Windows Server 2012 R2 - ADFS/Windows Network Load Balancing Converging Issue

Hello,
My name is Brandon. We have started upgrading our servers to Windows Server 2012 R2. We have some powerful servers for running ESXI 5.5 as the OS with the Guest Operating Systems as Windows Server 2012 R2. As far of our migrations/upgrades we have configured
ADFS 2012 R2 into a Server Farm with Windows Network Load Balancing to add redundancy in the event a server goes down.
I have been having issues with a Node with the Cluster getting stuck in the Status of Converging. The only way I have been able to get it back up is to restart the virtual server completely and it is temporary. When I first configure the Cluster the two
virtual servers get added to the Node with no problems and fully converge. However, after some time a node will end up in Converging and this takes Authentication for ADFS down as the nodes can not be contacted over Port 443.

I have tried using 1 & 2 Virtual NICs on the machines and still end up with communication issues. Could someone assist me with why I am having this issue? This is not an issue with a firewall. If it was a firewall it would never communicate the first
time. Has anyone had experience with a similar configuration and how were you able to make it work?
Below is my configuration.

Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that:2 ESXI 5.5 physical devices (192.168.0.5 and 192.168.0.6), each of them has a virtual WS 2012 R2(192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.20). Cluster the 2 virtual servers successfully, but they corrupt with event
ID 21, and a restart of virtual device will resolve this problem temporarily.
Event ID 21 means that NLB failed to converge due to inconsistencies in the port rules between this host and cluster host. This will occur if the number of port rules or the type of port rules are different between hosts.
Ensure that all NLB hosts have identical port rules. Detailed steps you may reference:

Thank you for your response. It took me a while to figure it out, but the whole issue was related to the type of Virtual Network Adapter I was selecting.
I changed the network adapter from E1000 to VMXNET 3 and have not had a single error in the event logs or Windows NLB.
I read somewhere that VMXNET 3 is preferred for Windows Server 2012 R2.

    1. Enabled the " Allow Remote Connections to this comptuter " in windows server 2012
    2. Disabled the firewall in Windows server 2012.
Can someone advice me on the below.
    1. How to RDP my windows server 2012 from my Windows 7 with " Firewall disabled" & "Firewall Enabled" conditions

    Hi,
Just make sure that the firewall is disabled in all three profiles Domain/Private/Public.
Create a incoming UDP rule on firewall to allow port 3389 and give a try.

    hello again,
meanwhile I was lucky to find this article about Idenity Mapping in TechNet in the Storage Team Blog:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/10/09/nfs-identity-mapping-in-windows-server-2012.aspx
Likely to be overseen at the end of one paragraph it says:
"Client for NFS does not support NFS V4.1 in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012"
Question : Is this an official statement and is it still valid with most recent
Windows Server 2012 R2 that NFS client does NOT support NFSv4.x  ??

I have been able to do this pn 2008 R2 like 100 times with no problems, hope someone can help plz
    Regards
    Thomas Pedersen

Aurimas... try the method I tried and let me know if it works for you...
To publish an Application that is available only on a Mapped Drive.
E.g. Sage Pro Application needs to run as T:\Pro73\sbtw.exe
We have to be aware that it may give an error sometimes because it tries accessing the IconPath variable and that needs to be on a local path "C:" or "D:"
We were successful in publishing the application by runnig the command twice in Powershell.
The first time it gave an error and the second time it published it successfully and also made it available on the RD Web Access:
    PS C:\Users\administrator.LAFE> New-RDRemoteApp -CollectionName QuickSessionCollection -
    DisplayName "SagePro200" -FilePath T:\PRO73\sbtw.exe -IconPath "C:\Windows\RemotePackages
    \CPubFarms\QuickSessionCollection\CPubRemoteApps\sbtw.ico"-UserGroups "lafe\citrix users"
Please note that it will show TWO SagePro200 RemoteApp Program names and the Aliases will be sbtw and sbtw(1), but only the later one will be visible online and workable.
You can always go back and 'unpublish' the extra RemoteAPP if you want to keep your interface clean.
    Hello,
I was able to publish remote app using this method, but I had to specify icon path in UNC as I was performing the publishing operation from
RDCB server and my guess is that it was looking for icon in "C:\windows\..\program.ico" on the
RemoteApp server where the icon did not exist. After specifying -iconpath as UNC
    \\RDCB\C$\windows\...\program.ico command was successful.

