Windows Server 2008 R2 updates fail - error code 80071A30
One of our windows 2008 servers has recently failed to install any updates.
I have tried the following solutions but non have worked.
1. Cleaning up the SoftwareDistribution folder.
2. Fixed some errors using WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
3. Installed the System update readiness tool. the CheckSUR.log detects no errors.
Still all updates fail with error code 80071A30
Here's a link to the CBS.log and CheckSUR.log

It may be worth mentioning that WSUS is installed on this machine. When updateing, cabs are downloaded from itself and it has always been like this without any problem. I have even tried updating directly from Microsoft servers without success. There is
though a difference when checking for updates directly from Microsoft in which the windows update first asks to update itself. the same error occurs anyway. Here's the first 130 lines of CBS.log

Hello
I am trying to install Exchange Server 2010 beta 1 onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 (build 7000) machine which has also been set up as a domain controller.
However when attempting to install the Client Access role, setup fails with the error below.
Does anyone know of a way to get around this please?
I have already searched for this error and not found any similar threads.
Also every time I press the code button on this forum it crashes the browser and I keep losing the message! (IE8 from within Server R2). Also the message box is very small, will not expand and keeps jumping to the top.
Thanks
Robin

Robin WilsonHello
Thanks for all the replies.
I have since wiped the system and installed everything again and it all worked this time so not sure what was wrong last time. I did try to uninstall all Exchange components and then uninstall IIS and Application server, reboot and re-install but I received the same error still when it came to installing the client access role.
Walter: I just attempted the standard installation which should have used the default self-signed certificate. Everything was a fresh install done at the same time on a freshly formatted PC.
For info last time when it failed to work:
- Installed Windows Server 2008 R2
- Installed Domain Controller role using dcpromo. I set the forest and domain as Windows Server 2008 R2
- Added a forest trust between main domain and test Exchange domain (set up as ex2010.local)
- Installed IIS and Application Server role
- Installed Hyper-v role
- Installed Desktop Experience feature
- Installed Exchange and recieved the error
When it worked I set up the forest and domain in Windows Server 2008 mode (i.e. not R2), installed Exchange first and then set up the forest trust and then Hyper-v. It did say it failed to configure dns which was probably because it started trying to do automatic updates half way through the dcpromo! DNS seems to work ok though.
I did notice this time that Hyper-v gave a warning about the virtual network adapter not being set up correctly and the local network did not work correctly although I could access the internet. Not sure if this could have been related to the cause of the problem previously. For now I have disabled the virtual network until I get time to try and get it working and so the mail will work in the meantime.
I also noticed that Hyper-v added an extra 443 ssl binding to the default website so as it had 2 bindings on port 443 it refused to start. After deleting one it worked.
I decided to install Exchange onto a domain controller as it is only a test and I wouldn't do it in a live environment. I am also short of test machines! It didn't give me any warnings about this actually, I think previous versions warn you that it is not recommended.
Andreas and Chinthaka: I did not know about the requirement to run the domain at 2003 mode. The main domain is running in 2008 mode with Exchange 2007 so I assume this is just a temporary beta related requirement. It does seem to be working (second attempt) so far in a 2008 mode domain although I haven't had a chance to fully test it yet.
Thanks
Robin
P.S. Sorry it's taken me a while to reply!

Generally such kind of issues are caused by third party programs such as CD burning programs, device driver etc.
First please refer to this article to see if there is anything helpful:
Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff972408(v=ws.10).aspx
Meanwhile from the description, it mentioned a file under C:\Windows\winsxs. Check the permission of the folder amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_676975d87cc9b6e6 and the file wcp.dll to see if the permission
and ownership are correct compare with the other folders.
Also as it provided 2 minidump files, you will need to use WinDBG to read the minidump files and see if there is any further information.

