Windows sharing - NOT THAT EASY

So I've just bought a new MBP 13" and I am having a bunch of problems :S one of them is the ability to share files from my desktop PC running windows 7 and be able to view them on my MBP, so taking a look at apple's website, they say that the name will just pop up in the sidebar automatically!!! WRONG... I can't access the files unless each and every time I connect to the server and type in the IP address or the computer name!!! and I have to do so each and every time.
on the other hand I can access my files in just seconds when viewing them on my 4 years old toshiba laptop
The other thing that is not working is printer sharing? how the **** do I get it to work, I've tried every setting, in addition to enabling ldp printing on my windows 7 PC.... the result: NOT even close to WORKING
PS: the desktop computer doesn't have any type of security, I've just formatted it to check if the problem will be solved, and both the MBP and the PC are on the same workgroup.

I can assure you that printer sharing under windoze to mac works. I am not saying it's easy to setup, it does work. Evidently you are writing down a parameter with mistakes. In defense to Apple, my only complaint is the lack of auto networking with windows but I feel it isn't really Apple's problem. And more like a courtesy to somewhat being networkable to windoze. I have absolutely no problems networking with other macs. I wish I could afford to dump all my windoze machines.

This is again one of the questions that should never be a problem with a machine that has such a good marketing that it is labeled as "easy to use" - NO it is NOT easy to use. And this is not the only issue I have with it AND I think of throwing the very expensive MacBook Pro through a closed window. From wake up from sleep issues to vertical and horizontal stripes through timemachine stuff and not responding ForceQuitApplication Windows I am about to believe that Windows overall is not such a bad thing. A simple shared folder should NOT force someone to post a question in a discussion. Overall I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED BY THE MACBOOK PRO AND MAC OS X LEOPARD! Why was I never asked by Apple how I liked it in some customer survey?
    --YES:
I (MacBook Pro 10.5.4 Admin Account) wanted to share a folder (not the "shared" folder) with my girlfriend's MacBook 10.4.11.
In the Help of the System Preferences Sharing Screen is says:
    "Sharing files on your network
You can set up your computer to share files and folders with other users on your network. You can set up your computer to share your entire computer with everyone, or restrict the sharing service to allow specific users access to only certain folders."
This made me believe that when I added a folder for example /Users/MyName/FolderToShare within the shared folders list, and for that folder set the User "NameOfGirlfriend" with Read & Write access (btw. also Everyone with Read & Write access) my girlfriend should be able to access (GO to server..) the newly shared folder as it says above in the Sharing Screen: "Other users can access your computer at afp://IP address..." (I also tries SMB)
WHY IS LEOPARD NOT ABLE TO HANDLE THIS VERY SIMPLE JOB ?????????????????????????????????????
is again the problem sitting in front of the machine? in front of my machine? in front of a machine in cupertino?

+And this is not the only issue I have with it AND I think of throwing the very expensive MacBook Pro through a closed window. From wake up from sleep issues to vertical and horizontal stripes through timemachine stuff and not responding ForceQuitApplication+
I'm assuming these problems are current problems and not something Apple has fixed through hardware repairs...
If you're having those sorts of problems (particularly the vertical and horizontal stripes comment sets off very loud sirens in my head), that strongly points in my mind to either a bad logic board or defective RAM or both, and with the display corruption bit, my guess would be leaning towards a bad logic board. None of those problems are in any way normal or typical of Mac hardware.
Trying to fix file sharing while you're experiencing display corruption, frequent failures to wake from sleep, and frequent random application hangs is like trying to fix your car stereo while the engine is on fire. While your MacBook Pro is still under warranty, run, don't walk to your nearest Apple store and get a genius to take a look at this thing....

  • Adding a Windows Shared Printer that I cannot see

In 10.4 I was able to add a windows printer that was shared on my network that I couldn't see by hitting alt-More Printers. It would give me an advanced mode. I cannot find how to do this in Leopard. Can someone help me please.

    Hi,
    hade said in this thread-http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1201487&tstart=0
"When you're adding a new printer right-click on the top bar with all the buttons, then choose customize (or what ever it's called in english) and add the advanced button.
With that advanced button you kind of get a window like the old one, where you can choose the windows printer via samba."
I still need to toggle the printer and I can't duplex unless I connect via USB, but.......

  • Trying to tidy up, not that easy?

FIRST : in Finder on the left column i have about 20 files saying Untitled CD or DVD with a burn symbol next to them - I cna't for the life of me work out how to delete these empty folders, any idea?
SECOND : I appear to have 'lost' my TRASH icon in Finder, how to do I put it back and find Trash? (I may have been too enthusiastic with some of my tidying and cannot find where it went)
    thanks

In as much as this is a visualization problem I would take it to an Apple store or AASP and have them work it out hands on.

  • Windows 8 and a dead home sharing - not answered

Hi all. I've read through countless post about home sharing. Mine used to work and now I'm lucky if it just shows up on my new (3rd gen) iPad. I have changed Firewall setting in Norton (not Windows). I have turned them off, and yet nada. I've got the 4 main ports open - TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353 so the firewall won't block them, but I'm still at a loss.
Right now, I'm at my wits end. Can anyone help me? I've talked with Norton, they tried and failed. I'm guessing this is now a stupid Window's issue, but I can't find it. I've turnoff and turned on services - Bonjour, Itunes.
Help.... I need my Home Sharing. ;-)
To any heros out there, thank you in advance.

