)
one day itunes could not find ipod. no config changes were made to the host computer
ipod still showed up in windows as f: drive (usb mass storage device)
tried all troubleshooting tricks on page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
    loaded itunes 7.0.2.16
ran diagnostics and got green light for ipod connection status but still not showing up in itunes
itunes will only find the ipod if i put it in disk mode according to jeffs advice in link below. once disconnected, i have to put it back in disk mode for itunes to find it again
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=720510&tstart=30
if anybody has any other advice on getting this thing to function properly, it would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, thanks for the thanks!! : )
Did you follow the advice in some of the other links, like changing the iPod's assigned drive letter, or disabling fast user switching?
When I was a Windows user, I did both these things and I also had disk use enabled permanently (you can do this via the summary screen) as I found it helped with connection issues. The only downside with this is that you must manually eject the iPod after use (even with auto sync selected).
"my only question to apple is why do other ipod users have to provide product support?"
As well as these forums there's a wealth of Apple articles, but it's knowing where to look. Every other manufacturer has support forums too.
With the number of knowledgeable people who post here, you're more likely to get a good answer here than anywhere else. As long as you avoid the one or two folks who post complete nonsense!!
Don't suppose the iPod is still under warranty?

  • Windows Not recognising iPOD Mini ?

My ipod charges when connected to the PC through USB port.
But Itunes does not show the iPOD.
My computers does not show iPOD.
Device manager shows Unknown Device under USB.
I have followed all instructions in the iPOD support and have installed and uninstalled the iTunes many times.
But the status is the same.

Can someone help me figure out how to get my Ipod Mini to be recognized by my computer and Itunes? I plug it into the USB port but nothing happens except the Ipod shows that it is charging. The computer or Itunes doesn't seem to see My Ipod Mini at all. Please Help!!!!

  • Windows Xp not detecting Ipod Need help

When i plug my ipod in to my desktop my ipod starts charging but it doesnt detect my ipod.I have even tried to do that restore thing where you hold menu/center button then when the apple logo appears hold center button/play or pause.I really really need help with getting my computer to detect my ipod.

Actually, the "vice-versa" part works, Macs can read and write Windows formatted iPods, but you can only manage music manually (syncing does not work until it it is restored for Mac). But back to the topic...
And it seems like this is a situation where the iPod has been working and now it does not. Please correct me if this assumption is wrong.
You have to eliminate the possible problems one by one, as many as possible. Starting at the computer... Note: These are separate things to try, not a single procedure.
Power down and restart the computer, if you have not already.
    Try a different USB port.
Try a different docking cable, if possible. The connectors can become worn. Only two pins handle the power, so it is very possible for it to charge yet not connect for data.
The dock connector on the iPod may be worn out or have become faulty. Not much you can do about that, except have it replaced.
The "thing where you hold menu/center button" is not a restore. It is a reset (think rebooting your PC). Make sure you do it again following these instructions precisely.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If this does not help, put the iPod into disk mode, and then connect it to the computer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If you manage to get iTunes to recognize the iPod, you may then want to do a restore (think reformatting your PC's hard drive and reinstalling Windows). This will erase the iPod and initialize its software. Then you can sync your iTunes library again.

  • Windows not Detecting my Ipod

Hey guys, Iv recently just gotten an Ipod shuffle 2nd Generation and when I plug it into windows I get nothing, Nothing at all other than a blinking orange light on my ipod.... Not even anything in My computers or Itunes, Iv tried most of the trouble shooting on the website here and nothing works... so Im getting pretty hopeless so im posting here for help... Thanks in advance

Just A small Update... Iv tried it on my sisters computer and it worked for some reason, but... on my computer it refuses to show anything up.

  • Windows XP not detecting ipod.

I think i have the 3rd Gen iPod (the one with the buttons above the wheel).
I bought a belkin PCMCIA Firewire card for my laptop which said i could connect my ipod to it. I have installed the card without any problems, however when i plug in the ipod it is not recognised by the PC at all. It does not charge it, i cannot see it in My Computer or Itunes and i cannot update using the updater as it does not see it.
I have read the guide at the top of the page but still no luck, any suggestions?

