Windows sees 4G iPod Nano, iTunes only wants to "Restore" it

My problem is a variation on what appears to be a constant theme around here. Windows XP will recognize my 4G iPod Nano (16GB). It even gives it a drive letter. However, iTunes will only display the Software Version and Serial Number on the DEVICES Summary tab page. In the Version section of the page I can click the Restore button, but the restore will fail approximately half way through with the following, and I discovered vague, error:
+The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1429).+
I've spent about 6 hours researching and troubleshooting this now, completing all the steps here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1372 and here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1493. I've also uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes and the USB drivers a bunch. Still no joy.
I'm open to suggestions.

Could you confirm your Presario's *model number* for me please? Certainly. Using HP's numerical identifiers:

  • Windows sees my iPod but iTunes doesn't (USB 2.0)

I had this problem when I got my iPod a few days ago, then when I got iTunes to see my iPod it took AGES to upload songs, and when I reconnected my iPod, iTunes said it needed to reformat it.
My PC at work speaks to my iPod just fine through it's USB ports, but is a new, high end PC with top spec components, whereas my home PC is a couple of years old, though fairly high spec though it's components may not be as good.
The conclusion I drew from that is that some older USB 2.0 ports just can't handle the capacity of information that iTunes and iPod require in order to speak to each other.
I noticed today that my PC had a Firewire port in it's soundcard at the back (yours may do too, take a look) so I went to HMV and bought a 3rd party iPod Firewire cable for £10. Now my home PC and my iPod are the best of friends, and I'm a happy bunny (which I wasn't earlier in the week).
If you are having similar problems, there is probably nothing wrong with your software or your iPod (poor thing!), its almost certainly that your USB ports just aren't up to scratch (despite the claims of Apple).
If your soundcard doesn't have a Firewire port, a PCI Firewire card will cost you about £40, unless you take the time to look around and get one a bit cheaper. This will be the answer to your prayers.
Good luck, and I hope this info will spare you some messing about.

Make sure you have the most recent version of itunes. And if you do have the most recent version of itunes. Check to make sure your ipod software is up to date. If either or is out of date it will cause itunes not to sync with the ipod.
Itunes versions should be - 5.0.1
    - you can find the version by going to help and then about itunes. In the strolling box you should see version .....
Ipod software version should be 1.2
    - you can check this on the ipod by going to setting and then about. scroll down and you should see the version 1.2

  • Windows sees my iPod, but iTunes doesn't

I recently updated my iPod which was previously working fine. It goes through the whole update process with no problem. When that is done, I tried to connect it to my PC, but get the error message that iTunes cannot read the contents of my iPod and that it needs to be restored to the factory settings.
I am currently backing up my iPod and then am going to restore it, but my question is this: is there any way to get this update to actually work? It seems like there are many posts complaining about the most recent update. Did Apple just issue an update without doing any testing at all? An update is supposed to fix problems, not cause thousands more....

So, now that I've backed up all my songs, I can't restore my iPod. I tricked iTunes into letting me click on the restore button, but then there is an error and the program shuts down.
    itunes.exe version 7.0.0.70, offset 0014ff5a
    Code: 0xc000005
Thanks Apple, your update had rendered my iPod useless.

iTunes does not support drag and drop for iOS devices.
Connect either the iPod or iPad to your computer, launch iTunes.
Select the iPod (iPad) under Devices left side of the iTunes window in the source list.
    Select Books from the menu.
Then click the Sync button bottom right side of the iTunes window.
You can select All Books or Selected Books.

  • Windows 8.1: Ipod Nano Found. Itunes Can't Talk To It

I just connected a brand new Ipod Nano to my brand new Windows 8.1 machine. Windows finds the Ipod. Itunes recognizes the Ipod but it can't progress about connectivity. I disconnect the cable from the USB slot then reconnect. Same error message.

Hi Kathy and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You see this message because of iTunes' incompatibility with XP's Fast User Switching feature. If you disable it, the problem should go away.
Go to Start/Control Panel/User Accounts then 'Change the way users log on and off' and remove the checkmark from Fast User Switching.

how can i add videos, movies and tv shows episodes to my ipod nano?I want to know whether i can directly add them through my pc or not without downloading them from i tunes store?

