Windows runs, but no display

When I switch from Mac OS 10.5.6 to Windows XP Pro, Windows starts up, but there is no display. I know Windows is running because it responds to keyboard commands with appropriate Windows noises. This began when I tried to switch to Windows without ejecting my external hard drive connected via FireWire 800. Is there a magic fix, or do I need to reinstall BootCamp & (or) Windows?

Ran Bootcamp assistant & unable to reinstall Windows
Removed & reinstalled 20GB Windows partition & tried to reinstall Windows
When I execute Bootcamp Assistant “Start Windows Installation” screen and click “Start Installation”, the screen goes dark & stays dark. Finder “DEVICES” list shows 3 items: Richard’s HD, iDisk, & BOOTCAMP. I again removed the Bootcamp partition & Finder “DEVICES” list now shows 2 items: Richard’s HD, iDisk
Then, to start or restart to Leopard OS, I had to do a hard shut down & start &, when I get the “bong” hold down the “alt option” key until I get a gray screen with no Apple logo, but get my “HD” button, then click on it.
I reset the “Default Operating System” to “Mac OS X…” in System Preferences > Startup Disk which now allows computer to start up or restart to OS X without my intervention.
Please God someday let me be Windows-free. Presently only 2 obstacles left: Crosstrainer II and Streets & Trips.

My iMac won't start up, or wake from sleep.  I've tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up.  Turning it on, you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark.  Any ideas what to do?  Thanks!

    Mac doesn't boot
Can you hear the fans and hard drive and see the white boot screen? Flashing question mark? The circle just runs and nothing happens? Only black screen and nothing else? These can be very helpful to diagnose the source of the problem. [1]
Flashing question mark [2]: This is usually a sign of a failed hard drive. This indicates that boot up volume can not be found.
Black screen: This is usually a sign of a failed logic board. There is no single reason for this and this may be caused by failed GPU, screen, CPU or RAM.
Circle of death/no circle/blue screen: This is usually a sign of a hard drive failure. This may NOT be a dead hard drive, just broken permissions or something
Gray screen/Apple logo/spinning gear or globe/prohibitory sign/folder with flashing question mark [3]: This could be a sign of faulty hardware but more likely a software issue, i.e. broken permissions, failed software update, etc.
    [edit]
    What to do
First, hold down the option key (also known as the alt key) just after you've pressed the power button. This should show all the available options to boot from, so if you have Windows installed through Bootcamp or a disk in your SuperDrive, you should be able to see them along with your OS X drive/partition. Select the OS X partition with arrow keys and press enter. Startup key combinations
If that doesn't help continue doing the steps from below:
    1. SMC reset [4]. Shut down and unplug all cables including power cord for at least 30 seconds and then plug in power cord and keyboard/mouse.
    2. PRAM reset [5]. Hold down option, command, P and R while booting. Start it when you hear the sound and don't let go before it reboots.
    3. Safe boot [6]. Hold down shift while booting to boot into safe mode. If this works, open Disk Utility from Utilities and repair your permissions and verify the disk
    4. Hardware test [7]. Insert the install disk (disk 1 in Mac which shipped with OS X 10.5.4 or earlier, disk 2 if shipped with OS X 10.5.5 or newer) and hold down "D" before the grey boot screen opens. Follow on screen instructions
    5. Boot from install disk. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac. Hold C while booting. Select Disk Utility from top bar and repair permissions and verify the disk. Reboot normally and see if it works now.
    6. Boot from another Mac (Firewire target disk mode). Connect the machines with a Firewire cable. Power on your Mac and press T. Select the other Mac's hard drive. Download the current OS X combo update. Run the combo update installer and select the drive that won't boot as the destination.
    7. "Repair" OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and reinstall OS X. This should NOT erase any data, just replaces the system files which may have caused your booting problem. Now install the latest combo update for OS X and repair permissions on your drive with Disk Utility.
7.1. Install OS X into an external hard drive and then boot from it [8] and try to copy your data from the hard drive before proceeding. If you have done a backup recently, you don't have to do this.
    8. Restore OS X from Time Machine backup. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac and choose the Time Machine restore option. This step will lose any changes made since your last backup but the system and your data will be put back to exactly as it was on that date.
8.1 Reinstall OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and select Disk Utility again. Now erase the whole hard drive and install OS X again. If you had a Time Machine backup and step 7 worked you don't have to do this.

