Windows shutdown

Hi, I have Windows 8.1 Pro sometimes in a shutdown process, Windows hangs, i am afraid to shutdown on power button because i may corrupt the hard disk.

Hi,
I recommend you install latest Windows Updates and install latest drivers for all devices connected to the machine.
Meanwhile please close all running applications including background running applications before shutting down the machine in case some programs might block the shutdown process.
Run virus scan and perform maintance task for your system such as disk cleanup to improve the performance of your machine.

  • Windows "Shutdown" function doesn't work properly

My windows shutdown does not respond. I can only shut down through manually pressing the power button or through Log off-change user-windows shutdown-shutdown.
    Help pls.

    Hi
Its not easy to say why the shutdown function doesnt work properly.
But mostly the wrong or damage registry entries are responsible for such issues.
You can try to use the system restore tool to roll back the OS to the early point.
Additionally you can check the Microsoft document which describes shutdown problems in Windows XP. Its useful. Check it.

I know that in Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition this problem is solved with the following registry key:
    ORA_SID_SHUTDOWN: TRUE
I verified this key in XE registry and it does not work.
Has anybody noticed this problem and solved it?

Shutting down the service manually works correctly
and using sqlplus (shutdown immediate) works too. I
also tried oradim -SHUTDOWN... All these options work
correctly...That means we are on the right way detecting problem - only nor solution...
The only thing that does not work is the
shutdown/reboot... it looks like if the service would
not receive the order to stop when there is a system
shutdown or ignore such order...Well one thing can be that your XE instance doing heavily job at the moment of receiving the order to stop => monitor instance
But, I suppose that Windows parameter setting must be changed more. As I said, at the moment, I can't help you more about that - I don't have Windows environment here.

  • Suggestion: Firefox should not hold up a windows shutdown with a multiple tab close dialog box.

I did not know where to send a suggestions, so am posting it here. Please redirect this to the appropriate place.
When I shut down windows and firefox is running with multiple tabs, it pops up a dialog box and prevents windows from shutting down. Last Friday I set the computer to shutdown before leaving work and found that it was still on when I returned to work on Monday. Reason - Firefox.
I prefer to shutdown computers when I am away for extended period of time to save power.

I do not have AVG installed.

Is this a Windows issue a do I need to make an adjustment in the BIOS ?
The previous install of Windows did not have this problem.
    Thankyou for any help.

interesting... I wonder why your first Windows installation did not install to ACPI Computer...

    hi matthew737,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Are you shutting down the System like this?
    1. Pull up the Chams Bar on the right hand side.
    2. Press the Power Icon
    3. Click on shutdown
If NO -  Shut down should be on this method, Try it and see if that fixes it.
If YES -  Try Disabling the fast start up
    Hope this helps

  • CEF Helper Application Error at Windows Shutdown

Every time I shut down Windows 8.1 I get the fol;owing error message BUT only if CC is still running.  "Adobe CEF Helper.exe Application Error.  The instruction at 0x5d76cad0 referenced memory at 0x5d76cad0 the memory could not be written".   If I close CC during my Windows session and even run up any of the three apps I have installed LR5, PSCC and Bridge the error at shutdown does not then occur.  Been happening some while but was hoping a CC update would fix this bug

Actually im having the same issue...  (different number 0x[etc] thing, though).

  • CUPC 8.0.3 busy status doesn't change to offline on OS (windows) shutdown

    Hi,
We found the following problem with CUPC8.0.3.
When you set the status to 'busy' or 'do not disturb' and you shut down or restart windows (without closing the CUPC program manually) the status doesn't change to offline (from the perspective of other CUPC users or the CUPS end user information page)
If the status is availabe it is going to offline when windows is shut down or restarted
Does anyone know if this is a defect...?
    Thanks
    rgs
    Luk

    Hi Luc,
Yes I managed to reproduce it in my lab as well. As soon as you login (after a shutdown) the user is shown busy again.
This is working as expected and it is a known behaviour. It is tracked by the following defect
    CSCsl11256
The thing is that a fix would require a lot of changes in CUPC architecture and there is no known date where this issue will be tackled.
This does not happen when the user is already in available status because the busy and 'do not disturb' require special handling
I hope this clarifies things a bit.

  • Script for performing clean shutdown before windows shutdown

I need a script to perform a clean oracle shutdown every time that windows going to shutdown.I need this to be sure that there wont be any instance recovery every time I startup the oracle(Mostly I fear from header inconsistency and ...).
Is there any thing that I can deploy for my development sites?

Above scripts used for Oracle 9i or higher versions.
Well, you can also do these with autostart parameter in the regedit.

  • Window shutdown when using java

Greetings, since a short time i've having probs when using the java.
For a time all goes well, but then the IE window just shuts down.
    No warning or whatever....
    Anyone any ideas?
    Tnx in advance

Possible a bug, probably and more likely something is corrupted. Not much you can do short of trying to reinstall if there are really no errors or dumps present. You should look in your System -> application log file first to see if there are in fact errors you are not seeing.

  • Windows 2003 R2 Gray Screen Hang on HP DL380 G5 when restarting or shutdown after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update

I’ve 4 identical HP DL 380 G5 Servers with Windows 2003 R2 Std.  The 4 machines have the same Windows driver version and motherboard BIOS version.  2 have no problem.  2 have problems after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update!
After running for a few days from power-up, the 2 problem servers will hang at gray screen during restart.  After clicking for restart,
    - The Event Log service will stop normally so there is no more error log can be seen!
    - The IP ping to the server can still work.  The mouse pointer in Windows can still be moved.
    - The Windows shutdown gray screen can be shown.
    - [Ctrl-Alt-Del] has stopped to function.
Then the system just freezes at that status.  I can only cold-boot the system!
After power-up again, I can do the Windows restart / shutdown normally!  But after a few day of running, the above symptom repeats!  The symptom happened since I installed the Windows Update in Dec 2011.  It didn’t happen before that!
Anyone can give a hint on how to diagnose it?