Yes, you can add your own videos to iTunes, then sync them to your nano, subject to supported max resolution limit and file type.  The specs for the 7th gen nano says (I don't know which nano model you have), Video Format Support
"H.264 video: 720 by 576 pixels, 30 frames per second; Baseline, Main, and High-Profile level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 256 Kbps; 48kHz; stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 Mbps, 720 by 576 pixels, 30 frames per second; Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 256 Kbps; 48kHz; stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats"
    http://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/specs.html
(earlier nanos have lower max resolution limits)
So, "HD" video is too high resolution, so iTunes will not sync such videos to the iPod (although they play in iTunes).  If you are asking how to set up iTunes to sync videos in general (regardless of source), please post back.

Can I syncronize my iPod without loosing all its data?. How about syncronizing it to my iPhone?

Have you tried the steps listed here?

Hi, I don't know which Apple ID I used to register my Ipod Nano. I had to restore my Computer and now I can't connect my iPod to iTunes again. I have my serial number and ECID. I'm using Windows, BTW, sorry!

Search your email for the word Logic (and set the search to All) and you should find the receipt (so long as you didn't delete it)
Other than that.. simply contact Apple directly and ask.. Make sure you have your transaction details ready for them as they will need it...

  • 2GB ipod nano will only allow 40 songs and not 500.

My little sisters ipod nano will only allow forty smoething songs to be downloaded on it, but isn't 2GB supposed to get around 500? There is nothing else on it except music so there isn't anything else taking up memory space. And yes I have restored it numerous times. Please help!

Make sure that the Music files are compressed formats if you want to get the m ost out of the cpacity of your iPod. When the iPod is "advertised" as "500 songs" or what have you, it is based on circumstance that the song is an AAC format (.m4a) and I think an average of 4minutes long.
AAC is as small as you can get. Make sure the tracks are in that format, if they are already, then the tracks must be quite long.

I partitioned a small drive for a windows program, and now the computer only wants to boot to Windows.  How do I get back to Mac so I can have a choice of drives?

That doesn't sound good. It sounds like the power outage might have corrupted the partition for OS X. I would suggest booting from the Install DVD that came with your Mac while holding down the C key. Once you have selected the language start up Disk Utility from the pull down menu and repair the disk. Once you have done that then repair permissions also.

  • How can I turn off the volume limitor on my ipod nano?  I want to play it with a docking station, it is no where near as loud as an old 4GB ipod!

Hello, please can you tell me how to turn off the volume limiotr on my ipod nano?  I want to play it on a docking station and it just isn't as loud as I want it to be.  An old ipod is much louder.

I tend to select things from left to right and every time I am moving in a downward right diagonal motion during lasso selection I am missing a clear view and I am tending to have a more sloppy selection.  All this does is slow me down since I need to go back and hit those areas again.  The big arrowhead just get's in the way.  The original lasso tool with the thin line and small active point at it's lower left was far better for me.
I don't like turning the cursors to precise because I like to see the active tool icon where my cursor is and as the icon changes as I hold modifier keys down.  If I am forced to get comfortable with using pricise cursors I guess I will, but man, I've never had to do this in my 15 years of photoshop use...
I would absolutely LOVE to find a way to get the old lasso icon -- without the arrowhead above it.
Is there any chance this option could be inlcuded in cursor preferences?  I'd give much thanks, Adobe.

  • I just purchased an iPod Nano (Red) and want to connect to my truck's speakers.  There is no built-in direct port.  What is the best product to buy to make that connection?

I just purchased an iPod Nano (Red) and want to connect to my truck's speakers.  There is no built-in port to connect.  What is the best product to purchase in order to make a connection?  Thx, Robert

Your truck's audio system may not have a specialized docking port for iPods, or a USB port, but does it have a standard "auxiliary" audio input port?  It would look like headphones jack on the iPod.  If so, you can use a cable like this
    http://www.amazon.com/Monster-iCable-Player-Auxiliary-Input/dp/B002AR5XIK
to connect your iPod's output to the car's audio.
Otherwise, if your audio system is old enough to have a casette tape player, you can get a device that looks casette tape with a cable coming out of it, and play your iPod through the casette tape player.  The other way is to get a device for the iPod that sends the audio, through a low-power radio transmitter, to your car's radio (at a frequency that is normally not used by local radio).  From my experience, neither of those methods work well, in terms of maintaining full audio quality.

My first generation iPod nano is stuck in a restore loop. iTunes (Windows, XP)is up-to-date and the restoration goes ahead smoothly without error messages until it finishes; then the computer again says the device is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. It also doesn't cycle on or off using the dial while in this loop. Any ideas?
