Windows server 2008 R2 Access files from anywhere
I want to make windows server 2008 R2 access from anywhere. I will install window server. It will basically be a file server and I want to access it from anywhere. Can you provide some steps that should be done . there is need to have a public IP or without
public IP it can be done?
Thanks in advance.
Hi
You will need to have a public IP Natted to your internal IP. be aware you dont want to expose this server too much to the internet, make sure you only have your ISP open certain ports on the firewall or if you are hosting your own TMG server for example
publish it through there.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

THANKSHi,
I'm not very clear about the exact requirement.
I assume you would like to:
1. Able to access a share in company from anywhere.
2. Above to use a server from anywhere.
3. Above to use a server in your company from anywhere.
If I'm correct, the solution is Could products or Remote Desktop Service with VPN.
Please refer to Windows Azure to see if a cloud server could help in this situation.
http://azure.microsoft.com/
Also you can use OneDrive to store files on cloud side and you can access it from anywhere.
And for VPN please refer to this article:

Windows Server 2008 R2 - access from Anywhere
Dear All,
We have small business network in our institutions. Our network infrastructure is follows as,
Windows Server 2008 R2 with Domain Controller - Roles installed are ADDS, File Service, WDM, DNS, DHCP
Fully Qualified Domain Name : XXXXXX.local
Client System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit systems 30 Numbers.
Internet Connection: 1 Mbps download speed and 420 Kbps Upload speed from Airtel.
Router: TP-Link ADSL Router.
So far we have used our server within our premises, the router acted as a gateway and supplied internet service for server and client system. Now we want to access the server from outside of our network from i.e. domain users logon from anywhere from the
world. What are the requirements for this kind of setup and steps to implement this setup.
Thanks and Regards S.R. Karthick System EngineerHi,
Firstly, it is not recommended to install the DHCP role on a DC.
In addition, you can use the DirectAccess feature in Windows server 2008 R2 so that the clients
running Windows 7 Ultimate
can securely connect to the corporate network from any location without any type of traditional VPN. For more detailed information, please refer to the link below:
DirectAccess for Windows
Server 2008 R2

Windows Server 2008 End Of Support from Microsoft
Hi Team,
We are planning to user windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition for our application servers hosting. Before we install, would like to know when the support for 2008 ends from Microsoft
Please let me know your comments and also provide any reference links
Thanks//GopiHi,
Did you talked about Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 SP2?
Support ends 24 months after the next service pack releases or at the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first.
Accordig to the message above, mainstream support of Window 2008 R2 product family will be ended on 13/1/2015, and there is no new service pack released, then 2008 R2 SP1 support will also end on 13/1/2015 since when support for a product ends, support of
all the service packs for that product will also end.
Besides, you can also check the Service Pack Lifecycle Support Policy below:
http://support2.microsoft.com/lifecycle/default.aspx?LN=en-us&x=15&y=18

Susie

I have a basic .xml file on my Windows 2008 R2 desktop. I have set the file association for .xml files to Adobe FrameMaker 12. When I double-click the .xml file, it opens with FrameMaker. When I right-click -> open the .xml file, it opens with Notepad.
I need the .xml file to always open with FrameMaker, even when I use right-click -> open. How can I set this up for all users on a Windows 2008 R2 server?
Thank you!
-NicoleHi Nicole,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
When you double-click on a file in Windows explorer, the Windows shell looks up the extension of the file in the registry to see if the extension is registered. If the extension is not registered, Windows displays the Open With dialog box, allowing the
user to choose an application to associate with the file type. If the extension is registered, Windows calls the ShellExecute() function with a command of "open." It also passes the name of the file that was double-clicked as a command line parameter.
Associations go further than simply opening a file, though. If you right-click on a text file (.TXT) in Explorer you will see two items at the top of the context menu. The first is named Open. Choosing this menu item is the same as double-clicking the
file in Explorer. When you choose Open, NOTEPAD.EXE will be started with the selected file loaded (assuming a default Windows installation). The second menu item is called Print. Clicking this menu item will cause the file to be printed without displaying
Notepad at all.
There is some registry setting for the application association to take place, you can edit them under following path.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Test App File
(Quoted from below article)
More information:
Using file associations
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

Windows Server 2008 - Activating 180 evaluation period
I recently installed an evaluation copy of Windows Server 2008 which I downloaded from the Microsoft evaluation website. I did not immediately go through any activation process. I wasn't clear about the process previously but have attempted to activate
the software now as it now indicates that the Windows license is expired and the copy of Windows is not genuine. The issue I have with attempting to activate my copy is that the server is located on a private network where I do not have online access. There
does not appear to be any other option available to complete the activation.Hi,
Regarding the issue here, please check the below KB article to see if it could help:
How to extend the Windows Server 2008 evaluation period

