Windows on MacBook and Viruses ..?

Hey guys..
I was wondering..if I have windows installed on a MacBook..Could i catch viruses that will affect my Windows partion while working with the OS X?
i ask this, because I was planning to install Windows, and not install an antivirus because I will not be accessing the internet from the Windows' partition.
Thank You All!

If you will not have internet connectivity in Windows you should be fine. Most OS X users do not use anti-virus software. There have not yet been any real viruses affecting OS X. I would just make sure that anything that you install in Windows is legitimate software and you should avoid using any software you may get from friends, etc. unless they are the original disks. In general, it's a good idea to run some form of anti-virus under Windows... but if you won't be using anything other than original manufacturers software, you should be okay (although, there have been cases where a virus has crept into original manufacturers software during the production process). I would suggest you run at least a free anti-virus program... like AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/
It's a small program is light on resource use (unlike Norton, etc).

When a virus infects a Windows PC one of the first things it does is mine the PC's e-mail address book. It will then send out e-mails containing itself to addresses in the address book using another address from the address book as the sending address.
The only way you can tell where the e-mail comes from is to look at the long headers. In Mac Mail View>Message>Long Headers.
So it probably wasn't sent from your Mac but from a PC who has both your addresses in his mail .

  • How do I get Windows's off my MacBook and Mac osx back on?

I purchased a MacBook (A1181) off eBay "for parts" but the only thing it needed was a new battery. I turned it on and everything worked fine, only problem is that it's running Windows 7 professional and is password protected. When I contacted the eBay seller they said the Mac was supposed to be wiped clean and they could not help me because it was sold "for parts." I cannot log in to wipe and I don't have any original discs or any Mac osx discs. I want windows off and a fresh copy or snow leopard on my MacBook. PLEASE HELP

You can use a Snow Leopard retail install disk to erase the drive and install 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

  • MacBook and Windows 7

Hey guys! I managed to grab a hold of a second hand MacBook and upgrade it with a 320GB Hard disk, it all went smooth, I had to borrow someones Snow Leopard disk as the MacBook didnt come with one. But i wanted to install Windows 7 to a 30GB partition, so i fired up Bootcamp and formatted the 30GB partiton as NTFS and windows 7 installed perfectly, or so i thought. Sound doesnt work, iSight doesnt work, among other things but my main concern is sound and iSight. Google tells me i need a Snow Leopard install DVD to get the drivers off of. Is this correct? I've downloaded the latest realtek drivers and they dont work either. Device manager reports "Error - The device cannot start (Code 10)" as for iSight, well i cant find a driver anywhere for that.
    Windows 7 details:
Microsoft Windows 7 32Bit operating system
    Mac Details:
    MacBook
    Snow Leopard 10.6.4
2Ghz Intel Processor (Core 2 duo i believe)
    2GB RAM
    Intel GMA 950 - 64MB
    -Any help would be appreciated.
    -Thanks

Wow i did not know it was illegal to install Snow Leopard from someone elses DVD. I will however go purchase a copy. But i did try installing XP and everytime the setup got to "Setup is starting windows..."
    it would crash with
    PROCCESS1INITIALIZATIONFAILED.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error........etc.
Apparently the stop error code (STOP: 0x0000006B...etc) has something to do with roxioGoBack or something. Google wasnt really helpfull.

  • For the 2013 versions of macbook pro should I purchase 32 bit windows or 64 bit version to be able to install it on macbook and use windows with bootcamp?

Then you might check at any of the other university book stores or software stores or any computer store in town for the 64-bit version.
If you want to use the 32-bit version from the school (you probably get it for free or very cheap) then you could purchase Parallels and run it as a virtual machine concurrently with OS X. There are some caveats:
    1. You have to purchase Parallels (there may be an academic discount.) List is $79.95.
    2. Your computer needs minimally 4 GBs of RAM, but realistically 8 GBs would be better.
    3. Parallels creates a pseudo-drive on your hard drive. It could easily require 50 GBs of disk space.
Accommodating these might be more costly than buying 64-bit Windows 7. And, if you look online you may find them with an academic discount (or may be able to order it through the school.)

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • I have just purchased my first MacBook Pro and it is pretty fantastic. I own the disks for Microsoft Windows 7 ultimate, and Office 2010 Professional Plus, and need to run them in this Mac. 32 bit discs. Can this happen in boot camp?

