Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod

I have bought my iPod (20GB, click wheel) one year ago with an extended warranty of 3 years. It was working well all the time. But now my Windows computer doesn't recognize the iPod any more although I haven't changed anything on it.
The battery can still be charged using the docking station. But as soon as I plug in the iPod on my laptop USB port the iPod freezes. The only message on my laptop screen says that the external hardware can not be recognized.
The USB port is working properly.
I have also tried to install the iPod update and to reset the iPod. Nothing is working. I guess I can't restore the iPod since it's not even recognized.
Thanks, Annemarie

I thought I was alone with this problem. I recently went traveling last weekend, and began to think the X-Ray machines killed my iPod!
Whenever I connect my iPod to any computer using the USB connection, Windows will not mount it as a removable drive. The cable is good, because the iPod is being charged but Windows will not recognize it.
I have tried all the different USB ports, even on several different computers. Including my work, laptop, and my desktop. Windows will not recognize my iPod using the USB connection.
I'm in the process of restoring my desktop computer after a hard-drive failure (lucky me all my vital data were on a separate drive), so my desktop has a nice clean install of Windows.
My desktop has a firewire port, so I tried connecting to that port and Ta-Da, Windows recognized and mounted my iPod as a removable drive! Unfortunately my laptop nor my work computers do not have firewire ports.
Can anyone explain why the USB function suddenly stopped working? Does this mean I need to restore and loose all my music from my iPod? I do not let iTunes manage my music, I do that all myself. I can put my music back onto the device but it will be time consuming. If anyone knows the answer to this USB problem, perhaps you can reply to this thread or contact me.
Thanks,
Joe Vill

  • Everything deleted & iTunes & Updater doesn't recognize iPod

Yeah, that's my problem. Funny thing is, I didn't do anything to the iPod to cause the problem. One day I was just adding songs to the iPod & using it like a hard drive (things I've done before with no problems) & then I turn it on two days later to find all my songs deleted. It was returned to factory settings when I didn't do anything.
I hooked iPod up to my computer & it's not recognized by iTunes or the Updater. My computer, however, recognizes it & says that the iPod has the memory it did before the problem. I read the article for when iPod isn't recognized by iTunes or iPod, but I don't know if this would also apply because I also have the another problem. I didn't try this yet because I gave my iPod to some one to help me. He couldn't solve my problem so I'm turning it over to all of you.
    Thanks so much!

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod even though Itunes appears!!!!

Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod even though Itunes pops up! I dropped it like 1 foot in the air once and landed on concrete. Now everything's fine until I play a song and it will just skip, freeze or just play a little bit and then skip. I don't think this is the problem but this is getting more wierd. I've tried almost every solution in this site but none of them worked so please, anyone, help me if you have a solution to this problem!!!

When your iPod does not appear in iTunes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771
You might want to reset your iPod to prevent any more skipping and freezing. Press and hold the MENU and CENTER buttons - at the same time - until the Apple logo shows. This should take about 6 seconds. Also, you want to do this while your iPod is connected to your computer.

  • My computer using Windows 8 doesn't recognize my Canon Rebel. How do I fix this?

My computer using Windows 8 doesn't recognize my Canon Rebel. How do I fix this?

    Hi MWCRILLY,
To connect your camera to a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer or Windows 8 computer, you'll need to change your camera's "Communication" mode.
To set your camera up for this, please do the following:
With the camera disconnected from the computer, turn the camera on.  Press the "Menu" button.  Now select the [Wrench, Hammer, 2] tab.  Scroll down to "Communication" and press the "Set" button.
Select the [Print/PTP] and press "Set".  This process is more completely described (and illustrated too!) on page 121 of your Digital Rebel XT instruction manual.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn the camera on.  Your computer should now recognize and have access to your Digital Rebel XT.
Unfortunately, Canon software cannot communicate with the Rebel XT when operating in this mode.
You may download your pictures using Windows Photo Gallery.  If you haven't already done so, you may retrieve and install this program from Microsoft's download.live.com.

  • My Windows PC doesn't recognize my iPod as an iPod

    Hi,
I recently bought an iPod Touch 5 gen and when I plug it to my computer it doesn't recognize it as an iPod but as a non specified device. What's the matter? iTunes doesn't start up when i plug the iPod in, even if I check the box that says it. I must sync the iPod manually, and last.fm software doesn't recognize it as an iPod as well. I tried to plug my iPod to another PC an it works just fine. I cleaned the system registry but it didn't worked. I use Windows 8.1 and the latest version of iTunes. The strange thing is that even when the iPod isn't plugged in, iTunes says that it is plugged in. I really don't know what to do.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize IPOD Nano (2nd Gen), but Windows XP does

I'm a longtime happy owner of an IPOD Mini and bought a second Gen IPOD Nano a few months ago that works great. I have two identical P4 Sony Vaios that I back up/clone from one to the other every so often to keep them as identical as possible. It's been some months though since I've backed up/cloned my primary laptop to the secondary, and the 2nd Gen Nano isn't being recognized by ITunes on my primary laptop, only my secondary laptop. However Windows recognizes the Nano just fine on the primary laptop on all 3 USB 2.0 ports (I haven't tried my Mini recently), and I can browse the file system of the Nano, but ITunes just doesn't see it.
As I mentioned, my secondary laptop works just fine with the Nano, both Windows XP AND ITunes recognizes it and can update it, but I don't want to have to use that computer JUST for updating my IPOD, and pretty soon I need to back up my primary laptop to my secondary. I've actually only been holding off on that because I can't get my Nano to be recgonized by ITunes with my primary laptop and don't want to screw them both up. Cloning my secondary laptop to become my primary isn't an option, the file system is many months outdated, I need to get the Nano working with ITunes on my primary laptop.
This is definitely a software/driver/service issue, I can take the hard drive out of my secondary laptop, put it in my primary, and ITunes will recognize the Nano just fine. I can take the hard drive out of my primary laptop, put it in my secondary, and ITunes can't see the Ipod. I've upgraded ITunes twice on the primary laptop in the last few months with no improvement, so that hasn't helped.
I really don't know what else to do at this point, I was under the impression that any drivers needed are installed by ITunes, and as long as Windows recognizes the device (which it does) everything should be fine and ITunes should recognize it. I've checked my services and there is only one IPOD related service that I've found (it's actually called "Ipod Service") and I've confirmed that service is running and starts automatically. I presume that service is needed and isn't a legacy from my IPOD Mini and an old version of ITunes.
If, after digesting the above information, anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. This has gotten to be somewhat annoying.
    Thanks
    P4   Windows XP Pro

Nevermind. I uninstalled ITunes completely as well as the IPOD updater program (I think that's what it was basically called) that was installed on my system. I then rebooted, tested the Nano to make sure Windows recognized it, then tested it (successfully) with Winamp and the Winamp IPOD plugin. It was already working properly with Winamp and the IPOD plugin even when ITunes wasn't recognizing it so there was no change there. Once everything checked out I reinstalled the current version of ITunes and it FINALLY recognized the IPOD. It said there was a new software version available for the Nano so I went ahead and allowed it to download and install the update to 1.1. The update went smoothly and once the Nano restarted ITunes again recognized it. No clue what the problem was that created this error condition initially, but perhaps someone else will benefit from this information. I would have thought that reinstalling ITunes at least 3 times, including 2 version upgrades, would have resolved the problem, but it took removing ITunes and the IPOD software completely to resolve it.