Sorry, but no computer manufacturer is going to provide support for a new operating operating system on a computer over four years old. Your HP IQ804 originally came with Windows Vista and HP provided drivers for upgrading to Window 7. Your best bet is to download Windows 8 drivers from the actual manufacturers of the hardware contained in your computer... Intel, AMD/ATI, Nvidia, Realtek, Atheros, Ralink, etc
    Per HP's Windows 8 Upgrade Information;
Not all Windows 8 features may be available on all PCs.
Your particular experience with Windows 8 will be determined by the capabilities of your PC.
HP is providing upgrade instructions and drivers will be available for most Windows 7 systems sold after 1st October 2011.
If you want to restore the original operating system after upgrading, you must create HP recovery media before you upgrade.
Please note that if you purchased your system prior to October 1, 2011, HP has not tested these PCs or developed Windows 8 upgrade instructions or drivers for them. Upgrading such systems may be difficult or impossible.

  • Windows Sharing "Accounts..." passwords do not reset?

I am trying to connect my PC to my Mac and it seems to work fine for my laptop but not for my G5 tower. So, I went into my sharing preferences on my G5 and checked that my Windows Sharing was turned on, it was. Then I clicked on the Accounts... button at the bottom right (while selected on Windows Sharing) and there was a list of all the Mac user accounts. This page states...
"Sharing with Windows computers requires storing your password in a less secure manner. You must enter the password for each account that you want to enable."
My administrative account is already selected, so I try to deselect it and it asks me for my password...
"Enter Account Password - Enter <Name>'s password to disable Windows Sharing for this account."
When I enter it in, it says "Incorrect Password" when I am sure it is the correct one. Why does this password not work and what can I do to reset it?
This seems like some sort of Apple bug to me?

Yeah, I assumed the password should be the Administrative password, but that is not working and I have tried multiple times so I am sure I am entering it correctly.
I can't connect to any windows shares because of this problem. So I am sure that there are no "shares mounted".
I mentioned that it is working on my laptop. So when I go to this same account settings area on the laptop, the admin password does work for this same setting.
I basically need some way of resetting this windows share account password from a different place? Does anyone know where I can do this? a preference file maybe or a plist file?

  • Macbook does not list Windows Shared in Finder

I take my Macbook to work and the Windows PC's at work show in the Finder, but when I get home the Windows Shared do not appear. I can take a PC laptop to work and it shows there in the finder. But again when I get home the Windows Shared do not show in the finder. At work I do not join the Workgroup. I have entered the Workgroup name in the WINS area on the Mac's and still a no go. I can go to Connect to Server and that allows me to connect and get the shared files that I want. All of the Windows Computers see and connect to all of the Mac's. What can be done to have the issue resolved where the Macs do not list the Windows Shared in the Finder?

I am not sure if Bonjour is the answer. I have Bonjour installed on my Vista PC and was not able to get the Vista PC to show up automatically on my MacBook (running Leopard 10.5). I could get the Vista to show up using Command K and could share files in both directions. I was suspicious that the firewall on my Vista was the problem. I had Norton Antivirus 2008 on my Vista. This version of Norton Antivirus did not have a way to configure the firewall. Last week I upgraded my Norton software to Norton 360. This version provides the ability to configure the firewall. After setting up the firewall with a rule to not block any computers on my home network, the Vista PC automatically is showing up on the Mac.

How can I get access to files on an old Dell Windows '95 machine that is not network accessable? Currently using Mac desktop and MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.4. The Dell does not have ethernet or ISB

If you are both connected to the same local network use the sharing section in System Prefernces.
On your partners Mac set up file sharing on the folder that has the files you require acces to and confirm the permissions are suitable.
You will be able to navigate to that folder with Finder, use the connect to server in the Go drop down list. You may be able to use your partners machine name or the IP address.

In iCal and Notifications on a notebook, is it possible to expand the notes window to make it easier to read and write notes? In the past, I have used Outlook calendar and tasks and I was able to expand the windows which allowed me to put a great amount of details into either the notes section in events and tasks. It would be great to be able to do this in iCal and Notifications as well. I am using a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8. Thank you very much for assistance with this.

  • Developer role able to edit a shared report that he did not create

    Hi,
It seems like user with "BI Publisher Developer" role is able to edit a report
in shared folder that he has access to.
Question: How can I create a user who can develop/create/edit his own reports,
and have view only access to some shared reports and
have edit access to some other shared reports?
i.e I want a scenario where there are 2 folders in Shared folder say FolderA and FolderB.
I want to create a user who is a developer such that he can create reports under My Folder
for his personal use and also be able to create/edit reports under Shared/FolderA,
but have only view-only access to Shared/FolderB
    Thanks

I made a in app purchase on a game and it never took, when I went back and tried it again a window popped up that said I have already purchased this item but has not been downloaded yet? How do I download it when there is not a option to download?

    Hi Dave_warr,
I would suggest restarting the iPad and see if the download resumes.
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
Resuming downloads from an iOS device
From the Home screen, tap the iTunes icon.
For iPhone/iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.
    Click the "OK" button.
Click the Resume or Resume All button to start the download.
If you don't see the application to download it, then follow these troubleshooting steps:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If the app does not appear in your list of purchases, then contact the iTunes Store for help:
How to report an issue with your iTunes Store, App Store, Mac App Store, or iBookstore purchase
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!
