Windows PC's and SMB

Hi there,
I currently have a MacMini Server running Lion.
Each user has an individual login.
I am having problems with SMB between the server and the Windows7 PC's on my network.
Every so often(hours or on login) the authentication is broken and they need to retype their password to access the shared drives.
I have looked at using the NET USE command and it does not seem to have provided a solution.
Also if I try to create a batch file to re-add the drives on login it says that I am only allowed to have one connection to the server at a time.
if anyone could shed some light on how to fix this error it would be terrific!
Thank you,
Gianpaolo

We had the same issue on our server.  We read that SMB 1 & 2 is no longer supported in OS X server for either Lion or Mtn. Lion.  We tried to switch from SMB 2 to SMB 1, and that was no better.  Since SMB 3 is not an option, I guess we are out of luck.  It appears that Apple has decided to dump on small businesses like mine that have a Mac server, several MacBooks, a Mac Mini, multiple iPads, and 2 PC's (win 7) that we use (1 for QuickBooks and 1 for Autocad).  I guess that is why the server software is $20, so we won't complain too much about wasting our time and money to upgrade.  Our solution has been to re-build the server back to Snow Leopard (which we bought for $500) and deal with the problems each of our MacBooks (which are all on Lion or Mtn. Lion) has in communicating with it.  It's bad customer service by Apple either way, but it's better to deal with the latter issues and be able to do accounting and CAD.  Apple, are you listening?  I guess Apple thinks it's OK to act as poorly to it's customers as Microsoft.  What a shame.

  • Performance problems with DFSN, ABE and SMB

    Hello,
We have identified a problem with DFS-Namespace (DFSN), Access Based Enumeration (ABE) and SMB File Service.
Currently we have two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers providing the domain-based DFSN in functional level Windows Server 2008 R2 with activated ABE.
The DFSN servers have the most current hotfixes for DFSN and SMB installed, according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968429/en-us and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2473205/en-us
We have only one AD-site and don't use DFS-Replication.
Servers have 2 Intel X5550 4 Core CPUs and 32 GB Ram.
    Network is a LAN.
    Our DFSN looks like this:
    \\contoso.com\home
        Contains 10.000 Links
Drive mapping on clients to subfolder \\contoso.com\home\username
    \\contoso.com\group
        Contains 2500 Links
Drive mapping on clients directly to \\contoso.com\group
On \\contoso.com\group we serve different folders for teams, projects and other groups with different access permissions based on AD groups.
We have to use ABE, so that users see only accessible Links (folders)
We encounter sometimes multiple times a day enterprise-wide performance problems for 30 seconds when accessing our Namespaces.
After six weeks of researching and analyzing we were able to identify the exact problem.
Administrators create a new DFS-Link in our Namespace \\contoso.com\group with correct permissions using the following command line:
    dfsutil.exe link \\contoso.com\group\project123 \\fileserver1\share\project123
dfsutil.exe property sd grant \\contoso.com\group\project123 CONTOSO\group-project123:RX protect replace
This is done a few times a day.
There is no possibility to create the folder and set the permissions in one step.
DFSN process on our DFSN-servers create the new link and the corresponding folder in C:\DFSRoots.
At this time, we have for example 2000+ clients having an active session to the root of the namespace \\contoso.com\group.
Active session means a Windows Explorer opened to the mapped drive or to any subfolder.
The file server process (Lanmanserver) sends a change notification (SMB-Protocol) to each client with an active session \\contoso.com\group.
All the clients which were getting the notification now start to refresh the folder listing of \\contoso.com\group
This was identified by an network trace on our DFSN-servers and different clients.
Due to ABE the servers have to compute the folder listing for each request.
DFS-Service on the servers doen't respond for propably 30 seconds to any additional requests. CPU usage increases significantly over this period and went back to normal afterwards. On our hardware from about 5% to 50%.
Users can't access all DFS-Namespaces during this time and applications using data from DFS-Namespace stop responding.
Side effect: Windows reports on clients a slow-link detection for \\contoso.com\home, which can be offline available for users (described here for WAN-connections: http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2011/12/14/slow-link-with-windows-7-and-dfs-namespaces.aspx)
Problem doesn't occure when creating a link in \\contoso.com\home, because users have only a mapping to subfolders.
Currently, the problem doesn't occure also for \\contoso.com\app, because users usually don't use Windows Explorer accessing this mapping.
Disabling ABE reduces the DFSN freeze time, but doesn't solve the problem.
Problem also occurs with Windows Server 2012 R2 as DFSN-server.
There is a registry key available for clients to avoid the reponse to the change notification (NoRemoteChangeNotify, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812669/en-us)
This might fix the problem with DFSN, but results in other problems for the users. For example, they have to press F5 for refreshing every remote directory on change.
Is there a possibility to disable the SMB change notification on server side ?
    TIA and regards,
    Ralf Gaudes

