Windows shares discoverability no longer working

I never used to have a problem with this in Leopard. Windows shares always appeared in the Shared section of finder just fine.
But a few months ago they just stopped appearing, and not just on one mac, I have an iMac Core Duo and an iBook G4 and they have stopped appearing on both. The 3 windows machines see each other just fine.
I've tried restoring my router to factory defaults, that hasn't helped, so I've ruled that out. The only thing I can imagine is that a software update some months ago has broken it.
I've been experimenting and have found that if I change the workgroup name on one of the macs and one of the windows machines they start to see each other again. But after an hour or so the windows share will disappear again. And rebooting both machines will not get it back, I have to rename the workgroup again. It's mental!
Using the ip addresses in connect to server works just fine, it's only the discovering of netbios names that is broken. Also, the windows machines can see the macs just fine.
What is going on?

I have the same exact problem. Only thing I've found that makes it tolerable is I created an alias of the shared windows folder so I don't have to use the IP address every time I want to connect to it, I just click on the alias from my mac and it will automatically mount the shared volume.
Still, I'd love to figure out why it won't list it under the shared section of the sidebar like it used to...

  • Installed update 2015-002, and Connection to Windows FileShare is no longer working

    Installed update 2015-002 (10.10.2 ?) to MacBook Pro running Yosemite, and CFS connections (Windows file share) connection no longer works properly. It was working without any problem just before the upgrade. Can I go back or uninstall the upgrade, until this problem is fixed?  This seriously impacts me at work...

    Hello DaveT001,
    If you feel that the update is causing you and issues you can always reinstall OS X Yosemite. To do that, take a look at the article below to walk you through how to do that. Then it is a matter of updating your system to what you want it to be.

  • Share button no longer working after updating to iOS 6.1.2

    So this morning I updated both my iphone and ipad to 6.1.2 and now the share buttons in the app store no longer works, when I use the search function. To be specific if I do a search for anything and then try and open one of the apps in the search results and push the share button it never opens up the window to select a sharing option. The loading wheel at the top of just spins endlessly, but if I go to the "featured apps" page and click an app the share feature works. Worth noting that my iPad was also updated and works regardless

    Hey I get this too does anyone else get it? Would just reinstalling fix it?
    I have an iPhone 4 with 6.1.2.

  • "Activity window" in Safari no longer works to download YouTube videos. Why not? Workaround?

    For years I have used Apple's recommended standard technique whenever I wanted to download a Flash video embedded in a YouTube page to my hard drive:
    - Open a YouTube page and click on the video's "play" button to get it started;
    - Press command-option-A to then open up Safari's "Activity Window" which lists all the components of the page;
    - Find on the list the component for the loading Flash video, which is usually much larger (measured in MB rather than KB) than all the other components, and also is usually still in the process of loading, so it's easy to spot;
    - Double-click the component's name on the list in the Activity Window, and voila, the video downloads to my hard drive.
    This "trick" is described everywhere as THE standard way to download YouTube videos (and similar page components); and I have used it successfully for many years.
    HOWEVER, sometime very recently (not sure when, exactly -- a few weeks or months ago) YouTube has changed the way its pages are coded, so that this technique no longer works. When I open the Activity Window, instead of seeing one large loading video file that's easily identifiable, I see a whole series of large files, all exactly 1.7mb big (no matter how large the file size of the actual video in question is), and they constantly increase in number -- at first there are two such files, but over the seconds and minutes more and more appear. Furthermore, many files with no named size are constantly loading and then disappearing. And here's the whole point: I've tried double-clicking on ALL of these files, dozens of ways on dozens of YouTube pages, and none of the are the video file I seek and none of them cause the file to  download to my hard drive.
    If I click on one the mysterious 1.7mb components, I indeed get a ".flv" downloaded to my hard drive, but it's not actually a Flash video; clicking on its downloaded file icon just brings up a blank box or an error message saying that it's not really a video file at all. I think it's some sort of "decoy" file or something to do with streaming Flash code.
    To see what I mean, just go to YouTube, load any random video page, and then open Safari's Activity WIndow and try to download the video that way.
    This happens on an iMac running Safari 5.1 on OSX 10.6.8, and also on a MacBook Pro running Safari 5.0.2  on OSX 10.6.5, and on a few other new-ish Macs I tested it out on, but failed to note their version numbers.
    I'm presuming that this problem is not specific to my computer, but is caused by the way that YouTube altered the background code for their pages. I don't know if the glitch is an intentional attempt by YouTube to prevent downloads, or if it is an accidental "bug" of the new code. Either way:
    How can I fix the problem? Is there some other lesser-known built-in way for Safari/Mac to download the new kind of YouTube videos? Or is there some reliable freeware or shareware or plug-in or extension or whatever for Safari that would enable YouTube downloading?
    I tried a freeware program called "Evom" that was highly touted, but it too was thwarted by the new YouTube code and failed to extract any videos from the YouTube page, even though that's what the application was designed to do.
    As a side note, I will say that I also have (though rarely use) FireFox for Mac, and the "Unplug" plug-in installed on it, and that ALSO "broke" recently and no longer has the capacity to recognize or download YouTube videos, even though previously it worked fine. This is why I think the issue is not specific to my set-up or computer, but is due to a change in YouTube's underlying code.)
    Any help with an explanation, solution or workaround would be much appreciated (by me and by millions of others who I assume are facing the same problem!).

