Windows on mbp question

wich program is better to run windows on mac
VM Fusion 2
or
Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac
or
boot camp
and how do i open windows in each one of them

as a payed client of *VMware Fusion* I love it, but lately I'm being seeing a little "lag" on the windows part so i will try to use Bootcamp in a near future (I need to format my disk cause Leopard says it can't do partition even after I verify and fixed the disk using Disk utility)
just to let you know that Parallels have the new version 4.0 since this week with a lot of new things, give it a try as well on the trial version.
always test it first before you buy it.

We just updated to Windows 7. Question: tool bar is very small, how do I make tools larger? Top bar is also very small, about a 4pt size.

Did you also get a monitor with higher resolution?
The UI size is not adjustable in ID (more's the pity), and I can't think of anything about the OS that would affect the size. Monitor size and resolution, on the other hand, will definitely affect how big ID's UI elements are displayed.

  • Formatting of External Hard Drive to be usable by both Windows and MBP?

Hello, I would appreciate some advice regarding the formatting of hard drive here as I'm pretty new to the whole Apple/Macbook Pro scene!
I am currently using a MBP (Retina) for about 2 months now.
I was previously using a Windows PC and had a external hard drive to back up information from it. However, the EHD can only be read by my MacBook Pro and I can't seem to transfer any information into the hard drive. I've been reading up online and it seems that I would have to reformat the external hard drive so that it can be both used by Windows and Macbook.
    I have 2 questions here:
If I were to reformat it to FAT32 or exFAT, will I have to first backup all the data on the hard drive first on another drive? Or will my data be safe amidst the formatting?
Will this formatting of the hard drive allow it to be read by both Windows and PC?
I would really appreciate some advice on this from anyone who has some clue about this! Thank you!!

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427?viewlocale=en
Ok if you think about backing up over timemachine, your harddrive should have at least 3 times that size you want to back up. Because of incremental Backups over timeperiods.
So my suggestion, for exchange between Windows Mac --> exFat and for timemachine buy a new Harddrive that fits the specifications

  • External Microphone in Windows on MBP

    Hi guys,
I see this problem has been posted on the form a couple of years back but don't seem can find a solution. I'm just wondering if this has been sorted now.
I have a MBP 2011 mid model. It recognise the iphone microphone when it is under OS. However, when it is in Win 7, it seems only picking up sound by the internal microphone. It was fine using the internal microphone until the machine get heated and the cooling fan gets too noisy and the microphone picks up all the noise since it is located just above the fan.
I had to use windows as the particular software I'm using doesn't have a mac version. I tried to use virtual windows under OS but it gets so slow I could hardly do anything under it.
The most up-to-date boot camp drivers are correctly installed for Win 7.
Any one have this sorted? If I can get my MBP pick up an external microphone in Windows (doesn't matter which version)?
    With many thanks

I visited the Louisville, KY Apple store today and discussed this question with Lonnie, a lead creative there.  He says he is familiar with Fusion and that what Doc wants to do is no problem.  Naturally, it shouldn't be, but ... like Doc A, after 30 years+ working with PCs, things are often not what they should be.
Doc - did you try this, and did it work?
Has anyone else out there tried this with a Retina MBP with at least 8gb of RAM and Fusion running at least 2 different VMs, each pinned to a different external monitor (with OSX on the Retina in the middle)?
If you did, was it with straight Thunderbolt monitors, or did you use older monitors and adapters?
BONUS POINTS: Was one of your VMs some version of Linux, by any chance?
Do you have ML OSX or some older version?
Did it work out of the box, or with issues that you had to get help on?
    Your answers are much appreciated!

This FAQ on Apple's website <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303572> says the following:
Even after installling the Macintosh Drivers CD, the Apple Remote Control (IR), Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard or mouse, Apple USB Modem, MacBook Pro's sudden motion sensor, and MacBook Pro's ambient light sensor will not function correctly when running Windows.
Boot Camp is still a beta, which means future versions of it may support the backlit keyboard. However, I suggest you direct future Boot Camp questions to the Boot Camp newsgroup found here <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1165> so that you'll get more timely and accurate answers.