  • Digital Filing broken with windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2?

    Hello
Recently upgraded my machines so now I have Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 running. The scanning from my Officejet L7680 to a network share on one of these machines is no longer working.
Looking into it with network monitors I can see that the login of the user and password is working but then the save of the file on the share gives and error.
In windows 8.1 it starts creating the file but cannot add content to it (so the file is 0 Bytes in size) on Server 2012 R2 the creation of the file already gives and error.
Searching around the web seems to indicate that changes in the SMB protocol on the latest windows versions are the cause of this and other MFP suppliers are providing firmware updates to fix this. There seems no way to fix this at the Windows side.
Can HP confirm this issue and indicate which all in ones will be able to connect to network shares on these latest windows version ? With or without a firmware update.

I can confirm that I'm experiencing the same issue on my Windows 8.1 x64 machine and Windows 2012 R2 Essentials. Will there ever be a firmware update for the L7680 printer so we can get this functionality working again?

  • Can't see shares between Windows XP PCs and iMac

I have an Intel iMac running 10.4.9. I have 2 Windows XP-based PCs. One Windows PC and the iMac are connected wirelessly. The other Windows PC is on wired Ethernet. On both the Windows PCs and iMac the firewalls are disabled. The machines are on the same IP subnet (192.168.2.x)
Windows file sharing is turned on via the Mac's System Preferences. In addition, I've created an SMB share to another volume using SharePoints. I also set the SMB workgroup of the of the machines to a common name. Likewise, I have shared directories on both Windows PCs.
My problem is that I can't access the shares on the iMac from the Windows PCs and vice versa. The Windows PCs can see each others' shares.
One thing I've noticed is that I can't ping the iMac from a Windows PC, but I'm not sure if that service is normally running on the iMac. I can ping both of the Windows PCs from the iMac. I can see the computername of the iMac in the Windows Network list of workgroup computers, but when I click on it, I get a message that it's not accessible and that the network path was not found. I don't see the Windows PC's workgroup in the Mac's Network browser via the Finder at all. I also can't connect using the "Connect to Server command" and directly entering the IP address as "smb://192.168.2.2/sharename" I just get the "Connecting..." window and the candycane progress bar indefinitely.
This all worked at one point with a previous router, but I didn't use any sharing for a month or two and switched routers. But basically the network's config is the same.
Any ideas how to get sharing working in either direction?
    Thanks,
    Judd

Well I've double checked and under the Sharing preference, if I click on the Firewall option (tab), it says "Firewall Off" with a "Start" button below it. I also tried turning it on (with the various services that I want to enable checked in the list below it) and turning it back off. Same result: I can see the iMac in the Windows network neighborhood (and the iMac's iTunes shared library name in iTunes) but if I try to access the share or the iTunes library, the Windows PC fails to connect.
Is there some command I can issue in Terminal to better see what state the firewall is in?
Yes, I have a wireless router, through which the Windows PC and iMac are connecting.
    Thanks,
    Judd

  • Windows XP - folders and files

I am just doing some background research with Windows XP and the Mac server. What I am looking for is ie: Mac 10.4 client connected to a Windows 2003 server when saving a file might not be able to becuase the file path is too long. Does an error occur like this when windows is saving to a Mac server? Any other types of errors occur? I will be sharing the server with AFP and SMB. Please provide any insight or information that might hurt Windows users

  • Is there a fix for terrible performance of file transfers using finder via CIFS and SMB?

I am connecting to an EMC VNXe running Celera file server and am getting abysmal file transfer performance using both CIFS and SMB-  what gives? This seems to be a long-standing issue- any good work-arounds or solutions?

