Windows Partition Corrupt?!?

Hello everyone,
I was in Windows a few hours ago doing some stuff. I restarted into Mac OSX. Then, I wanted to go back into Windows. It loads, and then it shows me the blue screen of death. When I turn on the computer and press the Alt/Option key, it shows me that there is a windows partition, but it doesn't work. In Disk Utility on the Mac, it shows me that the name of the Windows partition is "-n", and it doesn't show me the Windows Drive's icon on the desktop or in the Finder.
What is going on?
How can I recover my data?
Thanks,
Noam.

1. Yes, I think you can use that drive in an external enclosure. If you plug it into Windows, it will probably see both partitions on the drive but you'll only be able to read the Windows partition. This is probably your best bet for backing up your Windows files.
2. Yes, you should be able to access the files from OSX. Depending on the version of Boot Camp, you might have this functionality already -- check to see if your bootcamp/windows drive shows up on your desktop or in Finder.
If it's not there, you can use a 3rd party app to read and write to that partition. Paragon might be a good choice, and they have a free trial you can try to see if it gives you what you need. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
There are other solutions, even free ones, to allow OSX access to NTFS drives, but I can't vouch for any of them.

  • Windows partition corrupt, how to backup files to another PC?

    Hello Everybody,
I have a Macbook with a Windows partition, Windows XP to be exact which now loads a Black screen with a blinking cursor and cannot get past that point. I would attempt to fix it, but I have done some research and found that chances are I will need to restore it and not get my files back. So I figured the most important thing to do now is to find a way to retrieve and backup the files that are in there. I can load the Mac Partition, but it just so happens that most of the files I want to save are in the Windows.
    My question is:
    1. Can I just pull out the hard drive from the Macbook, put it in an external hard drive enclosure, and plug it into another PC to pull out the files?
    or
    2. Is there a way to access these Windows files from the Mac OS Partition?
Your help is very much appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Lewis

  • Why can't I recover disc space after removing Windows partition?

    Greetings,
I have an early 2008 iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo with a 500 GB HD that I have steadily updated from Leopard to Mountain Lion.  I also had partitioned my HD using Bootcamp 2.0 to run Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.  Everything hummed along nicely until the upgrade to OS 10.8.2. After that I could no longer start up in the Windows partition, ostensibly due to system registry files having become corrupt (or missing).  After several vain attempts at recovering Vista, I determined to start over using Bootcamp (now upgraded to 5.0), but 5.0 would install Windows 7, apparently not Vista. I was able to remove the Windows partition using Bootcamp 5.0 (the Windows drive no longer shows up at start up when I hold down the option key Macintosh HD and Recovery 10.8.2 remain).  I was hoping to recover the remaining HD space for the Mac.  In Disc Utliity, it shows the Mac HD occupies 337 GB of space (about 86 GB is free). The remaining 162 GB is greyed out.  If I resize the Mac HD to take up the remaining space and attempt to repartition it says "Partition Failed -- couldn't modify partition map because file system verification failed".
I would like to recoup as much of the 162 GB as feasible, but at this point neither Bootcamp nor Disc Utility seem to be helping.  How can I accomplish this? Thanks.

I have a problem on my early 2011 macbook pro customized with core i5 processor and 500gb hdd regarding BOOTCAMP for Installing Windows 8 on OS 10.9 Mavericks
I tried to install windows 8 with bootcamp on OS X 10.9 Mavericks but while partitioning bootcamp was not responding and then i force quit it. After that i opened disk Utility and it showed no partitions for windows 8.
But then my HDD which had 210GB free later showed as 136.27 Gb free only. IT means that my partition was not successful and it took up 74GB on my HDD.
I dont want to erase my HDD and Reinstall OS X but want a solution to get my 74GB space back on my hdd without troubles of formatting and restoring from backup.

