Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Setup

Hi guy,
I am a student and I am currently in my second year of study for my Computing degree. I have recently installed Windows Server 2012 R2 with Essentials. This has been the first time I have done so and the reason being when I graduate I would like to get into
networking as my career path. So I thought what is a better way of getting one step ahead of the competition and also I do have access to a lot of free Microsoft Premium softwares.
So the problem I am having is I have installed the OS and I have a hell of a lot of red flags on my dashboard. The sole purpose for me wanting to set this server up is so that I can have access to Ubuntu as a VM & run my own cloud service, and access
all my files no matter what part of the world I am in. I have no technical no how in regards to the Windows Server OS, I have managed to make some steps forward but I do not think I am heading in the right direction in regards to the final goal. I have searched
all over the internet for step-by-step guides on how to step the whole thing up but I have had no luck. Can anyone please help me???

Hi there ,nice posts by some geeks on the forums but people fail to acknowledge undertand that its very tough to install and start your windows server 2012 up and running.
I am a medc and i am pure techno buff,i opted for windows server 2012 r2 essentials over nas server because i wanted to see how this works out.
But a week has gone by and still not able to figure out the conflicts and actually speaking the way to solve my errors on the dashboard.
The pc world itself is haywire ,with no proper set og guidelines or a step by step tutorial with troubleshooting at each step.
Huhh,i dont know how i will sort out my prolem but surely i will make my server run,no matter what.
Guess i cant learn computing in a hurry.
But thinking why people never had Windows home server ,y it didnt become popular,Powerful it might be but ,no documentatin r guides makes it even more distant reality for people with even abov avg computer knowledge.
By the way what can b the cause of repeated errors with DNS and error saying ,ou have multiplerouters,Nt configured correctly, this server is not connected to the internet although i have an active internet connection with browser,
One thing i noted as that when i opened the adaptor properties,it says ipv4,ipv6 no internet acces?
I think that might e the problem.
Can anyone have a workaround or a link to properly manage each step of running the server from scratch.
I ven changed my modem for a new one wth upnp feature.still the ruter cant be configured.
one more thing i want to ask whether i shuld run he router attched to the modem as in AP mode or router mode.
AP mode sets the router to ip of 192.168.1.1 which come in conflict with the modem.
and i cant access the control ui of the modem with that mode, even my router doesnt accepts the admin user and password with that mode.

  • Upgrading Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval to Windows Server 2012 R2 Retail

I need to upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval version to Windows Server 2012 R2 Retail.  What would be the easiest way to upgrade if license $$ is not an issue? The Server is a DC.  Would the following works:
    1. Upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval to Windows Server 2012 Essential Retail
    2. Do a conversion from Windows Server 2012 Essential Retail to Windows Server 2012 Standard Retail (I suppose this just require several command line to enable the 2012 Standard)
    3. Do an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Standard to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (there is no need to do migration, am I right?)
    Thanks.

I just did a simulation using Hyper V.  It seems that I'm able to do the upgrade sequence as described but I'm not sure whether there are any side effect that not yet surface out.  Here is the details steps that I took:
    1. Under Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval
convert the Windows Server Essential 2012 Eval to Windows Server Standard 2012 using the following command in an elevated command prompot
    dism /online /set-edition:ServerStandard /productkey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx /accepteula
press "y" and return to restart as prompted
the productkey could be retail key or the KMS client keys (just for installation not for activiation)
    2. After reboot, the system become Windows Server 2012 Standard
    using admin account to login
add admin account to the Enterprise Admins group and Schema Admins group if not already done so, logout and login again
mount the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard disk in, say, drive d:
in an elevated command prompt, go the following:
    cd d:\support\adprep
    .\adprep.exe /forestprep
    .\adprep.exe /domainprep
double click on d: in explore to run the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard setup
follow the instruction to complete the in-place upgrade from Windos Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2
    3. After reboot into Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, go to the charms bar, select setting -> server info, it will mention the server is not activated, click on Activate Windows and key in the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard retail key

I have installed .Net Framework 3.5, 4.0 and Windows Identity Foundation using Add server roles or features from the server manager.
From Software & Hardware requirements for SharePoint 2013 give
Prerequisites for SharePoint 2013 I can see that the identity extensions are available only of Windows Server 2008 R2 and not for windows server 2012. Can you please provide the link for windows server 2012?

