Windows not recognizing iPod mini

When I connect my iPod mini to my computer, nothing happens. It is not recognized by iTunes or explorer. I can get the iPod to charge if I reset it while it's plugged in, but otherwise nothing happens. I tried plugging it in to an old laptop that I have and it seemed to be recognized fine, without having any iPod drivers installed or anything of that sort.

Hello tnewell,
If you can mount the iPod mini as an external drive, try reformatting using the instructions provided in this article.
http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
Otherwise, I would work through each of the steps in this Apple support document. You can opt to do either and in any order if necessary.

  • Windows Not recognising iPOD Mini ?

My ipod charges when connected to the PC through USB port.
But Itunes does not show the iPOD.
My computers does not show iPOD.
Device manager shows Unknown Device under USB.
I have followed all instructions in the iPOD support and have installed and uninstalled the iTunes many times.
But the status is the same.

Can someone help me figure out how to get my Ipod Mini to be recognized by my computer and Itunes? I plug it into the USB port but nothing happens except the Ipod shows that it is charging. The computer or Itunes doesn't seem to see My Ipod Mini at all. Please Help!!!!

  • Fix for iTunes and Windows not recognizing iPod after 7.7 upgrade...

    ..it worked for me!
XP wanted drivers for the iPod, and I used the method in this doc with one exception:
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
...when the wizard came up and asked to look for the driver, I clicked "Search for the best driver in these locations" except instead of windows/inf I went to system32/drivers and found a subfolder with USBAAPL.SYS [the driver name] in the title... it was a hidden folder so you'll have to have them visible to see it. Using that folder as the target for the search picked it up immediately and then everything was fine.

    Hello Overdrive_king,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'm assuming you also tried using different USB ports (preferably ones attached directly to the motherboard) as well as using a different USB cable as well just for good measure?
If you choose Computer from the Start menu, does your iPod show up as a mounted drive there? What happens if you put it into disk mode using the instructions provided here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
It might also help to try the other solutions mentioned in this article related to your issue as necessary (I know you have already tried a number of them).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369
And lastly, it wouldn't hurt to remove and re-install the necessary drivers for your iPod.

  • Windows not recognizing ipod at all, but recognises other MP3 players.

I just bought a ipod nano red 4 GB from a friend. I looked at the settings on the ipod and it is set to windows. When I connect the ipod to windows with an apple power cord I get "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." But when it is connected it charges. so i don't know how it can be malfunctioning. this happened on two computers.

Since the iPod seems to be recognised on other comps then it does sould as if the problem is with the comp rather than the iPod itself.
Make sure the iPod is fully charged before you start.
Try creating a new user account on the comp which won't recognise the iPod and use that account.
Go through the apple 5R's, be sure to uninstall iTunes and the iPod software with the iPod disconnected from the comp and when you reinstall do so with the iPod disconnected and only connect the iPod when the software prompts you to do so or after the install has completed. You might like to reboot the PC after you've uninstalled the iTunes and iPod software and reboot again after you've completed the reinstall. Follow apple's instructions to the letter.
If you still don't get it to work you will need to consider reinstalling XP and starting over with a clean install.
    Hope that helps.

  • Not sure Windows gas recognized iPod Mini

Running Win XP Home edition and installed the iTunes s/w. Connected the iPod to a USB 2.0 port. Took all night to charge and even in the morning the iPod scren displayed the message Do Not Disconnect, even though the battery indicator was full. One question is why is it doing that?
In My Computer I have a Removable Disk (labeled Disk G) that is not formatted. It needs to be formatted but how do I make certain it's my iPod drive and will I create problems by formatting it? Was it formatted at the factory?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Did you install the iPod software so you could use it on a Windows computer?
Download and install the iPod updater to your computer. Restart your computer. Connect the iPod when told, and follow the set up procedure.
If you have your iPod set to transfer your music manually, then that “do not disconnect” message will continue to be displayed on your iPod until you manually eject it.
You can do this by clicking on the little eject icon next to the iPod listing in the source window of iTunes, or right click on it and select “eject”. There is also an iPod 'eject' icon in the lower right hand corner of iTunes. Another way would be to use the “safely remove hardware” icon in the system tray next to the clock (looks like a grey rectangle with a green arrow above it). Click on this then select your iPod. Or through Windows, select start/my computer, right click on the iPod, select eject. With a Mac, drag the iPod into the trash.
If you have your iPod set to automatically sync with iTunes, right click on the iPod in iTunes, select options and if you have a check mark in the box marked “enable disk use”, remove it and your iPod should automatically disconnect after it’s finished transferring music.

  • Found a fix for windows not recognizing vision M, possible for oth

I went through the same frustration as so many people about windows not recognizing my vision M. Here's how I solved it. Go to device manager (right click on My Computer, choose manage then device manager) go to the unrecognized usb device, right click and choose update driver. choose no fior connecting to windiows update, then install software from a specific location, now choose don't search, I will choose the driver to install, find and install the driver for portable devices called MTP device. this should solve the issue. this is only for players not recognized by windows. I'm not sure if some versions of wondows can't figure out where to find the driver or what.

