Windows service host using 100% of cpu randomly

I have noticed that seemingly randomly my computer will grind to a complete halt and I had no idea why. The problem first appeared when I was watching netflix and it would cause the video to completely halt and for fragmented sounds to play. Later it started
to happen even when I was just using my computer to move documents around or browse the internet. I have done a few SFC /scannow and also scanned my computer for various malware with different programs including bitdefender and spybot.
I have not installed any new programs that I noticed that caused a problem the problem appears to be mainly caused by service host:local service (4). I stopped windows from auto updating but the problem still persists so I re enabled it. Any help you could
offer I would greatly appreciate.
Ps: I remember reading about this being caused by a corrupt driver, I did a SFC /scannow and found a violation that could not be repaired initially but I ended up being able to repair it after restarting. (Not
sure why this is all mini)

Hi,
Many factors can cause a high CPU (SVCHOST.EXE), auto update is only one of the possible causes. I sugegst you refer to the following link for troubleshooting, you can use Process Explorer to view the detailed process.

  • Apple Mail client app (version 8.0) using 100%+ of CPU upon using mail drop (13" R-MBP running Yosemite 10.10)

    Hello Support Community,
I am having quite the interesting issue. I have read plenty of reports where users' Apple Mail app is using 100% of CPU. This did not start for me until I went to go use the new mail drop feature in Yosemite. I am running Yosemite (10.10) on my 13" Retina - MacBook Pro (flash storage, 8GB RAM, 2.4 dual-core Intel i5) and my Apple mail is version 8.0. I have tried 3 different mail services (2 gmail accounts and iCloud), all result in the same issue. I have also done a complete erase of the hard disk and a brand new install of Yosemite, the issue persists.
As previously stated my mail app is using 100% upon, and only while, using the mail drop feature. If I force quit the mail app and allow it a minute, the mail app returns to using less than 1% of the CPU and the app and entire system resume normal function. Upon attempting to resend the same message that is placed in my outbox the CPU usage jumps to 50-80%. After a few seconds, the CPU usage will sometimes jump higher than 100%, ranging from 130% - 199%. All of these observations were made using Activity Monitor. Of course you can see my frustration, an app using this much CPU stops every process my Mac is doing (using safari, messages, iTunes etc.) - the whole computer locks up. Even force quitting is a difficult process to attempt.
Does anyone have a fix for this? I am at a loss and have no idea what to do. I am a pretty tech savvy guy and have tried everything that I would've thought would fix this. Is there anyway this could be a hardware issue? I don't think so but... all possibilities need to be taken into consideration, even though that one seems outlandish. Upon creating a new user account with a separate user library (but same system library) I figured the OS was the problem. I can't narrow it down to being a specific mail provider, and it can't be my OS since I have now erased and reinstalled 10.10 twice. Thank you!

I have this same issue.  It has been driving me insane, Mac Mail uses 100% CPU most of the time I use it, after every time I open the machine, or after a sleep or even mostly after a screen saver has locked me out.  It normally settles down after 5-15 minutes, but then happens every time again.  It is killing my battery.

  • CWBufferedAO.zip uses 100% of CPU

This sample program is modified as follows,
    CWAO1.UpdateClock.Frequency = 1024
    CWAO1.NUpdates = 1024
    CWAO1.ProgressInterval = 256
When PCI-MIO-XE16-10 is used and NUpdates is the same value as Frquency, this program uses 100% of CPU and "STOP" button does not work.
Our program was developed for DAQCard-6036E and was intended to use it on PCI-MIO-16XE-10. Because of programming requirement, the stopping process should be taken within 1 second after STOP button is clicked.
Is there any reason why this sample program uses 100% of CPU when small value of NUpdates is applied?

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2 never finishes searching for updates and use 100% of CPU.

Hi everyone, I am having issues updating a clean Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2, so any help with be appreciated cause I've already tried all my cards for the past 5 days in this particular issue without success.
All I did so far is installing Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 2, open IE to update, it keeps searching for updates and never stop, after 20mn to 30mn the process svchost.exe start using 100% of my CPU.
I already tried the following scenarios:
1-  Install IE8, install the update KB927891 and the Windows Update Agent 3.0 (I already had this one installed). Reboot and run windows update trough IE8 and the problem did not solved.
2- Install those 2 software "MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run" and "MicrosoftFixit50777", open IE to update, it still hangs and continues eating my CPU. This is the output of "MicrosoftFixit".
Windows Update error 0x8007000D(2014-01-06-T-06_06_34A) --> Not Fixed
Cryptographic service components are not registered (This service is actually running successfully) --> Not Fixed
3- I found the following script that would register some DLL, deleting the "SoftwareDistribution" and forcing windows update to solve the problem and nothing happened either.

