Windows sees iPod but iTunes doesn't ALSO Windows cannot locate driver

Got my Nano (2d gen) a few days ago and have been stumped since I can't use it. Here's a few details. I'm running Windows 2000 with SP4. In trying to sync I have used both my laptop's USB 1.1 port but also a USB 2.0 card with and without additional power (which can sometimes cause problems). I have tried the 5 R's to no avail.
Here's what's happened so far. Initially when I connected the Nano Windows would look for the appropriate driver. After a minute or so, the computer would lock up and reboot. This happened 5 or 7 times. Very frustrating.
I then tried the 5 R's and started doing some research on my own. I think part of the problem might have been due to Windriver, which I believe controls USB drivers. I messed around with that and eventually got to the point where when I plugged in the Nano, Windows would search for the correct iPod driver. After a minute or so, a window would pop up reporting that Windows couldn't find the driver and did I want to disable this device or ignore the update.
Hey, at least the computer wasn't rebooting.
The strange this is that if I click on the System Tray, under the Unplug/Eject Hardware icon it shows that there is an iPod connected and the Nano will charge. And yet, iTunes doesn't report being connected.
I have searched and searched this forum and the web but to no avail. Are there smarter minds out there that can help me with this problem?
IBM T20 Windows 2000 Nano 2d gen with iTunes 7.02

I went through the steps in the document a day or so ago but it didn't help. I will try one more time, paying close attention to the details.
On a different note, just after I posted my question I attached my Nano and let it look for the appropriate driver. However, this time I pointed it to the WINNT\Systems32\drivers directory and my computer locked up and rebooted.
So I'm thinking there's an underlying problem and I'm just don't want to think about doing a re-install or re-format of my HDD.
There is one thing I can report. I was able to sync on my office computer so the problem's not the Nano.
Will let you know if anything changes. Thanks for the quick response.

  • Help, Windows recognizes ipod but itunes doesn't

ive tried everything that ive seen listed but nothing seems to work. My issue is that Windows recognizes ipod but itunes doesn't. I would really apprecaite it if someone could help me with this issue.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this is still happening. I had the same problem until this newest version of itunes. The thing that always worked for me earlier was the re-starting of the ipod service. I have nothing else.
    Good luck

  • My computer recognizes my iPod but iTunes doesn't. How do I fix it?

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar.  Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears.

  • Windows sees my iPod but iTunes doesn't (USB 2.0)

I had this problem when I got my iPod a few days ago, then when I got iTunes to see my iPod it took AGES to upload songs, and when I reconnected my iPod, iTunes said it needed to reformat it.
My PC at work speaks to my iPod just fine through it's USB ports, but is a new, high end PC with top spec components, whereas my home PC is a couple of years old, though fairly high spec though it's components may not be as good.
The conclusion I drew from that is that some older USB 2.0 ports just can't handle the capacity of information that iTunes and iPod require in order to speak to each other.
I noticed today that my PC had a Firewire port in it's soundcard at the back (yours may do too, take a look) so I went to HMV and bought a 3rd party iPod Firewire cable for £10. Now my home PC and my iPod are the best of friends, and I'm a happy bunny (which I wasn't earlier in the week).
If you are having similar problems, there is probably nothing wrong with your software or your iPod (poor thing!), its almost certainly that your USB ports just aren't up to scratch (despite the claims of Apple).
If your soundcard doesn't have a Firewire port, a PCI Firewire card will cost you about £40, unless you take the time to look around and get one a bit cheaper. This will be the answer to your prayers.
Good luck, and I hope this info will spare you some messing about.

Make sure you have the most recent version of itunes. And if you do have the most recent version of itunes. Check to make sure your ipod software is up to date. If either or is out of date it will cause itunes not to sync with the ipod.
Itunes versions should be - 5.0.1
    - you can find the version by going to help and then about itunes. In the strolling box you should see version .....
Ipod software version should be 1.2
    - you can check this on the ipod by going to setting and then about. scroll down and you should see the version 1.2

  • Windows recognizes iPod but iTunes doesn't

Okay, so, on my computer, I open up iTunes and it loads up and runs fine. However, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes freezes up and doesn't let me do anything. My iPod will charge but it won't sync. When I do plug it in, an explored window opens up saying that I have connected a camera and it gives me options of what I want to do. When I unplug my iPod, iTunes is still frozen up, and the process is not responding. Does anybody know how to fox my problem?

