Windows stuck "between" desktops

I am trying to open a new finder window with two desktops active.  The window doesn't appear on either desktop, but does appear briefly when switching between desktops using Control arrowkey.    I've had this happen with programs as well.  I had Spaces active when I did my upgrade and this is like "ghost" spaces, stuck in the netherworld of cyberspace.  Sorry, I'm showing my love for scifi.  How do I fix this?

I've seen this a few times when Finder was assigned to "all desktops".  If this is the case, right click (cntl click) the dock icon > options > assign to none.

  • Items get stuck between desktops

Does anyone else have a problem with items getting 'stuck' between desktops so that you can see them as you move between desktops, but can't access them?
I created an e-mail by dragging a photo to the Mail icon in the dock, but nothing happened so I repeated the exercise. Still nothing happened. I then created the e-mail by copying and pasting the photo into a new blank e-mail and thought nothing more about it. But now, when I swipe between desktops, I can see the two e-mails, complete with photos but no text, straddling two desktops but can't click on them to delete them. If anyone else has experienced this, have they found a way to access the items?

I've found the answer to my own question in an answer by Captfred last year! I right clicked on the Finder icon in the dock, assigned the Finder to "None" desktops and then found lots more things that were hiding between desktops!

  • Finder stuck "between" desktops

I have a problem with a new iMac running OSX 10.7.3.
I have Finder assigned to Desktop 1.  Occassionally I will click on Finder in the dock and no Finder window appears (and I am not taken to Dekstop 1).  When I page back and forth between Desktops the Finder window will appear for an instant just before the sliding-left-and-right graphic effect is finished.  It's as though the Finder window is stuck in Limbo between the legitimate Desktops, or has no Desktop...  Going manually to Desktop 1 I see that Desktop 1 is empty - no Finder window.
    Anyone ever seen this?
I can go to Terminal and killall Finder, which fixes it for a few days, but I'd love to have a real fix.

  • Focused window/app between desktops

I hate the list of bugs that I've found on Lion.
I'm having more and more issues than before.
On Snow Leopard, when I was switching from let say PhotoShop (on a particular "space", as desktops were called before) to the Finder (on another specific "space"), the only finder window was automatically focused as were the selected files: cmd+delete was deleting directly the files, I never had to click on the window after switching from the two apps usin cmd+tab
On Lion, on the other hand, when I switch between PhotoShop and the Finder (with only ONE window opened), the window stays light gray (not focused) so when I cmd+backspace: nothing happens.
    Nothing?
Hum... if by any chance I have files on the desktop that are selected, I trash them.
Actually, the "window" that is selected when I swhitch is...the Desktop!!!
    How crazy it is!

    Glad to help.

  • How to keep new applications on top within windows 8.1 desktop

In previous Window versions when one opened applications such as word, excel or browser or snipping tool these applications stayed on top.
However, in windows 8.1 now when ne application is openned, one needs to minize other applications before starting to use it.  This is very non productive use of time and prevents swtiching between dpendent application, open version of documents, and
    images.
Please provide suggestions how to configure the system to enable latest application on top.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, you can keep new applications on top of all other windows on your desktop, even while you're working in other programs.
I would like to suggest you restoring healthy  by using this command: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth first.
Meanwhile, please ask on the following forum. This is where the Windows 8.1 experts answer questions.

  • Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database?  If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?

Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database?  If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?

While I agree with the direction of the suggestions with installing packages for X-windows, we do not have a blanket 'apply any package' recommendation.
In particular we do not support altering the kernel (although we do have exceptions which we review on a case by case basis).
Basically, if the you want to alter functionality that would not impact core functionality you are usually fine.
A good guideling is : The more dependencies that there are between the package / rpm you are considering using the higher the potential impact on functionality - meaning higher chance for problems
Note: We do use VNC including Real and Tiger regularly , but we have no hard recommendation on how you may want to use X-windows. I have never seen a limitation other than comments on bugs
or incompatibility within the X-window product itself with certain kernel levels.
Patching may overwrite some packages that you may install, however,  _depending on packages/rpms added_ there is also the possibility that you will break existing functionality to the point
that patching itself will fail ( we have already seen a few cases of this in which case the proper mitigation is to remove / roll-back any alterations to the ODA before patching, and then adding the packages/rpms
back after the patching is completed.
From what you are discussing the impact should be low without conflicts, but please consider the above, and if you have specific packages which you consider potential problems
please create an SR so that we can review packages / rpms on an individual basis.
Once again: the main criteria for not supporting rpms is regarding the kernel itself

  • Did Mavericks remove ability to drag files and apps between desktops?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and am trying to drag files and apps between desktops without the use of Mission Control. I used to be able to drag something to the edge of the screen, hold it for a split second and have it move over to that screen. This seems to no longer work in Mavericks. I wish Apple wouldn't remove the small things that makes OS X what it is. Now I am less productive because I cannot use this feature.

Apparently so. It looks like the only way to drag files between desktops is to use Mission Control, as evidenced by this Apple support document: "you can use drag and drop in combination with Mission Control to swiftly and easily move items among windows and workspaces." I have Mission Control set up as a hot corner, so I grab a file, drag it into the top right corner, drag it onto the other desktop, and then drop it in the destination window. It's not as easy as dragging to the edge of the sceen, but it's not too much more work.

  • Stream 7 and Windows with Bing window sizing on desktop

I really like the HP Stream 7 but the Windows 8.1 with Bing version of windows has a really irritating behavior on the small tablets it won't keep the size and position settings of many applications on the desktop. IE always opens full screen same with Windows Explorer and if you resize or position it the next time you open it it is back to full screen. This is the same behavior on the Streak 7, Toshiba Encore Mini or Encore 2 8 inch, Insignia 8 inch and may be the behavior of all the smaller tablets with Windows with Bing. The Toshiba Encore 2 10 inch behaves normally maintaining the window settings between launches, as did the 8 inch tablets running Windows 8.0 and 8.1 versions prior to Windows with Bing.
Can anyone suggest how to correct this on the small tablets with Windows with Bing

    jeffmdaemon wrote:
You are not wrong, a simple file explorer test resulted in my desktop remembering the windowed position instantly, while my tablet full screened itself every single time. Windows may tell itself to function a little differently as a tablet, the far majority of people would prefer windows to open maximised on a small tablet screen. In your case, the only reason you want it not to is because you are using a case that is not designed (or badly designed) for the stream 7.
I haven't found any reasonably affordable cases for the Stream 7 that offer full access to the screen there will probably be cases in the future that will.   I also picked up an toshiba encore 2 8 and that has a case that offers a fully exposed screen the Windows with Bing behavior is less of an annoyance but still an issue.   This is not so much an HP, Toshiba or any manufacture issue as a Microsoft error.  8 and 10 inch tablets with Windows 8.0 and 8.1 didn't behave this way.  I would like to find a "switch/setting" to correct this.  I use my Windows tablets more then half the time in desktop mode and it is a pain to have the new version of the OS take a step backward in usability I can't remember the version of Windows that didn't support size/position retention,  Win 3?.
Just checked Amazon and they now have a couple cases that provide full screen access so I ordered one.
But that still leaves me looking for the setting that makes the Windows with Bing tablets behave like the tablets with other versions of Windows 8.1 with respect to retaining window size and aspect

Could you say a bit more about this? Is this the first account on the machine? Did you delete the previous account? Does this account have admin privileges? How many accounts on the machine? How many admin? Do all accounts have (1) unique short user names (2) unique passwords?
When I re-booted I get to the log-in window, then I get the spinning beach ball. After a while the computer goes to the console window. I can log in, but I remain stuck in the console. How can I get to the desktop?
Do you mean that you login successfully from the login window or that you login successfully at the console? Are you logging into an old account or the new one?
Have you restarted from the install disk and repaired the disk? Have you repaired permissions? Do you have a backup?

    Never saw this before.
You probably wouldn't have to do an erase and install but rather an Archive and Install. Try booting from your install disk first.
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If that doesn't help, try deleting this file. com.apple.windowserver.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • When i use firefox 7 and click on the bookmark menu, it leaves an annoying image of the bookmark window on my desktop that I can't get rid of.

When I click bookmarks in the Menu Bar, it leaves an image or "print" of the bookmark window on my desktop. It does not go away after exiting Firefox. The only way I can remove this image from my desktop is to restart my computer. It is becoming a bit annoying. I should mention that this problem does not occur when using the bookmarks icon in the Navigation Bar which I never use because I prefer the other. This has been happening in Firefox 4 to 7, but never in earlier versions.

There is probably a glitch in Firefox's graphics hardware acceleration feature, which was introduced in Firefox 4. To turn that feature off:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the General mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This change should take effect after you restart Firefox.
If you miss (or think you will miss) the hardware acceleration feature, you could try updating the drivers for your graphics card to see whether that solves the glitch.

  • How can I obtain a complete Time Machine backup (about 300 GB), with Windows 7-Parallels Desktop, without the system re-booting automatically?

I have been operating my MacBook Pro 15" (Mac OS 10.7.5), with Windows 7 - Parallels Desktop, for about one and one-half years.  However, whenever I execute a Time Machine back-up, and leave the system to complete the process, I return only to find that my system has re-booted, long before the back-up is completed.  I do not use the auto-backup feature because I do not see how to change the shedule for backups away from the default schedule of hourly backups (too my stain on performance).  Is there something that I am missing in setting up for such a back-up?  I am currently operating away from home, using wi-fi for Internet access.
