Hii,
While upgrading my Virtual Machine from Windows Server 2003 STD 32 Bit to Windows Server 2008 STD 32 Bit...it gets stuck at Gathering files 0%..
I have tried my changing the ISO file and also copied the setup files to one of my local drive then to having the same issue...
I have up graded almost 40 to 45 server but still didnt face such problem please suggest me any solution and i have also tried my googling the same but no luck...
And for info its an VM server in ESXI 5.5

Hi
Might help:
Open Windows Explorer on the system you are trying to upgrade AFTER a failed attempt
There will be three new folders:
$UPGRADE.~OS
$WINDOWS.~BT
$WINDOWS.~LS
Go into the Security Properties and give "Everyone" Full Rights (on each folder)
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 hangs on Welcome screen

    Hi people,
I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter with Hyper-V role installed. This is production server DELL PowerEdge R710 with 72GB memory. Since few months ago I had problem, from time to time, to RDP to server because it was taking too much time to pass
from Welcome screen to desktop. Last week when i restarted it I couldn't login to it at all, it hangs on Welcome screen for hours. Well I'm aware of Microsoft walktrought and i used devnodeclean /r and after 2 hours it cleaned registry from ghost drives created
by DPM and after restart i still got a problem. I can't install hotfix from safe mode so i can't really try that solution. Same thing with Welcome screen hanging is happening when i: RDP to it with msft rdp, with visionapp, dell drac kvm console and directly
on server. Virtual machines on it is working and i can access Hyper-V from other server console untill i try to login and then RPC service fialed.

    Hello,
Start by running msconfig and disable all startup items / services except Microsoft ones. Once done, restart the server and check results.
Also, update all possible drivers especially the graphic card one.

  • Trying to zip / compress a file in Windows Server 2008 & SQL Server 2008 R2 server

    Hi,
We are trying to zip / compress a xml file that has been created by retrieving data from SQL Server 2008 R2 database running on Windows Server 2008.
To compress this file, we cannot use any external softwares like 7-zip or WinZip.
So, we would like to know if there is any windows default compression tool that works on command line to compress the file?
As this is a live server we cannot apply any other softwares.
Please suggest any ways to do it in Windows Server 2008 machine.
    Thanks & Regards

  • File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks on Windows server 2008

    Hi Expert,
I found that the properties of File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks service disabled after I install the windows server 2008 64bits. I tried to install that service via adding the file and printer sharing services in the properties of local area connection, but it doesn't contain any service in the popup box.  Also, no such service file available in the disk when I tried to install the service from installation disk of windows server 2008 64bits. Is the file "sacsrv.dll" corresponding to the service name of file and printer sharing? I found it is in the directory of "Windows\system32".  I have no idea about where is the problem? Do I miss some components? Please tell me what can I do for it? Thanks!
    Best Wishes,

Do any experts know the reason of this problem?  Thanks!

  • Windows Server 2008 r2 File service and Storage File opened by "another user"

When I was using Windows server 2003 it show files opened by "user's name" but after changing to windows server 2008 r2 it only shows File opened by "another user" this is a hug problem in our organization which has around 200 staff's
sharing files, and dont know who has opened file,
We administrator can see and close opened file from "Manage opened files" but we want users also to see who has opened current file they are using instead of showing opened by another user displaying the user's name of the file opened.
Can anyone help me with this problem,
    Thank you in Advance,

    Hi,
I tried on a Windows 2008 R2 system and here is the result.
Here "2" is a standard domain user so it could be displayed correctly.
I would like to know if the issue specifically occurs on Office files? If so it could be an Office issue instead of system related. You can try one of the following 2 files:
    Excel 2007 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598133
    Excel 2010 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598143

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V

My attempts to install are failing with a message "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing....Error code: 0x800705070".
I am posting this on the Wondows 2012 Server forum but I have had exactly the same problem as described below with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
As the title says this is on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 host with all current updates. I have downloaded the ISO file from a Technet subscription file twice, once by direct download and once by the Akamai downloader. The virtual disk is connected with
the default IDE driver. I mounted both installation images as ISOs, located on a file system on the host server.  I have tried installs by deleting the VM and recreating both the VM and a new virtual disk, re-using a previously created virtual disk, and
deleting the partitions in a previously created virtual disk, and executing the format command, and then attempting the install.
I have exactly the same problem trying to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM on the same host OS.  With those attempts, I downloaded the Technet subscription iso 4 or 5 times, and burned one to a DVD which I attached to the created VM.  Same
    error message.
The virtual machines and virtual disks I created and used were all located on an RAID5 array, on a builtin Intel RAID controller using Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 11.2.0.1066.  The host Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 uses this file system
but the OS is installed on a dedicated drive (C).
I had previously created a guest VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 (several months worth of updates ago) without drama.
I have spent hours reading forums and blog articles on this.  A common response is to download the iso another time, and/or burn it to a DVD instead of mounting an iso image. Although I didn't do the later yet with 2012 Server, but I have done these
other steps attempting to install Windows 2008 Server SP1. The install process takes a while (not to mention doing multiple downloads). Given this seems to be a common recommended remedy, and indeed based on posts does seem to eliminate the problem is some
cases, why doesn't somebody change the Microsoft installer program so it does a thorough integrity check at the beginning of the install process?

