Windows Sharing Question

I had to bite the bullet and get a PC Laptop (XPsp2)for work. I'm now trying to get it integrated into my home network with a couple of Macs (10.3.9, one wireless, one hardwired... both have been happily sharing files with each other for over 2 years.)
The PC's connected to the wireless router fine. I can get online.
The two macs have "Windows Sharing" turned on.
I type the address supplied by the Windows Sharing screen on my PC's Run window. ( \\192.168.1.134/myname )
The login screen comes up, and I type my user name and password and...
Now here's where things fall apart.
I cannot login. I get "The network path was not found."
I've tried the short name. I've tried the long user name. I've tried setting up a new user. I've tried both macs.
I've tried finding a parameter in my accounts settings to turn Windows Sharing on. (even though, from what I gather, my vers of OSX doesn't have this requirement)
I've read and reread several tutorials on this but cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Is this something they are not telling me? (for instance, none I've seen say whether I should login with the short or long name)
...And when I get this working, I don't want to be restricted to just a shared folder. That would be kinda lame, but I suppose it would be something.
Thanks.

I think that you need to also set the share permissions on the folder you want to share with the Windows machine.
In 10.4.9 there is a second button on the sharing tab for Windows Sharing to enable the permissions.
Try using SharePoints to set the folder permissions

  • Personal File Sharing question

    Hi,
I have a question about personal file sharing between my iMac Intel (my work computer) and an eMac (student work computer). I work at a college, and our regular back-up system on campus is just not worthwhile, so as a secondary back-up, I created a new account on the eMac (the student computer). I have already successfully accessed the regular student account via personal file sharing (it shows up on the network under the office name given to the computer), but is there a way that I can also connect directly into my new account on the eMac? Is there something that I need to do to make the separate accounts visible?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'll try to access this from a Windows PC from the internet first (then try with ubuntu)
That requires much more work, like finding Outside IP, Port Forwarding, etc., try it locally first.
    1) System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Windows Sharing.
    2) Browser won't get you to File Sharing, that would be for System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Personal Web Sharing.
    3) By default the Shared folder is shared, but you can log in as the Mac's User & see all that the Mac User can, or Sharepoints for smb...

  • Can't connect to Windows shared file server

I'm trying to connect to our Windows shared file server. I can add the drive and see it, however, when I open the folders nothing is there. I called Apple Support who said that it was most likely a Windows-related issue and that I may need to install some Windows driver on the PC the file server is on to get this to work (he wasn't exactly sure what the fix was for this). Has anyone experienced anything similar? And if so, what's the fix???

    Reinfire,
sorry to horn in on this question, but i am having a similar problem, but in reverse. I am trying to connect from Win 8.1 to my mavericks iMac but it will not connect. I am sure that it's related to SMB but the fix you have posted did nothing for it.
    Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

  • Windows Sharing and resource fork problems

Hello, I am into my second month of Mac ownership and today I tried to enable Windows Sharing to allow a PC here to map to the Mac and share files.
I enabled the Windows Sharing feature in the System Preferences. Then I tried to map to the mac using the PC (Win XP). The PC sat there for a while (maybe about 30 secs or so) trying to connect, then displayed an error message saying a semaphore timed out (I don't remember it exactly).
Anyway, I went back into System Preferences and all the options for Sharing were greyed out. I couldn't turn off or turn on anything!!
So I looked in the console log and found the following errors:
2006-08-30 18:12:40.119 System Preferences[15066] [NOTE: this exception originated in the server.]
    couldn't fork

    2006-08-30 18:54:23.310 System Preferences[21650] hardwareCheckThread got an exception name:NSInternalInconsistencyException reason:couldn't fork
In the System log there are a whole bunch of these messages:
Aug 30 18:11:23 localhost kernel[0]: proc: table is full
I went into the Terminal and tried to get to a command prompt but it just sat there with a blank screen.
So I shut a bunch of apps I had open down only keeping Firefox open and I searched online for issues regarding this error - found information telling me I could kill the smbd processes and up the max proc limit.
After waiting a while (didn't want to reboot - I'm stubborn :-)), reopened Terminal and could see the command prompt. But anything I tried to do regarding killing the smbd processes or even doing a directory listing or a process listing gave the error: fork: resource temporarily unavailable
So I just waited it out - eventually I was able to kill the smbd processes. After I did that, I went back into System Preferences and was able to work with the Sharing preferences again (I disabled Windows Sharing).
And after all that, here is my question(s):
    - is this problem going to keep happening when I turn on Windows Sharing and a PC tries to map to the Mac?
    - do I need to up the process limit if I'm going to turn on Windows Sharing?
    - is there a bug/issue I don't know about regarding this and a fix?
    - and last but not least, am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you for your help.

There were some Macbook/SMB specific problems that suppossedly got fixed with the 10.4.6 update, but I'd try the 10.4.7 Combo Update, as Deltas have more problems.