    Carolyn:
    I just now did exactly as you recommended. Result? No change.
    Even after trashing the files and restarting and everything else, the Activity Window and YouTube behave exactly as they did before.
    (I had actually previously tried something very similar to your recommendation, and it didn't have any effect then either.)
    In case it's helpful, here's an example of what one of the mystery components that load endlessly in the Activity Window is listed as:

  • The share button no longer works in pages so I can email documents to others

    When I first got my Mac and started using it, I discovered the share button at the top of pages, where I could email the document to others without having to export it and then attach it to an email.  After installing Mountain Lion, I found that this function would no longer work.  I took it to the apple store and they said we should reinstall the OS system.  So after backing everything up and spending almost two hours in the store, then another 30 minutes reinstalling backups, I find it it is still not working.  I click the share button, choose email, PDF, the button high lights, then there is a popping sound, then the high light disappears and nothing happens.

  • Share destinations no longer working

    I'm not exactly sure what changed, but my share destination presets are no longer working. I can access the share drop down menu and highlight my destination preset choice by mousing over, but when I try to click on the preset, nothing happens -- the click doesn't register at all. I get the same result when I try to share via the file menu. I can send to Compressor though, where the same presets work, so it's got to be something specific to sharing in FCP. I ran permissions to see if it would fix any errors, but that did nothing.  Any thoughts?

    Sorry if I am pointing out the obvious, but:
    1) Are you sure the timeline has focus (and not the browser or viewer)
    2) Are there some clips in your projects that are still referencing media in a camera or card? These would prevent you from exporting.

  • Quicktime "Share" feature no longer works for me.

    For the past year now I've been using Quicktimes "Share" feature to upload videos to YouTube. As of today, the feature no longer works. When I open a video, click "Share" and then "YouTube" absolutely nothing happens. I've tried with multiple different video files, even some that I previously uploaded using this same method, but to no avail.
    I rebooted the computer, and that did not help either. I tried some of the other "Share" options, but non of them work either. The most I've gotten was from the "iTunes" option, from which I got a drop down menu and a few export options, but after selecting my options and clicking next nothing happened.
    If it helps, I am on a 2011 iMac, running OSX Lion, and yes, everything is up-to-date (as of 07/04/2012)
    (Also, it may be worth mentioning that whenever I export a video from Final Cut, even though I have the option "When finished open in Quicktime," the files will not open automatically. This started happening at the same time as my other issue, but I'm nowhere near as concerned about fixing this.)

  • Windows 7 Disc no longer working in DVD drive

    Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.1
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Hi,
    I have an unusal problem that I have found several cases on throughout the forums but none have given an answer and I'm hoping someone here could help me.
    I bought an official Windows 7 disc not long back and installed it onto my Macbook Pro with no problems. Since then I removed the Windows partition, mainly because I wasn't using it.
    However, there are several Windows games that I'd like to play and so I would like to repartition Windows 7.
    My problem is that the drive won't read the Windows 7 discs, not the 32 bit or the 64. When I push it into the drive I can here it begin to spin and slow down several times before it is ejected.
    I've tried cleaning the discs and using a drive cleaning CD. The drive accepts all my other DVDs and CDs without a problem, just not these.
    This is my first Mac device so I'm a bit of a Mac Mong. I'm hoping it is someothing obvious.
    Thanks in advance for any help that may be offered.
    Cheers
    Shaun

    does your machine have an integrated superdrive? if not, skip the disk and download an ISO from below and use that in boot camp assistant.

