Windows.old libraries issue

I have a user who uses a personal laptop for business sometimes. They brought the laptop in (Samsung) and showed me that it was running slowly, and having some odd issues with input lag (while typing). It's a Windows 7 Home Premium machine, with 6GB of RAM,
an i5 processor, and an Intel 4000 graphics adapter.
The first thing I noticed when I looked at it, was that there were duplicates of all major libraries, with a .old "extension". Meaning, that when browsing the libraries for that user folder, there is a "Pictures" library, and right below
it, and Pictures.old library. This theme continues for all major libraries (pics, vids, docs, etc.)
Now, the .old libraries are the only libraries with anything in them. The new ones don't seem to have any folder structure at all, and there is nothing contained in them. So I looked for the Windows.old folder I was certain I would find...... and it isn't
there. In fact, there isn't any evidence at all that there was an upgrade to the OS (same OEM installation that came with the machine).
So, does anyone have an idea how these duplicate directories might have gotten created? I'd like to simply copy the contents of these folders to the new libraries, and delete the old ones. But I'm hesitant to do so without understanding how they got created.
Additionally, the new libraries don't seem to allow me to copy anything into the folder anyway. It complains that there is no "folder" to copy to, and prompts me to create one. When I do, I get the same error.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll provide whatever info I can to assist in resolving this.
Thanks!

  • How do I retrieve my old bookmards and search history from firefox when firefox has been put into a windows.old directory?

I have a new desktop computer of approximately 4 months which is running Windows 8. I had some issues with malware about 2 months back and installed Malwarebytes, and Avast and this seem to take care of the issues. All was working fine until Friday 08/09/13 when at the end of work day my computer decided to restart itself and boot into an 'auto repair' mode which it seemed to stuck in so I left it and came back into the office on Saturday and saw the message 'unable to auto-repair'. So then windows 8 gave me two options - either to restart or advanced options. I opted to do a 'pc refresh' in the advanced options section and what this does remove all applications installed not through the app store and places them in a windows.old folder. So I was able to locate windows.old/users/Carlos/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/ but not sure what to do from here.

You're almost there. When you look in that Profiles folder, you should see one or more folders with semi-randomized names. The most recent one probably is your last active profile.
You have a lot of options for how to recover:
    * Restore last bookmarks backup ([[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]])
    * Manually copy over saved password files to your currently active profile folder ([[Recovering important data from an old profile]])
    * Attempt a complete "transplant" of your old settings folder to your new installation of Firefox (e.g., this thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/965036 how to install and migrate info to a new laptop with Win 8])

  • IPhoto 9.6, can update only 1 out of 6 old libraries

I have upgraded from OSX 10.9 to Yosemite (10.10.1) and then from my previous version of iPhoto (don’t remember the exact version) to iPhoto 9.6.
At the first opening, iPhoto asked to update the default library to work properly with the new version. The process started and after an additional request to repair the permissions, it ends quickly and correctly (the library size is 26 GB).
Since I have more than one library I tried to do the same process for all libraries but iPhoto always starts the process and never ends. When the process starts I always get the request to update the library and after few seconds the correct structure of the database appears in the Source List area but the Viewing Area remains totally black with the spinning wheel in the center.
I went through most of the discussions I found in this forum and I think to have tried all the suggested walkaround but I never solved my problem: I can open correctly only the library that was first updated but no way to end the update process for any of the remaining libraries.
Here below the list of what I have already tried:
    - reboot
    - repair disk permissions with disk utility
    - run iPhoto Library Upgrader; all the libraries were already compatible with the current iPhoto version
    - restore libraries from a Time Machine backup
    - check libraries content; all the pictures are still present in the Data folder (the libraries size ranges from 364 MB to 21 GB)
    - run iPhoto First Aid; tried all the 4 options
    - disintall iPhoto and re-install it again
    - run the update process overnight; after more than 10 hours the spinning wheel was still there
    Any ideas are welcome !
    Thanks

I did it but the rebuild process failed. iPhoto Library Manager was only able to rebuild the database (i.e. all the albums were created), pictures are still missing.
I had a look to the error log file and I think that the main issue is related to the fact that iPhoto Library Manager (and maybe also iPhoto 9.6) is looking for the pictures in the Master folder which is not present in any of my old libraries. This is part of the error log file:

    cc 18 cloud version installed(windows) old files cc17 crashes......help

    Crash,
There can be a number of reasons for crashing.
To overcome a possible file corruption, you may try to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/
    http://www.illustrator.fixtoolbox.com/
As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.
Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself:

To overcome a possible CC18 corruption, you may look at the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Windows.old Folders ... Have You Ever Had A Use For Them?