    Hi,
In order to troubleshoot the server hang issue, you can first preform a clean boot on the problematic system.
    Steps:
    ====================
     1. Click Start->Run…->type
    msconfig and press Enter
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services
and Disable All third party Services
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
    4. Click OK and choose Restart
    5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs
If the server hang on issue still continues in clean boot mode, for the further troubleshooting, you may check in the Task Manager to see which process takes the memory resources.
Meanwhile, you can also use reliability and performance Monitor to track down what cause the performance issue.

  • Windows won't shutdown

When I try to shutdown or restart windows it freezes at "windows is now shutting down". I have reformatted and reinstalled windows, downloaded all updates, searched other forums\google for hours and still cant find a solution to my problem. Please dont post the windows shutdown trouble shooter website becuase I have tryed everything there. Hopefully someone can help.
ps-A little insight on the on-board lan thing, if I plug my cat 5 cable from the hub and wait about 15 seconds and then plug it back in it works. I have to do this after every restart/shutodown. Sorry I know thats kind of off topic just thought someone might find it interesting.

Ive done some searching and tryed more things but I am still having the same problem. I dont have ACPI section in my bios. I checked XPs device manager and it says ACPI Uniprocessor PC. So I went back to my mobo's user guide and it says in the bios there should be an option for ICPA function. Theres nothing like that in bios.
I have the most updated bios so that couldnt be it could it? Did something with my PSU go wrong? Why does windows recognize the ACPI function and not the bios?
    Thanks in advance!

  • 975X Platinum PowerUp - Windows will not Restart - only shutdown

I've had a MSI 975x Platinum Powerup for several weeks now and have a really annoying problem.
When booted and in Windows the system is pretty stable. I've even had some success at overclocking (up to 333 with an E6400). However, even when not overclocked it I select Windows Restart the machine will shutdown but will not POST on the restart. The machine just sits there with no video signal.
however if I do Windows Shutdown and the physically power the machine back on, everything seems okay.
This maybe isnt a big deal, but is very irritating. I've seen some passing reference to other members of the forums that have a similar sounding problem, but there are no details.
Could anyone tell me if this is a known issue, and whether there is a solution or not.
Is it the case that only some people have this problem or do all 975x users have it?
I've tried MSI support who just responded with a generic 'have you checked x,y,z' message.
have detailed some of the other components of my machine below - let me know if you need anything more
    Thanks in advance,
    James.
BIOS: 7.3 (7.1 and 7.2 had the same problem also)
    VGA Type:MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB
    CPU Type:E6400
    Memory Type:GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Power Supply Type:650W XCLIO X14 PSU
    Operating System:Windows XP professional

Hi, The only thing I need to change in the bios is to turn off 'spread spectrum' and run the memory @2.2v. I have found turning off speedstep and C1E made no difference for me. At 375 if you run the memory with the 1:1 divider it will be running @750 so you can manually select 4,4,4,12 for the memory timings. This will not help the restart problem though.
Having said that, any bios after 7.2 will alter your manual memory settings and if you enter the above ( GeILs recommended settings) it will change them to 4,5,6,12.......... Another bios quirk I'm afraid!
To get around this you can go back to bios 7.1 which leaves these settings alone. What I have found works well is to leave the divider option on 'AUTO' . This applies the 1:1.25 ratio, and leaves memory timings on 4,4,4,12 with the ram running @875 when on 350 FSB. I run this setting @ 375, but I put the memory timings on 'SPD' as the ram is then running @938. You can run up to 2.3v through this ram according to OCUK where I bought the memory which may help you get up to these speeds or tighten the timings a bit.
380 is about the fastsest mine will boot at and adding more vcore (up to 1.4v) made no difference to this. I have tried upping the pcie voltage (which is the chipset voltage on this board) to 1.6v, but this didn't help either! Some people seem to get over 400FSB easily and others seem to have hit the same wall as me. People who can attain the high FSB speeds don't seem to suffer from the restart problems either! WEIRD!!
Let us know how how you get on.

  • ITunes (Windows) does not quit properly

Closing windows version using "x" at top right corner of screen or selecting Exit from file menu makes iTunes clear the screen, but it's still runnning.
I have to do a ctrl-alt-del and then manually quit the process tree.
Otherwise, re-clicking on the iTunes shortcut or even doing a "Start->iTunes" will get you a spinning clock and then nothing on screen.
Windows task manager will claim it's running, but there is no interface.
Sometimes Windows shutdown is hung up because a program named (looks like about 20 open boxes but with an iTunes logo) is running, but will not quit.
itunes Mac on same network connection works flawlessly.
    Any suggestions?
    Win/Mac Mini Windows XP

Could be antivirus or malware, have you checked your PC for Viruses and ad/spyware? Also try disabling antivirus. you could run a check on windows and see if some files in windows is corrupt by running chkdsk/ error checking.
Open "My Computer" rightclick on your harddrive, hit properties and select the "tools" tab. under "Error Check" hit check now. you wll get a pop up basicly saying it will run when you reboot or something like that. hit OK and then reboot. the program will run after booting up, and when its done it will load windows.