  • [Solved] KDE 4.4: Dolphin no longer sees Windows partition

This is a bit tricky, but I figure someone may have just have come across this bit of oddity... or hopefully, might have an idea of how to fix it.
A week ago, I did a clean install of Arch and KDE.  When I would start Dolphin it would start up and show my Windows partition (labeled like '34 MB Disk' or something like that) in the sidebar.  It was real handy: I could click on it and it would mount my Windows partition - easy to get to files on it.  A week after this, I decided I needed a swap partition so I used gparted to resize my / partition from something close to:
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
    1 32.3kB 23.1GB 23.1GB primary ntfs boot
    3 24.3GB 60.0GB 36.7GB primary ext4
    to:
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
    1 32.3kB 23.1GB 23.1GB primary ntfs boot
    2 23.1GB 24.3GB 1258MB primary linux-swap(v1)
    3 24.3GB 60.0GB 35.7GB primary ext4
I also labeled the Windows partition to 'Windows'.
When I rebooted, I remember opening up Dolphin and there was a partition named 'Windows' on the Panel sidebar.  However, when I went to set up the swap, I noticed that 'fdisk -l' showed the partitions in the wrong order.  At the end of the output was the message, "Partition table entries are not in disk order".  A bit unsure about this, I learned that I can fix this with fdisk (fdisk in the extended menu has a 'fix partition order' option).  After doing this and rebooting, I can no longer seen my Windows partition in Dolphin.
I've tried a couple things, like restarting again, and erasing the dolphin configs (~/.kde4/share/apps/dolphin) with no luck.  I'm not sure if this is a HAL problem, or if the partition table entry is a bit corrupt, or what.  Was hoping someone had an idea.

Um, no.  Good question toad.  This is what I'm getting:
    # mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/win
Unexpected clusters per mft record (-1).
Failed to startup volume: Invalid argument
Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sda1' doesn't have a valid NTFS.
Ok, I've tried a couple things now and got it fixed to a degree.  When I installed a swap partition in the middle of the partitions, this altered GRUB's knowledge of the partition tables, and I had to reinstall it.  During this I accidentally installed GRUB 'setup (hd0,0)' to the Windows partition.  But I don't think this caused the problem.  I say this because when I did [wiki]MBR#Restoring_a_Windows_Boot_Record[/wiki] the Windows partition still didn't show in Dolphin.  Instead, I had to repair the Boot Sector as described by a friendly guy in the Ubuntu forums.  Because this was a Boot Sector issue, it looks like the fdisk command did this.   Anyways, I'll describe it quickly here in case anyone else comes across it.  What you need to do is boot from a LiveCD and either install TestDisk or use a Rescue CD like Parted Magic that does, then start 'testdisk' and do these steps:
    No log
    Choose Disk > Proceed
    Intel
    Advanced
    Select partition > Boot
    Rebuild BS > Write
And voila, next reboot, I'm able to see and mount my Windows partition again.  Phew.  So it looked like the problem is fixed, but not quite.  When I rebooted and tried to load Windows GRUB hung, it showed one line, something like 'GRUB loading stage2' and it wouldn't go any further.  Has anyone run across this before?  I use Windows from time to time so, hoping to find a way to get this fixed.

  • I'm trying to create a Windows partition using Boot Camp. An error comes up telling me that I need to reformat my current partition(s) into one single partition. However, it's already formatted in the correct format, and is already a single partition.

As made clear in the title:

My computer recently had a kernel panic, which apparently the corruption was in the system and needed to be erased and re-installed. I have a complete back-up using an external hard drive, and I am definitely not willing to do another one of those to reformat a partition that is already singular. I restarted the computer after ejecting my back-up, and after turning off time machine (thinking that boot camp was recognizing it as a secondary partition), however the error still occurs.
Is there any way to get around this?

map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
/dev/disk1 on /Volumes/Windows7 (udf, local, nodev, nosuid, read-only, noowners)
From my very basic knowledge - it still looks as if there is only one partition (not including the windows 7 CD necessary to install the windows partition).

  • Cannot access MS office files on OS X partition from windows partition running bootcamp s

I've installed a trial version of Microsoft Office 2010 on the Windows partition of my iMac.  Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac is installed on the OS X partition. When I try to open a file on the OS X partition an error displays saying the file is corrupted or the server is not available.  If I transfer the file to Windows it opens fine.  Other types of files such as a pdf or photo formats open fine with the appropriate Windows programs accessing the OS X partition.  Is this a limitation of the trial version or a basic limitation of Office for Windows?  Office for Mac can open a file on the Windows partition with no problem.
    Thanks for any help.