iPhone stuck on the "connect to iTunes " screen

    Hello shravan vj,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.  I recommend the following steps for Error 21:
    Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • OSX Lion running, but video display frozen.  Safe mode hangs

When  I started my Mac Pro (early 2008) this A.M. the video display froze (pin wheel stopped spinning), but OSX booted successfully (I could access shared drives from another computer on the network).  I also noted a small black rectangle at the top left of the screen.  I tried booting into safe mode, but it hung at about the 25% point as shown on the progress bar.  The pinwheel was still spinning however.  Power cycled the computer, but the results were the same.  Did all of the above several times with the same results. I booted to a known good Super Duper clone, but it also failed.  I'm guessing the video card has failed, but no way to verify this.   Anything else I can try?

Referring again to the article, only Macs that shipped with 10.7 can run the AHT from the Internet. A 2008 Mac Pro would have shipped with 10.5. If you have a 10.4 disc, it came with an older Mac and won't work. If you can't find the Applications disc that came with the MP, then you can't run the AHT.
In that case, I suggest you try booting from the recovery partition. If you can do that, run Disk Utility, repair the startup volume, and reinstall Lion. Probably this won't help, but you will then have ruled out everything except a hardware failure, which is what I think you have.

  • Access 2010 Charts - Query runs but Chart displays black screen

    Hi,
I developed a db in MS Access 2007 on my old PC and everything worked perfectly.  After trying to open it on my new PC using Access 2010 the db works except the charts display as a black area.
After a bit of playing around I can say for certain that the queries for the charts are running correctly, (and of course the colouring of the chart is correct).
I tried deleting the charts but I got an error message saying "cant find the OLE library".
As I'm relatively new to creating exe files for transferring db's I'm thinking I need to bring the ole library with the db?? but I cant seem to find it on my old pc (maybe being stupid)
Please could you tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree with this, or if there is a simple fix that I'm overlooking?
    Many thanks
    Tom.

I was having this exact same problem, then it just stopped. I am using the nouveau driver and I have a tnt2 card.
IIRC, I was having an unrelated problem with xorg or udev or something was having problems detecting my monitor, it claimed I had two monitors connected, I wrote an xorg.conf file and that fixed the problem. IDK if its is related or not because I don't recall exactly when things started working when I would switch ttys.
Try using the nouveau driver and see if it does the same thing, it has a kernel module so it might make difference,

  • Imac G5, hdd runs but no display and no fans

What might be the problem if I get no display at all and no fans running on an imac G5probably around a 2005 model. I can hear the harddrive running.

So I waited a couple of hours with the Macbook Air unplugged.  After two hours still noticed the Apple logo was "on" and the bottom of the laptop was warm.  Pushed the power button a couple of times and the machine turned off.  I pressed the power button again and heard the startup chime.  I did this while holding down Option-Command-"R"-'P" (no easy task).  The screen came on, very fuzzy at first but the cleared up.  Wanted to know if I wanted to reinstall the OS, restore a backup or just restart.  I took the simplest approach and restarted.  The system rebooted fine.  The display is back to where it was before.  Needless to say, I immediately backed everything up to iCloud just in case this happens again.
Anyone have any suggestions or advice?  Thanks, Papajohn-Philly