I fixed it by installing Microsoft Identity extensions from command line, please find command line below.
    C:\Windows\System32>msiexec.exe /i "C:\SharePoint2013ServerFiles\prerequisiteinstallerfiles\MicrosoftIdentityExtensions-64.msi" /quiet /norestart
Note: In the above command C:\SharePoint2013ServerFiles\prerequisiteinsTallerfiles is the path where I had downloaded all the prerequisites for SP2013
This will install Microsoft Identity Extensions and creates registry entries, which will help the SharePoint 2013 Prerequisite installer to complete the setup

I also tried changing both machines to bridged connection, no luck, as well as NAT connection, still no luck.

Can you elaborate on the question a bit? You're asking how we setup LVM on a Windows Server, but that depends a lot on what the server is for.

  • Trying to install a setup on a 64 bit machine with Windows server 2012 R2 which writes to registry FAILES

My msi is a 32 bit setup.
When I install it on a 32 bit machine with Windows XP it works fine .
I tried to install it on a 64 bit machine with windows server 2008 and it succeeds
While running my setup on a 64 bit machine with Windows server 2012 R2 it failes and I get the folloawing message:
"Registry object reference not set to an instance of an object"
Then the setup exits and leaves the app partially installed
I tried searching for known problems over the net, but found nothing
I will be happy to get some advice
    Thanks
    Liora

Sounds like you are trying to update a registry object that is not there.
Is this your own msi, or is it from a third party application?  If third party, check with them to see if they support it on 2012 or if they have a known workaround.
If it is your own msi, sounds like it is time to debug it.

  • Adobe Update Server Setup Tool on Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8 ?

can you help me install and configure my internal AUSST on the new server OS provided by Microsoft (Windows Server 2012)?
What should be the parameters required (or mandatory) in IIS 8 (ISAPI Filters, etc ...) ?
What parameters in the installation of IIS should be chosen?
What are the steps necessary to implement this new operating system?

Our enterprise also uses an authenticated proxy, so I've been banging my head to get this working!
I'm surprise to learn of this proxy oversight!  This tool has "enterprise" all over the documentation (e.g. AAMEE?).  There's good likelihood that other enterprises (still) have proxies in place.  Makes me wonder if the CreativeCloud architects had this same proxy-ignorant oversite?
    @Abhishek
Can you pass this request onto Jody Rogers or Karl Gibson (or whomever "owns" Adobe Enterprise Deployment products)?
I can pass the following curl switches and get out of our authenticated proxy; why can't you make AdobeUpdateServerSetupTool2.0 honor these curl options?
[Note: this example assumes Mac OS X or other Unix-y OSes]
    curl --proxy myproxy.domain.com:port --proxy-user ADserviceAccount http://swupmf.adobe.com/webfeed/oobe/aam10/win/updaterfeed.xml
BTW: why does "mac" in xml feed return so much more info?
    curl --proxy myproxy.domain.com:port --proxy-user ADserviceAccount http://swupmf.adobe.com/webfeed/oobe/aam10/mac/updaterfeed.xml

  • Cannot get db mail to work via SMTP Relay for Office 365 in SQL Server 2014 on Windows Server 2012 R2

Our company recently moved to Office 365 which mean our on premise exchange server went away as well with the move.  I am trying to configure my new sql server (OS-Windows Server 2012 R2, DBMS- SQL 2014 Std Edtion).  After some searching I found
this article (http://blogs.technet.com/b/meamcs/archive/2013/02/25/how-to-configure-sql-database-mail-so-send-emails-using-office-365-exchange-online-a-walkthrough.aspx) and have followed these steps exactly, but to no avail.  I did some further research
on the SMTP relay I setup and found a way to test it (listed here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn592151(v=exchg.150).aspx at the bottom of the article).  If I drop the email.txt file in the pickup folder, it gets sent out no problem.
I have configured my db email exactly as describe here(http://blogs.technet.com/b/meamcs/archive/2013/02/25/how-to-configure-sql-database-mail-so-send-emails-using-office-365-exchange-online-a-walkthrough.aspx).  But keep getting an unable to connect
to SMTP server error.  I have even tried completely shutting down firewall to see if that is the issue and multiple restarts.  Any ideas how to get this to work on Office 365?

The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 2 (2014-06-10T22:28:41). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (Failure sending mail.).

    Hi,
I followed this blog and got the below error message in the Database Mail Log.
“The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 2 (2014-06-11T19:34:00). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay
    for [email protected]).”
If you are getting the same error message, you can try the below steps to resolve the issue.
    1. Open the IIS 6.0 management console. Right click on the SMTP server and open the properties window.
    2. Click on the Access tab, click Relay button under Relay restrictions. loopback IP address (i.e 127.0.0.1).
Then the email should be sent out from Database Mail without problem.
    Thanks.

