Windows Server 2008 AD & DNS issue

Hi Guys,
I have an Server 2008 ADDS enviroment with this DC-s:
"List of domain controllers with accounts in the domain:
WTEHU001 (powered off)
WTEHU003 (powered off)
ZEUS
MINERVA
GYAL-DC1
The command completed successfully."
When I change from google dns (8.8.8.8) to local DNS address (127.0.0.1) on DNS entries of NIC of Server, I get error messages:
"The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical
DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller"
DNS service is unavailable on this situation.
With google DNS on server's NIC, local DNS service is available and nslookup is working on local machines:
"nslookup zeus
Kiszolgáló:  zeus.wtehu.local
Address:  10.31.7.6
Név:     zeus.wtehu.local"
But, I get this error message with "dcdiag /test:dns"

Public DNS servers should not be used in IP settings of DCs. You need to configure them as forwarders instead. Also, I would recommend using your ISP DNS servers instead of Google ones.
For the recommendation of IP settings to be used on DCs, please refer to what is written in this Wiki article: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18513.active-directory-replication-issues-basic-troubleshooting-steps-single-ad-domain-in-a-single-ad-forest.aspx

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS service issue with BitLocker

I recently installed BitLocker on a Windows Server 2008 Platform. I did not encrypt the boot partition because the server hardware BIOS did not have the necessary requirements to encrypt the system drive.
The Server roles are ADSM, DC and File Server. For DC operation I am also running the DNS service.
When I installed the DNS role I was prompted to install the Log files on a different volume than the OS. I did this, but unfortunately, it was the same volume that was encrypted.
Since I could not encrypt the system disk, the encrypted volume must be unlocked via password in order to mount. Here in lise my problem.
When I do a full reboot of the server, I get to the point in the boot process where my mouse is visible and operational (this would be just before the Windows OS logo displays, I believe), then the server reboots. On the next boot up I am given the diagonstics
and recovery dialog because the OS failed to boot.
I believe the failure is the DNS service trying to launch, but because the log files are on the encrypted drive and it has not been unlocked, the system sees this as a security problem and reboots
Does this make sense? If it does, is there a way to boot 2008 R2 with the DNS service disabled, say with the original install disk in recovery mode?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this system cannot be booted in its current state.
    Peter C. Hesse Network/Systems Administrator

    Hi,
I believe you mean the Active Directory Logs not the DNS logs, because these are necessary to startup a domain controller, because the AD database depends on these logs.
So if you have AD logs on a different partition and that is encrypted with Bitlocker you could probably automatically unlock it.
So you did not encrypt OS partition because the server does not have a TPM fully compliant chip ?
    manage-bde /?
    manage-bde -autounlock -enable Driveletter:
But you have to be able to boot server normal mode I am not sure if the command can be used in DSRM mode.

  • Drivers for Windows Server 2008 and HDD issues

Recently I have had the hard drive with my OS fail. After replacing the hard drive and reinstalling windows server 2008 I seem to have run into a few issues with drivers.  After insalling Windows, I had 3 items in my device manager that did not install properly. I was able to get the driver for the LAN port to work but I have not gotten the driver for "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and "SM Bus Controller". After a little research, I believe the video card is a Radeon HD4350. With that information I still have been unable toinstlal the correct drivers for either of these items. I've tried several drivers listed on the drivers support page on HP's website but all fo them return the same error about not finding the correct Operating System. The link to the driver I used originally on my previous installation seems to not be valid any longer.
Also I can't seem to access the two additoinal hard drives (connected by sata). They were used with the previous installation of windows with no issues. They appear in the device manager but do not show up under My Computer. A removeable drive does show up that I'm not sure what it is. Previously I had used software to mirror one of the drives onto the other as to prevent losing data if a drive would fail. Is one of the above drives causing the issue with not being able to access the drives or did the software used before cause the problem?
Any help on these issues is greatly appreciated.
    This question was solved.

    OK.
I can't help you with the drives then.  That is out of my realm of knowledge.  If they are marked healthy and active in the disk management utility, then that is all I know that they should be indicated.
    As for the graphics driver...
Download and install this free file utility.
    http://www.7-zip.org/
After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file and select 7-zip from the list of options.
Select 7-zip to Extract to: and let it extract the file into a folder.  I let it extract to the file name of the folder.
Then just follow the rest of my instructions to install the driver.
Of course you will first browse to where 7-zip has extracted the folder to, and proceed from there.

