Windows partition not showing up in finder OR disk utility

doesn't snow leopard have ntfs support out of the box? Well I have windows 7 x64 installed via bootcamp, yet the windows partition will not show up in finder. I checked in disk utility and there is my macintosh HD, and a greyed out partition named disk0s4. It's 120gb, same size as the windows partion, but it says that it is FAT, which I know is not right. I even went so far as to to reformat the whole drive and reinstall both windows 7 and os x, and I am 100% sure it is a NTFS drive, even though it still will not mount in osx and it still says it's FAT in disk utility. What is going on??

Go to Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure External disks is selected.
Restart your Mac then connect the external drive.

  • Windows Shares Not Showing Up In Finder (Master Browser Problem)

Hi, on leopard I had no problems with Windows shares showing up in finder. However, having upgraded to Snow Leopard, I've now lost that ability.
Before I had my Leopard computer set as the master browser. I did this by specifying domain master = yes and preferred master = yes in my smb.conf. However despite importing these settings into Snow Leopard's smb.conf, it is not acting as a master browser.
When I run the command "nmblookup -M -- -" which in Leopard returned my Mac as the master browser, now it says "failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01".
I'm sure this is why the Windows PC is not showing up in finder, but I don't know why the smb-conf isn't taking effect in Snow Leopard, and setting it as the master browser?
Also, I can use Go -> Connect to access my Windows shares, and Mac shares show up in Vista okay.
    Any help appreciated.

Problem fixed upon updating to 10.6.2.

  • Solution for Windows PCs not showing up in Finder

    Hello guys,
after fiddling around with the networking between Windows and Leopard I just wanted to share my solution with you.
In my home network, there are three computers: One Vista machine, one XP machine and my MacBook. I found out that the Windows PCs only did show up in my finder if the Vista computer was turned on AFTER the MacBook (the XP computer didn't matter). This is apparently has something to do with Vista becoming the "master browser" in the SMB network. So you just have to prevent that this happens.
And here's what you can do about it:
On the Vista computer, go to Start->Run and type 'regedit'. Then browse to 'HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters' and change the Value of 'MaintainServerList' from 'Auto' to 'No'. Then reboot the PC.
Now it shouldn't matter which computer is turned on first or last.
NOTE: It still can take up to 15 minutes until the Windows PC show up in Finder.

Thanks for posting this solution. I have 2 PC's plus BootCamp and this did the trick.

  • IMac running slow and windows partition not showing

I have an iMac 12.1, 2.5 ghz, i5, 4 gb ram,  500 gb hd (41 gb used) running 10.7.4.  We installed windows parallel and windows 7 about three months ago. We rarely used windows and now windows doesn't work, although the icons are there. I tried to uninstall via boot camp and the partition does not show. The iMac is now running extremely slow except when running in safe mode.
How can I delete or reinstall windows and speed up the iMac?
    Thank you

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when you try to launch Parrallels Desktop.
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.

Although when I go into bootcamp it shows there is still 20gb assigned to windows but I screwed it up as I tried to extend the amount of GB I allowed to windows without reinstalling it. However I don't know what to do in Disk Utility now?
    Please can someone help. thanks

    Just realised I didn't mention...
I have had windows XP fully working on here before. However, I tried to extend the amount of GB I gave the windwos partition obviously there corrupting the partition so now I can no longer loads windows up. So I want to delete the partition and reinstall.
Yeah you messed up your system. You can't expand, shrink or in any other way do anything to the Windows partition as that will cause it to become non usable and then can't be removed and put back into the Mac partition.
Your only option now is to save all your files, with Time Machine or just copying them to an external drive, and Wipe/Erase/Re-Partition the complete drive and reinstall OS X Snow Leopard.

  • Windows computer not showing up in finder

    Hi,
at the office we have a network of 4 windows computers and one mac which I use. In the finder I can see only 3 of the 4 windows machines. I checked the settings for the Windows computer that isn't showing up and it seems to be the same as the other three. What am I missing?
    Thank you in advance

Assuming that the missing machine is part of the same Workgroup/Domain:
Open Terminal and enter "nmblookup -M workgroupname" (without the quotes, and replacing workgroupname with the name of your workgroup or domain.
This will list the IP address of the machine that is the "master browser" of your network. If you are on a domain, the address should be that of your domain controller. There should only be one ip address listed.
You can then get that machine to list the shares that it see on the network by entering:
    "smbclient -L ipaddressofmasterbrowser"
You should be able to just press enter when it asks for a password.
This will list available shares and servers.

  • Recent hardware change - Windows 7 not showing up in finder

    Hi all
First of all heres a quick overview of my current set-up
13" macbook pro with OSX 10.6.4 / windows 7 bootcamped
Desktop with Windows 7 / Ubuntu 10.04 LTS dual boot
    Desktop with Windows 7
Routed through AEBS with another TB external drive attached as NAS
(i just like to play with different os')
so here's the problem, I have 4 hard drives in my windows 7/ubuntu box all of which are shared (its my server and i dont know enough about raid drives to sort that out without losing all my datas)
I have these drives shared in ubuntu as well as windows 7 and can access everything fine from the other windows 7 box when the server is in either win 7 or ubuntu (ie drives C,D,E & F are all accessible with no problems)
When the server is in ubuntu the mac can connect to all drives no problems
when the mac is in Win7 I can connect to all drives on the server no problems
when the server is in win 7 the mac wont connect to drives C and E fine as well as other folders such as the public ones
HOWEVER the mac will not connect to drives D and F (these are not system files on either drive)
but its all ok cus i just figured it out .... **** permissions on win 7 side... just weird that osx was the only system to throw up the issues
SSSoooo for anyone having issues with accessing shares on your windows 7 pc (i have an open network in my house so not really good if its a share house type place)
Add the guest account in the security section of your windows drives properties as well as your sharing section (or for that matter any account you see fit if your more security conscious)
which after figuring that out i might just do hehe