  • DirectAccess Client not connecting without error code on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1

    Hello,
we are currently migrating from Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 and are not able to get the new Direct Access Service up and running. Our goal is to establish DirectAccess connection for a handful of clients using the IPHTTPS-adapter on the default port 443.
    Errors:
There is actually no error showing up. It seems the infrastructure tunnel cannot be created but none of the IPv6-transition adapters is connecting (teredo and 6-to-4 are down) and the IPHTTPs adapter gives no informations about a problem:
    >Get-DAConnectionStatus
    Status    : Error
    Substatus : CouldNotContactDirectAccessServer
    >Get-NetIPHttpsState
    LastErrorCode   : 0x0
InterfaceStatus : Failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server; waiting to reconnect
    Setup:
Our setup is a virtualized Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard running on Hyper-V. It is located behind a NAT having the Port 443 mapped to the server. The only role installed after the basic install is RRAS including DirectAccess and VPN. The assistants completed
successfully (running the configuration for DirectAccess and VPN). Operation Status says everything is green und working (for multiple days in the meanwhile). A previous direct access installation (on a different machine running Windows Server 2012) has
been removed before installing the new server. The new installation is using a different router, so this might also be the cause of a problem.
The client is a Windows 8.1 notebook located outside the company network accessing the internet through another NAT-device. The client has been able to connect to the previous DirectAccess setup but has never been able to establish a connection after the
setup of the new Direct Access server. The device has no outbound constraints concerning the NAT-device and is only running the integrated Windows Firewall.
    Diagnosis:
So far I've done some basic DNS and connectivity checks. The DNS-name can be resolved correctly and the router even responds to pings. The port forward is working and HTTPs connections are generally possible (temporarily routed the port to
access the NLS-Website located on the server, which worked fine).
Network monitor shows that both computers are communicating, traffic on the expected Port 443 is incoming on the server and responses from the server reach the client.
Opening the IPHTTPs-url and in an endless page load. Sometime the browser page closes but I've never seen any result. Using telnet on the port shows that the server is accepting connections. I've even build a small test application that does a GET-Request
on the URL returning HTTP-200 and no content.
I'm currently running out of ideas what to do and since no error occurs this is kind of a bit frustrating. Any help appreciated.
    Regards
    Matthias

    Hi,
In addition, have you disabled the DA client components on the DA client? If no, please also check
the settings on the Name Resolution Policy Table.

In addition, error 0x4C9 means the remote computer refused the network connection. It may be due to the invalid

  • DirectAccess Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 - status connecting

I've successfully deployed DirectAccess on Windows Server 2012 R2 in a 2 node NLB cluster. Everything in the console is green and I can see clients connecting.
Windows 7 clients can connect and with the DirectAccess connectivity assistant installed show as connected and I can access resources.
On a Windows 8.1 client I can access resource and run the troubleshooting tool which reports no errors, but if I look at connections it shows as connecting and the status never changes to connected. Clients work correctly when on the internal network.
I've looked at available hotfixes, but not found anything for when the status is incorrectly shown.
Any ideas before I raise a support call?

  • How can I upgrade Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

I have just installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials on my Home Network (from the installation DVD).  I have done absolutely no  configuration  Installing Server 2012 was an oversight;  I meant to install Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
I tried to correct by installing R2 from its DVD, hoping it would do an upgrade.  That didn't work.
Is there a simple way to make it possible to install the correct OS?   For example, can I just demote the existing server and remove any roles that were installed, so that the R2 disk will install over top of the existing installation?
Alternatively, is it safe to just reformat the partition and install R2?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn408635.aspx seems to imply that this is OK.
    David Pike, P.Eng, MCITP

