Windows search without indexing

Is it possible to use windows search as a regular search tool; so without the indexing part? I tried some non microsoft tools, i read this article
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Improve-Windows-searches-using-the-index-frequently-asked-questions and
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744686(WS.10).aspx, but they still index the files. That means that you wont be able to find youre files when they are not indexed. Correct
me when i am wrong.
So my question; how can i find my files when they are not yet indexed(just like the old search companion did)

Rob.Ford's response (currently marked as an answer) is not the answer.
The answer is, Windows Explorer and the Search service will never find things you are looking for unless you know in advance that you want them to be found. There is however a few commands that you can use to find things in a Windows file system. The answer
to this question is then most properly in the following forum response:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/598a6a0f-05ff-4d9d-ace2-6e7f02bc081b
The question is entitled "How to Find or Search for files, folders, or contents of files, WITHOUT using an Index (Windows Search Service NOT installed)?"

  • Prevent Windows Search from indexing PST contents in Outlook

Running Windows 8.1 with Windows Search, and Office 2013 with more that 20GB in more than 10 PSTs and OSTs, searching becomes very slow after indexing everything. Reindexing has no change. If I exclude Outlook it's very fast.
There is an option in Outlook search ribbon -> Search Tools -> Locations to search. I removed most of the PSTs (accounting for 75% of the contents), but still ALL PSTs and OSTs get indexed (although they won't be searched).
This makes using Windows Search nearly impossible (e.g. searching using the charm thing takes 30 seconds).
How can I have Windows Search index ONLY the PSTs and OSTs that I specifically want?
Is there any configuration, registry stuff or programatic workaround to exclude from indexing (not searching)?
    Thank you.
    Andy.PT

    Hi,
Still, as mentioned above, I don't have such a method to choose which to be included in Indexing and which to be excluded.
The only thing that I find which is close to your request is this:
If the method above isn't helpful in your scenario(as you mentioned), you can try some 3rd-party tools/add-ins to realize a new search function which may meet your request.

  • Windows Search - Index - Object not found 0x80041201

    Hi folks,
I am specifying the following group policy for windows search:
This path exists on the local PC.
However, the Event log is returning this error:
Any ideas what is wrong? The machine restarted fine

    Hi Alex,
Based on your observation, I checked again the local folder.
The folder had been created locally on the C drive. However, if you look at this screenshot below, you will see something strange:
Explorer sees "StartMenu" but DOS prompt sees "Start Menu". Must have been a rename on the folder at some point and it didnt succeed somehow - bizarre.
Anyway - I created another folder "StartMenuFinal" and included it in it works now, I can see the location in indexed locations like you can:
so must be some sort of renaming issue on the original folder, frustrating.
thanks for the time to help me get to the bottom of this.

  • How to search a USB-attached NTFS drive *without* indexing?

I have an NTFS backup drive from an old Windows XP system attached to an iMac running Mountain Lion.
I would like to search for something on it.
I do *not* want to write to it, nor do I need it indexed.
How can I find something on this drive?

Is some special configuration needed to search non-indexed volumes?
I can put anything I want in for search criteria in Finder's "File - FInd" dialog, and nothing is found on either my directly attached USB drive or on an SMB share mounted read-only on the network.  It doesn't matter whether I wait 2 minutes or 2 hours.  For example, the root directory of my USB drive contains numerous files of the form Bkup*.log, but no results appear in the search window for either "Bkup" or "log", nor do any appear if I agree to the automatic conversion of "log" into a "Kind2.
What is worse, there is not even any visible acknowledgement of my input: no indication that a search was completed or even started.
Since the default search location is "This Mac", the search window will even continue to show search result from a previous search (if there are any) after I have changed the scope to my USB (or network) drive and changed the search criteria.

    Hi,
I did the test and could install the Windows Search Service without problem.
Which role did you installed on the terminal server?
Did you try to install it on another windows server?