I rarely see cover art issues unless the cover art embedded in the file is poor to begin with.
1000x1000 is probably overkill anyway (and if you had several 1000 large cover art images, could eat at AppleTV's memory) though I must admit I always try to get good hi-res images and don't like anything much below 500x500 or 600x600.  There's no hard and fast rule but even a few 300x300 images I have look reasonable at normal viewing distance.
I wonder as you say if it might be an issue with iTunes for Windows as I'm on OS X.  Actually that reminds me of another issue I have.

  • Windows Server Disconnecting Mac SMB Shares Randomly

The basic plot is I have a Mac Server sharing out files on AFP and SMB. I'm mounting one of those files shares on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Randomly the volume disconnects from the Windows server for a short period, somewhere around 20-30 minutes, and then reconnects. This happens 1-2 times a week.
I'm authentacation to the file share with user account 'Newforma". I have this same user account authentacating for files on other servers as well. At times one server will drop the authentacation while there is no issue with the other server. See the link below for a screenshot.

    The Specs on machines:
    Mac Server (dcfiles)
         Xserve2,1
         10.6.6
         Open Directory Master
Services running: Open Directory, AFP, and SMB
    Windows Server (STUDIOSDC10)

         Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
         Service pack 1 x 64
Services running: setup as a Newforma Project Center Server, 9th edition.
My Windows server authenticates to our AD server for login, then files are mounted with authentication from our OD server. This does not cause any problems on the other windows servers and it's the same process that my desktop users have. They authenticate to AD for login, and OD for files. We do not bind AD or OD in any way.
Randomly though when I log into my Windows Server (DC10), There is a red 'X' on my mounted file share. If I double click I get an error message that the network volume doesn't exist. Nothing in the Windows Server Logs that I can find that point to an issue.
I believe the issue is the smb service running on my Mac 10.6 server (dcfiles). I think this because when my files are disconnected from the windows sesrver, I can try to authentacate to the Mac server from my mac desktop with AFP and everything works fine. But If I try to connect to the same file share with smb it doesn't connect. No error messages about wrong passwords or such, it never presents me with a login window. Just says the volume doesn't exist.
When I check the smb logs on the Mac server, I find this repeating over and over, it's pretty standard and in there all the time, even when I"m not having issues.

    What I've Already Tried:
         - Stopping and restarting the SMB service
         - Adding "smb ports = 139” to the smb.conf file on the Mac server
    What I'm Considering Trying:
         - Deleting and recreating the the 'Newforma' user account from Workgroup Manager on the Mac server
         - Making the 'Newforma' user account an admin
         - Fearing I might have bigger authentacation issues, demoting my OD master to Stand Alone and re-pormoting to Master.
While I continue to research, document, and monitor the issue ..... any thoughts or ideas would be appreaciated.

  • Effect of Disabling NetBIOS and SMB in Financial Reporting

    HI-
I've done testing for some times, I haven't encountered any errors but I'm still curious does anyone ever do disabling NetBIOS and SMB on windows server, and encountered problem with workspace, FR, or HFM?
    Regards,
    Will

    Hi,
Here is the possible way to achieve it:
    1. Insert a row (may be as row 1) in the report which has product as "User prompt".
    2. mark this row as hidden always
    3. User other rows as level0 of product in row 1
    4. Use MEMBERALIAS in your header to use product as dimension & row as row1
    Hope it helps !!

  • Data Protection Manager 2012 on Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 and NAS connectivity

Hi, we currently use Symantec Backup Exec 2010/2012 on Windows 2008 R2 servers storing the data on two LAN-connected NAS servers. As part of our MS licensing package, we have obtained System Center 2012. I'm seeing if DPM can replace our BE software, but
I'm running into a major hurdle, I can't connect (Add) either of the NAS machines. I see on DPM posts where you need to have a physical connection to the NAS (iSCSi or fiber channel) not an option on the NAS (Thecus N8800 & N8900 (no ability to add cards)
and SMB 3.0 (appears to be a Windows 2012-only option ... I dread 2012 and don't want to move to it right now). Can my virtualized (hyper-v) W2008 R2 server see a non-connected NAS and if so, how do I pull this off.
    Thanks

    Hi
DPM needs local storage to connect to. you cannot use a NAS or USB device to backup to like with other backup software.