  • Windows Server 2008 - Advanced Sharing Issues

    Hello,
I maintain a small Windows server for a lab on a college campus, and we're currently experiencing some errors when sharing a folder called "students". We're using advanced permissions to share the folder under the network shared name "students".
It worked for months, but now students can no longer access the folder. The permissions are correct, and upon making another share called "students2" (pointing to the same folder on the server with the same permissions), it worked. My question is,
what would cause the original share to be inaccessible (show on the network but deny access) to usergroups that should have access? Thank you for your time, I look forward to your replies.
    Gareth

    Hi,
I didn’t found the similar issue, base on my experience, that situation may caused by DNS issue, could you try to access the share by the IP address? Please disable all your
AV soft then monitor the status again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS Entry Auto remove not working

    Dear All,
I have configured DNS Ageing for 30 days removal of unwanted host entry.but it will not work.
Active directory DNS having all unwanted host in forward lookup zone and as well as reverse lookup zone.
    how to solve this ?
    pls help
    Sunil
    SUNIL PATEL SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

    Hi,
This is a rather common problem when configuring Scavenging and Aging of stale DNS entries.  This has to be set in two spots, not just one as so many admins have difficulties with.  It isn't very obvious.
Aging and Scavenging must be set on both the DNS Server and on the Zone
that you want to clean.  In addition, DNS needs to be Active Directory integrated and resource records need to be dynamically registered.  Static entries are ignorned.
    First step:
To set aging and scavenging properties for the DNS Zones using the Windows interface
    Open DNS Manager.
In the console tree, right-click the applicable DNS server, and then click
    Set Aging/Scavenging for all zones.
Select the Scavenge stale resource records check box.
Modify other aging and scavenging properties as needed.
    Second Step:
To set aging and scavenging properties for the DNS Server using the Windows interface
    Open DNS Manager.
In the console tree, right-click the applicable DNS server, and then click
    Properties.
Select the Advanced tab,and then enable Enable automatic scavenging of stale records
check box. Once done, specify the Scavenging period (That is recurring
interval for Scavenging on a DNS server)  and click on OK
That will do it.  Your DNS entries will then start auto scavenging based on the times you have determined. Word of caution - do not set your aging too aggressively - I have seen where an admin had set aging down to 1 day and when it finally kicked
off, nearly brought the company to a halt.

    Hi Abhijeet,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry for late response.
No that Hotfix applies when you are using RDS server. For your case, please check whether you have successful connection to the server by pinging that server. After that check any windows Firewall rule might block the connection. For connecting to server remotely
we must have RDP port 3389 need to open from firewall end. Please verify the above details and also check below article for information.

    Hi,
Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."
    DC:windows Server 2008 R2
    Domain functional level:Windows Server 2003
When Winxp join domain, have no this error message.
    I checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2018583?wa=wsignin1.0 does't work.
There have 3 suggestion in this article:
1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Guo Ying,
I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 DNS Problem

    Hi,
I have a DNS Server hosted in Windows Server 2008 R2 and our clients are using Windows 7. All are working fine then suddenly there are times that our client cannot access our internal site and cannot connect with our IM which is also hosted in the server.
Tried to ping the server's IP but got this result:
Ping request could not find host .com. Please check the name and
     try again.
NSLookup works fine. Tried to use the ip address instead of the domain name and it works. Resetting network connection seems to resolve the issue but we cannot do it all the time especially when we have hundreds of computers in our office. Anyone have ideas
    regarding this?

    Hi,
“Resetting network connection seems to resolve the issue but we cannot do it all the time especially when we have hundreds of computers in our office. Anyone have ideas regarding
    this?”
It seems is the client IP address conflict, it may cause by your DHCP Conflict Detection Attempts value setup is not appropriate. You can try to set Conflict Detection Attempts
to a value other than 0.

  • Macs will not show up on DNS Windows Server 2008 R2

In our office, we have a Windows Server Infrastructure with several Macs (Imacs, mac pros, macbook airs etc).
Active Directory and DNS is running off a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server, with DHCP on a Cisco Router.
DHCP is configured to direct all DNS entries to the Windows DNS Server.
The problem that I'm having is that, while all windows machines show up on the Windows DNS Server, None of the Macs are registered. Macs are able to utilize the DNS Server correctly, but will not register on the DNS Listings.
Because I cannot access or ping Macs via their hostname, I cannot tell our third party backup software to point to a particular machine. Our workstations are all DHCP enabled, and since assigning a static ip to all the Macs here is not an option, I need to get this working, so that I can get our macs backing up.
I've followed a few similar articles, but they appear to be for older 2003 servers, which the 2008 R2 servers do not have those options. I do not want to join the Macs onto the windows domain, I merely want to get them registered on our DNS server.
The mac operating systems vary between Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1421684?start=0&tstart=0 <--- Article I was following
    Thanks,

I'm pretty sure that the DNS registration stuff is part of the Active Directory plug-in on OS X.  I'd recommend you give it a try.
GPOs are not enforced on the Macs if they're bound to Active Directory, _unless_ you've extended the Active Directory schema (which is a lot of work).  The main benefits to joining Macs to AD ar:
    * Centralized password management and policies (as you've defined in AD).
    * Single sign-on to various kerberized resources (i.e. Windows share points and internal web pages if you're using IIS and you use Kerberos to secure them, rather than NTLM).
Here's an Apple white paper which may help.  I would recommend you read this carefully and then decide whether or not you want to bind the Macs to AD.  I'd also recommend you test with a bound Mac to see if resolves this "host name in DNS" issue... I suspect it will.

