* 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1GB memory
* 120GB hard drive1
* Double-layer SuperDrive
will WINDOWS VISTA HOME EDITION run effectively here?
will both OS like Windows and Mac run effectively? efficiently?
thank you.

If I'm not mistaken, Vista does not support installation on machines with EFI instead of BIOS. I personally tried to install Vista on my MacBook and received an error indicating that could not be installed on my hardware. I'm not entirely sure why XP would work, but not Vista. Vista will install under Parallels however. Here is the rather technical comment from Microsoft:
EFI, UEFI Support, and Windows Vista
Windows 2003 Server supports EFI 1.10 on Intel Itanium platforms. Microsoft Windows Server codename "Longhorn" supports EFI 1.10 on Intel Itanium platforms, and also introduces support for native UEFI boot on x64 64-bit platforms. Although the initial release of Windows Vista will not include UEFI x64 64-bit support, a subsequent Windows Vista release will support UEFI.
Given the advent of mainstream 64-bit computing and the platform costs previously discussed, Microsoft determined that vendors would not have any interest in producing native UEFI 32-bit firmware. Microsoft has therefore chosen to not ship support for 32-bit UEFI implementations.
For Microsoft, support for UEFI means rigorous testing on a heterogeneous mix of UEFI implementations on a wide range of hardware platforms. As of mid-2006, no firmware vendor has yet provided production-ready UEFI implementations.
The inability to perform wide testing on multiple implementations creates a risk-adequate testing must be done before operating system support can be released. This risk has driven the decision to enable UEFI support with Windows Server "Longhorn." By that time, it is expected that sufficient production-quality UEFI implementations will be available so Microsoft will be able to work with hardware vendors to test a wide range of platforms.
Microsoft is working closely with the Unified EFI Forum and industry partners to ensure that it can provide a high-quality, standards-based UEFI solutions. Microsoft has demonstrated Windows support for native UEFI boot at industry events such as Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC). As part of this continuing effort, Microsoft is also making "technology preview" code for UEFI boot support available in the Windows Vista Beta 2 release. This technology preview allows partners to test their UEFI implementations to make production-ready samples available for Microsoft for testing support in Windows. The technology preview code will be removed for Windows Vista release candidates (RC) and final release to manufacturing. However, support for well-tested UEFI will be made available in a future update to Windows Vista. The supporting code will be present for Windows Server "Longhorn" Beta 3 and Windows Server "Longhorn" release to manufacturing.
To help smooth the transition from BIOS boot to UEFI boot, differences between UEFI and BIOS environments are abstracted from the end user wherever possible. Once the OS is fully functional, it shields the user from underlying firmware differences. For example, a new boot configuration data (BCD) store was designed for Windows to help abstract these differences and to enable easier deployment of BIOS and UEFI systems.
Following are specifics of EFI versus BIOS boot:
To install the operating system by way of UEFI requires that the installation be booted via UEFI and vice versa-that is, an operating system installed via BIOS can only boot via BIOS. Once the operating system is installed via EFI, it can only boot via EFI because booting via BIOS cannot access the operating system metadata (BCD boot options) on the EFI System Partition (ESP).
Windows shipping on optical media will be able to boot either via UEFI or BIOS. El Torito multiple boot catalog support is used for this capability.
The default El Torito boot entry will be BIOS ETFS bootstrap code with an "X86" platform tag. For this to work:
The BIOS must support multiple boot entries.
It must ignore entries that do not have the "x86" tag.
It should default to booting the default entry.
The second El Torito boot entry will be for EFI boot application and will have the "EF" platform tag. This tag points to a mountable file system containing \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI.
EFI should ignore the PC/AT BIOS entry and recognize the EFI entry to mount the ESP partition before launching the boot application.
For platforms supporting UEFI and BIOS, the platform should default to boot via EFI.
Windows is planned to support both CD and DVD/UDFS boot. UDFS also uses El Torito and is built using the UDFS bridge format.
A UEFI system requires a separate EFI system partition (ESP). BIOS systems should also implement a separate system partition for the proper functioning of Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn" features such as BitLocker Drive Encryption. This will also enable a smoother transition to EFI systems.
For SysPrep migration between EFI and BIOS systems, Windows state should not be maintained on the system partition.

