Windows Open Upon Starting

When mountain lion came out I installed it on my iMac i7 quad 27". I am running 10.8.2. Now when I start up my Mac after booting whatever window I had open when I shut down prior reopens, whether mail, safari, etc. I looked in preferences>users and groups>administrator (me)>login items and there is nothing listed there. I also notice that I clear out recent items under the apple in the menu, then when I restart or start from fresh there are items back up there from previous start up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

FYI I don't care for the entire autosave, versions, resume doondoogles.
If you want you cano turn off Resume globally... launch Terminal and copy & paste this command at the prompt
chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
Press return
The reverse is
chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
Now reboot.
The reverse is yes.

    How can I tell my computer what applications to open upon start up?

    If your Mac is running OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
    Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
    Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
    Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
    If you want to remove an automatic startup item,
    Select the name of the item you want to  from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.

  • I just started getting a new window opening upon each fresh opening of Firefox even though I closed it on the last shutdown and each time the website that opens is different.

    I usually leave several tabs and 1-3 windows open on shut down of Firefox so that I can have access to those sites when I restart Firefox. Recently I started getting an extra window opening when I start up with a website opening that I've never been to or am aware of. Each time I close that window out but it returns the next time with a different website usually trying to sell me something. Please help me get rid of this annoying encroachment.
    Thanks,
    Lucky

    Hi luckygriffen-
    If you are getting repeated unwanted windows opening with advertisements on them, it is likely you have some malware installed. This Support article will help you identify and resolve malware issues:

  • Firefox is automatically opening upon start up

    Firefox automatically opening on my MacBook upon start up, just started 7 days ago. Not sure why? I've tried resetting under preferences. That didn't work. I'm not a tech person. But I find it frustrating when this happens.

    Sounds like a bit of spyware to me.
    I suggest downloading Ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download) and running that program. Note this will remove most of your saved usernames/passwords and all of your history/saved offline pages.

  • Multipe windows opening on start, restart!

    This just started happening: multiple windows open on mail start, and is intermittent in occurrence. For example, clicking mail will open so many windows there is a dark thick shadow of them...sometimes 5 or 6, but sometimes many more, making me just shut down mail altogether. Any one seen this one? thx!!!
    coocoo

    Thx satcomer, that got me thinking (and I was not about to recreate all my mail settings anytime soon:) to do a compare between a new plist and the one that I had, to see if I could spot some corruption...and well I found dozens of these entries:
    <key>ActiveViewers</key>
    <array>
    <dict>
    <key>DisplayInThreadedMode</key>
    <string>no</string>
    <key>SearchPopupTag</key>
    <integer>14</integer>
    <key>SearchSortDescending</key>
    <true/>
    <key>SearchSortOrder</key>
    <string>received-date</string>
    <key>SelectedMailboxes</key>
    <array>
    <string>Inbox</string>
    </array>
    <key>ShowCompletedToDos</key>
    <true/>
    <key>ShowDeletedMessages</key>
    <false/>
    <key>SortOrder</key>
    <string>received-date</string>
    <key>SortedDescending</key>
    <true/>
    <key>ToolbarIsHidden</key>
    <false/>
    <key>ViewerNumber</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    </dict>
    </array>
    Which I assumes tells mail to open a window. So I took them all out but one, and things seem to be fine now. I'll keep this thread open in case anyone wants to contribute to the cause of this type of strangeness. Cheers,

  • ITunes Tutorials Window Keeps Opening Upon Start Up

    There is no option on that window to never show up again. I went through all of the iTunes settings, preferences and other options but I could not find any sort of check box or anything to have the tutorials not show up upon iTunes start up.
    How do I keep this window from popping up?

    That seems to have fixed it!
    The first time I quit and restarted iTunes, the tutorial window did come up again without a Show at startup box near the bottom. I thought your suggestion hadn't worked so I quit iTunes again. Then, upon a second restart, the tutorial window didn't show up at all. So I guess it is fixed then. No window at all was ultimately what I wanted.

  • Why does safari re-open my last visited page instead of my homepage? I have the preferences set to always open to homepage in new tabs or windows or upon starting safaring.

    Why does Safari open my last visited page?? I have gone into preferences and said to open to homepage when starting safaring or opening a new tab yet each time it opens to the last page I visited.