Hi Larry.   Thanks for the reply.  It didn't work, but I don't believe you are wrong.  Rather I think there is something weird in my system.  I'm marking your reply as answer.
Some background:  I'm repurposing an older PC (Compaq SR1614X) as a home server, to manage my home network, use as a gateway to my Azure server, and to help my Server 2012 training (on MVA).  I've been messing with it for nearly two months,
on and off.  From the start, I've had trouble installing the server 2012 software (see previous threads August-27 and August-16
), but when I got to the point that I could install Server 2012 Essentials, I thought I could upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Essentials exactly as you suggest.  That was where you helped me a lot, i.e. you confirmed that my expectations were reasonable.
So when it didn't work, I spent most of yesterday trying various different procedures.   I got tantalizingly close, but still no cigar.
I can install any Windows Client and Server 2012 Essentials, but the R2 Essentials installation never finishes; it goes into an "error 0x000000C4" boot loop.  At first I wondered if it was because I was installing a server over a
server, but you confirmed that's not the issue.  I later verified that I cannot install R2 over Windows 7 either, whereas R1 over Win7 is fine.  I can only surmise one of two problems:
I have a bad installation disk
    There is a hardware issue
I plan to eliminate (1) by creating a new disk from a new download.  I have verified that the latest ISO file and the one I have been using have identical byte counts,
For (2), I had suspected that the problem was that the older system has no UEFI, but since R1 installs OK, I am discounting that.  Today's effort:  to eliminate the DVD drive, I will try booting from a Flash Drive.  To eliminate
the hard drive, I will try installing to a different drive.
I am hoping you can help with one more thing.  When I run setup.exe with the /noreboot option, I have a better chance of success.  The option suppresses the first reboot only, but that one (after "Expanding the setup files") always
fails, so suppressing it gets me almost to the end of the install.  Is there a way to modify setup.exe so the it always runs with the /noreboot option?

Yes.  That's how I got used to the OS before it was released.  I had my 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V host and installed Windows Server 2012 virtual machines.
However, do note that it is not listed as a supported operating system by Microsoft -

  • Downgrade Windows Server 2012 License to WIndows Server 2008 R2

    Hi all,
I'm looking to downgrade a windows server 2012 open license to windows server 2008 r2.
Thing is i do not have an existing windows server 2008 r2 VLK.
Can anyone confirm that this downgrade is possible, as clearinghouse is not helping by telling me that i can't buy windows server 2008 r2 licenses

Clearinghouse is right in stating you can't buy Windows Server 2008 R2
    licenses anymore.
You'll need a Windows Server 2008 R2 disk kit and product key. They'll sell those to you, since you already own a license that allows you to install and use the software as part of your Windows Server 2012 license.

    Hi,
We have a Windows 2008 domain, and now we need to configure IE 10 options, so we have to import the Windows 8 / 2012 ADMX files. Can we just do the following:
    1. Download
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36991
    2. Unzip it and copy the .admx files to c:\Windows\Sysvol\<domain>\policies and create a directory called policydefinitions
    3. Then just re-open Group Policy Management ?
Correct way or not? Will this have any implication on network or any old GPO.

Is anyone running a cluster which has Datacenter 2012 clustered with either Standard 2012 or Hyper-V 2012?
I have seen posts here and elsewhere that say it is possible but when I rang Microsoft Licencing team to discuss licensing in this scenario they advised me that the hardware and OS on each clustered server must be identical.
    Now I'm really confused.
    Thanks,

  • Network Load balancing for Server 2003 and Server 2012

Our environment currently has 2 web servers running Windows Server 2003 with Network Load Balancing.  We are looking to update the servers to Windows Server 2012.  Is it possible to add Windows Server 2012 into the Windows Server 2003 Network Load
balancing cluster?  This way we could bring up 2 new servers add them into the network load balancing and then take out the 2003 servers without disrupting our production.
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to make this work properly?