I have a Windows Server 2012 setup with SQL 2012 SP1 installed.  I have tried to install Sharepoint Foundation 2013 and also full blown Sharepoint version...but during the wizard setup I always get 'Cannot find the object 'proc_createNewAppSiteDomainIds',
because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
The install created my db in sql 'team1p-vm' but that is it.
    What am I missing?
During the install I have tried both Complete and Stand-alone as the Server Type.
When it gets to the product configuration wizard I use:
    Create a new server farm
I enter my database server name: team1p-vm
    Database name: SharePoint_Config
I enter my db access account
I enter a farm security settings passphrase
I use 17012 as my port number, select NTLM
    I see my configuration settings...
Click Next and I get the error on task 3 of 10.
here is the dump of the application Log: At least some of it.
An exception of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was thrown.  Additional exception information: Cannot find the object 'proc_createNewAppSiteDomainIds', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Cannot find the object 'proc_createNewAppSiteDomainIds', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.

Can you see if there is anything in the SQL ERRORLOG on the SQL Server that may help at the time you see this error?
Does your user account (the user you're installing SharePoint with) have the sysadmin fixed role in SQL Server?

  • Why does my Cisco router firewall block Windows Server 2012 traffic, but not Windows Server 2008 traffic?

    Hello,
I run a small business network with five physical servers: three Dell servers running Windows Server 2008 R2, one custom build running 2008, and another custom build running 2012 with Domain Controller Role (same hardware for both custom builds).
The Dell servers are all running the Hyper-V role and each has a number of 2008 VMs.  I also have a 2012 VM with the Domain Controller Role on one of the Hyper-V servers and another VM with a completely base install of 2012.
All servers are plugged into a Cisco SG300-52 switch which is uplinked to a Cisco 881 router which is connected to a cable TWC provided Ubee cable modem.  I have no VLANs setup.  I do have the Firewall on the router configured
    to inspect most traffic.
Here is my problem:  I cannot connect to most of the internet on ANY 2012 server (and all exhibit the exact same behavior), but I have NO problems connecting to the internet from 2008 servers.  Here is what I already know:
1.) I can ping the outside world just fine so ICMP is passing to any external host.
2.) Two of the 2012 servers are DCs running DNS services and they can connect to the internet just fine for DNS requests because they are doing a perfectly good job of providing DNS services to my network.
3.) Here's where it gets really weird: I can browse in internet explorer to Bing.com and it works.  I can also go to a couple other Microsoft websites (though they are very slow).  If I click on any link in Bing, however, it doesn't
work and gives me a page not available error.  If I connect to a non-MS website like Google or my company website, I get page not available.
4.) I have tried to telnet to port 80 at Bing and it works.  I have tried to telnet to port 80 at google.com and it won't connect.  The 2008 servers have no issue telneting to either bing or google on port 80 and none of my client
PCs on the network do either.
5.) Windows Update will not connect and neither will any other update service such as AVG (I have AVG Antivirus installed WITHOUT firewall on two of the three servers. The base 2012 VM has no software installed and no roles...I built it
just to see if it could connect after a fresh install and it still cannot.)
6.) The network connection does not indicate limited connectivity (probably because ICMP appears to be passing successfully)
7.) If I connect the server directly to the modem it has full internet access.
8.) All internal LAN connectivity is perfectly fine and runs at full speed.
9.) I have scoured the internet trying to find other examples of this particular kind of connectivity issue on 2012 and I have found two TechNet articles that are similar, but they both had the same resolution: changing the router
worked, but no one knows why. (I would have included the links, but apparently I cannot do that yet)
My question is this: What is different about Windows Server 2012 networking that would render it unable to communicate through a router that Windows Server 2008 has no problems with?  I ask because, unlike in these two articles where they were
running personal networking equipment they could easily upgrade, I'm running a Cisco 881 with what should be virtually limitless configuration options and I have no desire to replace it.  I have to assume the issue is somehow related to the firewall configuration,
which I could fix easily, but I don't know what to change.  If anyone knows what changed in 2012 and why I would be able to browse to bing and other MS sites but no where else, please pass them along.  Thanks.

the internet connectivity issue that this whole post was about in the first place.