Herein is the root cause of your issue. A topic that's been discussed in several blogs, forums, and even in the media since September regards a known issue with attempting to patch IE6 RTM via Windows Update.
Aside from that particular issue... browsing the Internet with an unpatched instance of IE6, especially from a Windows Server system, is also asking for a world of hurt.
    Might I suggest the following:
Download the IE8 for Windows Server 2003 installer to a thumb drive.
Download the latest Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Windows Server 2003 to a thumb drive.
Reinstall Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.
Upgrade to IE8 from the thumb drive installer and apply the
    Cumulative Security Update.
Now your machine is capable of safely browsing to Windows Update to install the rest of the updates (well, maybe, there's also all those other Security Updates from the past seven years that your machine still has vulnerabilites for -- even those seven
years of updates are going to take a Very Long Time to scan for, download, and install).
Why don't you have a WSUS server? -- noting, wryly, that you've posted in the *WSUS* forum.

  • ITunes store using 100% of CPU

Since upgrading to iTunes 11.0.4, performance of the iTunes store has been horribly slow, taking 5 seconds to register a keystroke and using 100% or more of the CPU. Any idea what's up?

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Itunes using 100% of CPU

In the last 6 months or so (and across at least two iTunes updates), whenever I launch iTunes it ends up using 100% of my CPU and basically hangs my PC until I can manage to stop the iTunes 32 process.
Before it hits 100% it hovers in the 60-90% range...the kicker is usually when it trys to sync an iPod or iPad...then it's 100% and doesn't ever come down.
I've done some of the suggested solutions in previews forums and posts, and nothing has ever worked.
Any ideas?  Anyone from Apple actually willing to take ownership of this problem that seems to date back years and years and over many different versions of the software.
It also seems to affect both Mac and PC users - althought the majority seem to be PC users.
I have a dual core HP laptop with Windows 7 Home 64-bit and 8 Gbs of RAM....so it should have the horsepower to run this with no issues.
Although iTunes has never run smoothly on any PC, it's never been this bad and basically unusable.
Any help would be great....from an actual Apple engineer would be nice
    Jake in Vancouver

    Hello mjake7,
It sounds like iTunes is having performance issues when you launch it, and in particular when you are trying to sync a device. I would recommend the troubleshooting steps from this article named:
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issueshttp://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717
You will want to start with troubleshooting for 3rd party plugins that could be causing the issue, then move onto system wide vs user specific isolation with the next part of the article.
    Start iTunes in Safe Mode
Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interference from plug-ins or scripts not manufactured by Apple.
Hold down Shift–Control while opening iTunes. You should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
    Click Continue.
See if the issue you're experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
If you have the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the "Create a new user account" section. If you don't experience the same issue, follow these steps to remove third-party plug-ins.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Windows Service Hosted workflow, Stop it with ServiceOperation call?

I am working on a POC for Scheduling Workflows. I have a workflow hosted with Workflow Services Host. Using a While activity I loop while KeepRunning = true. Using Pick-->PickBranch I have two ServiceOperations running in Receive activities in each
Branch.  There is a StartWorkflow ServiceOperation in one branch and a StopWorkflow ServiceOperation in another branch. The StartWorkflow operation basically just runs another Workflow called RunWorkflow with a calculated Delay activity between each
completion. It will loop indefinitely on that RunWorkflow activity until the KeepRunning is set to false. The StopWorkflow ServiceOperation is what changes the KeepRunning flag to false. My problem is that the StartWorkflow operation never completes so that
the Messaging directed to StopWorkflow can take place. I have used a CorrelationHandle to group the two ServiceOperations together set to a Guid property on the incoming DataContracts (requests). Is there someway to get the StartWorkflow operation to stop
    in this scenario?

    HI Les G. Kinney,
    Welcome to WorkFlow forum.
Workflow tracing offers a way to capture diagnostic information using .NET Framework trace listeners. Tracing can be enabled if a problem is detected with the application and then disabled again once the problem is resolved.
According to your description above, it's recommended to enable
workflow tracing first, it will give some hints why this happens.
Windows Workflow scheduling services manage how workflow instances are scheduled by the workflow runtime engine. This resource is also available. See:

  • Adobe Flash causes my comput to use 100% of CPU

Ever since about Flash ver. 11 my computer has started using 100% of the CPU and then Flash usually crashes or locks up my computer. I have done all of the updates and I am now using ver. 12.0.0.70 and it continues to be a problem. What change did they make? Before ver. 11 I had no problems.
I am running Win 7 PRO on a Dell Optiplex GX280 with an Intel Pentium 4 (3.20 GHz) and 3 GB of RAM
    Thanks,

    IE11 is doo-doo. (IMHO) I don't use it.
You can try repairing it though: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
Also look at resetting Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems
Usually it's a 3rd party app or a plug-in that interacts with Flash to spike the CPU. If Repairing/Resetting has no impact, it's something in Program Files. Another video app, perhaps.