  • BO XI 3.1 SP3 Install issue on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit

We are trying to install the lastest Build of Business Objects XI 3.1 SP3 on a new server with Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit OS (51038908_part1.exe,51038908_part2.rar, 51038908_part3.rar).
The setup never finish! It seems that the setup can't validate the CMS installation and is trying again and again.
In the "Enterprise XI 3.1 SP3 - Windows - Supported Platforms" document, the Windows Server 2008 R2 Entreprise 64-bit Edition is supported.
The antivirus is desactivated and the setup.exe file was launched in the administrator mode.
    Any ideas?
Edited by: Frederic Wojnarowski on Nov 22, 2010 5:45 PM

We have run into similar issues with that same package (51038908_part1.exe) which is a complete install of "BOE-3.1 package with SP3" for Windows 2008 Server that only installs in the 64-bit mode.
We had a 32-bit Oracle 10g client installed, that BOE did not recognize for the CMS - so the install was hanging at the CMS config...(no clear errors / no simple way to roll-back the failed install).
We only discovered the underlying Oracle issue when we deployed just the CMS with a local MySQL database - and then tried to point the CMS at the Oracle DB instead. It gave us TNS errors even though we could hit the same TNS without issue using SQL-PLUS on the same machine.
This lead us to assume that the 64-bit BOE couldn't connect via the 32-bit Oracle 10g drivers.
We have had trouble installing the 64-bit Oracle 10g client that we downloaded - so are now looking for some advice.
Anyone know which specific 64-bit Oracle 10g client should be used with the cumulative "BOE-3.1 package with SP3" 64-bit package (51038908_part1.exe)...?
I assume that this Oracle client will be used for any connection to the CMS / AUDIT Oracle databases - and any RPT content running on the CR-JobServers that is using an Oracle Native connection...?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 issues on OVS 3

I've been trying to get Windows Server 2008 R2 to work on OVS3 and been having issues.
First I tried to copy a working VM from OVS2 and it seemed to work, but it would crash whenever intensive I/O happened. I installed the OVS3 PVM drivers, hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. I moved it over to another server, thinking maybe it was a hardware issue. No luck there.
I also tried a fresh install. It boots up and when it starts to unpack the install files the VM reboots. I tried this with an NFS repository and on local disk with the same result.
Has anyone successfully installed Win2K8 Server on OVM3? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Both Mem and Max Mem were set to 2048 mb, so I figured it was fine. But I changed them both to 4096 mb and now it's working. Odd.
Both the copied VM and the fresh install are working.
    Thanks.

  • Download issue when Windows 7 Pro joins a Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

    Hi,
I purchased 2 new Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop computers that came with Windows 7 Professional operating system with SP1.
There were no Microsoft updates installed yet.  After I added one of these Dell computers to the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, I was not able to download several items.
    Below are several examples:
    1) I downloaded the Norton anti-virus installation file.  This file is not the full installation of Norton; it is more of a file where you execute it and it will download the full installation from the Internet like from their Norton web
site.  So when I executed this installation file, it does not download the full installation files.
It just hung at the screen saying “Downloading” and it will finally stop with an error (don’t remember the error message).
Note: If I have the full Norton installation file then I am able to install it on this computer with no problems.
    2) I downloaded the Adobe Reader installation file.  This file is not the full installation of Adobe Reader; it is more of a file where you execute it and it will download the full installation from the Internet like from their Adobe web
site.  So when I executed this installation file, it hung at the downloading part and then it will error out with a “Actionlist Not Found” message.
Note: If I have the full Adobe Reader installation file then I am able to install it on this computer with no problems.
    3) I installed Microsoft Office 2010 Standard version on this computer.
I configured Microsoft Outlook to retrieve emails from my email provider (pop and smtp settings).
After configuring Microsoft Outlook, I was able to send emails through Microsoft Outlook successfully (and very quickly), but he was unable to retrieve my emails. The progress bar for the Receiving in the "Outlook Send/Receive Progress" box
shows no progress. The Progress bar is not moving. There is a message at the bottom of Microsoft Outlook stating "Receiving message 1 of 6 (x.xx KB of x.xx MB)" and it is very slow. My new emails were not being retrieved at all.
I tried various pop and smtp servers that was available for my email provider, but all had the same effect.
    4) I can access certain web sites (e.g.
www.yahoo.com, www.cnn.com) while I cannot access other web sites like
www.usatoday.com, my web hosting email site.
Note: I had a Dell computer with Windows XP Professional operating system and this computer does not have any of the above issues.
The above are only a few examples that I have experienced.
If I removed this Dell OptiPlex 3010 computer from the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory then I still experience the same issue.
So as another test, I setup the other new Dell OptiPlex 3010 with the same Windows 7 Professional OS with SP1.
This time, I did not join the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory and I was able to successfully download the full Norton installation files, download the full Adobe Reader installation files, download my emails from Microsoft Outlook 2010, etc.
But once I joined this computer to the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory then I am not able to download these files and emails at all.
It seems like there might be some group policy or a security setting that is preventing these downloads so I disabled the group policy on the Windows Server 2008 AD and Windows 7 Profession OS, but it didn’t resolve the issue.
I disabled all of the firewall programs on this Windows 7 Professional OS, but it still did not resolve the issue.
Since the Windows Server 2008 AD did not have DHCP installed, I installed DHCP and setup a scope.
Then configured the Windows 7 Professional OS to obtain an IP address, but it didn’t resolve the issue.
If I move this Windows 7 Professional computer to another network where it did not have any Active Directory; it just had a wireless router serving DHCP then everything works on the Windows 7 Pro computer.
Any ideas what is the root cause when a Windows 7 Professional computer join a Windows Server 2008 AD?
    Thanks,
    wl_tech