    I have the same problem.
it was like everything stopped working overnight and as i've been reading it seems to be itunes 5.0.1 that is driving everyone crazy, including me. i am ready to kill someone at apple for this (but not really, i just want my ipod to work on my computer again!)
so i tried toonz' solution (didn't work) and phrenck's solution (didn't work) and i also tried to downgrade back to itunes 4.9 but my ipod is still not recognized at all. i think maybe it's because my ipod was recently updated with the 2005-09-03 updater? i don't know. i have a 20 GB 4th gen ipod and i'd like to get this problem resolved ASAP since my warranty expires on 10/18 and i'm debating whether or not to go in to get a replacement.
    thanks for any help. =p

  • ITunes not detecting iPod Touch

So I just got the 32GB iPod Touch today. 2nd Gen of course.
Already had iTunes in my PC before this. So as how it should go, I plugged the iTouch in, it started to sync my music. Okay so that was normal. Then it asked to update it's firmware to 2.2. And I said yes.
After updating it asked to install, but my songs were still syncing with the iTouch. I said yes to install the updates anyway. It started installing and suddenly my iTunes just crashed, saying some error and it couldn't install the latest firmware. Ever since then iTunes won't/can't detect my iTouch anymore but Windows can.
The driver installed is 'Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB Driver', is that the right one? That's about as far as it goes now. And when I turn on the iTouch it just shows that picture of the USB and an arrow to connect to iTunes.
Annoying enough, I've tried every single solution I could find on this forum. Even with the usbaapl.sys copy paste into inf folder, still doesn't work. Countless times reinstalling iTunes still doesn't work, reset the iTouch, still no hope. So if someone would please? I understand I'm not the only one going through this. I'm on a 64bit Vista, and YES I have iTunes 64bit version installed. I'm thinking if I should go to the Apple Shop to ask for help but I doubt they'd be of any service/knowledge of this. Really really frustrating. Please help, someone!?

    Hello,
Why not? Apple staff their retail stores with 'Geniuses' for exactly this reason - all part of the Apple experience. You can reserve a booking online first:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/
Alternatively have you tried working through some of the kbase articles. I would suggest that you totally remove all Apple software components and then re-install:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Given that your issue followed a firmware update you may well need to Restore the iPod too:

Let us know how you get on.

  • Windows XP detects iPod when connected to USB port but searches for Driver

    Hi,
Please help on this. When I connect iPod to any USB port of my Windows XP system, it gets detected immediately. but the problem is each time rather than iTunes opening up, I get the windows Driver search window to open up and ask me to provide the driver for the iPod. I have searched the net but cant find the driver in Apple's website.
Please advise what can be done ASAP.
    Thanks,

    Hi Noir,
thanks for the info. But I think the ipod driver is not there in my system. Because i tried the ways mentioned in the link but windows cannot find the driver. Is there any way I can get the driver. then I will order windows to point to that driver file for ipod.
also note in the device Manager window I didnot find "ipod" or "USB Mass Storage". So I think it may be an issue with the USB ports too.
    Please help...

  • Apple IPod USB Device Driver Not Installed?  WIndows not reconizing IPod!

Hoping someone can help me with my new Ipod Nano. I installed the IPod Updater and Itunes programs from the provided CD and formatted the Ipod. That all works fine -- the Ipod actually works, etc.
But during the actuall instation process, the Hardware Update Window came up for the 'Apple IPod USB Device' (I use Windows XP) I've tried to have it install automaticaly and manualy, without any luck. As a result, when the IPod is connected to the computer, I get a '!' on the device in Windows Explorer and neither ITunes or the Ipod Updater -- or Windows -- will reconize it!
If I connect my Ipod to the computer, the 'hardware' icon comes up in my system tray and the Ipod screen changes to the 'Do not disconnect' message. I can click on the hardware icon to 'remove' it. But I can't DO anything with the Ipod if nothing will reconize it!
I've tried updating the ITunes and Updater to the latest versions, plugged the USB cable into different spots on my computer, uninstalled and reinstalled everything, this time selecting the 'do not connect the Ipod to the computer at this time' option.....nothing. Windows just will NOT reconize the IPod and everytime I install the software I get that Hardware Update Window screen up!
Is there a driver for this I'm missing somewhere? What's going on? I can't do anything with my IPod and can't even find a phone number to call Apple for help!

    1-800-275-2273.
This might be an issue with your operating system. You might also want to try using it on another computer before calling them as they'll probably ask you to do so. This will isolate the problem to your computer and they might tell you to try calling Windows or getting the latest drivers for your computer.
