Windows Server 2008 SBS and Office 2007

Hello, the problem I am having is having Safe Senders and Safe Recipients imported into Outlook 2007 SP2 from group policy. It simply won't append the list. The environment is the following:
Clients: Windows XP Professional with SP3 installed. MS Office 2007 with SP2 installed.
Server: Windows 2008 SBS with SP2 installed.
What I have setup and tried:
1. Installed the ADMX files correctly on the server and created a GPO with the Outlook settings I need:
  - Specify path to Safe Senders and Recipients files. Location: \\SERVER\netlogon\SafeSenders.txt
2. Attached the GPO to the correct OU (users are in the OU).
3. Installed the client side extensions from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3628 on the Windows XP machines.
Even after setting this up the lists still will not import into Outlook 2007. What I have tried and other notes:
- Clients have access to the \\SERVER\netlogon share area. Verified through Windows Explorer.
- Tried forcing group policy update using gpupdate /force No results.
- Tried logoff and reboot combinations on client machines and still no results.
- gpresult returns the GPO is applied (but clearly it's not working).
New to setting this up to Windows XP clients, works on Windows 7 clients flawlessly. Ideas? Solutions? Thanks.

Hi Rob Holms,
Based on Donpick's suggestion, if the issue still exists, you can try to enable GPSV debug logging on one client with the problematic clent. This log records the detailed information about the group policy applying process which is very useful for troubleshooting
the group policy related issues. To enable this debug logging, please perform the following steps:
1). In the Regedit Editor, expand HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Window NT\CurrentVersion.
2). Under the folder, create a new key called “Diagnostics”.
3). Under the key, create a DWORD value “GPSvcDebugLevel” and set the value as
0x30002.
After making this change, run  gpupdate /force to reproduce the issue. After that, check %SystemRoot%\Debug\UserMode\ folder and analyze the log to get more help.

    There is no downgrade procedure.
    A downgrade is 'licensing only'.
You need to have a copy of Windows Server 2003 Standard Media to install, you will also need a license key for 2003.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 DNS Problem

    Hi,
I have a DNS Server hosted in Windows Server 2008 R2 and our clients are using Windows 7. All are working fine then suddenly there are times that our client cannot access our internal site and cannot connect with our IM which is also hosted in the server.
Tried to ping the server's IP but got this result:
Ping request could not find host .com. Please check the name and
     try again.
NSLookup works fine. Tried to use the ip address instead of the domain name and it works. Resetting network connection seems to resolve the issue but we cannot do it all the time especially when we have hundreds of computers in our office. Anyone have ideas
    regarding this?

    Hi,
“Resetting network connection seems to resolve the issue but we cannot do it all the time especially when we have hundreds of computers in our office. Anyone have ideas regarding
    this?”
It seems is the client IP address conflict, it may cause by your DHCP Conflict Detection Attempts value setup is not appropriate. You can try to set Conflict Detection Attempts
to a value other than 0.

    Hello,
your description is a bit confusing. You get the error message when you try to add the other DC to the DNS management console on one machine?
Both DCs belong to the same domain according to your description?
Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from both DC/DNS servers here.
BTW: PDC/BDC concept is gone since the start from AD with Windows 2000 Server. All DCs are the same, difference are only the FSMO roles, still that can be held from any DC in the domain according to some rules.

  • Do we need CALS for windows server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 if 2008 R2 is just a stepping stone?

We currently have a server on Windows Server 2008 RC SP2 64-bit with approximately 20 clients.
We want to upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2 but first need to upgrade to Windows 2008 R2 to allow us to do a straight upgrade.
Is it possible to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 with the 5 CAL's included and then upgradeto 2012 R2 and install 20 new CAL's and keep all users accounts and domain PC's the same?

Ok sorry for using the wrong terminology... I was under the impression for each client (Computer) connecting to the server we will need a CAL (Client Activation License) in order for the computer to be a domain PC on the server. Do I need 20 CALS's
for Windows Server 2008 R2 and then another for Windows Server 2012 R2 if we are only upgrading to 2008 R2 to be able to upgrade to 2012 R2 without having to do a clean install.
For WindowsServer (Standard edition or Enterprise edition or DataCenter edition), a Client Access License (CAL) is required for each device (if you're using the per-Device CAL licensing method), or, is required for each user (if you're using the per-User
    CAL licensing method).
(whether you use per-Device, or per-User, is up to you, it comes down to cost).
CALs are version-specific (to a point) - i.e. if you purchased WS2008 CALs for your 20 devices, for use with your WS2008 server, and you are now upgrading that server to WS2012, you need to upgrade your CALs.
If you are adding a second server which is WS2012, and you are keeping your WS2008 server, you need to upgrade your CALs (because you only purchased WS2008 CALs which don't grant you the rights to connect to the newer server).
If you were to install your second server as WS2008, you wouldn't need to purchase additional CALs, because as long as the version is the same, a single CAL grant you access to unlimited server (of the same version).
CALs can be tricky to correctly license.
    Here's some introductory reading:
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/client-access-license.aspx#tab=1
And, none of this relates to the technical aspects of product installation/configuration at all (e.g. clean install vs. upgrade).
Windows Server CALs are not license keys/tokens/files which you install/load/download - Windows Server CALs are quite literally paper-based (just like a drivers license or car registration). You are required to have them, to be correctly licensed, but, you
don't physically do anything with them to own/drive a car.