  • Jabber 9.1 Windows - 3 simple questions

    Hi,
    Jabber 9.1 for Windows
    CUPs 8.6.4
    Q1.  Computer & Phone Control
User logs on to Jabber client from own PC - only has 'computer' control for phone.  Does not have option to switch to desk phone.  When user logs on to another PC with Jabber client installed, deskphone is enabled and option to switch to computer is not available.  Would this have anything to do with the a webcam installed on users own PC ?
    Q2. Phone Screen Pop - Suppress ?
Is is possible to suppress the Jabber client popping the phone screen to the front on a per user basis, some like it some don't.  Is there a keyboard shortcut to minimise this screen or where will I find keyboard shortcuts for Jabber for Wins ?
Q3.  Webex & Incoming call on Jabber
When using Webex, some callers still ring through, all Webex particpants can see who is ringing.  Is there a way to suppress this, other than busy out the phone ie to VM when on a presentation ?

    All good questions.
    1. The webcam should not impact this. Start by looking at Help > Server Health and seeing what's different. The softphone comprises of a TFTP download followed by SIP registration to CUCM while deskphone control requires a CTI connection to CUCM. If it was the same user on different computers I would start by disabling firewall/HIDS software to see whether they could be playing a roll. If that doesn't get you there then it's likely time for a TAC case unless you want to take a stab at reading the logs yourself.
2-3. Not to my knowledge though I have heard this from others. I have heard others ask for the do-not-take-focus request before but suppressing toast (while logical) is a new one. Both of these are reasonable enhancement requests. You could raise them on the Collaboration User Group, where product management generally pays attention, to see if they are already being tracked. If not the only process for an official Product Enhancement Request would be through your Cisco AM.

  • Group Policy and Windows 8.1 questions

I have a few group policy questions. Thanks in advance for taking a look.
I’ve downloaded the Win 8.1/Server 2012 ADMX files. They look to  be the same file names as the Win 7 ADMX files. Can I copy them into the  PolicyDefinitions folder and still be able create GPOs for either win 7 or Win  8?
If we use a windows 8.1 client with the GPO mmc to create the GPOs (instead of putting the ADMX files on the servers), will the GPO built from the win 8.1 client apply correctly even though its coming down from a DC that doesn’t have those ADMX files?
Does it make a difference if the win 8.1 client we use to create/edit the GPOs is x64 or x86?
We recently needed to add in an admx file for Lync 2013. I put the lync.admx file in the PolicyDefinitions folder on one DC. If we build the GPO from that server, when it replicates out to all the other DCs, does it matter that they don’t have that particular
    ADMX file for lync?
How do we organize and structure our ADMX files wherever they end up so that we know which sets are for which operating system? Should we be thinking about deleting the Win 7 ADMX files when the point comes in the future that we are using only Windows 8
    and Windows 9?
We are at AD functional level 2003. Do we need to go up in level for any of this to work?

Yes. Simply overwrite and you'll be fine.

Yes. GPO processing doesn't need ADMX, only GPO editing needs them.
    >  3. Does it make a difference if the win 8.1 client we use to

    No.

If you have a central store for your ADMX, it will automatically
replicate through all DCs. If not, "2." applies anyway.

If you use a central store, update it as required. If not, do nothing
and use a client with the OS version you want to target.
    >  6. We are at AD functional level 2003. Do we need to go up in level for
    >     any of this to work?
AD level doesn't matter in any aspect. Schema version matters (Bitlocker
and Wireless, eg...), but you can update the Schema easily to 2012 and
have your DCs still run Server 2003.

  • Windows movie maker/ windows media center question

I have a camera that records video in .mov .h264 format that I save on my pc using windows live movie maker. It converts it to a wmv video format still in the 1080P resolution it was shot in. The question I have is that when I go to burn these files to a dvd using windows media center does the resulting video end up down converted to standard definition instead of the HD it was saved as. Is there something I have to change in the settings on windows media center to be able to burn these files in same 1080P resolution it was filmed in, or do I have to convert the .mov files to something other than Windows media video to be able to keep the HD quality, or do I need a different burner other than DVD(blu-ray) for example to be able to burn these files. I have a blu-ray player.