Problems LMS-4.2 Installation on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
Hi all,
During the installation of the LMS-4.2,
It passed the "Initializing" and "Copying" stages,
but, in the "Configuring", it never finishes,
Anyone had have a similar problem?
the installer is for - LMS-4.2 and the OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1Thanks for the update. Glad to know it has installed now.
There can be some port clashes and resource scarcity when other applications may be using it. Hence we recommend to have majorly LMS as the primary software on the server's.
Also, LMS is not supported in other languages installers or setups except English and Japanese.
There are a couple more things you can do/check prior to running the installation.
LMS generally need Naming convention to handle long names/path etc. By default C: has 8.3 Naming convention enabled. However if you installed on different drive (for eg E:), for which this may be disabled.
To check naming convention you can run the following command from Windows Command prompt:
cmd>fsutil.exe 8dot3name query <Drive>
Example:
C:\Users\winlau>fsutil 8dot3name query C:
The volume state for Disable8dot3 is 0 (8dot3 name creation is enabled).
The registry state of NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation is 2, the default (Volume level setting).
Based on the above two settings, 8dot3 name creation is enabled on C:.
8dot3 needs to be enabled for all drives LMS will potentially use, including:
Drive where TEMP/TMP is located
The drive LMS is installed to
The drive LMS backs up to
Drive used for a relocated RME Shadow directory or other nonstandard paths written to.
In some cases, altering the TEMP and TMP variables to be a short path (eg C:/temp or C:/tmp) may avoid the issue, but not always.
Hence, to be safe, it is best to enable 8dot3name creation globally, either via the registry or Windows CLI
Sample command to enable globally:
"fsutil 8dot3name set 0"
Sample command to enable on one volume:
"fsutil 8dot3name set X: 0"
Note that this needs a reboot to take effect. You should not disable 8dot3name creation which already has it enabled, especially the system volume (usually C:).

to install successfully. I've searched forums and documentation, but can't find a solution. Part of the problem is the lack of feedback by SCCM on what is wrong. I think I have narrowed down the symptom to the following error messages from the "C:\Windows\CCM\Logs\ClientIDManagerStartup.log":
[LOG[Certificate [Thumbprint C559304C1598F17641D0732EB9EB787169A25FA7] issued to 'SMS' doesn't have private key or caller doesn't have access to private key.
[LOG[Failed in GetCertificate(...): 0x87d00281]LOG]!><time="10:56:59.014+300" date="04-17-2014" component="ClientIDManagerStartup" context="" type="3" thread="3024" file="ccmcert.cpp:2122">
[LOG[CCMCreateAuthHeaders failed (0x8009200b).]LOG]!><time="10:56:59.014+300" date="04-17-2014" component="ClientIDManagerStartup" context="" type="3" thread="3024" file="clientauthutil.cpp:978">
When I use the Certificates MMC snap in to look at installed certs on this Windows Server 2008 R2 machine, there are plenty of normal and expected certificates there. There is also a branch called SMS with hundreds of entries, I have no idea what that is.
The above error seems to indicate a permissions issue. What do I do to fix this SCCM install? It seems like a server cert issue, not an SCCM issue, so I'm posting to the Windows Server forums.
Thanks in advance.

Backup Problem in Windows Server 2008 R2 std SP1
I have taken backup of Windows Server R2 std SP1 from Server Manager it is around 16gb .vhd file from Server Computer
When I am restoring in other Server PC of Windows server R2 std sp1 from Server Manager it is giving message backup not found.
Why this message is coming? I cant restore it?Hi,
If you restore a Windows Server 2008 R2 to a new hardware, you need to perform a Bare Metal Restore and the two physical computer must have the same make, model, and configuration (identical hardware).
For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Updates
Hi,
I would like to know that i am having windows server 2008 R2 server's including the VMs also.
I don't know when to update these server's as these all are in the domain.
Kindly help me out as few of them are application based , and in production server's also.
Urgent,
Regards, Ravi KumarMight be there will be an option to stop automatic reboot after installing the updates. so on internet i found some info which might be helpful for you...
Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Update->No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Update installation
You can get to this by running "gpedit.msc"
Reboot to apply changes
The best solution that I am aware of is to turn off automatic updates. Then you schedule maintenance windows with your customers and apply the updates manually and do the reboot then make sure everything that you need is running after the reboot.
Just stopping the reboots is a bad idea because that gives the impression that you are fully updated when you really aren't since updates that need reboots to complete...well...you know...need reboots to complete. -
SQL Server 2008 KB2977321 Failed with Error code 1642
As part of application of security patches via windows update, sql server KB2977321 was applied along with a number of OS security patches.
Prior to applying the patches, I stopped the agent, engine, reporting, analysis and full text services.
The Sql server build prior to windows update was (for both instances):