  • Windows Shortcut Keys no longer working!?!

    Hello All,
    Framemaker 8(p277) has recently decided that after a period of use, standard windows shortcuts will stop working (ctrl+v / ctrl+c / ctrl+z!!! etc..) along with keystroke / character repeats.
    This only occurs within framemaker. Windows short cuts and keystroke repeat still function correctly in all other apps running at the same time
    right-clicking and selecting copy / paste / etc.. still works.
    Un-installing and re-installing the most recent framemaker patch seemed to temporarily fix the problem, however, it has now returned.
    I'm running xp Sp3, fully patched...
    and the repetitious arrow-key bashing that I'm now having to do is slowly driving my co-workers INSANE :)
    please help!
    brad

    Brad:
    My experience with the problem is that it's been around since version 5 of the product.
    I've observed that the problem seems to occur if I double-click on an embedded graphic, thus opening it in a third-party graphics program (PaintShop Pro 7). That is to say that on days when I don't work with graphics, I can run FrameMaker for hours and never have any CTRL key problems.
    When the problem does occur, I must perform one of the following to restore function-key operation, in order of preference:
    Exit and restart FrameMaker (easiest but doesn't always work)
    Log off and then back in to Windows (somewhat more time consuming, works almost all of the time)
    Reboot (time consuming, but always works)
    That's my experience. Other forum regulars have had different experiences...
    Cheers & hope this helps,
    Riley

  • After upgrading to Windows 8.1 firefox longer works. I got it to load but screen is either blank or doesn't go to target address

    after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from 8 nothing works correctly. Firefox 1st received 'unable to load XPcom' After resetting and uninstalling several times Firefox now loads to either a support screen or blank screen. It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Javascript with window.location.href no longer working in Content Editor in Sharepoint 2010 where users have IE8

    I have recently found that when using a Sharepoint 2010 Content Editor web part to house some Javascript that the window.location.href (or window.location) is not working when the end users have IE8 installed on their PC's.  We have confirmed
    that the window.location.href is working if the users are on IE7 or Google Chrome with the same Javascript.  In addition, we added alert() to the javascript to ensure that it was infact running, which the alerts appeared on the screen with no issues.
    The result that I am receiving in IE8 is that when the window.location.href is set to the url that the user should be directed to, it simply refreshes the current page and leaves the user where they originally were.
    I have seen the posts to have my site setup as a Trusted Site, but this is not an option for our company as they defined all internal Sharepoint sites as trusted already.  Besides this, having all users go into their Internet Options is not really a
    solution but a means to annoy your users.
    What I am looking for is a permanent solution that I can make within my javascript that will work for both IE7 and IE8 users within a Sharepoint 2010 environment.  If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that the window.location.href not worked in IE 8.
    I think the issue
    is likely due to the value of your variables. If they contain special or invalid characters, those needs to be passed through
    encodeURIComponent before being assigned to window.location.href.

    You can also use the following methods to check whether it works.
    Window.navigate();

    Self.location.href;
    Top.location;

  • Sync; Windows Updater; iTunes no longer works

    I connected my iPhone 4 to the USB port, synced it and then left the phone connected and iTunes running when I went to bed. When I woke up, the welcome screen was on and, after login, I received the message that Windows updater had performed some updates. When I clicked on iTunes, I received an error message that iTunes had some missing files and needed to be reinstalled. I attempted to do a system restore to recapture my iTunes library before the update. System restore would not work either. I am concerned that my iTunes library will be lost if I reinstall iTunes as suggested by the error message. HELP!

  • ICloud email no longer working on Window 7.8 Phone

    I have been receiving my Apple emails on my Windows 7.8 Phone successfully for the last 2 years. About 3 months ago emails could no longer be sent or received and I typically get the following error codes dependant upon how I have my IMAP/SMTP settings configured; 800c2746 or 80072FA8.
    Apple email is working fine from my Android tablet and also from my Windows 7 PC and I've tried replicating these settings on my phone without success. I've googled the problem and tried all the different set up options I can find but not have worked. I'm beyond frustrated now and I suspect Apple has broken something during the recent iCloud work for IOS or Yosemite as nothing has changed on any of my devices and it's only my Windows phone that no longer works.
    Does ANYONE have a Windows 7 Phone (mine is a Nokia 800) that is successfully sending and receiving iCloud emails as of today, 2nd November 2014. If you do would you be kind enough to tell me what server settings you are using.
    Thanks.