I'll let others answer the question on Windows Movie Maker...
Keep in mind if you put an HD video on a DVD... not all DVD players will support it.  You may wish to burn to a Blu-Ray disk.
Personally I use Premiere Elements or Pinnacle Studio.  I create an MP4 file and then save it to a DVD for those without Blue-Ray

    Hi,
I noticed that the driver for network adapter was released  3/28/2013 before the released time of Windows 8.1, so It mostly likes driver compatibility issue. Have you manually checked the network adapter driver from its manufacture website and
find the latest driver for Windows 8.1 system, or manually download driver for Windows 7\8, install it in your Windows 8.1 system as a test. It's recommended to contact the vernder to confirm the driver issue.

  • Quicktime and windows media player question??

i have sent a quicktime file of a spot i did for a client, they like it and have uploaded it to their website, but they are getting some that say they can not view it because they only use windows media player, i know this maybe a stupid question but how can i send them a copy they can use in media player so they have both?? thanks for you help!!!

you can buy and use the WMV Studio windows media export components from Flip4Mac which wil allow you to export to a windows media format directly from FCP and other suitable QT compliant apps ...
or you can copy the file over onto your own quicktime enabled PC and use the free, and much faster, windows media encoder there.

  • Windows Clustering Networks question...

    Hi all;
    This is my scenario:
I have installed Windows Server 2012 on two servers. Then enabled Windows Clustering feature on it. The shared storage is based on Fibre Channel technology. Each server has 4 NICs and I have splitted them as followis:
One NIC for remote mangement of the servers with the range of 172.16.105.0/24.
One NIC dedicated for heartbeat communication.
Two NICs has been bundled together with NIC Teaming feature of the operating system.
But as you see in the following figure there are 4 Cluster Network links:
    Is it normal?

  • LCD TV for MBP Question - PAL/NTSC ?

I want to buy an LCD TV (not plasma) to use with my MBP. If possible from the USA as the exchange rates are so good it would be a real bargain.
My question is: are US LCD TV's compatible with European TV signals ?
The US uses NTSC and we in UK use PAL. I know the old CRT TV's are not compatible unless they are multi system.
Could someone with an LCD TV in the USA check if they can input a PAL signal as well as NTSC ?
    Many thanks.....

    Syntrak,
My 2 cents, it might be difficult for you to find a seller that ship out of the US (specially for TV). I took the liberty to reply to your post because I spent 8 ear in the US until last september.
You are right about NTSC vs. PAL, it's going to be more difficult to find in the US a TV that is PAL than here in Europe to find a TV the accept NTSC.
I just check Amazon.com and they do not show NTSC/PAL compatibility (one TV shows ATSC, to receive HD signal from the air), look here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FA0DFM/ref=dpcp_ob_title0/102-3583852-2110522
Here is more info about ATSC signal: http://www.answers.com/topic/atsc (read the wikipedia article).
Also I'm afraid that no TV sold in the US will have a SCART input, I do not really know if UK use that input plug.
You are going to have hard time to find a TV that also work in 220V (US is 110Volt), not a lot of TV (contrary to DVD player) accept 110/220Volts.
Check Circuit city (www.circuitcity.com) Best Buy (www.bestbuy.com) for information as well as Amazon.com but none will ship out of the US (as far as I know).
Good luck and you have a lot of homework to do.

  • Switching from Windows to Mac Questions

    Hi again,
I am considering replacing my current windows machine with a MacBook Pro and need answers to several specific questions. I hope this is the right forum:
    1) Will I be able to access my stored files (mostly photos) from an NTFS formatted external hard drive?
    2) Will I be able to move my iTunes files from my Windows machine to the Mac?
    3) Will I be able to sync my iPod to the Mac since I've only used it on the Windows machine?
I don't want to run Windows on the Mac so assume that won't be an option.
Thanks in advance for the answers...

    1) Yes. Just be aware that NTFS volumes will be read-only on a Mac.
    2) Yes. There are better and worse ways to do this however at a minimum all you need to do is copy of your music directory from the PC to your mac and add it to iTunes on the Mac. Itunes will handle the rest.
There are tools and methods that will assist is getting your playlist etc over though I can't think of them off the top of my head at the moment.
    3) You will need to reset your iPod for use with a Mac. However, once you've set up iTunes then resyncing your tunes is simple.