  • Windows Server 2008 x64 and Crystal Reports Server Embedded

We're attempting to certify our software with Windows Server 2008 x64 and want to know the best way to configure both the server and client of Crystal Reports Server Embedded.  Currently, our software is certified against Windows Server 2003 x86, and we install Crystal Reports Server Embedded XI Release 2 (no SP) on the application server, and we deploy the Crystal Reports .NET merge modules for XI Release 2 (no SP) on any client machines.
I believe I am correct in stating that no version of Crystal Reports Server Embedded officially supports Windows Server 2008 x64 (based on some other forum postings) until SP1 comes out (which I don't think has happened at this point).  If that is true, we can live with installing the RAS on a separate Windows Server 2003 x64, if that's even possible.  With that said, can we even get our Windows Server 2008 x64 running with the latest Crystal Reports 2008 .NET merge modules?  We've tried many different configurations between CR XI R2 SPs and CR 2008 for both client and server and have very little luck (either it won't install correctly because of x64 or missing .cabs, etc.) on both the client and server side of things.
Can someone suggest the optimal configuration when Windows Server 2008 x64 is in the mix, noting that we can use a secondary Windows Server 2003 (x64 preferred but can fallback to x86)?  Or do we have to wait for Crystal Reports Server Embedded 2008 SP1 to be released, and if so, does anyone know of the date?
    Thanks,
    Ross Beehler

  • How to merge partitions in Windows Server 2008 quickly and effectively?

How to merge partitions in Windows Server 2008 quickly and effectively?

    Hi,
In Windows systems we can only extend a partition to unallocated space behind it - so if we have 2 consistent partitions, we can only delete the second one and extend the first one.
If the 2 partitions are on 2 different disks, you can also create a spanned volume - you will still need to delete the second partition and convert both disks to dynamic disk to create the spanned volume.

  • Essential event viewer bugs with "Forwarded Events" log in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7

To my general experience, Windows event viewer is one of the most problematic, faulty management tools in the case of extensive use of its more sophisticated capabilities. The sole description as well as reproduction of some entangled failures would require
    remarkable effort.
With the "Forwarded Events" log however, the situation becomes particularly worse in that even simple functionality fails and workarounds are difficult to find. That’s what I’ll describe here in order to share my experience with interested users.
For precision: I’ve extensively used event viewer on a German Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Windows SBS 2011 Standard SP1). The bugs I found on that system, I could reproduce on a German Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit SP1, too.
Problem 1: Failure of even simple event filtering
To reproduce this problem, execute these steps on a test machine with any of the two OS mentioned above:
    (i) To prepare log contents, do either of the following:
    (a) populate some events to your local "Forwarded Events" log (most simply by subscribing events from other logs of the same machine; stop subscription if you have collected some events)
    Or
    (b) copy a non-empty log file "ForwardedEvents.evtx" from another machine (with any of the two OS mentioned above) to your test machine and open the file in event viewer.
(ii) Navigate to your "Forwarded Events" test log and open the filtering dialog. In the "Includes/Excludes Event IDs" field, type: 1-9000. Click OK.
(iii) Look at the results pane: Surprise, 0 Events! Do you really have no event IDs between 1 and 9000 in your test log?
(iv) Another example, if you have forwarded security events in your test log: Clear filter, if any previous filter is in place. Open the filtering dialog. In "Keywords" sub-dialog, choose "Audit Success". Click OK.
    (v) Look at the results pane: Surprise, 0 Events! Do you really have no successful security monitoring events in your test log?
I’ll finish here. If you have a rich variety of events in your test log available, let your imagination run wild to test around. Finally include some simple manually created or modified XPath filters on the XML tab of the filtering dialog. I promise, you’ll
find a lot of additional strange results.
Problem 2: Cannot save manually selected events to .evtx file
Navigate to your "Forwarded Events" test log. In the results pane, select one or more events by highlighting them by mouse clicks. In context menu, choose "Save selected events". In the "save as" dialog, choose file type *.evtx
and save your file. Open the newly created file in event viewer. Result: Surprise, no events inside the new file!
Have more fun with forwarded events
    Helmut

Did you mean that right click Forwarded Event and select "Filter Current Log..."? Since I can filter correct event vai the "Filter Current Log..." in my Lab environment.
    Hi Justin,
yes, I mean "Filter Current Log ... " (in my German systems: "Aktuelles Protokoll filtern ... ").
What do you mean with "my Lab environment" exactly?
In the meantime, I performed additional tests. I copied the "ForwardedEvents.evtx" test file from Server 2008 R2 resp. Windows 7 to
    (i) German Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit RTM
    (ii) German Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit, up-to-date
in order to view and filter the file there.
Results: Same event viewer problem on Windows 8 RTM, but correct behavior on Windows 8.1!