ECC 6/MS Windows Server 2008/SQL Server 2008 Upgrade
I am working with a client who wishes to do an ECC upgrade from ECC 5 to ECC 6. They also wish to upgrade the Op System from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008; and the database from MS SQL 2005 to MS SQL 2008.
My proposal is to Upgrade ECC, then the Op System then the DB in each environment before moving forward. We would do the first upgrade in Sandbox to determine timing, issues, etc. We would create a production support path to be used during the project, then start the upgrades Dev-QA-Prod.
The client has said that this is a risky approach and that SAP recommends a 2 step process, that is, upgrade ECC 6 thru all environments and then go back and do the Op Sys and Db upgrades afterward.
In my mind my approach is less risky as we will ensure each environment is clean and functioning smoothly before moving forward; there is less intrusion to the end user; testing is only accomplished once in each environment. The actual production build would be split over 2 weekends, app upgrade first then op sys and db.
The assistance I need to understand isu2026.does SAP have a recommendation in this case? I have not seen anything that says not to do the single step process I am recommending.
Thanks for any support you can provide.Hi,
If SAP is recomending that is because They recomends not to "mix" upgrades with any other process like Heterogeneous system copies, DB upgrades, etc. In fact this is in the upgrade guides. But I think like some others here has already writen, that you could upgrade and change OS and SQL server in two different steps but in the same process so the downtime will be longer but it will be only one.
Of course this will depend on how long your upgrade downtime will take because usually the upgrade could take 7 hours more or less, post upgrade tasks, export task (R3load), change OS and SQL server if not using different HW, import task and post copy tasks.
What is the maximun downtime your client is ready to tolerate? If you have a whole weekend beginning from friday afternoon and ending Monday morning probably you will have enough time to do all in one weekend but again, it will depend on your tests. Why don´t you talk to your client and tell them if they have new HW already for this project to do a Prod copy in one of those servers as part of the whole project and take the times you will need. Then with that in perspective you could decide what approach is better.
With some upgrades done under my belt to different clients I don´t assure anything until I do a test upgrade including all changes (os or DB) necesary to finish time schedules, then with that in mind then we can redefine the way we will use and we make that clear before the beginning of the project. I always tell them that it is better to do a test like this if they don´t have much available downtime, the project will take longer but for sure the Production downtime will be shorter. -
Cannot install SQL Server Native Client 2012 on Windows Server 2008 Data Center
Is it possible to install SQL Server Native Client 11.0 (SQL Server 2012) on Windows Server 2008 Datacenter?
I tried to install it, but I get this error message:
"Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system. For information on supported configurations, see the product documentation."
Based on this article (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc280356.aspx), I see one of the supported operating system is Windows Server 2008.Hello,
Can you try to download and install Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 from the following link, and then reinstall the SQL Server Native Client 11.0 again?
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=16468
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client is included in the SQL Server 2012 Feature Pack. Based on the requirement of
the download page , you should apply SP2 for Windows Server 2008.

I have a problem with starting the Excel Application under a particular user (service account).
I try to schedule this C# script through an application X (not Windows Task Scheduler. And this
application will always use a service account to run services on the server). If I run the C# script in
command prompt under the same user, it runs. Under the application X, which uses the exact same
user, to initiate the C# script, it fails to open the Excel application (not sufficient permission?).
This script calls application.Workbooks.Open(<ExcelFileName>,0,false,Type.missing....). At this line
of code, it gives the following error:
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file "...". There are several possible reasons:
-The file name or path does not exist.
-The file is being used by another program.
-The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.
I tried all the methods that I found online as follow:
Create directory "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\Desktop" (for 64 bit Windows) or "C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop" (for 32 bit Windows).
Changed the DCOM config for the Microsoft Excel application to include this user for Local/Remote Launch and Access.
Enabled all macros in Excel application and set the Trust Center.
Add the user to have full control on all folders that contain the Excel file.
Under DCOM
config, Microsoft Excel Application, if I modify the Identity tab to check on "This User" and enter the username/password to let Excel always run under that user. Then the application runs perfectly. However, other users can't run the excel application
on their own with the following error: "Cannot use object linking and embedding". If I check "Use the launching user", then Excel can't be launched. No errors in the logs or events anywhere to check.
Yet, still the same error. I think it's permission but I am not sure where and what to do for this to work.
Now, normally, when I run this excel report, I can double-click on the file and it'd automatically run,
save the new parameters into the current file and generate a new excel file (with date attached to the
file name). That means there is a change (save) to the original file.
Environment: Windows Server 2008 R2 and running Microsoft Excel 2010.
I appreciate all your help!I am wondering if this has anything to do with having the user log into Excel.
In point #5 above: Under DCOM config, Microsoft Excel Application, if I modify the Identity tab to check on "This User" and enter the username/password to let Excel always run under that user. Then the application runs perfectly. However, other
users can't run the excel application on their own with the following error: "Cannot use object linking and embedding". If I check "Use the launching user", then Excel can't be launched. No errors in the logs or events anywhere to check.
Because running with the launching user proposes an user to run the Excel application. However, I do not think there is any where that we can pass in the password for this user to Excel. However, this Excel has all the permissions to Excel application as
well as the folders that have the Excel files.
Please help!
Thank you! -
Files Transfer from Windows Server 2008 R2 on Mac
Hi,
How can I transfer files from "Windows Server 2008 R2" on Mac? as now I am using 2 App (Microsoft Remote Desktop & Fast Remote Desktop) which allowed me everything but not transfer files on Mac, so any other recommendation or salutation?
ThanksHi,
You need to configure folder redirection.
Folder redirection enables access local folders during the remote session. Click the + button at the bottom of the dialog and choose a folder you want to have
redirected.
Configure Folder Redirection:
1. Click the + button.
2. In the Add Local Folder window, enter the following information:
l
Name: Set a name for the folder to be available during the remote session.
l
Path: Select the path to the folder to be available during the remote session.
3. Click the close button to save the remote desktop.