  • How to print on Windows Shared Printer

As I search in Google I found that there are many question about hot to print on windows shared printers. This is the way....
Before you add your windows shared printers in you Mac, sometimes you can not find your printer driver. The only way is directly connect your windows shared printers to you Mac, and connect your Mac to internet. After that your mac will automatically download printer driver. Now you have to add windows shared printers to your mac (this is part is easy..I'm not going to explain this...), and after you select the right driver you still can NOT print to windows shared printers ? You already have user & password for PC that connected to the windows shared printers...but nothing happened in your printer...
    Soooo.....
All you have to do is :
    1. Go to system pref on mac
    2. Click on sharing - thick on "file sharing"
    3. Go to "option" and then thick on "share files & folders using AFP" & thick on "share files & folders using SMB (windows)"
    4. Dont forget to thick on you account name below...
    5. You're good to go...
    6. Please note that you have to know the PC Windows user & password that connected to the shared printer.

    Hello Greg & Hello PAHU...
Yesterday everything is fine for printing to windows shared printer. But after I update my XP, problems came up again....
And thanks to your link Greg, you are absolutly right about the driver...the problem is the driver...
And your link is solving  my problem (until know....) and you are right too PAHU, without thicking File Sharing feature in my Mac, I still can printing with windows shared printer...
And with this reply I admitted that my information above maybe wrong, and the real solver to my problem is to install gutten-print driver :http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
Thanks guys you're the best...now I live happily with my MBA

  • Windows shared folder asks for permanently delete

    Hi,
Any file from windows shared folder asks for permanently delete and after that it is not recoverable... Please help, how to enable recycle bin service??

    Hi,
This is by design the Recycle Bin only stores files deleted from local drives, not from a shared folder. The workaround is to move a folder in C:\users\<user name> to the shared folder.
For more detailed information, please refer to the thread below:
Files deleting over the Network /share drive is not going to the recycle bin it permanently delete the file but deleting from local drive is normaly going to recycle Bin !

  • Printing to a Windows Shared Printer in Windows Domain Stopped Working

If anybody can shed some light on the problem below I would be highly appreciative. I have tried every suggestion I've found on ways to fix this problem, including postings found on this forum, without success.
I use able to Print to a Shared HP Laser Jet printer one a Windows 2003 Server machine, which is part of a Windows 2003 Domain. It has been working faultlessly until about a 2 weeks ago. I have had a number of errors including unable to Connect but the Error I get constantly now is:
+Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...ERROR: Connection failed with error NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY"+
I have reset the password of the windows user that originally made the connection when the computer was set up and this password had special characters. After reading various posts I have tried:
    1. Reseting that users password without special characters, deleting the printer and adding it back in using the same user and the new password. The same user can map and connect to windows Shared Directories on the same Server and open and edit files
    2. I have reset the Keychain to make sure it was using the new password. Again deleted and re-added the printer.
    3. Created a new user both on the domain and one the print server deleted and re-added the printer using each user while also reseting the key chain
    4. Tried the Advance option on the Printer Setup Utility using the following SMB URL format,
smb://user:pass@Domain/Machine/Printer where, the domain is called "home", the machine name is "Devserver01" and the printer share name is "HPLaser" resulting in a smb URL of smb://shanep:xxxxx@Home/Devserver01/hplaser.
    None of the above work!
So as a new MAC user I have absolutely no other ideas of where to look for additional information on what is happening i.e. where do you look for log files that may contain additional detail.
Can anybody assist on suggesting any other things to look for or check?
    Thanks
    Shane

    Hi Greg,
Thanks of the tips. I have just managed to get it working and I didn't use the LPD method but tried a few different smb URI's.
    Here's what I found worked.
    1. I created a standard user account on the Windows 2003 server on which the printer is connected and shared, i.e. a non Domain user name that is local to the server only and not the domain
    2. I then used this user name and password, along with the IP address of the server in the URL i.e.
    smb://user:password@IPofserver/hplaser.
    3. Printed a test page successfully
I then tried variations of a theme using username and passwords on the domain, changing the @workgroup/server/printer with no success.
I could however replace the IP address with simply the @Server/Printer combinations using he local user name and password successfully.
I also installed apple and Unix printing and file services so whether this made the difference I'm not sure.
Interestingly I tried to add the mac to the LDAP/Active Directory and couldn't successfully bind to the directory. Not that I'm an AD expert, but I have configured a few Java applications to use LDAP/AD authentications and groups of late so this problem is a little unusual, but that aside, thanks for the pointers, Printing problem solved. now to solve the AD one

    Hi there,
this is a Family Sharing question. After we upgraded to family sharing, and I now have a new apple id, I find that all the documents on my iPad in pages,  are only accessible if i sign in with the original apple id- now my husband's ( he is the primary account holder). Is there an easy way to migrate these documents to my iCloud account, or do i need to email them to myself . There are a couple of hundred documents.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thankyou for the reply.
No. I have tried twice. When I turn off pages in the iCloud settings while logged into his account, then my documents in pages just are gone. They return when I turn it back on.
Is there another way I can save them to the device?