  • Windows Server Backup scheduled task run successfully but backup do not start (not running) on Windows Server 2012

    Hi,
A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).
It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.
The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!
Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?
    Here is what we know:
When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.
When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe
start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.
If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.
The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':
    schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".
Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...
No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...
If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).
Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Once again, the issue is not to run the backup manually from the command line but to have it run via the scheduled task setup by the Windows Backup software.
By default, the schedule task is to be run as NT Authority\System, and when run under this account, the backup does not start (even though account is member of Backup Operators) and job can manually be run via elevated command prompt. This is not a normal
behavior and constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012.
From my understanding the NT Authority\System account is a built-in account from Windows that should by default be part of the Administrators group (built-in) even though it does not explicitly appears like it in AD by default.
This account shall have by default Administrators rights and Backup Operators rights (via the Administrators group) without being explicitly added to those groups (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/ms684190%28v=vs.85%29.aspx). By design
it is supposed to be the most powerful account which has unrestricted access to all local system resources. If that is not the case (as it seems) then this would constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012 edition.
As said previously and as you confirmed, currently by default NT Authority\System on Windows 2012 server cannot start backup manually via an elevated command prompt unless it is manually added to Backup Operators (or Administrators) group. But wouldn't that
constitute a bug of Windows Server 2012?
Our server has not yet been restarted since I added NT Authority\System account to the Administrators group explicitly manually so I cannot yet confirmed it would sort the issue. Indeed it is heavily in use so cannot easily be restarted. Will confirm when
    done.
We also have an additional problem where after a while of last reboot, part of the Exchange ECP can no longer be properly loaded in the web browser due to compilation error (compilation is done via NT Authority\System account which seems to no longer have
sufficient right to compile .NET code). What is strange is that it works at first and then stop working at some point... I am hopeful that adding NT Authority\System to the Administrators group would sort this issue as well but once again, that shall not be
    needed!!!
Could a Windows Server 2012 update introduced some security policy changes or else that prevent NT Authority\System to have full power?

  • DirectAccess Client not connecting without error code on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1

    Hello,
we are currently migrating from Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 and are not able to get the new Direct Access Service up and running. Our goal is to establish DirectAccess connection for a handful of clients using the IPHTTPS-adapter on the default port 443.
    Errors:
There is actually no error showing up. It seems the infrastructure tunnel cannot be created but none of the IPv6-transition adapters is connecting (teredo and 6-to-4 are down) and the IPHTTPs adapter gives no informations about a problem:
    >Get-DAConnectionStatus
    Status    : Error
    Substatus : CouldNotContactDirectAccessServer
    >Get-NetIPHttpsState
    LastErrorCode   : 0x0
InterfaceStatus : Failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server; waiting to reconnect
    Setup:
Our setup is a virtualized Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard running on Hyper-V. It is located behind a NAT having the Port 443 mapped to the server. The only role installed after the basic install is RRAS including DirectAccess and VPN. The assistants completed
successfully (running the configuration for DirectAccess and VPN). Operation Status says everything is green und working (for multiple days in the meanwhile). A previous direct access installation (on a different machine running Windows Server 2012) has
been removed before installing the new server. The new installation is using a different router, so this might also be the cause of a problem.
The client is a Windows 8.1 notebook located outside the company network accessing the internet through another NAT-device. The client has been able to connect to the previous DirectAccess setup but has never been able to establish a connection after the
setup of the new Direct Access server. The device has no outbound constraints concerning the NAT-device and is only running the integrated Windows Firewall.
    Diagnosis:
So far I've done some basic DNS and connectivity checks. The DNS-name can be resolved correctly and the router even responds to pings. The port forward is working and HTTPs connections are generally possible (temporarily routed the port to
access the NLS-Website located on the server, which worked fine).
Network monitor shows that both computers are communicating, traffic on the expected Port 443 is incoming on the server and responses from the server reach the client.
Opening the IPHTTPs-url and in an endless page load. Sometime the browser page closes but I've never seen any result. Using telnet on the port shows that the server is accepting connections. I've even build a small test application that does a GET-Request
on the URL returning HTTP-200 and no content.
I'm currently running out of ideas what to do and since no error occurs this is kind of a bit frustrating. Any help appreciated.
    Regards
    Matthias

    Hi,
In addition, have you disabled the DA client components on the DA client? If no, please also check
the settings on the Name Resolution Policy Table.

  • Overlapped I/O error 997 installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2014 Express on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. When I do the install, it fails (several times) with an "Error: 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.". From searching the web, I can see many people
have had this problem with this installer and other non-SQL server installers.
I've tried every solution I can find discussed, but none help with my problems The system is fully updated, with the exception of the KB2538243 (VC 2008 SP1 redist), which is probably failing for the same reason.
I've tried removing several updates mentioned in other articles (KB2918614). I've confirmed that I'm not using a temporary profile.
Does anyone have an idea of how I can solve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Zack