    Jeff,
After the exercise of Windows 2012 Server successfully installing (as I described above) I also successfully installed Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V.  From my standpoint, I have eliminated the problem (which isn't the same as correcting the problem).
The answer to your specific question regarding Hyper-V support is that the motherboard I am using, an Asus P5Q, is not supported by Windows 2008 R2 because it doesn't use ECC memory, and the vendor doesn't say it supports Windows 2008. But I am sure you
know the motherboard vendors often don't test older motherboards with newer software versions.  It appears that in specifying ECC memory Microsoft is trying to protect users of Windows Server from hurting themselves, not saying the software won't run.
Having said that, my suspicion in the beginning was, and still is, that it was some variable(s) left in an unknown state in the Hyper-V environment, which was why after trying to install Windows 2008 R2 several times I tried Windows 2012 which resulted in
the same error, and then encountered the same error trying to install Windows 7 on the same Hyper-V installation. The specific Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 server had run without any operating problems for months before I started having trouble, and although it
had been quite a while since I had created VMs, that process used to work.  The hardware didn't change. What changed was applying updates through Microsoft Update, and a few access control rights I changed, and at least I think, I set back to their original
    value.
So in short, no, my hardware isn't supported by Windows 2008 Server.  Two, your assertion that you are running the same software configuration that I am is very unlikely to be true. There are an extremely large number of things which are different between
your test system and mine, such as which Windows 2008 components are installed, what updates were installed and in what order they were installed, and what other third party software each of us is running, and between AD, and all the features, a large number
of potential differences in ACLs, options, etc. and I don't for a minute think this particular problem was caused by the underlying hardware.
I do appreciate your taking the time to try to help me, and I hope there is one thing you and I could agree on. Microsoft could pretty easily make it much easier to isolate problems. In this day and age reporting hex error codes (as opposed to doing the
table lookup in the error handling proc), and not providing more diagnostic information seems to me to be almost quaint.  And in this case Microsoft can dismiss my problems on the grounds it was all on unsupported hardware. Unfortunately, I think they
are missing an opportunity to make their software better, because in my opinion what I encountered there are a set of conditions which will cause installations to fail that aren't going to get corrected.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 System State Backup fails "the parameter is incorrect"

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem as I've found in a few other threads.

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/0b0f2d9c-e3b1-4f85-a6d2-2e15e5a15bc1
I've tried running the vshadow.exe -wm2 > out.txt command and searching the output for invalid paths, but I can't seem to find any paths that looks incorrect.
I've also done a registry search under HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services for the / character and didn't come up with any in any paths either.
The server is a pretty new install. DC, DNS, DHCP, File and Print services. It has been running in production for about a week for a small business. Their previous server desperately needed changing over, so it got pushed in fairly quick. I never assumed
I would have had trouble with the system state backing up!. It would be nice to get it working so I can sleep at night :). The old DC is still running, so all is not lost in a failure, but still... I guess also once I've demoted the old DC, I can restore AD
just by restoring the entire system image (Don't have to worry about USN sync if only single DC), but I would still like a system state backup.
    Thanks, Ryan

    Hi,
Try to apply the following hotfix.

  • In place upgrade of Server 2003R2 STD to 2008 SP2 fails at "Gathering Files"

I have a customer with two identical Dell servers. They both had Server 2003R2, and are both DC's. I did an inplace upgrade on the primary server in December to Server 2008 SP2 STD x86 without issue. I have since gone onsight to upgrade the second server
to 2008 and the installation fails at the "Gathering Files" part of the installation.
I have tried new medai, checked the event log. All I get is a popup that says "Installation encountered and error and cannot continue" and then I am back to the 2003 desktop. All of the pre-work completed without fail as to the domain prep etc. I cannot
find any reference on line as to this issue save for a few regarding Vista. I know Vista and Server 2008 SP2 are the same kernal, but the one solution I found was to remove user accounts, which i cannot do as its AD controller.
Please advise, as this is a remote customer and I only get on site 2 to 3 times a year and this upgrade is behind schedule. Thank you in advance for your asistance.