  • Printer Sharing and Windows Sharing with Windows Vista

Today I tired setting up a printer sharing network over my linksys wireless router. I turned the printer sharing on and the windows sharing on my mac. Then I launched my notebook with vista on it and installed Bonjour for Windows 1.0.3. Once the installation finished I ran the wizard and installed the shared Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer.
Once I finished the wizard I gave the printer a go.
I tried printing a word document on my Vista machine using the new wireless set up and nothing happens the printer queue gains the document spools it and then it's gone. Then, I tried using Vistas Sharing set up. After setting up another printer icon (the same printer). When I go to print I get an error message.
Also when I try accessing my shared folder from my vista machine. I use my Username and password for the login. The computer responds that my Mac Mini's username and password is incorrect. Thus, I cannot fileshare between by Mac Mini and my Vista Laptop
What can I do to get my printer sharing and my windows sharing set up to work.
(also, my Epson Stylus Photo 1280 Printer is hooked up to my mac mini through USB).
    Please respond
    Thank you

  • What is the best way to export a .csv/.txt file to a MS Windows shared folder via a scheduled job?

What is the best way to export a .csv/.txt file to a MS Windows shared folder, when the export process is a scheduled job?

You can't directly, as scheduled jobs can only export to server-side data stores, which can only write to the landing area. You'll need to use an external script (e.g. batch file) to move the file from the landingarea after export. You can use an external task in the scheduled job to invoke the script.

  • Windows Sharing Password.. Lost / Forgotten.. Administrator account..

HI.. I thought i would connect up my old G3 iMac running 10.4 Tiger to my Win7 laptop via ethernet crossover and move everything over i wanted to save by browsing the files and folders.
Connected the iMac and the laptop and i can work from the iMac sending files over to the laptop but i cannot remember ever setting a password as administrator on the iMac for my account for windows sharing.
I have a second account on the iMac for friends or guests to use and i logged in and that is the same as the loggin password but for my account my admin password is not recognised.
    http://www.fort-delce.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/images/win-share-pass.jpg
Is there a way to reset the password or a workaround to delete the keychain if possible. I've been sat at the keyboard trying every possible password i might have used but i'm sure i never set one.
    Paul.

    Hi BDAqua...
I read up a little on your suggestions for resetting / creating new admin account and decided not to try the New account route. There seemed to be issues with losing accounts and files and ending up with an "as new" mac and that was too big a risk..
All i wanted to do was reset the windows sharing password and there seemed to be NO method of doing this within the sharing preferences window despite being logged in as the Admin for the account. So I moved a few files over to another account on my iMac and started the transfer but this was time consuming.
Having just searched the Apple help docs i found a simple answer.
    *Change my admin password*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8202.html
+If users can’t connect to the Mac from the Windows computer using the user account you specified, you may need to reset the password for that account in Accounts preferences.+
So with a new admin password on my account the windows sharing password was reset to the new admin password and I'm good to go..
Many thanks for your help and suggestions.. It didn't fix my problem but reading a few of the links has shown me how to make my mac safer for the future. I didn't realise that it was so easy to overide the account password.

  • Windows Sharing "Accounts..." passwords do not reset?

I am trying to connect my PC to my Mac and it seems to work fine for my laptop but not for my G5 tower. So, I went into my sharing preferences on my G5 and checked that my Windows Sharing was turned on, it was. Then I clicked on the Accounts... button at the bottom right (while selected on Windows Sharing) and there was a list of all the Mac user accounts. This page states...
"Sharing with Windows computers requires storing your password in a less secure manner. You must enter the password for each account that you want to enable."
My administrative account is already selected, so I try to deselect it and it asks me for my password...
"Enter Account Password - Enter <Name>'s password to disable Windows Sharing for this account."
When I enter it in, it says "Incorrect Password" when I am sure it is the correct one. Why does this password not work and what can I do to reset it?
This seems like some sort of Apple bug to me?

Yeah, I assumed the password should be the Administrative password, but that is not working and I have tried multiple times so I am sure I am entering it correctly.
I can't connect to any windows shares because of this problem. So I am sure that there are no "shares mounted".
I mentioned that it is working on my laptop. So when I go to this same account settings area on the laptop, the admin password does work for this same setting.
I basically need some way of resetting this windows share account password from a different place? Does anyone know where I can do this? a preference file maybe or a plist file?

  • Accessing Windows shared printer, no GIMP driver for Canon iP3000. Options?

I checked a few pages worth of threads but couldn't find a solution to my problem.
Finally accessing my Windows shared printer. I have a Canon iP3000 and it doesn't print when I use the generic driver. I tried selecting the GIMP "Canon BJC 3000" driver but the prints end up shrunken to about a quarter of the paper size (8.5"x11"), my paper was set up and configured correctly. Any options for correcting this?
I had planned on connecting the printer to my MacBook Pro but all the support I could find was for sharing from Windows, so if anyone knows a good resource for such a setup, that'd help too.