    Hi,
You can upgrade an existing Network Load Balancing (NLB) cluster to Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012 by taking the entire cluster offline
and upgrading all the hosts, or you can leave the NLB cluster online and perform a rolling upgrade. A rolling upgrade entails taking individual cluster hosts offline one at a time, upgrading each host, and returning the host to the cluster. You continue upgrading
individual cluster hosts until the entire cluster is upgraded. A rolling upgrade allows the cluster to continue running during the upgrade.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - iSCSI SAN - All Hyper-V Guests stops responding and extensive disk read/write

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.
    Our setup:
Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.
HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to Virtual Machines and Management, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage. - This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM, 1 NIC dedicated to Virtual Machines and Management, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage. - This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched of.
    iSCSI SAN:
    QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.
    Switch:
DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.
    Virtual Machines:
    3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
    Updates
We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, WMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.
    Normal operation
Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with 2 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally
we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair
    Our Problem
Our problem is that for some reason all of the VMs stops responding or responds very slowly and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
Symptoms (i.e. this happens, or does not happen, at the same time)
I we look at resource monitor on the host then we see that there is often an extensive read from a VHDX of one of the VMs (40-60 Mbyte/s) and a combined write speed to many files in \HarddiskVolume5\System Volume Information\{<someguid and no file extension>}.
    See iamge below.
The combined network speed to the iSCSI SAN is about 500-600 Mbit/s.
When this happens it is usually during and after a VSS ShadowCopy backup, but has also happens during hours where no backup should be running (i.e. during daytime when the backup has finished hours ago according to the log files). There is however
not that extensive writes to the backup file that is created on an external hard drive and this does not seem to happen during all backups (we have manually checked a few times, but it is hard to say since this error does not seem leave any traces in event
    viewer).
We cannot find any indication that the VMs themself detect any problem and we see no increase of errors (for example storage related errors) in the eventlog inside the VMs.
The QNAP uses about 50% processing Power on all cores.
We see no dropped packets on the switch.
(I have split the image to save horizontal space).
Unable to recreate the problem / find definitive trigger
We have not succeeded in recreating the problem manually by, for instance, running chkdsk or defrag in VM and Hosts, copy and remove large files to VMs, running CPU and Disk intensive operations inside a VM (for instance scan and repair a database file).
    Questions
Why does all VMs stop responding and why is there such intensive Read/Writes to the iSCSI SAN?
Could it be anything in our setup that cannot handle all the read/write requests? For instance the iSCSI SAN, the hosts, etc?
What can we do about this? Should we use MultiPath IO instead of NIC teaming to the SAN, limit bandwith to the SAN, etc?

    Hi,
    > All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
If this is a testing environment, it’s okay, but if this a production environment, it’s not recommended. Fixed VHDs are recommended for production instead of dynamically expanding or differencing VHDs.
Hyper-V: Dynamic virtual hard disks are not recommended for virtual machines that run server workloads in a production environment

    > This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
According to your posting, we know that you have Cluster Shared Volumes in the Hyper-V cluster, but why not distribute your VMs into two Hyper-V hosts.

    > 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage.
Use Microsoft MultiPath IO (MPIO) to manage multiple paths to iSCSI storage. Microsoft does not support teaming on network adapters that are used to connect to iSCSI-based storage devices. (At least it’s not supported until Windows Server 2008 R2. Although
Windows Server 2012 has built-in network teaming feature, I don’t article which declare that Windows Server 2012 network teaming support iSCSI connection)

    > I have seen using MPIO suggests using different subnets, is this a requirement for using MPIO
    > or is this just a way to make sure that you do not run out of IP adressess?
What I found is: if it is possible, isolate the iSCSI and data networks that reside on the same switch infrastructure through the use of VLANs and separate subnets. Redundant network paths from the server to the storage system via MPIO will maximize availability
and performance. Of course you can set these two NICs in separate subnets, but I don’t think it is necessary.
    > Why should it be better to not have dedicated wireing for iSCSI and Management?
It is recommended that the iSCSI SAN network be separated (logically or physically) from the data network workloads. This ‘best practice’ network configuration optimizes performance and reliability.
Check that and modify cluster configuration, monitor it and give us feedback for further troubleshooting.