  • Can't connect to work server (windows) on MacBook Pro through VPN - via router

Due to the nature of my job now, I am working remotely.
The IT department hooked me up with a MacBook Pro that connects to our work server, which I know is Windows-based, via a VPN. The VPN connects just fine; however, when I go to connect to the server—it doesn't find it. It gives me:
The server “dc03” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
Interestingly enough, the first time I used it (at Starbucks, then McDonald's) it worked, but at home it wouldn't. We isolated the issue to the router, since I could do it when plugged in, but no one could figure out what kind of settings were different or weird. I went to the store and bought 2 other routers. One worked, the Linksys, but the Belkin did. WHAT? So the cheaper one worked? This was the easiest solution, because still don't know the bottom line: why?
Now, a local spot in town that I frequent—one that used to allow me to connect to my work server—changed routers (the "newest, fastest" AVIS). So now, I cannot connect and get that same message.
My IT guys are stumped. I don't personally know enough about this side of technology to be of any use.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

What is the make & model of the new wireless router that you ISP has provided you? Are you able to administer it if needed?
For the MacBook Pro, try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • USB 3.0 HDD disconnects on Windows 7 Macbook Pro Mid 2014

Macbook Pro with Retina display 13" Mid 2014
I have installed windows 7 using the Bootcamp assistant which downloaded the support files and installed from an 8GB USB 2.0 flash disk.
All went well and I have a working installation of Windows 7 ultimate, BUT I am having issues with using a USB 3.0 external HDD which contains my backups.
It plugs in and is detected OK, but when I try and transfer field, or just leave the disk a while it will drop the disc, then resect it again.
I turned off the power management on the USB ports and this made no difference.
I installed the latest extensible USB 3.0 drivers from Intel but these made no difference.
I tried reinstalling window from scratch by deleting from Bootcamp but no difference.
The drive works fine in OSX and on other computers but just not on the Macbook Pro in Windows 7.
Any suggestions as I need to recover my photos from a Windows backup and cannot do this in OSX which is why I need Windows 7 working with USB 3.0
    Thanks in advance.

  • Usb 3.0 not working on Windows 7 (MacBook Air late 2011)

    Hello everybody.
I've been running Windows 7 perfectly on my late 2011 11-inch mackbook air (runs even smoother than Mavericks, seems that Apple forgot about macbook air users when releasing that update, and doesn't even let me downgrade without buying the previous OS X ¬¬)
Ranting apart I've been having the following problem: my Toshiba external 3.0 usb HD drive works perfectly on OS X (always did and still does) but i can't make it work on Win 7. When I plug the usb connector, it appears as it recognized an external hdd, but it isn't able to get the drivers or recognize the drive properly. So it just doesn't work, I can't access it. I've been searching for usb 3.0 drivers for boot camp or win 7 and haven't been successful with what i've found.
    Anybody had this problem?
    Anybody got to fix it?
I'm really annoyed that i can't use my external hdd.
    Thanks for reading!

  • How do I get a screen capture in Windows on MacBook?

I'm a new guy to Mac/Mountain Lion, but not to computers, so this question may be a bit dicey.
I have used Gadwin PrintScreen for years on Microsoft Machines. During Setup, I am allowed to use Ctrl+Printscreen but now I am using, only occasionally, Windows 7 x64 on a partition on my MacBook Pro/Retina. Considering that there is no Printscreen key on the keyboard, I can no longer use the configuration I am accustomed to in the Windows environment on my lovely, shiny Mac. Only combinations ofCtrl/Alt and F keys are allowed. I get "Can't use that key. Already assigned to, etc."
So then, my query is this, on the Windows side, what keyboard combo will allow me to get a full screen capture? I've tried everything and combed the Apple community to no avail. If there is no keyboard combination, what app can I use that will allow me to do so in a Windows environment on a MacBook Pro/Retina. Just a month old.
I know how to execute this on the Mountain Lion side, but that key combination doesn't cut it on the Windows side.
In closing, I hope the solution is an app download to allow me to choose a configuration.
    Thanks for reading,
    Kelly J.

