Windows thumbnail for PSD files

Hi everyone,
Until a few days ago, PSD files never did have an icon in Windows Explorer. But now I have this :
(I pixelated the file names so this is normal.)
What is not normal, or at least, what I don't understand, is how the file thumbnail was created. It doesn't appear on all files, and disappears (reverts to the PSD icon such as the one at the top of this image) when I save the file. As I don't constantly monitor the desktop, I can't tell when the thumbnail is generated, but it can take hours, or never come back by itself.
So I wondered, what does generate the thumbnail, and if so, how can I enable imemdiate thumbnail generation ?
Configuration :
Asus G51Vx - Intel C2D T7500, nVidia GTX 260, 8GB RAM
Windows 7 x64 Business
Adobe CS5
Thanks in advance for your answers, any help is appreciated.

> So I wondered, what does generate the thumbnail, and if so, how can I enable imemdiate thumbnail generation ?
I have seen this behavior when a 32 bit thumbnail provider is installed on a 64 bit system.  Thumbnails will only be generated when the folder is viewed from a 32 bit app--usually from a File Open dialog.
Since your system is 64 bit, there isn't a way to enable immediate generation by a 32 bit provider.  You'll need a 64 bit provider such as our PSD codec, which was mentioned already.  http://www.ardfry.com/psd-codec
I agree that a commercial codec is a difficult purchase if you are not a professional and your time is not valuable.  If you are a pro, then the codec should quickly pay for itself: it should be a straight forward business decision.

  • Thumbnails For QuickTime Files In Windows XP?

Windows XP shows thumbnail previews of video files in Windows Explorer. However, it doesn't show thumbnails for QuickTime files. Does anyone know why this is? Does Windows Vista also share this problem? Is there a way to add this feature to Windows XP?

One other thing to explore - do these particular files begin with Black Video?

  • Thumbnails of psd files in Photoshop Elements 11

  • No Thumbnails for AVI files in organizer

My AVI Video clips are not showing thumbnails in the PSE 11 Orgazizer.
Here is what I have observed as I have been troubleshooting this:
    The files are MJPEG.
When I double click on it in the organizer window, I get audio, but no video.
If I open the file for edit in Premier Elements, the video thumbnail shows up in project assests and the video correctly plays in the Premier Elements editor.
If I double click on the files in Windows Explorer they open up in Quicktime Version 7.
The thumbnails for the files show in up windows explorer when I browse to the folder they are in.
I selected a file in PSE, chose 'Export to New File" and the file that I created by doing that showed a generic Quicktime icon without the thumbnail in windows explorer. When I double click on that file it correctly plays in Quicktime.
Selecting "Update Thumbnail" has no effect.
Thumnails are corrctly showing for .mov, .mpg and .mp4 file types.
Any one have any ideas what is going on with the organizer that might be causing this beavior or is this a know limitation of PSE Organizer. What is the point of having the organizer supporting video If I can't see the video without opening it in the Premier Elements Editor?
I am providing the "Systems Info" if that helps anyone.

I do not use Organizer, but instead Adobe Bridge (included with some other Adobe programs, like Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro), or ThumbsPlus (Cerious Software), and find that some AV formats/CODEC's just do not display thumbnails. I have had that issue with some, like MPEG-1 files, some WMV files, almost anything with DivX, or Xvid.
I have not used any MJPEG files, so cannot comment on them, but have helped others Import and edit those (never tried to work with any in Organizer, Bridge or ThumbsPlus), and in those cases, it usually boiled down to having the exact MJPEG CODEC installed. As each camera mfgr. seems intent on tweaking the MJPEG CODEC, it is normally possible to Import and edit, if THAT particular MJPEG CODEC is installed, and usually from the camera's utiltiy disc. Other times, the generic Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC's have worked - though that seems to be less often, as Nikon, Panasonic, and others, keep tweaking.
As for the display of any problem AV files, it is usually an inability of the organizing utility to find a proper display, though in some cases, there IS a display, but the first Frame of the AV file is black, with a Dip-to-Black (in this case basically a Fade-in) Transition.
Good luck, and I wish that I had a fail-safe way to always display a thumbnail for ALL AV files, and even better, the ability to set the Poster Frame to what I wanted. So far, no organizer utility, that I have seen, can display thumbs for ALL AV formats - some will handle some AV formats/CODEC's, that others will not, but none has been perfect.