      Hold down "shift" key and launch Safari
      or hold down "option" key before quitting Safari to discard saved windows from previous session.
    Disable Resume feature.
    10.7 Lion
    System Preferences > General
    Uncheck the box next to "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    10.8 Mountain Lion
    System Prefernces > General
    Chckmark the box next to "Close windows when quitting an application".

  • Installed evernote web clipper and now evernote windows always open upon start up

    Have installed the Evernote webclipper and now when I open Firefox it opens my home page but then immediately opens at least one if not more Evernote windows. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. I have disabled and reinstalled the web clipper to no avail.
    The problem started after I had to reinstall Firefox and the search engine Delta Search came attached to that. Delta appears to be gone but I can't seem to resolve this. If I disable the web cliper add on Fire Fox works fine. Previously I had no problem. I also have downloaded the Evernote web clipper to my Chrome browser and it works fine. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    ''' ... I had to reinstall Firefox and the search engine Delta Search came attached to that ... '''
    Where did you download Firefox from? <br />
    When you download Firefox directly from Mozilla you don't that Delta Search stuff or other unwanted programs or add-ons.
    Please download Firefox from here: <br />
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    Then uninstall what you now have and install the official version.
    Then see if that issue with Web Clipper is fixed.

  • Finder Window is always open upon start up of MBP.

    Hello:
    Just bought a new MBP 2.2Ghz C2D 15.4. running Leopard.
    Each time I turn on the laptop. The finder window is open to my home folder.
    What could be the cause of this and is there a way to correct it?
    Thanks!

    Do you mean that finder is open on your dock, and if you click on it, you get the window with your home folder? That's the way mine works too--I just assumed it was supposed to be that way.
    Or am I misunderstanding your question?

  • Applications window open upon restart

    I don't know if this indicates a problem or anything, but when I turn on my computer, the applications window is already open when the computer finishes starting up. Any ideas?
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    In System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login items, do you have an Applications folder and is it checkmarked? If so, deselect it.
    In/library/startup items, do you have an Applications folder?
    If neither of these is the case then navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
    (You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
    Let us know.
    EDIT: That Ferd must type with all his fingers

  • Is there a way to have mail and calendar open upon start up?

    I want my mail and calendar applications to open when I start my iMac... is that even possible?

    Not only possible, but easy.  Go to System Preferences>Accounts, your name>log in items items and click on the + at the bottom left, then select Mail, and Calendar, and they'll open when you boot up.

  • Why are apps opening upon start up in Macbook Pro?

    Whatever apps were open prior to shutting down continue to re open when I turn on my macbook pro.  None are listed in my startup programs, yet excel, iMessage, Safari and email open everytime I turn on my computer

    Yes you need to uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in" when you shut down and also if you don't want perticular application being opened in startup and you don't want to see it in dock,double click on the app on dock and goto options-> and uncheck it "open at login". Hope this helps..thanks.

  • Windows Blur Upon Starting Warcraft Wine

    Hi!
    After starting up warcraft 3 under wine with opengl and alt tabbing out of the application, the windows and desktop seem to be blur... almost as if all fonts are embolden for some reason.
    I'm not sure what's causing this but changing resolution or refresh rate seems to bring it back to normal. Is there a simpler fix to this?
    Ps. I'll try to send a screenshot if nobody gets what I mean.

    Currently I'm using a bash script to start it i.e apply some monitor setting while war3 is running.
    #/bin/bash
    wine '/root/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III/war3.exe' -opengl & (sleep 10 && xrandr -r 75)
    Save it as war3ft.sh and make it executable. In kde, juz go to properties under permissions.
    ....just in case anyone's interested.

  • Hard shutdown after BBOD. Utility window opens upon startup.

    Earlier I had a spinning Beach Ball Of Death and I couldn't do anything with my laptop (Macbook Pro 13", purchased late 2011), so after a few minutes, I held down the power button. When I turned it back on, I was met with a Utilities screen giving me four options; reinstall OS X, restore from Time Machine back up, get help online and disk utility. Initially I tried to repair the disk in disk utility, but it came up with an error "live file system repair is not supported". I tried reinstalling the operating system, but when it asked me to choose a disk to install it to, there was only one option; Recovery HD (or something along those lines), which is locked and cannot be installed to. What on earth has happened?

    Thanks sig. Unfortunately, I checked again and found out that I cannot have Apple service by phone anymore. It's already more than 3 months from the day I got the laptop.
    Do you know the other way to get help from Apple? I don't know if I can use MobileMe from a Window computer -- the only way for me to access internet at the moment.
