Windows Server - Mac Client Permission Issues?

To start off, I'll summarize our current set-up. We've got
Contribute Publishing Server running on Windows Server 2003. We
have numerous Contribute clients spread out over our campus.
They've all been using Windows XP. They connect via the LDAP
settings in Active Directory. We're using Local/Network as our
connection method. We have been encountering no difficulties using
the software in this manner... at least until we tried installing
the software on a Mac.
We've currently tried two different Macs. The one in my
office is OS X 10.4.9. I have successfully installed Contribute on
it. The way we've been making people connect to our server is via
Connection Keys. We learned that we could not use our old
Connection Key, since it was created on a Windows platform. So,
instead, I begin the process of setting up a manual connection.
I enter our URL (we've actually been using an
http://SERVERNAME address with
Contribute) and tell it to connect to a Website. I enter
Local/Network. I specify the mounted drive which appears as WWWROOT
in the text box. I click Continue. Now it has me log in after
telling me that the server is managed by CPS. It synchronizes some
templates, which look kind of odd as it does so. In the file name
listings as it works I see some ASP code. Not sure why, but it
finishes and I see that our website has a connection established.
I click the website name. It takes me to the home page. A bar
appears at the top of the page. "You don't have permission to edit
this page." Wait... what? I have full permission to edit everything
when I log in elsewhere. In fact, on this Mac, every single page
says this. I refresh the page and now it says "Contribute has
disabled your connection to this website because an unknown error
occurred." Hmm. I click the New button at the top... and I don't
have access to any of the website's templates. In fact, I can't
create anything. I hit the Connect button and it tells me "Access
Denied. The file may not exist or there could be a permission
problem."
I'm at a loss for words. How/why could this be happening?
Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried creating the connection by manually inputting
all appropriate info? We gave up on the keys awhile ago.

On Server B I can only RDP from Windows 7 clients and Windows XP Clients NOT from Windows Server 2003 Clients). The error is"The remote session was disconnected because the remote computer received an invalid licensing message from this computer"

    Hi Gyan,
Which version of client RDP you are using in your environment?
Did you receive any particular Event ID during this issue?
Here for your issue I found something to let u know, if licensing mode on the terminal server is set to Per Device but the license server is configured to issue only Per User CALs, then only temporary Per Device licenses are issued from the available pool of
    licenses. The license cannot upgraded.
Please check the license is properly configured and activated. If not then you can contact MS clearing house or try to change the terminal server licensing mode.
Please refer below link for more information.

  • Windows Server Mac networking issues

    Hi all,
I recently moved to a new office where internet access is provided via a Windows Server network.
I use a Macbook and am having the following issues whilst using the internet:
    - When I attempt to FTP a file, the first time I do it it always hangs. If I immediately try to upload the same file it works fine.
    - The first time I send an email it bounces back, the second time it works just fine.
    - If I try to post a comment on a website (or add new content on our site via a custom CMS) the first time I do it it doesn't work, the second time it's fine!!
These issues are driving me crazy, does anybody have any idea as to what the cause maybe? Does anybody know how I can find out more about the specific network set up via the terminal or cmd prompt on the pc next to me? I've tried asking people in the office but the tech support is non existent
    Cheers,
    Woody

    Hi Charles,
Thanks for your help with this... I've tried connecting via ethernet and via two wireless access points that are all connected to the same network but the issues still persist. Would this suggest that the problem is something to do with the actual server software configuration itself?
Ooh, yes. That's a server problem. You're not going to have the same connectivity issue with different wired and wireless connections, and we've already established that DHCP and DNS are good. (It could still be an intermittent DHCP or DNS issue. Does anyone else have problems?)
A temporary solution for me at the mo is to join someone elses open wireless network in my area but it has really bad reception
    What is your prognosis?!
I went looking on Microsoft TechNet (a great resource for problems with MS software) and got this: <http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/ecc10b32-898a-435f-9d5c -01c25fb4d1f61033.mspx?mfr=true>. Do you have a domain or a workgroup configuration? If a domain, is your Mac set up in their AD Users & Computers settings? Also, is RADIUS configured properly? And what are the GPOs on their system?
Also, what kind of Windows server is in use? WinNT Server, W2K Server, and W2K3 Server are all different beasts... and there are different flavors of each, especially W2K3 server.

