Windows Reformatted My iPod Hard Disk

My husband was reformatting a cd, which was in the e drive. My iPod was connected at the same time. It appears that Windows reformatted both the cd in the e drive and the iPod hard disk at the same time. My iPod was working before my husband reformatted the cd, but after windows said it completed formatting the cd, he noticed the ipod no longer indicated it was charging. He immediately checked the iPod and it did not work at all. My iPod will not power up in any fashion, is not recogized by Windows, and is not in the source list in iTunes as there is no source list in iTunes. I have tried all the basis restart tips available through the online tutorials but none have worked.

Did you have any luck checking for bad sectors? Restoring the iPod may not deal with certain disk errors which should be addressed via regular disk utilities.
Hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.

  • Time Machine requires me to reformat my external hard disk

I have a Maxtor 1TB external hard disk that works fine with my Mac. It has been formatted to FAT32 format so I can use it on Mac and PC. When I tried to setup Time Machine to back up to this drive, I was told I needed to reformat my external hard disk as the format was not recognised. Do I have to get a separate external hard disk to use with Time Machine? Why the discrepancy in formats? If I get another external hard disk and reformat it according to the requirement by Time Machine, will that mean that I cannot use that hard disk with a PC? What is the required format recognised by Time Machine anyway.
    Thanks for your answers.

Yes, unless the PC has software such as MacDrive installed.
What is the required format recognised by Time Machine anyway.
Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Time Machine has usage requirements beyond Mac OS X's general ones.

i reformatted my daughter's 5th gen. 30Gig thru 'my computer' but itunes still wont recognize it so i can't use the RESTORE on it. anyway, plug the usb in your ipod and wait for 'my computer' to recognize it then right click on it and and choose format.

  • Ipod hard disk spins continiously when connected to PC, kills battery?

when ipod 4th generation is connected to PC/Windows Pro, connecting to itunes and downloading songs, hard disk spins continuioulsy discharging the full battery in 5 minutes. Battery is good because it will play 5 hours on full charge. Genius at Apple Genius Bar say hard disk spins continiously when it's hook to PC, he say this discharges battery, genius does not know why HD spins continously.... say it should only spin once every 20 min or so while downloading song, when hooked to mac at genius bar, downloads songs as designed

if does not try the following as the spins may caused by the bad sectors on the HD of the iPod
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”

Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked

  • Windows has detected a hard disk problem

I just got a warning from windows that I have a hard disk problem then Toshiba Utility notifies me with the following:
    Disk0
Your HDD has the SMART Predict Failure function which monitors the HDD operating status. Your HDD is experiencing a problem and SMART monitoring software predicts that the HDD will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends you create a back-up for your HDD data. Then contact an authorized service provider in order to check your drive and purchase a new replacement drive if necessary.
I have never had problems with a hard disk, all I know is that I should get a backup drive as soon as possible. After I back up my files and everything....what is the next step? Take it to a repair man to fix, get a new harddrive, contact about warranty, what exactly do you do with this kind of situation? Is it fixable?

  • Itunes for window on an external hard disk

I have my itunes library on an external hard disk and it is working fine but I am about to get a new computer. What is the easiset way to get my new installation of itunes to view the library on the external hard disk.
If anybody knows the answer can they please reply to this, thanks.
      Windows XP Pro

    - Save the following files from the old PC:
-- 1) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
-- 2) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    - Copy these files to your new PC somewhere safe
    - Install iTunes on the new PC
    - Configure your ExHD to attach to the new PC as the same drive letter as on the old PC
    - Attach the ExHD to the new PC
    - Copy the two saved database files (XML & ITL) into the 'My Music\iTunes' folder of the new PC - replace the smaller, new files that are there
    - Open iTunes
Your new PC's Library should be a clone of the old PC's. These are high-level instructions. If you feel you need more, post back.

  • Can't enable iPod hard disk

I am trying to enable my 30GB iPod to be used as a hard disk to save documents. When I initially plug my iPod into my Mac, the iPod icon appears briefly on the desktop, then disappears.
Then, when I try to select "Enable Disk Use" on the iPod Summary page, I get the message "Waiting for iPod..." for about a minute, followed by "The settings were not saved for the iPod because it could not be found."
The funny thing is, when I used my iPod as a hard disk in the past it worked fine. But ever since I upgraded to iTunes version 7.0.2, it started giving me this error message and I have been unable to use my iPod as a hard disk ever since.