  • Windows server 2008 R2 and NFS mounted subdirectories.

I am mounting from a Windows Server 2008 R2 Box to a RHEL 6.3 machine and I am able see the folders; however, I am unable to see the sub-folders via the mapped NFS mount in windows. Any ideas as to why? Some additional facts are below.
    1. We are using an NFS mount from Windows to RHEL (mount -o
\\RHELBOX\ops\resources R:)  We NFS mount from RHEL to a Storage device - the fstab entry looks like this:
    10.9.9.9:/vol/afpres1/psf_prod
    /ops/resources/prod     nfs
    _netdev,defaults
    0 0
    10.9.9.9:/vol/afpres1/psf_test

    /ops/resources/psf
    nfs          _netdev,defaults
    0 0
The RHEL export file looks like this.
/ops/resources 10.4.4.4(rw,sync,no_all_squash,insecure,nohide)  (the 10.4.4.4 IP address is the of the 2008 r2 server
    /ops/resources 10.4.4.5(rw,sync,no_all_squash,insecure,nohide)
    /ops 10.4.11.66(rw,sync,no_all_squash,insecure,nohide)

  • Windows Server 2008 (TS) and Lync Web App installation failure

    Hey folks,
I've run into a little big problem due the Lync Web App installation via mstsc on a stand alone Terminal Server 2008 SP2 64 Bit. When I tried to install the Lync Web App Plugin via
mstsc and standard user I get the message:
    "The system administrator has
set up a policy that the installation
    prevents"
    Till that it's just fine.
The next thing I did is to disable the UAC and DEP, but same problem as above. I also tried to extract the install EXE for the MSI packages to allow the installation. But did not work.
After I searched the internet for an answer relating to this problem I've had to create or change a RegEdit entry. So I switched to the registry to:
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
and created a DWORD entry DisableMSI and set it to 0. Then I tried the installation of Lync Web App Plugin via
mstsc and standard user again and this message appeared:
"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755"
Now the curious thing is, that when I am logged on locally, the standard user is able to install the Lync Web App Plugin. And it works fine. After the installation is complete I can switch to mstsc again and it works.
The only thing what doesn't work is to install Lync Web App Plugin via mstsc into the user profile.
    Any suggestions?

Before you install the application, change your user mode to installation mode.
You can run the following command with Prompt Command:
    Change user /install
After the application is installed, change back to execution mode, you can do so by running the following command:
    Change User /Execute

  • Automate WinRE in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7

My department administrates a lot of 2008 R2 and Windows 7 VM's. The way these systems are configured is that they
are headless (no direct human interaction with the OS itself). I wanted to know if there is a way to make the startup repair tool automatic so no one has to actually tell it to enter the startup repair utility, repair, and boot back into the OS (if possible).

    Hi,
Please understand that a computer running Windows Vista or later can automatically fail over into the on-disk Windows RE only if a boot failure is detected. At startup, the Windows loader sets
a status flag to indicate that the boot process has started, and this flag is typically cleared before the Windows logon screen is displayed. If the boot attempt fails, the flag is not cleared. The next time the computer starts, the loader detects the flag
and assumes that a boot failure occurred. When this happens, the loader launches Windows RE instead of Windows. Since these are Windows 7 VMs, if you want to make them auto boot in to WinRE, maybe you could insert the WinRE disk on the virtual drive, and make
it as the first boot option.
Regarding how WinRE works, please refer to the following article.

Is there any documentation we can check if SQL 2008 SP3 is compatible with Sharepoint 2007 SP2 or SP3? Both Sharepoint and SQL servers are running on separate Virtual machines (Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2(64-bit)). Currently DB is running on

I'm not aware of any known issues with SQL Server 2008 SP3 and SharePoint 2007. I did a quick check and saw one person reporting an issue with their Central Admin site after applying the SQL Server update, but that's it.
With that being said, I would strongly encourage you to test out the application of that SQL Server service pack in a non-production environment well before you apply it in production. There is always a chance that your environment has something set up in
it that would cause an unexpected issue, and the best way to get an idea of whether or not an issue exists is by doing it somewhere else first before you do it in prod.