  • Searching through index

    Hello,
In a PDF JavaScript I am using "search.query(cSearchTxt, "Index", cIdxPath)" to do the search using index with the option of "All Words", "Any Word" and "Exact Pharase". I do not need the popup window to be opened and showing me file names and number of hits, I want to copy the file names that would have been displayed on the pop up window to be copied to a new folder...
I am wiling to pay if somebody develops that script to me or show me an example.
    Regards,
    Jeff P.

I want that to be done without human intervention and it is not only one text string that I search for at this time, there are multiple text string... I have the action script that I only start, it runs by itself but it takes a while to finish...

  • Windows Search on TS/Citrix

    Hi,
I have a random issue with file browsing performance from Citrix servers (2008 R2) to DFS-R file shares. Sometimes it's lags a bit and is slower than usual to respond. We managed to chase this down to when it's sluggish the 'SearchIndexer.exe' service is
    consuming abnormal amounts of CPU.
Because of this, I have been focussing on Windows Search on the Citrix servers and trying to make sure it's setup properly. There seems to be a division out there as to weather to even have it enabled on Citrix/TS servers at all, seeing as it's already enabled
I'm not keen on disabling it without knowing the full user impact.
I've been trying to find what is actually being indexed, we use Outlook in online mode, so it shouldn't be indexing mail but am having trouble understanding what is (and should) be indexed. Below are the results of 'Indexing' from the Control Panel (each
blanked item has a user name):
    This seems strange to me...
    1. Why is one user profile being indexed? And in fact that user is not logged into this server so their profile is not currently on that server.
    2. Should IE history be indexed? If so, why is it only showing for some users?
    3. The fact that C:\System is not ticked, does this imply that nothing else on the system is indexed?
    4. Again, why are only a few Outlook accounts being indexed, and again they are users not currently logged in. Does this relate to indexing of PST files which brings me to an interesting error in the event log:
The content source <mapi://{S-1-5-21-658763581-1626722119-1451837230-6170}/> cannot be accessed.
    Context:  Application, SystemIndex Catalog
    Details:
The filtering process has been terminated  (HRESULT : 0x80040db4) (0x80040db4)
Does this mean that mapi is being indexed? This seems to happen for a short time in the morning (7:30am - 8:30am), likely when users are logging on?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    David Robertson

    Hi David,
As we cannot confirm the exact cause of the multiple indexed items, a quick way is to reset indexing and monitor if any new items are added for analysis.
I think most of the indexed items are added by the function "remote index". Clients could access indexed folders on server side. See:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772446(v=ws.10).aspx
And In Windows Search 4.0, shared folders will be automatically indexed.  - If you would like to disable it, you can set the policy to prevent auto indexing.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732491(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_PreventAutomaticallyAddingSharedFolders
For "Internet Explorer" in indexing, you can disable it as well. Under Indexing Options, click Modify, then uncheck the checkbox "Internet Explorer history".

  • Windows Search Service Crashes on Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi,
I'm running Windows Search service on a Windows Server 2012 R2 (24GB RAM, 8-core proc). The index catalog has a little over 2 million items (files and folders indexed).
Every once in a while this service crashes, and either remains in limbo or automatically recovers and restarts the index from zero. I'm trying to find out information about what may be causing the crashes and about how to prevent them. Unfortunately, I don't
seem to be able to find much about the Windows Search service on Windows Server 2012 R2. So anyone who may have input on this, please chip in.
    Additional info:
    - As mentioned above, the server OS is Windows Server 2012 R2. This is a physical server with 24GB RAM, 8-core proc and over 2TB of storage.
    - This server acts as a DC and as a File Server. In addition to this and Windows Search service, there are no other major services running here
    - Symantec Endpoing protection is installed and running on this server, but I've made sure to exclude the Window Search database from SEP
Here are some of the errors that are generated when the issue happens:
The error below may show up in the event logs. If it shows up more than once, the indexing service has likely crashed and won't recover.

the service stop command failed. The indexing service seems to have picked up where it was (~300K items) and continued indexing.

    Thanks for your post.
To resolve this problem, use the Registry Editor to change the default timeout value for all services.