We are using terminal server with Windows Server 2012 R2. Our users are using Windows 7 Embedded thin clients with MSTSC RDP 8.0. We are using network printers.
There is problem with printing from Adobe Reader. We are using Adobe Reader 11.0.06. • Windows to Mac DHCP Migration Issues

We are migrating our DHCP and DNS services from a Windows server to an XServe. We have started the process and noticed that Server Admin does not provide a place in the DHCP service to put in a range of IP addresses to be excluded from being handed out. It only lets you do it on a individual computer basis. The problem is that we have over a hundred devices on our network with static IPs right in the middle of the IP range set for DHCP. (I inherited this design) Eg:
    Complete DHCP Range: 192.168.180.1 - 192.168.181.254
    Static IP Ranges: 192.168.181.1 - 192.168.181.100, 192.168.181.200-229, 250-254 etc
The DHCP service on our Windows DC has a place to put in multiple ranges that can be excluded from DHCP so it is easy to define the complete range of our network and exclude ranges used for static IPs. I just don't see how to do this in OS 10.6. If it is not there on purpose then what is the logic behind this?
The other issue we are having with DHCP is that the DORA exchange for client computers is taking almost 2 minutes to complete. Is this normal for DHCP in OS 10.6? I can take the same client laptop, pull out the ethernet cable and plug it into the existing Windows network and get an IP address in 45 seconds. We did this test with multiple new computers and they all took the same amount of time. There are no errors in the DHCP log.
Any perspective for either issue would be greatly appreciated.

this may not be directly helpful, but i have two related questions.
if you've inherited these ranges, is there anything particular preventing you from changing them to make your life easier?
if you're swapping these services to os x server, why, and would this be a good opportunity to change the ranges?
in any of my clients' networks 45 seconds to get an address would be atypically long. there must be something else going on to cause such delays.
what's the impetus to move dhcp and dns away from windows servers, especially if the services are working well enough?
i wouldn't necessarily recommend using os x server just for these services. any linux distro with dhcpd and bind will do just fine and probably be a better investment.

  • Drivers for Windows Server 2008 and HDD issues

Recently I have had the hard drive with my OS fail. After replacing the hard drive and reinstalling windows server 2008 I seem to have run into a few issues with drivers.  After insalling Windows, I had 3 items in my device manager that did not install properly. I was able to get the driver for the LAN port to work but I have not gotten the driver for "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and "SM Bus Controller". After a little research, I believe the video card is a Radeon HD4350. With that information I still have been unable toinstlal the correct drivers for either of these items. I've tried several drivers listed on the drivers support page on HP's website but all fo them return the same error about not finding the correct Operating System. The link to the driver I used originally on my previous installation seems to not be valid any longer.
Also I can't seem to access the two additoinal hard drives (connected by sata). They were used with the previous installation of windows with no issues. They appear in the device manager but do not show up under My Computer. A removeable drive does show up that I'm not sure what it is. Previously I had used software to mirror one of the drives onto the other as to prevent losing data if a drive would fail. Is one of the above drives causing the issue with not being able to access the drives or did the software used before cause the problem?
Any help on these issues is greatly appreciated.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    OK.
I can't help you with the drives then.  That is out of my realm of knowledge.  If they are marked healthy and active in the disk management utility, then that is all I know that they should be indicated.
    As for the graphics driver...
Download and install this free file utility.
    http://www.7-zip.org/
After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file and select 7-zip from the list of options.
Select 7-zip to Extract to: and let it extract the file into a folder.  I let it extract to the file name of the folder.
Then just follow the rest of my instructions to install the driver.
Of course you will first browse to where 7-zip has extracted the folder to, and proceed from there.

  • "Network Error - 53" while trying to mount NFS share in Windows Server 2008 client

    CentOS | Windows 2008
I've got a CentOS 5.5 server running nfsd. On the Windows side, I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have the "Files Services" server role enabled and both Client for NFS and Server for NFS are on.
I'm able to successfully connect/mount to the CentOS NFS share from other linux systems but am experiencing errors connecting to it from Windows. When I try to connect, I get the following:
    C:\Users\fooadmin>mount -o anon 10.10.10.10:/share/ z:
    Network Error - 53
Type 'NET HELPMSG 53' for more information.
(IP and share name have been changed to protect the innocent :-) )
    Additional information:
I've verified low-level network connectivity between the Windows client and the NFS server with telnet (to the NFS on TCP/2049) so I know the port is open. I've further confirmed that inbound and outbound firewall ports are present and enabled.
    I came across a
Microsoft tech note that suggested changing the "Provider Order" so "NFS Network" is above other items like Microsoft Windows Network. I changed this and restarted the NFS client - no luck.
I've confirmed that the share folder on the NFS server is readable/writable by all (777)
I've tried other variations of the mount command like: mount 10.10.10.10:/share/ z: and
    mount 10.10.10.10:/share z: and mount -o anon mtype=hard \\10.10.10.10:/share * No luck.
As per the command output, I tried typing NET HELPMSG 53 but that doesn't tell me much. Just "The network path was not found".
I'm lost on how to proceed with troubleshooting. Any ideas?

