Windows.old files missing! Help! Someone!

Recently my ASUS laptop was experiencing some serious lag issues, so I decided to refresh it. After refreshing, all my contents are stored in the windows.old file. I had been informed that it has 28 days limit before windows deletes your files.
TL;DR
It was the second day after the refresh, I let my laptop run idle as I was taking a nap. After that, I went to check on some applications. It said "Shortcut not found". I went to check the windows.old file. It was still there, with only one file
inside, a file of an open application that was let running idle. Everything else is gone.
It was only the second day, I told my friends about it but they also don't know the answer to this.
Please help! I really need those files, I've decided that I will move those files today, but now this had happened.

Hi Shadow,
Yes, after upgrading to Windows 8.1, the Windows.old file will keep for 28 days.
However, if you reset, refresh, or reinstall Windows in that 28 days., it will create a new Windows.old and remove the old one.
Thus I am afraid you cannot get your old Windows.old content.

    Crash,
There can be a number of reasons for crashing.
To overcome a possible file corruption, you may try to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,

    http://www.illustrator.fixtoolbox.com/
As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.
Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself:

To overcome a possible CC18 corruption, you may look at the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • How to delete "windows.old" file in local disk C:

At the begining of the system he ask for selecting operating system but I use only win 8 so want to delete other os.
    What should I do ?

    Hi,
To delete Windows.old file, you should use DISK cleanup in drive properties.
To delete the item during system boot option, WIN+R, open
Run, type msconfig, then Switch to boot. Delete the boot item which you want.

  • Converting a FCP sequence to Windows Media File - please help!

Hi fellow mac users, please help if you can would mean the world to me! I'm trying to export an edited sequence (32mins in length) from FCP 5 using Quicktime conversion to a Windows Media File. Although I'm able to launch the process successfully, it just seems to convert the very first minute or two and not the entire thing! I'm not well versed in these technical issues, so have no clue how to figure this out. I've even tried in vain to compress the sequence first, import into FCP and then try to export as WM but no luck. My boss is away and client is pushing and I'm stressing!
So if you can help, that would be fantastic!
    many thanks in advance.

Cleaner and Sorenson are huge and complex transcoders. You just need time and a credit card to download and then lots of time to experiment and figure out the quirks of each application. You do not have this time. Telestream offers a competitor called Episode. it's cool.
Get the full version of telestream's flip4Mac (if it was installed properly you can do this with a click on the system prerf panel for flip4mac). You will need a credit card. Be prepared for a very long transcode to WMP, even on a big Macintosh. I don't think you have the time for any of this nonsense.

  • On my new Imac, I had the trial version of Pages, and saved some files in it. Now I have purchased the full version from Apple via a download, but I cannot save or print the old files, please help!

On my new Imac I saved some files on the free trial version of Pages, since downloading the full version from Apple, have been unable to save or print from old files saved when using the trial version. Any ideas? Thank you!

My guess is the 30-day trial period has expired but you didn't remove the trial before installing the full version. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

Elements 5 will not start from windows.old after upgrading from vista to win 7

Ideally there should not be any impact of OS change, but officially PSE5 is not supported on Win7.
What exactly happens ? Can you see the processes running in Task-manager?

  • ITunes 12 crashing on iMac - now music files missing - help!

    Hi
I'm not tech-savvy so apologies in advance!  I installed iTunes 12 on my iMac (early 2008) running OSX 10.7.5, I previously had iTunes 11 and now find the new version crashed regularly.  However whne it did that again yesterday, on restarting a good 75-80% of my music files have disappeared.  Not good.  Can anyone help me work out where they have gone, and how to get them back?  Any assistance would be much appreciated.  I tried backing up to my previous iTunes library from a Time Machine backup but to no avail.  Help!!