Dear All,
We are having an infrastructure setup of around 500 client computers managed through group policy.
Recently the domain controllers have been migrated from Windows Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2.
Since this account requires extremely strict environment, we need to figure the solution for restricting the users from access anything locally.
It would be great if you can assist me with the following query.
How to restrict users logged on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and browsing other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2 ?
Can we disable Network Tab on the left hand pane ?
explorer.exe is blocked already, but users are able to enter the Windows Explorer by clicking on the name which is visible on the Start Menu.> * explorer.exe is blocked already, but users are able to enter the

You cannot block explorer.exe when you do not replace the shell - the
desktop you see effectively IS explorer.exe...
Your requirement sounds like you need a custom shell:

[SOLVED] VBox: Access shared folders from Windows Server 2008 Guest
Hi,
I have installed virtualbox v4.2.4 on Arch and I launch a WIndows Server 2008 guest. I want to access shared folder from guest. How to do it?
Last edited by toni (2012-11-26 00:31:21)Hi,
I have done this but it does not work.
My network is configured as a NAT in virutalbox.
Also from WIndows server 2008 guest I do:
net use z:\\vboxsvr\mySharedFolder
Do I have to install additional software in host or do I have to configure something in Windows server 2008 guest?

What Drivers should I use to access SQL Server 2005 SP2 from Windows Server 2008 64 bit
and yes I do know that is an odd scenario so let me explain
I have just joined a project that is "in flight" where the customer is upgrading a LOT of things at the same time
(some Microsoft, some other supplier: some at the OS level, others at server or services levels)
the current step is replacing some services leaving the back end databases as they are
i.e. SQL Server 2005 SP2
a later step will upgrade the backend data bases which may make more work
What we have now runs on Windows Server 2003 32 bit using the OLEDB drivers
version 2000.86.3959.00
What we want must run on Windows Server 2008 64 bit still using the OLEDB option
which version should I download & try to install? Here are a known list of issues with this configuration with their corresponding workarounds: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/936302/en-us

Opening Excel Workbook Fails when run from Scheduled Task on Windows Server 2008 Rw
Hi,
I have a little vbs script that instantiates the Excel.Application object and then opens a work book to perform some tasks on it. The script runs fine when run from the command line. When I attempt to run it as a scheduled task (it is supposed to update
data that is pulled from a SQL Server at regular intervals), it fails with the following error:
Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'c:\test\SampleWorkbook.xlsm'. There are several possible reasons: .....
The file does exist. The path reported in the error is correct. The account under which the task is running is the same account I use to run it from the command line. User Account Control is not enabled, and the task is set up to run with highest privileges.
When I run the same script through the Task Scheduler from a Windows Server 2003 machine, it works without issue.
I was just wondering if somebody on this forum has run into a similar issue in connection with Windows Server 2008 R2 and figured out what the magic trick is to make it work. I'm sure it is rights related, but I haven't quite figured out what which rights
are missing.
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have. This is truly killing me ... trying to get it working on Windows Server 2012 without success.
I desperately need to automate running Excel macros in a "headless" environment, that is non-interactive, non-GUI, etc.
I can get it to work using Excel.Application COM, either via VBScript or Powershell, successfully on many other Windows systems in our environment - Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 (32-bit), etc., -BUT-
The two servers we built out for running our automation process are Windows Server 2012 (SE) - and it just refuses to run on the 2012 servers - it gives the messages below from VBScript and PowerShell, respectively-
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several different versions of Microsoft Excel (2007 Standard, 2010 Standard, 2010 Professional Plus, 32-bit vs. 64-bit, etc.), but it makes no difference.
Would be extremely grateful if any one out there has had any success in running Excel automation on Server 2012 in a non-interactive environment that they could share.
( I have tried adding the "%windir%\syswow64\config\systemprofile\desktop"
folder, which did fix the issue for me when testing on Windows Server 2008 R2, but sadly did not resolve it on Windows Server 2012 )