    Hi,
Could you please tell some information for the AD environment and how it connect to the internet?
Regarding 3rd party installlers didn't work as expected, please also seek help in their offical website.
For outlook not receiving emails, could you please take a look in
Event Viewer and see if there are any special errors logged there?
And when trying to access the website like
www.usatoday.com, any special errors IE showed out?

  • Deployment issue on windows server 2008(64 bit)

    Hi all,
I am using crystal reports 2008 trial version for my web application. Its working fine in development environment but when I deploy application in windows server 2008 64 bit edition it shows following error:"An error has occurred while attempting to load the Crystal Reports runtime. Either the Crystal Reports registry key permissions are insufficient, or the Crystal Reports runtime is not installed correctly. Please install the appropriate Crystal Reports redistributable (CRRedist*.msi) containing the correct version of the Crystal Reports runtime (x86, x64, or Itanium) required."
Is there any resolution available for this problem except for changing the IIS settings for 32 bit applications?
    Rgds

Read the following [article|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/10d5fa88-2013-2c10-c9a5-f11963607d4e;jsessionid=(J2EE3417600)ID0244107750DB11172929121510648759End] as it goes over your issue.
Essentially you will have to set IIS to 32 bit at the least.

  • Windows 8.1 RDP Issues with Windows Server 2008 Standard.

I have an issue maintaining an RDP connection from 64-bit windows 8.1 (standard and pro) to 32-bit Windows Server 2008 Standard.  Initial connection is normal, and as long as I am constantly typing on the link, for the most part it stays up. However
if I do not keep typing, or go to another desktop program for a few minutes, and then go back, the following happens:
If I am typing into notepad (or some screen that does not require windows to be refreshed) I can continue to do so, so the connection has not been lost, however if I try to do something that requires more extensive exchange of information (like file
    - open, or even trying to pull up the start menu), the connection pauses with about half the screen refreshed, sometimes after about 30 seconds a bit more of the screen fills out, but otherwise the connection is not responsive. Then after about 2 minutes,
RDP reconnects, at which point I am back to "normal".  I have conducted some tests and made inquiries of others attempting to connect to the server.
    1) I can connect to other Windows (servers 2008 R2 and 2012)  with no connection issues from this PC
    2) I can connect to the 32-bit server with no issues using Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 from the same location as the WIndows 8.1 PC
    3) When I do a network speed test while having these issues I see full download and upload speeds, so I am not experiencing intermittent internet issues.
    4) No-one else from other locations (not of course using Windows 8.1) has any issues using RDP to the 32-bit Windows Server Standard.
These various tests seem to eliminate my network connection, and other operating systems, from the equation, and point to RDP issues on windows 8.1 connecting to the older OS.  I noticed in the September updates, a case 2989039 which seemed to point
to similar issues when using UDP through Remote Desktop Gateway.  That update is on my machine, and my connection has the setting Automatically detect RD Access Gateway server settings.
    Any thoughts anyone?

    Hi  RonaldRenaud,
If my understanding is right, this RDP issue only occur in the connection between Windows 8.1 and Server 2008.
Please check if you have installed the update kb2984006.
To resolve this issue caused by update 2989039, install update rollup 2984006. For more information, please refer to the following KB.