  • Satellite Pro A300 - I get the "Windows search" if I left click any folder

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro A300 and downgraded it to Windows XP SP3.
When I left-click any folder icon on my hard drive I get the 'Windows Search' window displayed instead of opening the folder. When I right-click any folder icon, the first item in the menu (bolded) is 'Search'.
How can I change the order of these menu items so as 'Open' is the first item?
Can I remove (Control Panel-Add or Remove Programs) the Windows Search facility without affecting any software I have loaded?
Is having the Windows Search facility installed the likely cause of my problem?
    Thanks,
    Murray

Have just solved my own problem:
    1. The order of items in the shortcut menu for Folders can be changed by updating the actions for specified file types in the Folder Options Menu. Select +Folder Options+ from the +Tools+ menu of any folder, select +File Types+ and scroll down to *Folder*. Click *Advanced* then click *New* and add *Open* with *Explorer* as the program to use. Click *OK* and *Close* and bingo! Appears the order of the short-cut menu in XP is Open before search, but in XP Pro is Search followed by Open/Explore.
    2. The Windows Search utility can be safely removed despite the warning issued - the Microsoft website indicates the warning is simply a generic warning and it is highly unlikely that removal will affect any software installed since the Search utility was loaded.
    3. The Windows Search utility was NOT the cause of this problem.
Trust this might save others the hours of research I had to do to find this solution ...

  • Office 2010 Outlook Search and Indexing not working

    Hello,
I'm hoping someone may be of assistance as this has been plaguing my outlook for some time now.
    Problem:
When attempting to search for any emails via the search bar, it appears as if it is attempting to search, but I receive no results.
    Windows 7 x64 Service Pack 1
    Office 2010 Service Pack 2
    Connected to Office 365 Exchange
In services Windows Search service is not running, though Automatic (Delayed Start is selected), I attempted starting the service but it returned with an error saying it started and then stopped.
In Outlook options > Search > Indexing Options > the service is shown as "Indexing is not Running" and the list of indexed folders is empty. Everything else is grayed
out except "Advance Tab" which only has one button available called "Rebuild", everything else is grayed out.
I am aware this question was asked a few years back but the linked articles referenced are no longer working.
Though I seem to be having a similar problem and any assistance and new suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
Please check if you can search mailbox in OWA. If OWA works well, the issue is related Outlook.
If it is the same issue in OWA, in Exchange 2013, you can use the following command to check the content index state of the mailbox database where this user is.
    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus | fl name, contentindex*
If the content index status is Failed, please try to reseed the search catalog. After that, please rebuild the index in Outlook to check the result.
If you are using Office 365, I recommend you ask this question in Office 365 forum which is staffed by more experts specializing in this kind of this problem. You might get a better answer there.

  • Using Windows Search for multiple, multi-page PDFs

I am scanning documents into a Windows folder (documents have been OCR'ed).  An employee verifies that each document has a specific number that OCR picked up, if OCR did not, the user will use the 'Add or edit text box' under tools in Adobe Acrobat Professional XI to add the correct number.  Multiple scans are handled this way and merged together to create documents that may be up to 2300 pages long (so far).  Within that same Windows folder, there are other files with similarly handled information and numerous pages.
My problem is, if I am looking for a specific number that is within one of the PDF files within the Windows folder - I can find it if I open the file that contains the number and do a search.  However, even though we are using a Windows index to be able to search from the Windows Search, the Windows Search will not always be able to find one of the indexed numbers.  Does anyone know if there is a maximum size or number of pages a PDF can be for the Windows Search to be able to be used?  Perhaps this is a question I should ask of Windows.  I am not sure if I am doing something wrong with the PDFs or if the Windex index isn't working.  Thoughts?

    Something that may help -
With a multi-page PDF open in Acrobat Pro; select Document > Extract Pages
In the Extract Pages dialog you can select "Extract Pages As Separate Files".
This will provide you with a PDF file for each page of the source PDF file.
    Additional options are also possible.
In a thread at AUC, Thom Parker identifies these.