  • PSE 12 Has stopped showing thumbnails for new files

PSE 12 has stopped showing thumbnails for new file imports. Have  Windows 8.1 update

In the PSE12 Organizer, the last files imported show an hourglass thumbnail. I am importing from the camera card. Other images have the correct thumbnail. I see the spinning icon on the lower bar showing it updating the catalog. Thank you for your assistance

  • Thumbnails for mkv files

After installing Perian and Movist (a video player software), I believe that I have solved most of the problems for mkv files in Leopard. I can play .mkv videos in either Quicktime or Movist, and I can tap the spacebar to quicklook the video when browsing in Finder. But one thing that I cannot change is that the thumbnails for these files remains a generic icon, unlike .mov files that have thumbnails of the screens of the movie. Thus when I'm browsing with cover flow, I can only quicklook the mkv files in pop-out window, rather than playing it in the upper part of Finder as what I can do with .mov or .avi files.
Is there anyway to improve this? I know Mac may not support .mkv files as good as .mov, so I'm wondering if there's any third party softwares that I can rely on to resolve this problem? I'll be grateful if somebody could shed some lights on this.

Hope someone knows it. Thanks again!

  • Cs6 bridge not showing thumbnails for raw file

    Just upgraded to CS6
cs6 bridge not showing thumbnails for raw files.
Can see thumbnails in CS5.1 bridge  and LR 4.2 which fortunately i did not uninstall.
Bummer since I am up against a hard deadline.
    Really Sucks

We can't know. You are not offering any system information or e.g. info about what image files you are working with. Since they do show up in your otehr programs, my assumption would be that you need to switch the Camera Raw engine back to the 2009/2010 version in Photoshop and not use the default new 2012 one. Perhaps your thumbnails will appear then....

  • I don't see thumbnails for PDF files in my Windows Explorer

    Hi,
When browsing through my File Manager to look for files, I used to be able to see a thumbnail of any PDF files I'd saved.
I can still see the old ones created earlier, but my more recent files just show a black square with the Adobe 'A' in bottom right hand corner or sometimes a large Adobe 'A' on white field with "PDF" in top left corner.
Seeing a thumbnail I think helps to find your file. Does anyone know why I don't get them any more or how to get them back. (The save a thumbnail option is checked for normal word docs, but not visible when saving as PDF.
I am using Mic Office 2010 (Word) to save as PDF. My computer is Windows 7 64bit.
Interesting, I can see a preview of PDF files which is a help, but not individual thumbnails for my more recent files....can still see them for older, longer ago saved PDFs.
    Added info:
Just checked, I last had thumbnails in December 2011, January 2012 I stopped getting them.
Tried to insert a picture to show you what I get in explorer, but just get a big dark grey square so I'll explain. Just worked out the following.
Prior to end of 2011 my PDFs have a thumbnail.
After that I just have a black square with the Adobe 'A' in bottom right hand corner if I create PDF with Word
If I do 'Save As' while in the reader I get a large Adobe 'A' on white field with "PDF" in top left corner

NO, NOT THAT SIMPLE, now I find some normal thumbnails later in 2012, so the behaviour is changeable!!!!!

  • PSE4 - No thumbnails for .TIF files (Fuzzy TIF problem?)

My PSE4 newly installed on my Win XP. But, I just catalogued the first 100 of my black-and-white photos into the PSE Organizer. These were all a standard format of 4x6" at 300 dpi gray scale files. But, while the .jpg files show thumbnails in the Organizer, the .tif thumbnails show up as black rectangles. Still these .tifs can be viewed in the PSE editor, and when I resave them as a .psd file, a thumbnail shows up in the Organizer for the .psd. (Oh, an attempt to resave the original file in PSE as .tif didn't help).
Post script -- I just tried to catalogue a few of my more recent 4x6" gray scale .tif files as I described above. I noted that the thumbnails for the .tif files showed up in PSE Organizer for just a second or two, and then promptly changed to black rectangles. Interesting
But I have hundreds of such .tif photos still to be catalogued: (1) Am I going to have to resave each file as .psd, and (2) is there any downside to .psd as long as I'm using Adobe software? I just noted that my online photo processor (Fuji) doesn't accept .psd files.
I saw in the forum about PSE4 encountering the "fuzzy .tiff" problem but couldn't find a full explanation anywhere. I had the impression that not all .tiffs are created equal! I think most of mine were created by Adobe Photoshop 7 that I once had access to. I'm really worried that PSE4 is not going to work out for me.