I am trying to run Windows and Mac OS on my brand new MacBook Pro. I need to be able to boot to either one. I don't need a lot of hard drive space for the Windows OS. However, the software discs I own for Windows are 32 bit install. Is there a way to run this with what I have? I have the new MacBook 13 in. with retina display. 2.6Ghz i5 with 8GB RAM and 512 GB PCIe Hard drive.

Hi guys! I have a new Macbook Pro purchased from Best Buy yesterday. I had the Geek Squad upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs (They only had PNY brand, I was concerned but went with it anyway). I had them install Boot Camp Windows 7 Ultimate. Today I picked it up and when I started playing with it I learned that they installed the 32 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate instead of the 64 bit version, why, I have NO IDEA.
So, I want to replace the Win 7 installation with the 64 bit version but have read that this can be tricky. What is the proper way to do this? I'm not sure I trust the Geek Squad to do this for me.
I assume I need to reformat the Windows partition, defragment and then install the 64 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate, but am not completely sure. I want to be sure that I do NOT do anything that could affect the Mac side
    What do you guys think?
I think you should take it back to the Geeks and tell them what you want, I also think you should backup before you do.
You do not need to reformat or repartition, you need to reinstall Windows from a 64bit copy, 32 & 64 have identical requirements as far as partition and format go, defragmenting has nothing at all to do with your needs.

  • Mac and Windows on MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I read a lot of hype about running Mac OSX and Windows together on the new intel machines but there seems to be no clear direction from Apple 'or anywhere else' on this except a beta bootcamp and a virtual software option.
I have just got a Macbook Pro mainly for OSX use but I have a couple of Windows only apps on an Old PC box that I would like to run on the MacBook Pro... to save me worrying about accessing the PC and better still when I am not at home trying to get someone else to access the PC for the info.
I see bootcamp is in Beta still yet Apple is selling the Windows Mac thing like it is the norm, easy and a fully fuctional option.
Maybe some experianced Mac intel Mac/Windows users can answer this for me... Is it best to use Bootcamp or Parallels Mac software?
Which option is easier to use both systems on the MBP?
    Which is more reliable?
    Many thanks guys... and girls.
    G4 DP 1.25 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Yeah, I did not bother with boot camp because I have played that game before (Windows/Linux) and having to re-boot all the time is very annoying - especially if your in a hurry!
I tested Parallels and XP Pro on a MACbook and it ran nicely. I did Python speed tests (Pystone.py) and found it FASTER in Windows than in OSX - pretty weird. I'm still tyring to figure out why.
Anyway, I decided to upgrade to a MacBook Pro - I want to make sure Windoze runs as fast as it can!
In my case, my primary need is VISIO - its the only program I have not found a MAC version of.
Just to let you know, when I run Windows XP on the Intel Duo it takes a constant 25-35% CPU resources on both CPUS. Out of windows, the CPU % drops to 1-5%.
On my (monster) MacBook Pro 17" with Intel core 2 Duos Windows puts both CPUs up to about (giggle) 5-10%!!! Out of Windows, its below 2%... Nice machine....
In both tests, this is JUST to load the Windoze desktop - I'm not actually running any specific program - doing so adds a few more percent. Although, again, on the PRO laptop it does not add very much at all.
I did not test VM ware since it was not out yet. And I need to buy and setup a fleet of support laptops NOW. When it comes out, and I hear good things, I will try it out.
But to be honest, I would rather ditch the last of my Windows software first....

  • Trying to connect a MacBook and a Windows Laptop through WRT54G - no success

I have a MacBook and a Windows XP Laptop and try to connect both through the WRT54G Wireless router which is connected to my DSL modem. The router serves as DHCP and allows 5 connections, using WPA as security.
I can be online with my Windows Laptop no problem, but when I try to connect with the MacBook it connects for a few minutes and then both get kicked off. The Laptop continues to show that it is connected to the wireless network, but I can't go to the internet anymore. The WLAN LED on the router stops being lit. Only way for reconnection is restarting the Router (unplug/replug).
When I go online with the MacBook ONLY through wireless or by cable to the router it gets connected, but stays online for 1-2 minutes only as well, then drops off.
The only way now for the MacBook to stay permanently online is to wire it to the DSL modem, but then I can not get online with the Windows Laptop.
I have browsed a number of online forums and tried the tips (different channel, I switched from WEP to WPA etc) but nothing has helped so far.
    please help!
    thanks, Michael

I resolved the problem !!! Apparently the MAC's had some software/firmware updates that needed to be installed. I installed the updates and am able to go on the internet wireless along with the PC's. I have not lost any connection since I downloaded and installed the updates. These updates included Airport Extreme 2007's which I think may have been the problem.