MSOffice for Windows usually create a temporary hidden file in the same location as the file you open.  Since Windows can't write to the Mac partition, I'm wondering if that's the reason for the error.  (Anyone who knows for certain, correct me if I'm wrong.)
OSX can natevely read and write FAT32 and read NTFS so I'm assuming that the Office for Mac development team made allowances for opening from a read-only NTFS partition (e.g.: Boot Camp partition.)  Of couse, if your Boot Camp partition is FAT32, then there would be no issue with creating any hidden temporary files.

  • How to erase Windows partition with Boot Camp

I used Boot camp to create windowsXP partition, but windows got corrupted and I want to go back to zero by having boot camp erase the windows partition. The boot camp instruction setup guide says to open boot camp assistant, Introduction window and click on the third category " Restore the startup disk to a single volume". However, when I open Boot Camp Assistant there is no Introduction window as shown in the printed guide. Where do I find this so I can restore to a single volume again?
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try downloading the brand new Boot Camp version that Apple just posted within the past week (1.1.2 IIRC). Install the new version and it should give you the introduction screen again where you can remove the Windows partition.

  • Bootcamp Win7 - won't boot from Windows partition or even from the Win7 install DVD

    Late 2011 Mac Mini / Lion / Win 7 64-bit Home Premium.
Incumbent Windows partition has happily run for heavy gaming (World of Warcraft) for some eight months.  Now it stops on boot-up before the Windows logo is displayed, with a very dark blue blank screen.  Attempts to boot from the Windows Install DVD yield the same result, portending that there is more than a corrupt MBR at work here.  I have reset PRAM and SMC, just for good measure.  There have been no recent changes to hardware / peripherals.
Rebuilding the Windows partition with Bootcamp stops at same Dark Blue Screen of Death.  Will start Windows sometimes from first switch-on / dead cold Mini, but then not again in the same day.  OS X Lion mode runs perfectly, booting up as usual with no quirks or delays.
Hardware?  Seems unlikely, except for that suspicion of starting from the dead-cold start.

Do not use a USB3 flash drive. Only USB2 flash drives are supported by Windows installers. Depending on whether your Mac came with a built-in Optical drive or not, you may also need a physical DVD.

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 'C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable'?

    Hi,
Most of my family and i are and have been Mac/Apple enthusiasts for a while, but recently i have been using Windows 7 via bootcamp for certain software and such. Windows was working fine until today, when i started my MacBook Pro 13" computer (Mid 2010) and did the usual thing to get into windows (Hold Alt/Option key while starting and running windows from there) the normal startup screen was not displayed, but there was simply a 'loaidng files' bar at the bottom. after the bar had finished loading, it went straight to disk repair. As soon as the disk repair came up, a message box saying something along the lines of '...C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable.' (there was something before C:/, but i cannot remember exactly what was said). At this point, i could do absolutely nothing but close the message for it to come up again (note that the disk repair was still going on behing this message. (this same thing happens every time i start Windows via bootcamp)
After a while of searching, i found nothing that i thought would help me with the exception of running the Windows 7 Disc and running a system repair. I selected the version to run, then selected the option that runs with the settings of the last time it ran correctly. All seemed fine untill i got to the screen where it ask wether to install (repair and help buttons in the bottom left corner), at which point i clicked on the repair option. A screen saying it was looking for Windows intallations came and went and the repair screen came up and the same message '...C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable' was displayed.
Please help, i can probably fully reinstall Windows 7 via bootcamp and keep all of the documents/files i had, but that would mean i would have to get and reinstall ALL of the programs i had on there, and that would take me almost two full days of fidling around with discs and downloads, let alone the internet usage that would use for the digital versions i bought.
is there a way around this reinstall? Please help.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rylando

Unless you have a backup already you will not be able to save anything, not data files or applications. Of course you will also need to restore the Mac hard drive to as it was prior to the Boot Camp (Windows) partition being created, this must be done with Boot Camp, not Disk Utility. Then reinstall Windows and all applications.
All files currently in the Windows partition will be erased.