  • External hard drive not recognized in Finder or Disk Utility

Two weeks ago, my 2007 black Macbook stopped recognizing the hard drive. I was told by some IT friends that the controller had likely failed and I needed to purchase a new laptop. I removed the hard drive and placed it into an enclosure (turning it into an external hard drive) and hooked it up to a new Macbook Pro which I purchased a couple days ago. The external hard drive did not show up in Finder or Disk Utility but the light on the enclosure was on and it was making a very soft whirring noise and got warm after a few minutes. I usually backed up the hard drive but, of course, hadn't done it in a couple of weeks before it died so everything I worked on in that time is lost to me at the moment. I'm trying to avoid paying tons of money for a data recovery service so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

That whirring noise might be due to physical damage on the disk. I know data recovery services are costly but that remains only the solution for damaged HDD. You can get latest quotes on services from different dealers. Proceed only when your data is very important to be recovered.

HDD is a Toshiba 1TB, partitioned into two 500GB partitions.

Yes, sharing a TM disk is a bad idea, and disks are cheap enough so that you don't need to.
    Now
Have you tried to repair the disk yet

  • Windows Vista Computer not showing up in finder

Hi, my WIndows Vista computer is not showing up in finder under Shared. I can connect to my PC from my mac by clicking on finder, go, connect to server and typing in the PC's IP Address, Username and Password. I can also see my Mac computer from my PC running Windows Vista.
What's weird is that it was showing up for awhile but I recently changed my network key and unchecked file sharing on both my Mac and PC.
Afterwards I re-enabled file sharing on both my mac and Vista computer but my PC won't show up in finder.
I can connect to my PC and see the computer in finder but when I click eject, it disappears. I would like it to remain in finder. Is there some setting that I need to enable? Please help

  • External hard drive not showing up in finder

    Hi,
I have a LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0 1TB external hard drive for more than a year or so (probably longer than that). The hard drive has 2 partitions with one formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) <named MAC> and the other MS-DOS (FAT) for windows <named as FOR WIN>.
The MAC volume has been working fine yesterday then suddenly it just started to transfer files very slowly and had problems unmounting when I am done transferring files saying it is in used by an application when it is not. So I had to force eject the the MAC volume while the FOR WIN volume ejected fine. However, here comes the problem.
Once I reconnected the external hard drive, it does show up in disk utility but not in finder. Also, the FOR WIN volume showed up as disk1s2 in disk utility. I tried using disk utility's verify and repair disk and couldn't fix the FOR WIN volume so I gave up on that since I don't have any important files in that volume. On the other hand, I could run verify and repair to get the MAC volume mounted. Through that I could get some files copied but soon finder hangs on me and wouldn't open even after relaunch which led me to disconnect the drive by just unplugging the USB. Now when I connect the drive, it again shows up in disk utility but not mounted and when I try to use the verify and repair all I get is:
    Verifying Volume "MAC"
    checking file system
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
    Verify and Repair volume "MAC"
    Checking file system
    Volume repair complete
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required
and it's stuck at "updating boot support........" I've let it ran for like 6 hours and it's still at that stage. Had enough, closed disk utility and reconnected the harddrive and it's still the same showing up in disk utility but not mounting.
Could anyone please help? Thank you!

That's great thanks. cmd-shift-c brings it back.
then it should also show up on the desktop. go to finder preferences->general and check the boxes to show external and CD drives.
Incidentally, I now have the opposite problem, I can't eject it. I get the message that the disk is in use, try quitting applications. I quite often get this with mounted drives or flash drives. Is there any way of finding out which particular application has a given device open ?
    sometimes spotlight keeps drives busy.
you can see what's doing it by running the following terminal command
    sudo lsof /volumes/lacie

A USB thumb drive with data created in Windows is not showing up on my desktop. Do I need a different driver or something?

OK in order to read those files you will need MS Office for Mac or install MS Windows on your Mac. You can get MS Office for Mac from anyone that sells Apple products. I would suggest the Apple Store, Best Buy, Amazon etc...For help getting the data from the memory stick I'd recommend visiting your local Apple Store or AASP and they can help you move it. It should be as simple as plugging the USB drive into your USB port and then open a Finder Window where you will see the drive on the left  pane. If you don't know what Finder is or how to open a new Finder window you need the sites I've noted below!!!
Because you are new to OS X I would strongly recommend you bookmark and frequently visit the following web sites:

  • Shared devices not showing up in finder

Shared devices on my network are not showing up in Finder on my MacBook Air. Problem just began in the last 24 hours, and is limited to just this computer. Have done usual things -- checking, unchecking shared devices in Finder; relaunching Finder; restarting computer. Any ideas?

Your problem is very common under Snow. At first my shares did not show up under shared in finder windows. I, then, of course, used "Connect to Server" to connect to the shares--both Mac and PC. I found that the more I kept the shares active the more likely they were show up under shared. Then, I discovered that if I kept the computers from sleeping during the period of needed access they would tend to stay in shared without nearly so much keeping the connections active.
If you do not like the above work around, then there are two other possibilities. You can elect to show mounted items on your desktop. Do that and connect to each share. Then, go > users > unlock > + login options > try dragging the mounted shares to the login item window. If successful, then the shares should be available at login.
Another approach is to mount and connect as indicated above. Then, making an alias to the share should at least make things faster.