That you know of. What if the old OS has a virus in it?
As I've said earlier - nuke it just to be safe.

Has anyone ever needed the Windows.old folders created when an OS is re-loaded or a different OS is loaded on a machine containing an existing OS?
Deleting them can free up Gigs of space and I do it when I have had to re-load an OS or have upgraded an existing OS.
Now, for a secondary question.  I have a machine that has this Windows.old folder that I cannot delete.  I have tried while logging into the machine as the Domain Admin and again as the machine local Admin. Each time I am being told I don't have the sufficient permissions to delete the folder.  I have never had this issue happen before.  The Windows.old folder is on a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine.  Any suggestions as to why this is happening?

  • Windows 7 Firewire Issues with CS5 and ADVC-700

I've got a Windows 7, 64 bit system with CS 5. In dubbing out for playback, I route a firewire cable from the PC to an Canopus/Grass Valley ADVC-700. Both units are less than a year old and are having issues with "black outs" during the dub out process. I've read different things about Windows 7 having issues with firewire drivers. After speaking to someone with Adobe, I've changed my firewire driver to Legacy. That hasn't helped.
The ADVC-700 has s-video out running to preview monitor and BNC out/XLR audio running to my playback system for ingest. When the video goes to black (usually for a 1/2 second), the audio drops out with it.
I've reset the settings on the ADVC-700 with no luck.
Any suggestions on a fix or something else to try?

I did test with a JVC GY-HD200U and there weren't any performance issues which led me back to the PC or other on the PC.
The system is running Windows 7, 64 bit with CS5 Production Premium following an upgrade from the CS4 version.
I've got 12 GB of Ram, (2) Intel Xeon Quad Core E5560 -2.8 GHZ processoCrs.
    (1) 500GB SATA2 hard drive, 7200 RPM, 32 MC (System Drive)
    (3) 1 TB SATA2 Hard drives, 7200 RPM, 32 MC (3 TB, RAID0 Storage Drive)
    Nvidia GeForce 9800GT graphics Card
    Supermicro X8DAi motherboard, Intel 5520 Chipset, 2-PCIe X16, 1 PCIe x4, 3-PCI, 10-USB2 ports, 2-pro/1000 NIC, 8-channel HD audio, 6 SATA ports, RAID 0/1/5/10
I've got the legacy drivers for the firewire card. I've checked to make sure all of the power save options are off along with all screen saver options. I've cleaned my Adobe Cache out, deleted my Adobe Preferences, went from the 4pin/6pin cable to a 6pin/6pin cable to feed the ADVC-700 from the PC, reset the ADVC 700 back to factory specs...all of this with no luck.
The problem seems to be worse since the move from CS4 to CS5 but it's hard to tell.
I've also hooked up an older ADVC-500 unit with the same output results.
I think I noted in the first post that this is happening on two indentical systems with the same cabling and programs and the same ADVC-700 boxes.
I've been told by Adobe to clean my C; drive and reload the OS and Adobe CS5 as I should have done that when I upgraded instead of just upgrading the system from CS4 to CS5 using the discs. I haven't done this yet as I have to budget time/workflow to accomodate.

  • Windows.old files missing! Help! Someone!

Recently my ASUS laptop was experiencing some serious lag issues, so I decided to refresh it. After refreshing, all my contents are stored in the windows.old file. I had been informed that it has 28 days limit before windows deletes your files.
    TL;DR
It was the second day after the refresh, I let my laptop run idle as I was taking a nap. After that, I went to check on some applications. It said "Shortcut not found". I went to check the windows.old file. It was still there, with only one file
inside, a file of an open application that was let running idle. Everything else is gone.
It was only the second day, I told my friends about it but they also don't know the answer to this.
Please help! I really need those files, I've decided that I will move those files today, but now this had happened.

    Hi Shadow,
Yes, after upgrading to Windows 8.1, the Windows.old file will keep for 28 days.
However, if you reset, refresh, or reinstall Windows in that 28 days., it will create a new Windows.old and remove the old one.
Thus I am afraid you cannot get your old Windows.old content.

  • Help deleting Windows.old folder.

    Hello.
I recently installed Windows Vista on my MacBook, however I still have a folder called Windows.old on my drive that I need to delete.
When I right click on the windows.old folder it says I need admin privelages (which I am logged in as) and willnot delete the folder.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
    Thank You

    Hi Kenneth,
I experienced a similar issue a few years ago with a PC laptop and WindowsXP. Basically what it came down to was that something got goofed up when I re-installed Windows, causing the duplicate folder which I was unable to delete. The only way around it was to re-install Windows again. This may or may not be the solution for you. It's hard to say because you have a beta copy of Vista and it could be something else entirely. Good luck.