    Hi
    Any help appreciated!  Thanks

  • Moved user - files missing - help please

My hard drive is about full so I installed a second, much bigger drive. I want to keep the small drive as the boot drive and use the new drive for data. So..... I moved the user files to the new drive. Now lots of file, most importantly some pictures, are missing. How do I tell the system where to look?
    Thank You

I have not continued to use the computer at all. I shut it down when I discovered the problem and have been using a different computer to access these boards.
How did I end up with empty folders? I don't know, doesn't make sense to me. All I can tell you is what I did.
First I moved the entire user folder from the small drive to the large drive. Then I spot checked folders and files inside the user folder hierarchy on the large drive.
When everything appeard to be there, I deleted the user folder on the small drive and shut down the computer.
Later, I discovered the empty folders on the large drive.
So, after attempting data recovery, I probably will reinstall the system. That brings me to a whole new set of questions.
How do I change where Safari, or FireFox writes the cache?
How do I change where the OS X diskUtility save data in preparation to burn a disk?
How do I install the system so that the system files and possibly the applications and utilites are on the small drive, but all data files, including the user folders and all cacheing files, are on the large drive?
What data recovery and/or disk maintenance software do you recommend? ( I can't see the link you mentioned.)
I'm familiar with Unix, but forget it underlies OS X. Else I might not have tried to just move the user folder.
    Thanks
    Thanks

  • Windows 7 - Files missing from network share after trying to burn and no data cached to be burned

I ran into an issue trying to burn some file from a network share using Windows 7 Home Professional.  I was trying to burn some .jpg files from a mapped network share drive using explorer.  Every time I would drag the files to be burned from
the share drive to the explorer screen to be burned, the files would disappear from the share.  To make things worse the files would not show up in the screen to be burned.  I was unable to locate any of the files on either of the systems when performing
a search after this took place.  I verified that the steps that I was taking to burn the files were the same as outlined on the Microsoft site.  No matter what I did to burn these files, they were deleted from the mapped network drive.
Below are the steps that I took that both resulted in the files being deleted as well as what I had to do to finally burn the disc.
Steps that resulted in files being deleted:
    1. Insert blank CD into drive.
    2. From prompt select burn using explorer (Mastered Format)
    3. Enter title and select with CD/DVD, click Next.
    4. Open a second explorer window, navigate to mapped network drive with files to be burned and snap next to explorer to be burned.
    5. Drag and drop the files from the share drive to CD.
This where the train would fall off the tracks every time.  I would receive a message that the file(s) no longer exist and if I wanted to continue.  From here the files would be deleted from the share drive.  The best part is that the files
would also NOT be locally stored to be burned.
Steps to burn share files WITHOUT delete:
Follow steps outlined above, but instead of just dragging and dropping the files as outlined in step 5 select the files from the network share location, right mouse select copy.  Then right mouse select paste in the explorer window to be burned.
I have tested this many times and every time ended up with the same problem.  At this point I am sure that there is a problem with the way that Windows 7 is performing the burn.  The system that I was using to burn is Windows 7 Home Professional
with all the patches and updates loaded.  The remote system is Windows XP Professional with all the patches and updates loaded.
    Thanks in advance

Yes, the problem is still continuing. However, after looking into as much of it as I can, I can confirm something that r.p.b_ started stumbling on. The files are deleted IF AND ONLY IF a user is using the built-in Windows 7 disc burning utility AND is dragging
and dropping the files to the drive from a network share; this doesn't happen locally. If you watch what happens in the native folder, the files are literally scrubbed from the drive as they are processed and added to the image. However, if you Right Click
on the files and copy them, then Right Click->Paste onto the drive, they remain. (The keyboard shortcuts also worked.) Also, 3rd party disc burning utilities function they way the should. (In other words, they don't delete the files.)
My speculation is that there's a bug in the coding that sees the network share as a temporary buffer file while the image is being prepared. Then, as the files are processed in what ever way is needed, the "temporary buffer" is being deleted. The result:
lost files on a network share. But, this is just speculation.

  • Lightroom Files missing after new drive added

I recently filled up my old hard drive(F:) so I went out and bought a new and larger one. Without realizing it the new one was now the F drive and my old one is now the H drive. But Lightroom can not find all of my files in my old drive and I think it is because it is now located on the H drive. I don't want to loose the new photos I put on the new drive (now the F drive). What can I do? If I re-import the old drive will it recognize all my old files?
    Help?....