  • Snow Leopoard and SMB Shares

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I am unable to connect to one share on a Windows 2000 servers via SMB. All my other shares seem to be working normally.
    The error is:
There was an error connecting to the server win2kserver. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
In my Console I find this:
    Sep 9 14:02:26 pgcit106 /System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent[4719] : smb_mount: mount failed to win2kserver/marketing : syserr = RPC struct is bad
    Any ideas?

Good morning. I use file shares connected to a Win2K machine through Snow Leopard, but have found that it is fussy about re-entering user credentials.
So make sure that your Win2K credentials are entered on your mac as:
    Username: <machinename>\<win2kusername>
    Password: <win2k password>

  • Configuring Windows 8.1 for SMB 3.0 multichannel

    Hello,
I can't find any useful articles on how to configure multichannel SMB 3.0 on Windows 8.1.    I have 2 PCs connected and I often exchange several TB of data between them.    Each PC is running Windows 8.1 x 64 enterprise.
I have 2 onboard realtek cards and 1 add on Intel CT card.
I would like to have 2 nics directly attached between the 2 PCs with no gateway for the transfers and 1 nic just for internet on each with a default gateway.
Any info would be helpful with details.  I found many articles about what you need -e .g. a nic with rss receive and that it is enabled by default but no actual implementation details for Windows 8.1 - plenty for Windows server 2012 and how you get
better performance and hyper V improvements but I need a spoonfeed actual how to configure it article if possible.
    Thanks

I think the process is just not set a gateway if you aren't using them for internet, set the ips in the same subnet.
Only problem is even though under my network settings advanced - both show rss as enabled, powershell doesn't see them as rss capable.  They have the latest drivers.

  • Difference between afp and smb

I'm running OS X server 10.5.8. unlimited license with only file sharing enabled.
When a large number of users (more than 7 or 8) try to log on the server at the same time, the server goes AWOL. A few users get on and that's it. When I check the server preferences, file sharing has turned off by itself. When I try to restart it, it just turns off again. After waiting a while, I can turn it on again, or it'll turn on again by itself after a good long while.
This is in the setting of a computer lab. The users get on via afp. Would smb work better? What's the difference between the two?
I'll appreciate any help or suggestions on this.
    Hans

When I check the server preferences, file sharing has turned off by itself. When I try to restart it, it just turns off again
That's clearly not normal. What do the logs have to say?
The users get on via afp. Would smb work better? What's the difference between the two?
AFP was designed by Apple and is the native file sharing protocol in Mac OS X.
SMB was designed by Microsoft and is the native file sharing protocol in Windows.
At one time Macs would use AFP, Windows systems would use SMB. That line is now blurred by the fact that Mac OS X can talk both AFP and SMB, and Windows machines can be persuaded to talk AFP.
There are some under the hood differences and in general your Mac clients should use AFP if possible. Whether SMB is more or less reliable in your case depends on why the server is having these issues in the first place - if it's a resource issue (i.e. not enough memory/cpu/etc.) then enabling SMB is likely to make things worse since the server now has an additional process to keep running.

  • Mac pro xserve 10.6.8 AD and SMB issue

    Hi,
I have configured Mac OS XServe 10.6.8. This Server is joined with Windows 2008 AD Server.
    I have done coming below:
    1. Server Admin.app
    2. File Sharing -> careated new share folder "test". This folder is located this path "/Volumes/Macintos HD/test"
    3. Under Permisstion tab i have clicked + button, then i got new tab "Users & Groups". Their i can see all my windows AD users.
    4. I have selacted my user name and two more users full access.
    5. Then i have enabled AFP and SMB protocols.
    6. Then i have saved the configrstion.
    7. Then i went my mac book pro laptop i tryied connect to server afp://192.168.1.5/test
    8. I can access the share Folder.
    9. Then i have tried smb://192.168.1.5/test
    10. User Name and Password not autendicating.
can some please help me how to resolve this issue.
    Thanks

Before upgrading to Lion, I would recommend playing with OpLocks on the SMB share. Oplocks will not allow access to a folder if it is use by another share. Try turning these off and on and making sure that nobody is connected to the share by either protocol.
    Worth a shot.
