It is normal for the iPod to be seen as a camera since that is how one gets photo off the iPod. You can turn it off by:

To get iTunes to see you iPod see:

If you previoulys installed camera or scanner software that may be causing the problem.

Hi everyone. I've had my second generation iPod Touch for over 2 years now. I originally had it synced up with iTunes on a laptop running Windows Vista, and it worked perfectly. I then switched it to a new laptop, running Windows 7. That laptop let me transfer everything fine, and let me play, add and remove music and apps (in other words, it worked fine). Then, that laptop had some problems (the hard drive fried itself and I had to get it replaced.) When I got the laptop up and running again it was like it was a new laptop. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes (10.2.2 is what I have on here now) but the laptop is recognizing my iPod as a digital camera instead. To be clear, my iPod shows up in iTunes and I can play music, but it won't let me put the music from my iPod into My Library, and it won't let me add or remove songs. I've tried updating the drivers in my Device Manager but that seems to not work. I've also changed the Autoplay settings on my iPod, but that also didn't work. Please help! I'm getting to the point where I want to chuck my iPod out the window and just buy a new one!

1) From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

Connect to your computer and open iTunes. Look for your iPod under the Devices heading in iTunes sidebar. Select the name field and rename it as you would any file.
If you don't have a sidebar showing then select Show Sidebar from iTunes View menu.

Problem: Alright here it is, my Ipod and my sister's is not being recognized by Itunes. It is however recognized by my computer as a digital camera. If I shutdown my computer and then plug in my Ipod while its off into the computer while its turning on its recognized. However, it won't sync saying "the ipod cannot be synced. the disk could not be read from or written to." Now it trys to sync but my Ipod doesn't have syncing on the screen. My Ipod though will be recognized by other computers.
Things I tried: All the steps on the apple page, please don't link me to the instructions again. I have uninstalled and installed Itunes soo mny times. Tried restoring it also, but couldn't finish the restore on my computer and had to use another one. Also I have tried plugging it in and out, using differant usb ports, pretty much everything with no success.

I know it is your first post so I'll offer a gentle reminder to start new problems as new posts and not hijack an existing thread. Your problem is different than the OP.
In your case, you need to disable the automatic camera notification. The help article how to that is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1857
The crashing part can be caused by an obsolete/incompatible driver on your PC. You will have to figure out how to update it so it doesn't crash or remove it entirely.

I think my ipod touch is set to camera mode and I need to switch it back. When I hoook it up to my computer it thinks I am hooking up a camera and wants to download pics. It used to read it as an ipod and automatically synch. Now it doesn't do that. HELP

When I first got my ipod, I would hook it up to my computer and it would automatically synch with my itunes. But then I took some pictures with my ipod and downloaded the pics. Now everytime I hook up my ipod to my computer, it reads it as a camera and asks if I want to download pics. It is driving me crazy. I haven't used my ipod as a camera since that one time, and I need to get it back to automatically synching when I hook it up. It's like it is not being recognized as an ipod. Is there something I can do to get my ipod out of camera mode and back to ipod mode. Also, i got a speaker system to hook up my ipod to and it is not "picking up" the ipod when I hook it up. the music will not come out of the speakers and I think again it is an issue of my ipod being in "camera" mode. I connected a new 2nd iphone to my laptop. When asked to setup as new or to restore from backup, I chose restore because I thought it would load all of the apps and their relevant data faster. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have done that. My 1st phone is my work phone and now my 2nd phone (personal) has my work Exchange information loaded in it and they are both syncing my personal phone number it seems. Maybe I should have set it up as new? How do I change that?

If you don't transfer the backup for your other iPhone or leave it as is, you must set up and transfer everything manually after restoring your new iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

It would probably be best to attach the iPod to a computer and restore it. This way you'll know it's wiped clean. Then, when you start up the iPod it will ask you for your Apple ID.

PC thinks my iPod Touch is a camera

Whenever I plug my iPod Touch into its USB port, the PC (which is running WindowsXP) gives me a window with 3 choices. I can either "launch" 1) the ABBYY FineReader (which looks like scanning software), 2) the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard, or 3) Picassa 3. I suppose there is a 4th choice which is to do nothing and that's what I usually do.
I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5, which might've been a mistake. I don't recall whether my iPod showed up under DEVICES with the previous version, but I don't think I ever had any trouble finding it. Now, DEVICES doesn't even show up on the left-hand column in iTunes. I followed some instructions that were suggested for a question similar to mine. The result was that iTunes wanted to "Restore" my iPod, i.e. restore it to its factory settings and (I presume) wipe out any apps or content I already managed to put on it. It didn't show the "name" of my iPod or any other information about it, like I remember seeing on a similar screen on my PC before (most likely in the previous version of iTunes).
If I look under My Computer in Windows, the iPod is visible and even shows the "name" we gave it the way iTunes used to. The trouble is that My Computer recognizes it as a "Digital camera." If I double-click on it, I see the two pictures I've transfered from the PC to the iPod but nothing else. If I try dragging an mp3 file into that window, nothing happens.
So I suppose I have 2 questions:
1) How do I get my PC to recognize my iPod Touch as an iPod instead of a camera?
and
2) How do I get DEVICES to show up in iTunes without wiping out the existing Apps and downloaded content?
What I would really like to do is move some music and some podcasts from my PC to the iPod Touch, but right now all I can move are pictures. That is why this question has the title is does and I'm hoping answers to the above questions will allow me transfer mp3 files, which is my ultimate goal.

I went to the link you posted and followed all the steps. I was thrilled to see that it worked! I don't recall whether my PC still recognized my iPod Touch as a camera or not, but DEVICES did show up in iTunes and it recognized the name of my iPod Touch.
Now, though, everything is back the way it was. The PC tells me I have a camera connected via USB and iTunes doesn't even have DEVICES listed in the left-hand column.
I'm wondering if this is the problem: I had the iPod on until the battery was so "low" that it stopped. I didn't press and hold the button on top. In fact, until I read the article you linked to, I didn't even know you could turn the iPod on and off that way. I would only press it once until the screen turned blank and simply pressed the Home buttom to turn it back on. Until I read that article, I thought the Home button was the On button.
So now my question is this: Should I ALWAYS turn the iPod off by pressing and holding the button on top until I see the red slider on the screen?

     My iPod touch is always recognized by my Vista Box...using the same USB cable and port my wife's nano isn't detected anymore. Since Vista can't see the nano iTunes can't see it either. When I try my wife's nano I get the message:
     "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows doesn't recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
     I thought her nano wasn't charged enough but I've charged it for hours and this doesn't make a difference. It used to synch like my ipod touch but it stopped working about a week ago. My wife's nano still holds songs and works it just can't be recognized by Windows. I even checked if the Apple Mobile Device app was running and it was and I stopped it and restarted it. Didn't make any difference. Any ideas?