I have had windows XP fully working on here before. However, I tried to extend the amount of GB I gave the windwos partition obviously there corrupting the partition so now I can no longer loads windows up. So I want to delete the partition and reinstall.
Yeah you messed up your system. You can't expand, shrink or in any other way do anything to the Windows partition as that will cause it to become non usable and then can't be removed and put back into the Mac partition.
Your only option now is to save all your files, with Time Machine or just copying them to an external drive, and Wipe/Erase/Re-Partition the complete drive and reinstall OS X Snow Leopard.

  • Startup Disk doesn't detect my windows partition

I installed Leopard and used bootcamp to install windows vista ultimate (32-bit). All was working well, switching from os x to vist using the startup disk. I then installed MacFUSE and ntfs-3g. Everything was working fine.
I then decided to get rid of MacFUSE and ntfs-3g. After doing so I could not see my windows partition on finder and Disk Utility was unable to unmount the drive. I tried booting using the Leopard install disk and used that start up to boot into Windows and that worked without any problems.
So I went back to OS X and reinstalled MacFUSE and ntfs-3g. I can access my windows partition again but it does not appear on Startup Disk. I used Disk Utility to verify the partition and this is what I get:
    Verifying volume “disk0s3”
** No NTFS file system checks have been implemented yet.
** Reporting that the volume is fine without checking anything.
    Verify and Repair volume “disk0s3”
** /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix has been disabled because of volume corruption issues.
** If you still want to try fixing your volume, use /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix from the command line...
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    Any ideas?

Disk Utility wasn't designed or tested to know enough to repair NTFS, even with NTFS-3g and MacFuse, but you might want to track down the web page and feedback.
I saw today that Paragon has a program to read/write to NTFS. If you want something reliable and that has support, check it out.

  • /home partition corrupts randomly

My /home partition 'forgets' that it's ext4 every few restarts.  Arch claims it's inconsistent when it tries to read it as an ext2 filesystem.
When I boot up gparted, it says the partition is unallocated.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?  Is my disk going bad?  None of my other partitions/OSes have shown any signs of failing.

As irrelevant as this info might be: sda1 is my boot, sda3 is Windows, and sda5 is Ubuntu.
My home partition corrupted 3 times today, and my data partition corrupted once.  I would 'fix' them by reformatting them (this is a fresh install of Arch, so I didn't lose anything in either partition)
Both of them are now working now.  Is there a log file I can post that would be more helpful to getting to the bottom of this issue?

  • Windows Partition No Longer Shows Up After Accidental Premature Closing of Camptune

    Mac OS X 10.7.5
I was running Paragon Camptune to expand my Windows 7 partition. The progress bar reached the end and stayed there for about 30 minutes. The Camptune window was then accidentally closed and Camptune quit itself. I restarted the computer but the Windows partition no longer shows up when I try to boot it, only Mac OSX and Recovery Disk. The Bootcamp drive is no longer accessable from System Preferences, and the Bootcamp partition folder is no longer accessable in the Devices area of Finder. Camptune no loner recognizes that there was a partition. Thus, I am no longer able to access the partition's contents or delete it and make a new one.
It would be preferable if I could fix the partition and have it accessable again, however I have no problem with deleting it and making a new partition. Any advice? Thanks for your time.

  • IMac no longer boots up to windows partition?

    Hi,
I have a problem where my I installed Windows 7 on my iMac and set it to automatically boot up to the Windows partitionwhen turning on the computer. Suddenly, it's not doing that anymore. It boots up to the Apple partition and when I want to choose partitions, I have to hold down "Alt" upon booting up. I've always had to hold down "Alt" to choose partitions so that's not a problem. The problem is it doesn't automatically boot up to the Windows partition, as I originally set it.
Anyone encounter this problem and have any advice?
    Thank you.

On OSX go to System Preferences the Startup Volume and reset your Windows 7 partition to be the default.