I haven't seen this problem since iTunes 6 and even then I was never able to find a complete answer to the "Preferences not saved" error as it was called then or any knowledge base articles with an official explanation. I did however find a workaround in a previous discussion but I don't know how if you could get it to work with iTunes 7. It involved connecting your iPod and in the short time that it was still visible on the desktop just as iTunes is opening, going to Preferences>iPod and ticking "enable disk use". You had to be quick but it could be done. In iTunes 7 it would mean quickly clicking on the iPod icon in the source list to bring up the Summary tab so you could enable disk use while the iPod was still showing on the desk top.
The only other suggestion I would have is to try restoring your iPod. restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you choose no it will default to manual mode which will default "enable disk use" and from there you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Unable to Install Windows 8 on secondary Hard Disk

If the complete 25 character windows activation key is visible on the Microsoft Windows COA on your notebook, you can download an identical iso file from here and install Windows.
Download the drivers from the HP web support portal for your notebook. Put them on a usb flashdisk (thumbdrive) for ease of installation.
Use the Microsoft Windows  7 USD\DVD download tool and a 4GB usb flashdisk (thumbdrive) for the fastest and most reliable means of installing Windows.
This way you can have your laptop in a useable state while you wait for your ordered recovery disk set.

I think you need to look at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/I3#Volume_Manager and the output of man i3

  • Windows reformatted the iPod Shuffle

So I feel like an idiot - I bought my friend an iPod Shuffle for x-mas, and when we plugged it into her PC, there was a pop-up saying that the iPod needed to be formatted for Windows and that would erase all the data, etc.
I thought that was the norm for using iPods on Windows machines (I think this is the first time I've tried setting one up on a PC), so we clicked 'Ok'. After that though, the iPod didn't show up in iTunes.
Did I just reformat the entire iPod drive? So it's essentially an empty Windows-formatted drive now? If so, is there a disk image or something that I can use to restore the Shuffle?

no worries. I took it to the Apple Store and they just restored it. Best guess is that my friend needs to update iTunes for Windows.

  • HELP!!! Errors on my iPod Hard Disk

    Hello,
I have a same problem, and I am so lucky that I find a way to solve it, hope it works in your case.
You must find a Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you are not able to find one, go to an Apple shop and ask for a favor.
Last Resort - and hope it can be done by doing a Format on your PC
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • Help, my iPod hard disk has a bad sector!

Hello, I'm new to the forums, firstly to start off this topic, I live in the Middle east and as far as I can tell, it's very difficult to get any kind of customer service with apple in the middle east since it's poor.
I had purchased an 80G iPod classic (the 6th gen one) abroad in another country from where I live in Qatar. Now, my mother actually bought me this iPod as a gift for my birthday. I was delighted with it and protected it with all my heart until three months later, where I discovered that the iPod had no power left, so i connected it to the PC, synced my songs and listened to my music for the day.
While listening I noticed that the songs, paused, skipped and wouldn't play occasionally. So when I got home I synced again and I got an error.
"The iPod could not be synced because of an unknown error -60"
Now, this had happened to me a long time ago with my first iPod classic, so I changed the USB ports and tried again but it failed. I have tried everything since then, even restoring it on a Mac at the customer service department in Qatar, but I have not had a single inch of luck. I am really bummed with this problem.
I have only had this iPod for about 3 months, and I am so grateful for having it but, I can't do anything with it now, my songs don't sync and if I try to sync it on iTunes I can't access it from the My computer folder because it says the disk wasn't found.
I took it to customer service for the last time, he checked the warranty on the database of apple products and it said that the country of purchase was in the united states, now I don't live there and I didn't buy it from there so it must have been imported to the middle east. Anyways, he implied that if I wanted a new iPod I could go to the apple department in California and get it exchanged there, but it would be impossible to get it exchanged in the middle east.
I just want some help and I need to know one thing, have I been caught at a dead end? Is there nothing I can do for my iPod, except buy a new one?
If I used a mac and used Disk utility, would that fix the hard drive or bad sector?
    Help would be appreciated, thanks.
    - David.