  • P965 platnium and windows boot up issues

    Hello,
I put my computer together yesterday and everything seemed to work alright.  I was successfully able to install windows.  The issue i have is that windows will only load up once, then it will always freeze on start up.
For example last night, I reinstalled windows, got to it to load up, installed my network driver, browsed the web for a few minutes, and then restarted the computer.  Then windows froze up during start up, so i reboot, and try to boot into safe-mode, which also ends up freezing after loading a few files.
This has been very repeatable, I can always reinstall and get back into windows, but i can not restart without it freezing.  I ended up downloading liveupdate and updating the bios to 1.2, but that didn't seem to help.

To make the issue more complex, I took out the harddrive and dvd burner and put them back into my old computer, reinstalled windows, and was able to reboot successfully.
    Any thoughts?

  • How do I recover bookmarks and passwords after an O/S change, and the old programs are in a windows.old folder?

Recently, I had a non-recoverable crash of my Windows XP Pro system. I clean-installed Vista (would not allow an upgrade install), and it moved all of my settings and programs into a windows.old folder. I'd like to be able to recover my stored passwords (even if I have to manually re-enter) and my bookmarks for Firefox. I was running version 4 at the time of the O/S crash. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Just as I expected. Before following my instructions, you might need to change your folder options to show hidden files. Now go to:
    '''C:/windows.old/Documents and Settings/<username on XP>/Application Data'''
And copy everything inside the '''Mozilla''' folder to
    '''C:/Users/<username on Vista>/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla'''
If the '''Mozilla''' folder doesn't exist, create one.
Now, go to '''C:/windows.old/Documents and Settings/<username on XP>/Local Settings/Application Data'''
And copy everything inside the '''Mozilla''' folder into
    '''C:/Users/<username on Vista>/AppData/Local/Mozilla'''
Again, if the '''Mozilla''' folder doesn't exist, create one and rename it to '''Mozilla'''.
    Hope this helps!

  • How do i deactivate a photoshop key in windows.old?

I've been pulling my hair out over this one and can't find any answers after many google searches.
I'm running windows vista, and got some weird virus the other day that wouldn't let me open any programs or see anything on my desktop and my only real option was to run the system restore disc.
Well, i did, and it worked, but i couldn't deactivate my photoshop key before doing this. Now photoshop is in Windows.old and obviously won't open, so i can't deactivate the key. How do i deactivate it when its stuck in windows.old? there has to be a way...

Thanks for the quick reply! i feel like im already getting closer to solving this.
I was actually a bit confused by the support section and which number to call or which option within support i should choose. I spent about a half an hour trying to find an email address i could send my question to, but couldn't find one.
So i guess what my question now is, where would i find the right number for the type of support i need? Which area within support should i go to?

  • After Aperture 3 update, I can't access old libraries. It tells me to close and relaunch but when I do this it just opens again on the same library. Please help!

I have just downloaded the latest iOS update for my computer, and then I was unable to use Aperture until I upgraded its software also. I did this, and it seemed to work fine on relaunch with new version - the last library I had open worked fine. BUT yesterday I tried to open a different library and I got a message saying
"the selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch"
I click the relaunch button and it relaunches but it just opens on the same library again. I don't know how to make it relaunch properly with the different library. Please help!! Thanks

TThe message is a bit deceptive the old libraries need to be upgraded before they can be used. To upgrade quit Aperture select one of the old libraries with the Finder and double click it. This will open Aperture on that library and ask if you want to upgrade it.
WWhile the procedure is safe it is always a good idea to have a backup of the libraries before doing this.

  • How to delete "windows.old" file in local disk C:

At the begining of the system he ask for selecting operating system but I use only win 8 so want to delete other os.
    What should I do ?

    Hi,
To delete Windows.old file, you should use DISK cleanup in drive properties.
To delete the item during system boot option, WIN+R, open
Run, type msconfig, then Switch to boot. Delete the boot item which you want.

Has anyone solved the windows 7 driver issue? The canon website does not have one yet is reported windows 7 capatable.

    Hello ricksterofmi,
The PIXMA iP6000D Drivers are included with the Windows 7 Operating System through Windows Update.  Please connect the PIXMA iP6000D to your computer and automatically install the drivers.  Once this has been done, visit our website by selecting this LINK to download and install the Add On Module for full compatibility.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can I recover passwords in firefox 13.0.1, after an OS change [reinstalled windows 7] and the old programs are in a windows.old folder. Thanks in advance...

    1.PerfLogs, 2.Program Files, 3.ProgramData, 4.Users, 5.Windows and 6.autoexec
These were the six folders listed inside windows.old folder. I tried to paste a snapshot of that folder, but I don't know how..

    You're welcome