  • Media Encoder slow, using 100% of CPU

    Hello,
I have been having a problem exporting out of Premier. I am trying to Export an FLV from an HDV timeline (1440 x 1080). My computer specs are as follows; Intel Core i7 930 @2.8ghz, Win 7 64 bit, 8 gb of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470. The problem is that the encoder says it will take 30+hrs to encode a FLV from a timeline which is only an hr in length. We checked the processes and the encoder is using 100% of the CPU and PProHeadless.exe is using almost 2gb of RAM but it is also competeing with the encoder for processing power. Does anybody know why the encoder is using so much CPU power or what steps I should take to get this export time back to a relatively normal range?

I am assuming that the material is full HDV, and that your Project's Preset matches 100%. Is that correct?
What are the specs. of your system's I/O, i.e. your HDD's. The more detail, the better.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • ESXI Guest VM is using 100% Guest CPU, but only 7% Host CPU

You're running a very old version of 5.5 so one of the first things I'd do is to install the latest patches.

We have a Dell T420 server running ESXi 5.5. The host has a single E5-2407 CPU (4 Core 2.2 GHz no Hyperthreading), 16 GB of RAM, and local RAID storage. The host runs a single Windows Server 2008 VM, which was a P2V conversion. The VM is currently assigned 1 Socket and 4 Cores, matching the host CPU. Since setting up this server about a year ago, it has had a recurring problem pop up every few months. When the problem happens, the Server 2008 VM suddenly has max CPU usage and terrible performance, but CPU is being maxed not by a single program, but from several normal processes. For example, WMI, explorer.exe, and task manager may all show 30% CPU usage. Meanwhile, though the Guest VM has 100% CPU usage, the Host will show it only using 300-500 MHz of CPU, or about 7% of available. This is despite the fact it's the sole VM and has full...

  • Disnoted and SyncServer using 100% of cpu on Windows 8

When I run iTunes, aftter a little time, disnoted starts to take 50% of my cpu time.  After syncing, and removing my iPad mini, Syncserver then starts to take the other 50%.  This continues until I kill those tasks.  I am running Windows 8 and the latest version of iTunes.  Anything I can do?

By now we got iTunes 12.1.0.71 and the problem still occurs on Windows 8.1 if Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 (latest version 15.0.2.361) is installed. On my PC this high CPU usages already happens while iTunes syncs my iPhone. Kaspersky Version 2015 doesn't need to be running. It's enough, if it is installed. Going back to Kaspersky Version 2014 and the problem disappears. Even if the problem only happens with Kaspersky 2015 installed, their developers blame Apple for a faulty iTunes software (ref. "http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=301117&view=findpost&p=2316253").
While the problem is around for more than 6 months, it seems neither Kaspersky nor Apple will take action to fix it. I reported the issue to Apple and Kaspersky support. Is there anything else we, as simple users, can do to speed up a solution?

  • Skype using 100% of CPU and hard disk resources, c...

So, lately, I switched the hard drives in my computer to migrate from Windows XP and install Windows Vista to my machine, everything was going alright with my machine, until I decided to install Skype, as it's the main communications line with me and the internet, and I noticed it now takes up pretty much all of my CPU and hard disk resources when loading all of my contacts and messages after installation, but it finished loading them, and it still uses a high amount of my resources. Skype uses approximately 250MB of memory (Which is kind of high on a system like mine..), it maxes out the processor at around 95-100% utilization, and the hard drive light is on full, as I hear the read head spazzing out on the thing anyways. I was wondering, is this an issue with the latest version of Skype? I can't use older versions since Skype/Microsoft decommissioned them, and it won't even let me log in to them. • WMI Provider Host using too much CPU

Sometimes WmiPrvSE.exe starts to use around 19% of my CPU and doesn't stop unless I shut down the computer. I am running Windows 8.1 on a Thinkpad W520 and recently reinstalled so the OS is relatively clean. ProcessHacker shows that the threads are caused by
    ntdll.dll. The stack shows this:

  • Syncing uses 100% of CPU

When I sync my iPod using iTunes, it is very slow.  The process can take 10 minutes even though I have very little on the iPod (26.8 gigabytes free on a 32G iPod 4) and it it set NOT to sync any songs or videos.  As soon as I start the sync process the AppleMobileDevice process jumps to 100% CPU usages on my 3.0GHz Pentium 4 computer with 2G RAM running Windows XP Home SP3.  What's more it stays at 100% (slowing the computer to a crawl) after the sync is complete and iTunes is closed.  If I stop and immediately restart AppleMobileDevice (I do this with two clicks via a batch file) CPU usage for AMD returns to zero.  This is a relatively recent problem.