After the update process, my main instance is showing (the second instance is not in use yet and I have left it in its stopped state)

The instance came up successfully and seems to be operating normally. Was there an error or was the KB installed correctly as the result of the windows update process indicated?
Is there a way I can verify this?I did some research on this particular KB article and it seems to be related to Master Data Services which I am not using. The KB was pushed automatically and I am not sure that it was a required update in our situation. I'd like to understand exactly
what caused the error message before initiating a repair as this is a production and not a test environment. Everything appears to be functioning properly and I have received direction from Microsoft in the past that information in some logs identified
as level 'error' are in fact to be ignored. I checked the windows update and this KB shows 'Successful' rather than failed or cancelled.
I would also like more information on why sql server services should not be stopped prior to allowing the OS patches to be applied. I have received messages in the past that stopping the services before service packs are applied
prevent the necessity for a reboot of the machine. I've never heard before that it is a best practice not to stop Sql service prior to applying patches. Once the services are stopped, I have our infrastructure admin start a VM snapshot on
the machine then kick off the windows update process. When done, I reboot the machine, test out Sql Server processes and then if all goes well give the ok to release the VM snapshot. I've supported various databases for 12 years, Sql Server for 5
years and this is the first time I've heard stopping the service manually can cause problems. If that is the case, I will certainly change how I do things....
I did run the discovery report and the results follow:

Infinite reboot: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
Windows server has been running without issues up until this weekend: Two updates were installed; KB3020370 April 25 & KB3048761 April 26
From looking at the logs, it seems that the server started its infinite reboot loop April 25th. I want to be able to see what is triggering the windows request to reboot. The two KBs mentioned above show as install successfully; so I don't think they
are the culprit to the infinite reboot. But I am out of thoughts on how to proceed further in troubleshooting this issue.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
RobstgHi Robstg,
To verify if this issue is caused by these updates, could you boot the server into safe mode then remove the updates from control panel?
Besides, is there any warning or error in the evnet viewer?
Best Regards.

Mac OS (10.6.4) with Windows Server 2008 file shares, kernel errors
We experience problems with the Windows enviroment and around 15 Apple computers running MacOS 10.6.4. All Macs are Mac Pro and bought just before the hexacore series.
Problem 1: At random times the network is really slow, finder can't display the items in a SMB share. The shares are located on a Server 2008.
Problem 2: When a file is openend, there is a lock file on the share. When the document is saved and closed, the lockfile isn't removed directly. This causes problems when people reopen the document too fast and get a read-only document because the file is allready in use.
I tried to copy a 80GB file from a Ubuntu (created with /dev/null) to the Mac. There are no problems copying it from Ubuntu with rsync.
Then I moved the 80GB file to the server share, these errors came up:

Problems arrised when Mac OS 10.6 got installed
Previously we used 10.4 with ADMitMacThis might relate to you as you are using a Windows 2008 Server with Mac clients.
Apparently there seems to be an issue with SMB, since Microsoft rolled out SMB 2.0 with Windows 2008 Server. According to Microsoft, SMB 2.0 is supposed to solve world hunger and bring peace to the middle east, but in reality, it just puts up more road blocks for non-Microsoft platforms. Check out this article I found:
http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-disable-smb-2-on-windows-vista-or-server-2008.htm
Currently we have an issue with all 40 of our Macs not being able to save files properly to the Windows 2008 file server due to what the message claims to be a permission issue, but in reality it seems like something to do with the SMB protocol. We are investigating the issue and will see in a few days if the problem can be resolved by disabling SMB 2.0 on Windows 2008 Server.
Let us know if this problem resolves your problem as well. You never know how many other issues can be caused by a twitchy SMB protocol. -