Do not re-import. If you do so, you'll lose all your work on those files.
In the Folders panel in Lightroom, right-click on the highest-level folder and choose Find missing folder from the context menu. In the dialogue box that comes up, navigate to that folder on your H: drive and select it. All the images in that folder and all its children, grand-children, etc. will be reconnected with your Lightroom catalogue. If you have more than one top-level folder, repeat with the others.

  • How to update my ipod without deleting the old files?

i have 2 pc and different songs on them..but whenever i want to update my ipod from the second one ..it keeps telling that my ipod is linked to another itune and uploading will delete the old file..would someone tell me how to go around it?..thanks
      Windows XP Pro

Connect your iPod and when you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual as per the link below.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • How to recover passwords, and favorites from Windows.old

I had to install Windows 7 over Windows 7 due to an error I had. I need to recover my passwords/favorites in some way or another. The reason I had this put under Sync is because I had my computer synced to my phone.
First off is it possible to recover the data from the Windows.old file? (Any way how to)
-Ive tried the way I found on google that did not work.
Secondly, when I am in the process of syncing to my phone it gives 3 options on the advanced options, I obviously hit the "Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data".
It says I have 88 bookmarks, but it says that they are on the computer. So that obviously means that they should be able to be recovered without syncing. How would I go about recovering them without replacing everything on my computer with my phone.
Third off, if it is possible to recover my passwords from the Windows.old then please let me know. Thats the most important thing to me.

Hello! It would be nice to have a migration script in Bridge too...
In the past, there were folders you could copy, but given the database changes, I'm not sure, I need to check first with the team.
On a Mac, it is in the collections folders in ~Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/Bridge CS5/Collections/
    PC(XP): C:Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Bridge CS5\collections
    VIsta/7: user/app data/roaming/Adobe/Bridge CS5/Collections
    Hope this helps

  • Old old FrameMaker files missing fonts/characters

I have a HUGE collection of FrameMaker files, created on a SUN system in vers 3.5. When we open in 5.5, or the new 9 (PC) there are fonts missing (being replaced) ie times helvetica, & new century schoolbook we have purchased and installed these fonts, but it still claims they are missing. (we now have zaph dingbats working) I have read about the .ini files, my next step is to try that, however, the CHARACTERS that are missing are Cyrillic, will editing the .ini files help this problem?..oh and many of the files are "view only"...our final working document will be liked pdf files...have we missed anything?

The easiest explanation is that the font names and font mapping has changed from the Sun mapping  to the Windows system, which ini file editing may help, but I suspect you ahve a larger problem.
It's almost certain that the old files are using Cryllic characters from the FrameMaker character set.
Frame went to Unicode support in version 8, which basically means that if you're going to use FM 9 on the project (which you should, because of the Unicode support -- it makes them portable), that you're going to have to map the existing Cryllic characters to the corresponding Unicode Cryllic character.
Which also means that the fonts you've purchased had better include the Unicode characters -- which they may not. They probably do if they were crafted recently, but it's worth checking that detail now, before you jump in. Older fonts may not support Unicode.
The read-only setup in the old files is probably because someone locked them down so they couldn't be altered OR a bit or two got corrupted over the years. If that's what happened, try Esc F l k (the l = lower case L) to see if that fixes it.

  • Missing help files

I have just bought a new iMac and installed Leopard. However I am having a lot of problems trying to use any of the help tools in Finder. Searches do not bring back any results, and sometimes the window remains blank. Today it displayed the main Mac Help screen, with "What's New in Leopard?" etc., but none of the links work. When I click a link I get an error message saying "Alert Page cannot be found". I guess this could be due to a corrupted install or Help index file, but I have no idea how to fix this. Any suggestions? Many thanks

In case anyone else searches this forum for "Missing Help Files" here's my experience:
I'm too chicken to delete files even though I've a good back up, so I renamed each with "old" inserted in the file names which macjack cited above. There are four files he mentioned. "Deleting" the ~/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder didn't produce any visible. I still got the "Alert" message from Mac Help.
I then went to the set of four ~/Home/Library/Preferences/ files he specified. I found there was no com.apple.helpui.plist file there to delete! Then I "deleted" the remaining three he specified and restarted. Worked like a charm. Mac Help looks to be running as intended.
    Thanks, macjack.