Start > All Programs > Accesories > Snipping Tool > New > Full Screen Snip
Sorry I don't know of any key combinations that will do the same thing.

  • Installing Windows on Macbook Pro, NO BOOTCAMP

I have a 15 inch core 2 duo Macbook Pro and I went to restore my computer to tiger once again and when I did I relised that the disk is too scratched up, I can only get about 90 percent of the minimal installation done.
After a while of trying diffrent things i got fet up and partitioned my hard drive to Master boot record and poped in my Win7 install disk, I installed Windows 7 perfectly with no problems but now when I go to boot it up all I get is a grey screen and after a while a folder icon pops up with a question mark on it.
How can I fix this without using another mac or bootcamp, because I DON'T have access to one and i DON'T have access to another mac cd, so don't give me that option, lol.. The only thing I have access to is another windows 7 computer.
Please help, I thought mac was suppose to be one of the top brand computers. especially with the price of them, but so far I've had more trouble with this mac than what I did with my HP, I had my HP 3 years now and my macbook not even a year.
    Thanks,

    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Select the Windows disk icon and click on the arrow button.
Where did you get the Windows installer from? Your HP? That's an OEM disc that cannot be used except on your HP. You need a retail Windows disc if you want to boot the Mac exclusively with Windows. Of course you will not have any of the hardware drivers for Windows for use on the Mac hardware.
I don't understand your complaints about a computer you don't seem to know how to use, your installer discs are all scratched up and no longer usable, but you have had lots of trouble with it. And, all your doing is trying to use it as a Windows computer. Defies logic.

  • Installing windows on macbook pro without bootcamp. Will this allow for switchable graphics?

Hi everyone, I was thinking of buying a new Macbook Pro Retina 15 Inch with the discrete nvidia graphics card inbuilt with it.
I love windows and I am planning on running windows 7/8 on the macbook pro as my primary OS (because of advantages of gaming and being familarized with windows os), however I have heard the issue of running windows on bootcamp severally drains battery life as apple does not allow you to switch the nvidia graphics to the integrated graphics. Is this true? I have heard that running windows 7/8 on bootcamp allows for only around 3:30 hours of battery life, whilst OSX allows for 8+ since it uses the integrated graphics primarily when not running GPU demanding applications.
I am wondering if you can install windows 7 without bootcamp which will wipe apple OS from the laptop completely. Will this allow for the laptop to do switable graphics without problems allowing the laptop to save much needed battery life?
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael

Sorry it seems to have taken so long for you to get an answer on this question!
Your last post was mostly right... It IS a bad idea to go that route!
While it's technically POSSIBLE to get Windows in place without OSX, it's a MAJOR technical hassle and you need to jump through several hoops to get to that point.
In addition to the hassle required, having an OSX partition can be incredibly useful at times - I've had my Windows system break several times in the past where the automated (and even manual) startup-repair process failed to get Windows booting again, but a short boot into OSX later, I have the problem resolved (via OSX) and am able to get back into Windows.
Finally, you need to be aware that the graphics card situation isn't because of the presence of OSX. Just because you get rid of MacOS doesn't mean you suddenly will be able to use either graphics card! The limitation comes into play with the hardware drivers necessary to get all your hardware working in Windows - they just don't have the facility to switch graphics cards built into them.
I'm afraid you're stuck with the NVidia card when using Windows, one way or another!
Bootcamp is a prerequisite BTW. Without it you won't be able to get Windows installed at all (at least not without MAJOR stumbling block, again!), and again, the graphics card limitation isn't due to OSX or Bootcamp.
Also, battery life... Yes. You'll have significantly less in Windows, and this isn't entirely because of the graphics card situation either. MacOS is just built so well, with the limited hardware used by Apple in mind, that power-management when using OSX os significantly better! The legendary battery life of Apple systems is actually primarily due to the operating system, not the batteries themselves!
As a helpful indication: On my 2009 17" MBP I get about 7 hours on the integrated chip in OSX (8 is pusing it, but is possible sometimes); about 5 hours in OSX when using the NVidia; and about 3 and a half when I'm in Windows.
Hope this all helps you. If you have any further questions feel free!
Apologies for the scattered approach to answering your posts - it's LATE where I am and I"m kinda rushing through things... :-)