  • [SOLVED]Systemd: noftify-send running but not displaying

    Hello,
I'm trying to get systemd to run a command that pops a notification on screen for me to get up and move around a bit (for my health). The script works if called in the command line and seems to be running fine in systemd. No notification is being displayed, however:
    script:
    #!/bin/bash
notify-send "Get up and move around!" "You've been sitting in one place for too long." --icon=dialog-information
Service is called move.service. Here is output of systemctl status move.service.
    ● move.service - Reminds you to move.
    Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/move.service; enabled)
Active: inactive (dead) since Sat 2014-11-29 09:39:07 EST; 21s ago

    Main PID: 3797 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
If I read this correctly, it executed as PID 3797 and finished 21 seconds ago (hence the dead state in active).
    Here it is while running

    Hello
I would not use systemd to do that.
Just write a script and have it running in background when you start your graphical session:
    #!/bin/bash
    while true; do
notify-send "Get up and move around!" "You've been sitting in one place for too long." --icon=dialog-information
    sleep 7200
    done
You can also look at this thread for other less KISS ways.

  • MBP 2013 Sleeping, fans running, but no display

    Hi.
I have this reocurring problem with my MBP late 2013 (the £1.8k model).
Sometimes when I put the machine to sleep it will not wake but the fans will be running and the only way to recover from this state is to reset the machine using power+alt or cmd.
The most recent event happened when I put the machine to sleep by closing the screen, I then plugged it in to charge overnight and when I went to use the machine today at 2.55PM it was very warm. I have Power Nap enabled - now going to disable this because I think it might be the cause of the issue.
    Thank you.
    Pete.

    Hello,
At this point I think your best bet is to take it in for servicing at the local service center.
As for your data, I think odds are that it is still in-tact. The type of failure you describe sounds more like a failed logic-board or possibly the power supply (improper voltage / low-voltage).
Most likely it's a failed logic-board. But, the power supply can cause these symptoms as well.
Neither would mean that your hard drive is bad. It's possible that it is, but it's not an automatic definite.
If it were only the hard drive that failed, then you'd get the grey Apple screen with a flashing question-mark.
So, what I would do, is request them to fix the computer. But, I would put a stipulation on it that requires them to call you if they are going to re-format or replace the hard drive.
This way you'll know in advance if they are going to erase your data. You could then decide whether to pay them to archive it onto another media or back it up for you, or just let it go.
Explain to them that you have information you are concerned about saving. And, request them to at least let you know if their repair process is going to require them to do anything that might erase the hard drive.
I think that's about the best you can do at this point.
    I hope this helps.

  • Firefox is not opening and saying " firefox is alredy running but not responding ,to open a new window you must close the existing fireox process" even though there is no other window open

this has been happening since i updated i have windows 7 but firefox beta used to work just 3 days ago i had mcafee site advisor but i deleted it its not working every time i click on the icon it displays the above message

I discovered that when the "Firefox is already running . . . ." message pops up I can fix it by doing the following [note: I get the same message for the Thunderbird e-mail program too] : 1. I open 'TASK MANAGER" and click on the "Processes" tab. 2. Next I scroll down until I see Firefox.exe *32 in the leftmost column (or Thunderbird. exe *32 if the message came up there), highlight that line by clicking on it and then click on the "end process" button on the right side on the bottom. 4. A pop-up window will come up but ignore its message and click on the "end process" button in the pop-up window. The program should then start the next time you click on the icon..
While that saves the need to restart your PC to fix the problem, I have yet to find any information as to the reasons for those two processes to show up in the first place. I'm running the 64 bit Win 7 Professional and do not know if that has something to do with those two processes running from time to time or not. The message comes up often but not all the time and I haven't been able to pinpoint any action on my part where the message comes up if I do '''X '''or the message never comes up when I do '''Y''' before closing Firefox or Thunderbird.

  • Firefox process running, but no window?

Firefox crashed while I was away from my
computer (Windows XP, FF 7.0.1). Re-starting
caused the firefox.exe process to appear in the
task manager, along with 7 plugin-container.exe
processes, but no Firefox window appeared.
Re-booting and re-starting FF gave the same
result. Then, after several minutes, while
reporting this bug via IE, suddenly the FF
window appeared, and restored the tabs that had

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.