There are usully two aspect that come to mind:
    1. Syntax of mount command
    2. Mismatch of NFS versions
    Third reason is here

After searching in the FIM DB we have found the mentioned object_id and this is a group. There is permission issue, so the error message.
But the user have all permissions in AD, so it could not be the problem.
After DIDS and one more Export there is no more stopped-server and the error message is now "dn-attributes-failure".
It is also very strange, that we cannot see import updates by doing FI!
We also found that the problem occurs when adding/removing user in an AD security group(add or remove member in the group object).
Does anybody had same/similar problems and knows any solution?
    Thanks a lot!
    Kind regards
    Stoyan

Seen this issue with my step up.
Was done in any other environment ? like test ? or this is test ?
For me , test was fine but issues were in prod and AD was major impact. so comparing all Dlls versions (should be updated to latest).
Found that on prod some of the DLL were not updated to latest FIM version. Replace them with test or install source resolved the issue.

  • VPS windows server 2008r2 RDP security issue, need help!

system: VPS windows server 2008r2 at a remote location, directly exposed to internet
Administration is possible only via Remote
    Desktop.
I cannot disable&replace the default administrator account with a different username...which means I get a lot of brute force attacks.
I created rules in the firewall to limit the scope of the remote IP addresses, even limited the scope of the RDP rules down to my client IP address only.I tested the rules by trying to
access the vps server from a wifi hotspot (starbucks was useful for once) and indeed I was not to rdp into myserver.
Yet I still find Nigerian , chinese taiwanese iranian and so on based IP addresses in the event log under audit failures.
I didn't want to limit the ip scope, because if my ISP changed my IP address ,I'd lose access to my VPS server... then again, why are the Nigerians still getting in?
    Anyway,
is there a way to replace the username and password login with a public/private key method like it is under Linux? Or perhaps is there a better solution?
    Hope someone can help.
    Thank you in advance!
    Paolo

So, your suggestion gave me an idea.
First I discovered why the Nigerians could keep getting in....a rule for utorrent opened everything...! That rule is gone now.
The idea is as following: lock the RDP to the one ip address I use but install a SSH server open to any IP address that mandates key pair based logon only, using a public/private key pair that I only obviously have.
Brute force will never work on a key pair only login shell. Let them
try it if they want. (Assuming nobody manages to crack my home network and steal my files :-)
If my ISP changes my ipaddress, I can login via SSH and modify the firewall rule (which I tested already).
Of course this works for people like me who just have a VPS server for personal use with a very clear knowledge from which ipaddress they access their server.
Anyway..hahahah take this Nigerians & Co hackers!
Ok thanks for your inspiring suggestion!

  • Windows Server 2008 - Advanced Sharing Issues

    Hello,
I maintain a small Windows server for a lab on a college campus, and we're currently experiencing some errors when sharing a folder called "students". We're using advanced permissions to share the folder under the network shared name "students".
It worked for months, but now students can no longer access the folder. The permissions are correct, and upon making another share called "students2" (pointing to the same folder on the server with the same permissions), it worked. My question is,
what would cause the original share to be inaccessible (show on the network but deny access) to usergroups that should have access? Thank you for your time, I look forward to your replies.
    Gareth

    Hi,
I didn’t found the similar issue, base on my experience, that situation may caused by DNS issue, could you try to access the share by the IP address? Please disable all your
AV soft then monitor the status again.
    Hope this helps.