I don't use Windows, so I don't know if you'll find anything helpful, but I'm sure you'll at least get some comfort from knowing you're not the only person experiencing a problem with TIFF files in PSE 4.0. :(

  • Creation of previews/thumbnails of PSD files not working in v3.0.1

I'm using Aperture 3.0.1, PS 4 to edit photographs.
My workflow will be the usual, Photo > Edit with Adobe PS, in my Aperture browser thumbnails/previews will be created for the PS file.
When I save my work in PS, the thumbnails and previews in Aperture are not being updated properly, show horizontal magenta/cyan lines, noise, clearly some of the layers are not being processed, some layers are not being resized to the right preview format, it's a complete mess.
I tried to delete/update previews, no difference.
It's an absolute shame, this worked perfectly in Aperture 2.1 and is absolutely necessary in my workflow. I'm seriously thinking to go back to 2.1.
Anyone with suggestions to get this working? Thanks

Having some similar problems and unfortunately some different ones as well...
I would love to know any tips you might have in identifying the "faulty" PSD files that Aperture 3 cannot deal with or more like the the PSD files that FAULTY Aperture cannot deal with (they worked fine in 2.1.4, Preview, iPhoto, etc).
I ask because the problem I have is that as soon as I hit one file that never finishes generating a thumbnail for, then I am done since everything else just queues up behind it and I can't diagnose anything else. As I said in an earlier post, HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO INCLUDE USEFUL DIAGNOSTIC INFO IN THE "ACTIVITY WINDOW", so that we could tell which images are being "processed" (or more importantly not being processed).

  • Photoshop CS6 colors have shifted for PSD files; no longer match Bridge colors, resulting jpg colors off too

Until last night, Photoshop has been working relatively well** (see below) However, I processed a batch of DNG files through Bridge and saved them as PSDs.  When I opened up the new PSD files in PSCS5, the colors had shifted - more green, less saturated.
I went back to the DNG files and opened each up separately in PS - the color looked good.  I edited them, saved them as PSD files, and reopened them in PS - the colors were bad.
I cleared the Preferences (by holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift) when restarting PS.  Although it cleared up the pre-existing issue explained below **, it didn't fix the issue with the colors.
I rebooted my computer.  No luck.
I looked for available updates. None available.
I recalibrated my monitor (ColorMunki).  No luck.
I don't know what I did/what happened to cause the problem.  The day before, everything was fine.
I tried to fix it by experimenting with option under View.  The closest I could get the colors to matching those shown in Bridge was to set  View--Proof Colors-- Monitor RGB.
But here's the kicker - when I did a "save as" in PS the resulting jpeg had the same gross color shown in PS before setting the proof colors to Monitor RGB - and the jpeg colors are gross in Bridge and PS!  The same thing happens if I run a batch of PSDs via Bridge and save them as jpegs.  The resulting jpegs look gross in both PS and Bridge.
    HELP!
I'm using a PC with Windows 7.  All the images jpegs, DNG and PSD are in the RBG color space.

  • Bridge CS6 not generating correct thumbnails for RAW files

I'm running Bridge CS6 (the latest version, 5.0.2.4) on a 2013 MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.1) and suddenly as of today Bridge is no longer updating the thumbnails for my RAW files. All other image and video file formats are having thumbnails generated but not my Nikon NEF raw files including those which I have previously worked on in ACR. I have tried purging the entire cache, restarting Bridge and even rebooting my computer and still the raw thumbnails are not being generated.
Any advice would be appreciated thank you.
    Eric
Actually I've just noticed that thumbnails for jpegs are not being generated either. A thumbnail is only generated if I work on a file in Photoshop and then save it.

Check you cache disk free space.  You should have at least 15%.  For a 700g drive that that 100g free.
Have you reset preferences?  Hold down option key and start bridge.  You will get a reset window.

  • How to make PSE default for .psd files

    Hi all
I have both PS CS2 and PSE9 installed on my MAC pro, running the latest version of Snow Leopard.  If I click to open an image with a .psd extension, the system automatically launches PS CS2.  I would like the system to recognize PSE9 as my default for images.  I looked all around system preferences yesterday, but couldn't find anything. I'm sure I'm missing something.....  Thanks.

Find a closed psd file. Click it once to highlight it and press command+i for the Get Info window. Under Open with Application choose PSE, then click Change All.

  • Why can't I see the Finder thumbnails for .mov files with alpha channels?

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I haven't been able to see the thumbnail for or preview using spacebar any .MOV clips that contain alpha channels in Finder. PSDs and PNGs with alpha channels are fine, and I can still see their thumbnails and previews, it's just .MOV clips with alpha. Here are a couple screenshots:
Most of these clips are using a PNG codec, but I converted on to the Animation codec and tested it in After Effects to make sure it kept the alpha channel and it did, but the same thumbnail error persists.
Any idea why this might be or how to fix it?

ok, have copied the photos again from the memory card and hey presto, it all works fine.  So in summary...for RW2 files from GF1 camera, I have no thumbnail images, couldn't view in Preview, and neither Quickview nor Coverview were working.  Ran the bit of code provided at "https://discussions.apple.com/message/18369759#18369759" (thanks to Snoop Dogg) and then recopied the photos onto my Mac (only required for photos copied since upgrading to Lion, everything from before the upgrade is fine anyway).
    Hope others find this helpful.