Yes that is one way to get it working
    Otherways are suggested <a href='http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=8&categories =Nomad+Jukebox+Zen#228' target=_blank>here[/url].
Glad to hear that you got your issue solved on your own.

  • Window's formatted iPod Mini and an iMac G5

I've read somewhere once before that you can transfer your legally downloaded iTunes songs from your iPod to iTunes on another computer regardless of formatting. I can't seem to find this. I've hit the Sync button but get the message saying that everything in iTunes will erase whatever I have saved in my iPod. I have 235 songs on my iPod and don't want to lose them because the original computer that was used to download them was in Iraq (and probably since destroyed).
Is there anyway to take what's on my Window's Formatted iPod Mini and transfer it to my iMac?

  • Audio CD not recognized with Mini but reads with Macbook?

Error message saying Audio CD not recognized with Mini but reads with Macbook pro. Both machines are using the same Samsung external usb dvd/cd player.
I've tried rebooting the mini, cleaning the disk, unplugging the drive and the Mini still won't recognize the CD's (it's a 3 cd set and all 3 disks aren't working on the Mini.
When I use the same disks and drive with my Macbook Pro everything works fine.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Jay,
    Certainly a strange one!?
Are these commercial or self made Discs?
Have you tried CD/DVD sharing on the MBP & see if the Mini can read them in the MBP?

  • 5th gen ipod not recognized by windows, but old ipod min works fine.

my new ipod is not recognized by windows at all. my old ipod mini works fine. i even uninstalled everything and tried reinstalling the new ipod. after that didnt work, i plugged in my mini, and it reinstalled perfectly.
I also plugged my new 5th gen into another computer with itunes and it recognized it perfectly.
is there some sort of software conflict between the mini and other ipods? this is driving me insane.

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
    Also See:
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes

  • Nano Second generation, windows vista home premium NOT RECOGNIZEING IPOD!

Ok this has been driving me CRAZY for the last week. I've tried EVERYTHING that apple has on their support site. I've tried anything that I thought would work from this support forum. NOTHING has worked. I recently built this computer. Installed all the drivers for the mother board. Everything is working fine. My mouse, printer, USB speakers. ALL work fine. Just my Ipod and my Cell phone are not being recognized by windows, and my ipod by itunes. I think my cell might be fixed by fixing the ipod problem, as it may be the similar problem.
Anyways, I saw a post about disconnecting your printer and reconnecting your ipod. I hear the printer disconnect ( in the device manager it shows the printer as a mass storage device), but the ipod still dont show.
When I connect my IPOD to my usb cable, it will show on the IPOD that its either trying to charge, or in the case at the moment, that its fully charged ( the battery with the plug in it). But STILL wont show anywhere in my computer. I may take one of my cdroms out of my new build and put it back in my old computer, TRY to see if my ipod works on that computer ( which it did before I built this new computer and had all these problems).
AGAIN, I've done EVERYTHING on the support site (main), this support site ( most of anything I could find for vista, let alone home premium), anything that I could think of which wasnt much else that was already covered. ANY help would be VERY appreciated. ALSO, is it just me or is there no where to email apple and have them give you some FREE tech support? Or do they want more $$ from consumers? Sorry, Im just venting and Im hungry thanks guys

Ok, Update. IPOD still not working. I also recently downloaded Ventrilo (off topic but may have some value here) and tried to run it. Needless to say it dont work. So I went to THEIR troubleshooting forum and found that my new MOBO with Nforce Network manager has a problem with allowing vent to run properly. Im not sure if ALL of you have a Nvidia mainboard with Nforce software on it. But, Mine does and what THEY (the vent forum) say is to delete that piece of the software and everything should work great (vent). My problem is, if I delete the network manager. My internet stops working. :/ Hopefully evga ( my main board) responds to me with a answer to WHY my internet stops working, and how to fix it without installing the network manager. But if anyone here has any tips to solve that problem, Id really appreciate it. since my ipod is basically useless now as it is.
O AND BY THE WAY! I downloaded iTunes 8, same problem. So Im thinking it may very well be that software/driver (network manager) thats causing my problem. Ill let you all know what they say. Also If anyone else who has this problem also uses nforce chipset / network driver, and is having this problem. Let us know. Maybe we can all email nvidia and tell them how they are great at some things but need to fire all their division of network manager creators. Because they obviously are not doing their job.

  • WIndows not recognizing my ipod shuffle ?!?

I've downloaded itunes, tried researching and troubleshooting til I'm blue! I plug in the ipod and the only thing my device manager shows is USB mass storage device. By the way, my ipod did NOT come with an installation disc. And yes it's fully charged. The orange lights up while charging and when I plug in the ear pods the blue light stays lit.
iTunes is not recognizing the ipod either (as my friend said it should)
I even installed itunes on a friends' computer and had the same problem. I just got this for my son for Christmas and needless to say he's a bit disappointed.
    Did I buy a lemon?