  • WSUS server and client configuration issues

I just inherited WSUS from my predecessor (it was turned off because of a full disk) so I’m still learning how to use it. Turning it back on I changed where updates should come from, they were stored locally and now I’m pulling them down off of the Microsoft
Update location. What I’m seeing is that I have a bunch of computers that WSUS “sees” but are showing “Failed or Needed” status. Unless I visit each machine and manually do the updates this status does not change. Additionally I have some client computers
(Windows 7) that are not showing up as managed by WSUS. If I reading this right I’m running version Update Services 6.2.9200.16384 on Management Console 3.0 Version 6.2 (build 9200) on Windows Server 2012.
How can I force WSUS to automatically update the “Failed and Needed” devices?
How can I get those clients that are not being managed by WSUS to be managed?
Some of the things that I have done so far on the server and clients are:
Create a GPO (see attached for WSUS)
    wuauclt
    /detectnow
    wuauclt /reportnow
    wuauclt.exe /detectnow
    gpupdate /force after
    modifying the GPO
I even ran the SolarWinds WSUS diagnostic (as a non-administrator) and got this as the output:
    # Solarwinds® Diagnostic Tool for the WSUS Agent # 1/23/2015
    Machine state
User rights:  User does not have administrative rights (Administrator rights are not available)
      Update service status:  Running
      Background Intelligent Transfer service status:
    Running
      OS Version:  Windows 8.1 Pro
Windows update agent version:   7.9.9600.17489 (WU Agent is OK)
    Windows Update Agent configuration settings
      Automatic Update:    Enabled
Options:  Automatically download and notify of installation
Use WSUS Server: Not found (There is no such key)
Windows Update Server:  Not found (There is no such key)
Windows Update Status Server:  Not found (There is no such key)
WSUS URLs are identical:  Values are empty
WSUS Server Connectivity -- Connectivity check is impossible
    So, my questions are:
What tool do I use to configure the client machine?
How do I get WSUS to update my clients?
    Thanks
    Sam

    Steven,
I'm pretty sure that this is not the right forum to discuss this in but just so we can close this case.
On my computer I ran the command gpupdate /force I
then rebooted my computer to make sure that the group policy would be updated. The first screen shot is from my domain controller and the second is from my computer. As you can see the Domain Controller has the correct settings but the local machine doesn't.
Other parts of the DC GPO settings have worked so I'm somewhat comfortable that it is being propagated properly.

Public DNS servers should not be used in IP settings of DCs. You need to configure them as forwarders instead. Also, I would recommend using your ISP DNS servers instead of Google ones.
For the recommendation of IP settings to be used on DCs, please refer to what is written in this Wiki article: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18513.active-directory-replication-issues-basic-troubleshooting-steps-single-ad-domain-in-a-single-ad-forest.aspx

  • Windows Server 2003 file share issues - on wifi directory changes to root automatically

I have this strange issue and it ONLY happens on wifi.
If I browse to windows share: \\hpdsfandp\common$\folder1\folder2 - within seconds explorer changes the directory back to \\hpdsfandp\common$
*this does not happen if I'm on ethernet
*this does not happen if I go to a different server (eg) \\etdb2\c$\folder1
I tried diff wireless access points and it happens on both.  Sometimes the issue goes away but then comes back the next day
I did run wireshark on the client and I got a few errors:
    ERROR (SMB):  NT Status: STATUS_INVALID_HANDLE
    ERROR (SMB):  NT Status: STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

    Hi,
Please check the following 2 group policy settings:
    1. Make sure you do not have the policy configured in User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System ->  User Profiles -> Connect home directory to root of the share.
    2. Set the Group Policy setting under Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System ->  Logon -> Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon to Enabled.

  • Elements 9  Switching from Windows to Mac - two big issues

I've just started looking into the process of switching from Elements on Windows to Elements on the Mac.  For the most part, the two versions appear to be quite similar in looks and functionality.  There are however two major gaps (in my opinion) in functionality that really make me question whether I'll move forward with Elements on the MAC.  Hopefully these are planned enhancements and I was hoping that someone would have some insight on the issue.
First, there is no EXPORT feature that I can see on the Mac version.  I used this all the time on Windows(Organizer->File->Export as New File).  A huge gap if one uses the product for building personal photo websites.
Second, and maybe I just missed some setting, but the SAVE behavior when you EDIT photos places both the original and Edited version of the photo in the default Save Location as indicated in the product Preferences.  So what I have seen is that it takes both the originals and edited versions and moves them.  Again, this seems to be a major difference from how the Windows versions handles this.  Seems as if the default should be to leave the photo's where they are.
If anyone has a solution to these issues I'd appreciate the help.

First of all, I know for a fact there was another user on a Windows platform indicating Shutterfly was an option.
Secondly, right on Elements' website it indicates it is partnered with Kodak, Shutterfly and even Costco (now Costco, I think you need to buy the program right at Costco warehouse if I understand the disclaimer, which would mean a trial, downloaded or purchased anywhere else would not have Costco listed as an option). http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/family/partneroffers/

and, then another member on this forum had posted this visual:
