Windows system questions

I've got an old Windows XP system that just doesn't cut it for Lightroom and I need to upgrade. I've been researching various systems and I'm trying to determine what the best system would be for Lightroom.
I've got a budget of about $3k to $4k for a new CPU. I think that should allow me to get a pretty good system.
Here's my questions:
1) Should I look at one of the "gaming" systems like the XPS or Blackbird, or are they not well suited to Photoshop and Lightroom?
2) Should I consider running the 64 bit version of Vista? Does LR & PS CS3 support 64 bit or will they support it soon?
3) I could get a Dell Precision workstation with dual Xeon processors for about the same cost, would it be better or worse than the XPS style systems?
For the moment I'm only addressing Lightroom, Photoshop and DW CS3. I realize that the 64 bit OS would probably not support some of my other software, but I'm not a gamer, so I don't really care if the latest "shoot-em-up" doesn't run.
I also realize that spending about $4K for a gaming rig will only get me a moderately fast system, but I don't have the $10K for a FalconNW tricked out box with liquid cooling and custom paint job. What's my best option that doesn't require a second mortgage?

Hi Bob,
Yeah, if you are looking at the latest/greatest already, than it would be hard to beat the specs. But you could still win handily on the over all price.
One of the things I am considering for my next system (with in 12 months) is a new HD scheme based on ssd. Here is my initial though on that topic so far:
A separate ssd for the following:
System Disk (32-64gb)
LR DB disk (16-64 gb)
pagefile disk (8-32gb)
would continue to use old fashion (external)HD's for data storage/backup
My main reason for this is 4 fold:
1) Heat generation
2) power consumption
3) disk access speed
4) size off disks vs overall size of case ( I like small cases)
My main imaging computer is only used for imaging apps. So I do not need a huge system disk ( I use a laptop for everything else) Prices are falling quickly on ssd's and the industry expects prices to be nearly half of todays prices with in a year (or so)
As for ram, do your home work. As of recently (this may change with intels newest offerings) Intel systems prefer higher bandwidth, while AMD systems like faster latency timings. Just getting higher bandwidth ram may not do as much as you hope. So make sure that you do your research for the complete system you want to build. I am no expert here, I just do LOTS of home work before I fork over cash for my parts.
As for processor, you mentioned not wanting to OC your system. Well, don't overlook this possibility. At least with AMD processors (again this is recent) you can go with a lower $ value (slower speed) processor and oc it mildly to meet the speed of the more costly, speedier, model. And this holds true for their higher end chips as well. As much as you can push a slower one you can push a natively faster one as well. All this can usually be done with nothing more that a good heat sink/fan. I have been running with 15% oc for the past year and have had no problems. ( and I am only using the stock heat sink/fan in a very small case, better cooling and bigger case I am sure I could safely do 25%+)
Just some thoughts...
oh, one other thing: Power supplies. Make sure you get one that is properly sized for you system. It will run more efficiently and save you bucks every month!! There are websites that give you details on how to calculate proper power supply size. Just don't get sucked into the bigger is better idea with them.

  • How to manipulate Windows System Variables using Java

    Hi There,
I want to manipulate Windows System variables (e.g. PATH, CLASSPATH) using Java program. Could anyone please let me know how it can be done in Java.
    Regards,
    Rakesh Nagar

This is not just a Java question. It has never been possible in any Windows program to permanently change the value of an environment variable. You can only change it temporarily, and when the process that changed it ends, so does the change to the environment variable. This has been true since environment variables were added to DOS in about 1983.

  • Does Installing Awesome WM also Install the X Window System?

I am trying to use Awesome WM as my window manager and installed it and it's dependencies using "pacman -S awesome". Does installing Awesome WM install the X window system as a dependency? I have not installed X separately and have been unable to start Awesome using startx after writing an .xinitrc file with "exec awesome" in it.
    Thanks.

The quick answer to your question is no. The package mainainers assume that you've followed the instructions and installed xorg-server etc. before you start installing stuff that runs on it. The good news is that installing xorg-server etc. will install almost everything you need for awesome.
Edit for clarification:  no one but you knows what X server you might be using. You'll probably use xorg-server, but there are other servers than that: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=87281
Presumably awesome will work with them too.

  • InDesign crashes every time you double click to open an .indd file on Windows system

InDesign crashes every single time you double click to open an InDesign file and has done so since replacement of the original version of InDesign introduced in the Creative Cloud launch.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I'd say it was unique to my system if I hadn't experienced the issue repeatedly on several different systems now.  You have to relaunch InDesign which then opens the file from recovery, so it saw the file you tried to launch in the first place.  This leads me to believe the problem lies with the file association registry of InDesign inside Windows systems.  I find it unbelievable that this problem still exists and remains unreported and that a solution hasn't been implemented by Adobe to rectify the issue.
The double click is a fundamental tenant of opening files on a Windows system in the same way a single click is on a Mac.  Does InDesign crash ever time a Mac user clicks to open their files, I think not.
Anyone got any ideas other than the obvious which is Adobe actually got their figure out and fixed it.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

    Hi Michael,
I'll give it a go.  Don't really like messing with the registry on Windows boxes.  Yes you can do it, but it can end up being a case of the operation was a success, but the patient died.
Just was rather hoping someone else had already experienced this problem and posted the registry tweak.  Didn't want spend hours reinventing the wheel.  Not because I'm lazy, but I have so many demands on my time that resolving a minor issue that effects me only seems like it should be pretty low priority.
The system I'm using is brand new, but the problem seems to have followed me regardless which may indicate that it is seated in my synchronization information somehow.  Really don't know how that could happen as I'm not an Adobe engineer or have the remotest idea where to even start looking.  So I think I'll mark your suggestion as the "Answer" and just learn to live with it.
Windows eh! Can't live with - can't live without it.  I'm sure Mac can be just as temperamental. Just have to chalk this one up as being just another ghost in the machine.
Thanks for all the advice you have kindly offered, much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

  • NO java control panel in windows system control window

    Hello together,
there seems to be a bug/feature (?) not allowing me to use the plugin functionality of my J2EEsdk-1_4
    Situation:
Before i installed the J2EE i had an already installed java plug-in 1_4_2 working fine on
my Laptop giving my ms explorer 6.0 the Java VM needed. To avoid conflicts, i deinstalled
this plug-in, before i installed the J2EE 1_4_2. The result was disapointing.
There was NO java control panel in the windows2000 system control window after installing J2EE.
There was no corresponding registration key in the registry anymore.
Additionally there was no java related entrance to be seen anymore in the advanced internet and
security options of my ms explorer 6.0.
i have have found several trouble reports mentioned similar problems during the last months but unluckily
    no solution working for me.
i did several tests with different java packages i downloaded today to get the actual versions
    First:
i deinstalled the J2EE (not to get version conflicts) and installed the Java Plug-in 1.4.2 again.
This was proposed from ms explorer, when i tried to open an internet page with javaplugins included.
This plugin worked fine again. I could see and use the java panel and it enabled
my explorer to use the java plugin.
    Second:
i deinstalled the Java Plugin and installed the J2sdk_1_4_2 instead.
The java plugin which is part of this package also worked fine.
    Third:
i deinstalled the J2sdk_1_4_2 and installed the J2EEsdk-1_4-windows.exe.
the same misbehaviour as mentioned before. No java panel icon can be seen
in the windows system control, now registration......
as a workaround i have installed now both, the J2eesdk (i want to learn about)
and some additonal 100 MB java plug-in to enable my MS explorer to display
    java applets again.
This is working fine again, but i really would prefer to have no need for two JREs.
    By the way:
When i first opened the java control panel of the Plug-in and deactivated the update
mechanism , this plugin got really angry immedialtely afterwards. As a result my
laptop rebooted without coming up again. i had to initiate another hard reboot to get
    windows back
i really would like to know , whats wrong me or the J2ee and i apriciate
    any hint.
    Best regards: yours aspirant

One thing you could do if you by all means want to have only one single copy of 1.4.2 on your system is to install standalone J2SE 1.4.2 (this will accomodate your Java console and browser plugin requirements) and then install Application Server only distribution (on the download page this is referred to as "Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8") and sample applications set ("J2EE 1.4 SDK Samples "). In this way you get full content you would get in J2EE 1.4 SDK and all the benefits of standalone J2SE 1.4.2 installation.
This is obviously more convoluted at installation time since there are 3 separate things to install, but it would seem to fit your requirements.
    Hope this helps...

  • Trying to Create a Catalog file using WSIM (Windows System Image Manager)

I have been looking online for a solution to htis problem for days and come up with nothing so any help would be amazingly helpful.
I have created a Windows 8.1 image which I would like to role out to all users within my company but when trying to create a catalog file I am getting an erorr message saying "Windows SIM was unable to generate a catalog."  It says "Mounting

    Hello,
I think we will need a lot more information to be able to really help you. A dump file would be a good place to start.
That said my first guess is that the internal reference counter is underflowing because you have more releases than requests. I would start by instrumenting your code and making sure you have exactly the same number of requests as you do releases.
    I hope this helps,

  • Error while integrating Windows System - Share into KM

    Hi Experts,
I am new to KM and there is a requirement of Integrating Windows System into KM.
    Portal System : a.xyz.com
    Remote System: b.xyz.com
    Share -
    b.xyz.com\d_share$
Both systems reside in the same domain and share is created on the remote system which needs to be accessed from Portal. User xyz\Rob has given R/W access to the share.
    The steps I followed are:
    1. Created a Network Path.
        - Specified Network Path as given above.
        - Added credentials for xyz\Rob
    2. Created Windows System in KM Systems Landscape.
    3. Created File System Repository.
        - Specified Share as Root Direcory.
        - Specified Windows Landscape System as the system defined in the above step.
        - Security Manger as W2kSecurityManager
Now when I saved it, default trace logs are giving following dump :

    Hi,
Check whether you are able to access the same file share form the Portal server where your J2EE is installed.
And also if you have used
    b.xyz.com
d_share in the network path try using //b.xyz.com/d_share in the network path as mentioned here.

Solved! Music was in Itunes folder but not in Media folder within that. It doesn't seem like a very user friendly system so far!

    Hi,
It seems to be a system crash issue, we need to analyze the crash dump file to narrow down the root cause of the issue. Unfortunately, it is not effective for us to debug the crash dump file here in the forum. I would like to suggest that you contact Microsoft

  • How to install forms 6i runtime using windows Systems Management Server?

    Hi,
Our clinents are using oracle forms 5 application and we want to upgrade to forms 6i ( client /server ).
How to install oracle forms 6i and reports 6i runtime in multiple client machines
using windows systems management server instead of installing one by one manually.
    Regards

Here is a quick summary on why this works...
    The Problem:
The issue relies with the method and logic that MDT’s scripts use to query and validate that the proper disks, partitions and storage space reside before starting the installation of Windows.
Essentially what you have configured in the Task Sequence and the UNATTEND.xml is analyzed by the MDT scripts then a validation is completed against the hardware in which you wish to install Windows
on and if there are any errors you will be prompted with MDT Error or Warning dialogs.
The problem is that the MDT scripts use WMI to query the hard disk, partition and free space requirements for Windows, but in the case of using GPT disk, the 2nd partition (MSR) that you have to create
is hidden. The class that WMI uses for its query can’t see the MSR partition so instead of 3 partitions, it returns 2 in the query results; hence why DISK 0 PARTITION 3 doesn’t work as mentioned earlier when configured in the MDT Task Sequence.
Although the above still confuses me as to why it works with DISK 0 PARTITION 2 since the WMI query results return PARTITION IDs 0 and 1 when it should return 1 and 2…
The Windows Pre-Installation Environment however does see all 3 partitions correctly and we tried configuring in our Task Sequence to install Windows to DISK 0 and PARTITION 2 and in the UNATTEND.xml
file to install Windows to DISK 0 and PARTITION 3 but due to timing issues of the way Windows installs with MDT, did this not work for us.