  • Computer finds iPod but iTunes doesn't

I would appreciate any help. I have tried everything to get iTunes to find the iPod. I have a Dell E521 and I have tried almost everything.
I removed iTunes and re-installed it (several times) I believe I removed all traces of iTunes before re-installing.
I changed the drive from (j) which was the default to (x)
I tried to change the start-up
I removed some KEY files that I heard to try.
I don't know what else to try.
I have two Nano's and neither work so I assume it is a computer problem.
The computer finds the Nano but thinks it is a hard drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter: Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management. Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”. Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused. Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” (or something similar).
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Also try these hints (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.

  • Yet more problems!  Now the computer recognises ipod, but itunes doesn't

I used my ipod with my old laptop, but now I want to use it on my new one.
Firstly the ipod wouldn't sync, and after literally hours of messing, itunes kept saying "error: cannot sync". I still haven't resolved that issue.
But now itunes doesn't recognise the ipod at all, despite the computer recognising it!!!!
All the help seems to be for XP, but I have vista.
Why do the same problems happen over and over and over? I hate my ipod, and wished I had never bought one.
Anyone, please help before I put a stiletto heel through it.

  • Computer sees iPod, but iTunes does not!

Even the Genius Bar guy couldn't fix this:
    - Everything used to work fine with my 5G iPod and Lenovo T61 laptop w/XP
-Suddenly, iPod won't sync with computer anymore
    - Did all the "5R" stuff, so now I have an iPod with nothing on it, but iTunes still won't see it.
    - I know the COMPUTER and OS are seeing it, since the iPod shows up in the Device Manager, and all the Windows stuff shows the iPod is attached
    - Sometimes I get the "Restore" pop-up, but no more.
    - Deleted and re-installed a fresh copy of iTunes
    - If I connect the iPod to another computer it syncs, but NOT "it's own" laptop.
HELP! This thing is useless and I am out of options that, again, even the Genuis Bar couldn't help.
    ANY suggestions, anyone?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !
"tnd", good idea, but iPod hardware wasn't in the "software" area you pointed to. However, it got things in the right direction. Thanks.
Katrina: Worked like a charm. In retrospect, it's obvious, but it didn't occur to me (or, the Genius Bar guy) to look at the other hard drive letters. I'm using a laptop that connects during the week to it's "home base" corporate network when I'm in the office. There are "h", "l" and "n" drives there, and even when the laptop is undocked and running outside the office, I guess those drives are still in there as assigned, even though not connected. Checked as you suggested, and sure enough, the iPod showed as "h", and that must have been the problem. Reassigned it to "P" for "pod" since I'll remember that in case the IT guys at work add more drives to my node. Clearly, a "DOH!".
THANKS, my faith in Apple is restored -- I was ready to throw this thing through the window!

  • Windows sees my iPod, but iTunes doesn't

I recently updated my iPod which was previously working fine. It goes through the whole update process with no problem. When that is done, I tried to connect it to my PC, but get the error message that iTunes cannot read the contents of my iPod and that it needs to be restored to the factory settings.
I am currently backing up my iPod and then am going to restore it, but my question is this: is there any way to get this update to actually work? It seems like there are many posts complaining about the most recent update. Did Apple just issue an update without doing any testing at all? An update is supposed to fix problems, not cause thousands more....

So, now that I've backed up all my songs, I can't restore my iPod. I tricked iTunes into letting me click on the restore button, but then there is an error and the program shuts down.
    itunes.exe version 7.0.0.70, offset 0014ff5a
    Code: 0xc000005
Thanks Apple, your update had rendered my iPod useless.

  • TS1363 I have run as many troubleshooting steps on Windows sees iPod but iTunes doesnt and it still wont help.  Help!

I followed as many steps in this troubleshooting step as I could.  I ran into some problems that my caveman brain does not understand and now I need some help.  Here are some bumps in the road:
When I tried to verify the correct driver was installed (step 5), I ran into a problem when I chose the inf file:  "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware"  Waah!   I tried to make sure I was updating the driver for the right device, because I watched verrrry  closely what changed in Device manager (Win XP SP3) when I disconnected and connected.
I ran into another problem when I tried to run msconfig.
Is there anyone out there who can help me get iTunes to recognize the fact that my good old shuffle is connected???
Also, I have two shuffles and both are being given the cold shoulder by iTunes.  BTW I did the complete uninstall and reinstall per the instructions...twice (I thought I had forgotten a step)

So is there any entry for these iPod Shuffles in Device Manager when you have them connected to your Windows XP Machine?