    Hi,
I suggest performing a Clean Boot first. This can reduce third-party software conflictions during the upgrading.
    Clean Boot
    ========
    1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility.
Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
    2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
    4. Restart the computer and test the issue.
Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility,
check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK".
Then upload all unnecessary hardware devices such as sound card, network card and external USB drives.
Now upgrade to Windows Server 2008 again.
If any error message appears, please let me know the exact wording of the error message.
In addition, please upgrade the following files (if they exist) to

  • .chm on Windows Server 2008 hangs on a hyperlink to an embedded .xls file

This link has not caused problems on Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2003. On Windows Server 2008, if a user attempts to go to the link he gets the option to open or save the file. Either option causes an "application crash". The .xls is actually contained within the .chm.
Is there a security setting we need to know about?

CHMs themselves are not intended to work on a server, as described in http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/chm_mspatch/896358.htm
Maybe Microsoft have extended the security but I have not seen anything reported here.

    Hi,
Generally such kind of issues are caused by third party programs such as CD burning programs, device driver etc.
First please refer to this article to see if there is anything helpful:
Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff972408(v=ws.10).aspx
Meanwhile from the description, it mentioned a file under  C:\Windows\winsxs. Check the permission of the folder amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_676975d87cc9b6e6 and the file wcp.dll to see if the permission
and ownership are correct compare with the other folders.
Also as it provided 2 minidump files, you will need to use WinDBG to read the minidump files and see if there is any further information.

  • Unable to open Office files on SharePoint 2010 sites on Windows Server 2008 R2

Setup: Windows SharePoint Server 2010 sp1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 (hosted on VMWare VSphere ESXi 5.1)
Secured using Domain SSL from GlobalSign.
    Client OS: Windows 7 Professional 32bit & Windows XP SP3 32 bit
    Browsers: IE10, IE9,IE8
    Office: Office 2010, Office 2010 sp2 (both 32bit), Office 2007
Problem Description: Only recently, users started having issues with opening Office files (Word, Excel) on SharePoint sites. When you click on an Office file e.g. Word Document, it comes up with the option to select "Ready only" or "Edit"
and choosing either options and re-entering the login credentials results in the
application hanging. If you leave it for a while (about 5 minutes) sometimes the file opens and other times it gives the error "Could not open https://portal.com/XXX/XXX/Document.docx". Even when it opens, it's extremely
sluggish and can't do anything other than end it via Task Manager. Same with excel files.
This happens to all the users all different OS and browsers.
On XP Pro SP3 w/ IE8, when you click on the file, the login prompt keeps popping back up repeatedly and if you click cancel, the file loads up anyway but no way of saving back onto the SharePoint site.
IMPORTANT: One exception is when logged in as a Site Collection Administrator, it
works like a dream bizarrely!!!! Opens, Edits and saves back fine on the SharePoint site.
    Have tried following:
    1. Repaired Office 2010 Pro; Uninstalled/Re-installed Office 2010 Pro
    2. Reset Browser, unticked automatically detect proxy settings.
    3. Emptied OfficeOfflineCache on Client
    4. Removed WebDAV from the SharePoint server
    5. Added Antivirus folder exclusion (We use SEP 11) on the SharePoint Server
Note: PDF files opens fine for all users.
I would immensely appreciate if anybody has got any advice/pointers/suggestions. Desperately out of ideas at the moment.
    regards,
    Compter Sez No!

    Hi,
According to your description, When you try to open a Microsoft Office document from a SharePoint 2010 site in a client application, the document opens slowly and you are prompted to enter your credentials multiple times.
This issue may be because of SharePoint Web Front End (WFE) server(s) has Antivirus software installed and the exceptions are not set correctly.
I recommend to remove the antivirus software or set the correct permissions for the antivirus software to resolve the issue.
To configure the antivirus exceptions, please follow the guidelines in the below articles:
    KB943620:
Folders to exclude when you perform a file-level antivirus scan on a server operating system.
    KB952167:
Certain folders may have to be excluded from antivirus scanning when you use a file-level antivirus program in SharePoint.
    KB943556:
Recommended file and folder exclusions for Microsoft Forefront Client Security or Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010.
    Best regards.

  • Upgrade for Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi Guys,
I am having an issue with upgrading one of our Servers. When I try to upgrade the Server it starts the process perfectly fine without any issues, it reboots and displays the Windows Server 2012 R2 Logo and then I get a black screen and it hangs. I waited
around 5 hours today before rebooting the Server and letting it rollback the changes that setup had made.
    Original Server Setup
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2
Other Applications: MS SQL Server 2012 with SP2
    Removed Applications: Symantec Backup Agen
    Hardware: Virtual Server ESXi 5.0
I have upgraded other servers without any issues but they haven't had SQL Server installed on them, so I am guessing that this is the issue but SQL Server 2012 sp2 is Supported by Windows Server 2012 R2. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Kind Regards,
    Thomas

    Hi All,
Yes we are running ESXi 5 U 2 I am looking at how much of a pain this will be to build a new VM for this database server, as it contains our Citrix database which we have had issues with in the past. I might end up just leaving this server for the moment
and move onto another server and hopefully not have any more issues.
Thank you all for your suggestions to resolving this issue.
    Kind Regards,
