Windows to Mac Migration

I work for a computer services company that has recently had the fortune of switching several of our business customers over to Macs. The only complaint I have about the migration process involves Mail.app. If there is an easier way to export mail from Outlook Express / Outlook / Windows Mail and import it into Mail.app, somebody please let me know. For now, here is our (painstaking) process:
Install Thunderbird on Windows
Import (program x) mail to Thunderbird
Wait
Copy Thunderbird profile to Mac
Drag profile onto Eudora Mail Cleaner
Wait
Launch Mail.app, configure mail settings
Rebuild all mailboxes
Drag mailboxes to proper location
Ideally I'd like a utility that can accept an Outlook Express store directory, an Outlook .pst file, and Windows Mail files (forget the format momentarily) and import them into Mail.app in one step.
Is there some great utility out there that has flown under my radar up until now?
Thanks!

Look at a program called Email Alchemy

I used it when I converted from linux to os x. It may do what you want.

  • How to migrate Library/DB from Windows to Mac

I am moving my photography business from windows to Mac (Vista convinced me). I already figured out how to get from adobe the Lightroom and CS3 licenses transferred, but I wonder how to deal with my pics? I have all my pics in a network hard drive and the library on my laptop with a backup on the network drive. My new configuration would be one iMac for doing all the work and one Mac Book for working on the road and sharing wit customers.
How to migrate my DB and photo collection?
How to set things up so I can use lightroom in both: My Macbook and the iMac? I ran a quick search and found many responses but I could not quite understand what needs to be done or confirm whether this scenario of two machines accessing same DB is supported for a NAS drive.
    Thanks!

Thanks Don, I am a writer and a photographer and probably not as savvy as you with technology or forums. I ran searches before posting my question, but nothing came back when using the keywords windows to mac, migrate DB, etc. So obviously I cannot even think about the right terms. Any link you can provide me with? So far after reading many posts around looks like LR will not work for my business because it does not support multiple PCs, but at least while I find another software solution, I want to be able to use my Macs with lightroom :-)

  • ITunes Migration - Windows to Mac

I just bought my MacBook Pro and could not be happier! I have a problem with iTunes that seems like it should be very easy to resolve...
I have read several Internet posts and can not find a fix. I was able to migrate all the iTunes information from Windows to Mac, but I cannot play any of the files because of the differences in the way both OS's view paths (directory structures).
I am using an external USB hard drive to store my .mp3's. This worked great in Winows, but I cannot seem to find a way to point the Mac iTunes installation to this external drive. Everything I have tried has failed, including modifying the .xml files in the iTunes directory on the Mac.
Some posts advise the Mac iTunes installation does not give users the ability to use an external hard drive and forces all iTunes music to be stored locally on the Macintosh HD. I cannot believe Apple would be this stupid. Say, "It ain't so..."
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Is it possible to modify the Library .xml file with Mac entries so it looks to the external drive for my music files?

I need to do it the hard way.
    Any reason why?
File -> Add to library will work just fine.
Make sure to change the location of the iTunes folder first.
Can you take the example I provided above and give me an example of a valid path to an external drive?
    Old =
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/E:/User/My%20Music/iTunes%20Music/Ryan%20Shupe%20&%20the%20Rubb erband/Dream%20Big/Ryan%20Shupe%20&%20The%20Rubberband%20-%20Dream%20Big%20-%200 6%20-%20Ambush%20%5BInstrumental%5D.mp3</string>
You only need to change the beginning of the path to the main folder where your music is.
    Search for
    *<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/E:/User/My%20Music/iTunes%20Music/*
    and replace with
    *<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Other%20Drive/iTunes%20Music/*
What you are replacing with is the path to your external, not what I typed.
%20 is simply a space in the path/filename.
As above, your music would be on the external drive named *Other Drive* in the folder *iTunes music*.

  • Migration from Photoshop Elements Windows to MAC

    Hi,
I don't know if this question is answered already somewhere in this forum. I started a search without results.
Maybe I'm wrong. If so, please apologize.
I used Elements for years on my Windows box. Recently I bought an iMac and would like to know if it's possible
to migrate my albums and all the stuff from Windows to Mac using the Mac version of Elements.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    ssv

The mac version of PSE has no organizer, so no, not directly. What you can do is to create tags for all your albums and categories, and then use File>Write Tags and Properties to File(s) or John Ellis's psedbtool to write the tags as metadata keywords that many mac programs, including Bridge (which you get with PSE/mac) and iphoto can recognize, but you will need to reestablish any hierarchies.

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

  • Migrating Applications from Windows to Mac with new iPhone

My original first gen iPhone died a horrible death a few months ago. I had always synced it to my Windows laptop. I just recently acquired a new iPhone and want to sync it instead to my iMac. However, I have a dozen or so iPhone applications that I still want and I cannot figure out how to migrate the applications that are recognized by iTunes on my Windows machine and transfer them to my iMac. I even attempted to download an application I already purchased from my iMac, and I was charged the fee for the iPhone application instead of it just recognizing i had previously purchased the application.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Connect the iPod to the Mac and restore it in iTunes. Restoring in iTunes for Mac will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the mac version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes

  • Migrating bookmarks from windows to mac

Can I transfer my bookmarks from a windows platform to a mac platform and if so how do I do it?

    Hello,
There are two ways of doing this:
    1. '''Firefox Sync''' - if you want to continue using both Windows and Mac versions of Firefox then you can use Firefox Sync to keep your bookmarks and other settings synchronised between the devices. See here for set up instructions: [[How do I set up Firefox Sync?]]
    2. '''Export as html and import''' - if you want to move permanently from Windows to Mac then I think the cleanest thing would be to export the bookmarks from Windows to HTML. Follow these instructions: [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]] then transfer the HTML file to your mac and import them into Firefox there. Follow these instructions for the import: [[Import Bookmarks from a HTML file]]
I hope that helps. Let me know if not.

  • Migrating from Windows to Mac, no loger have the Windows machine

    Hi All,
I have a two year old iPod that's pretty loaded. I originally had it set up with a Windows computer that I ripped all my CD's to. Since that point my Windows machine needed to be rebuilt so I lost all the iTunes stuff on it. I also recently got a MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to be able to use the iPod with the MacBook, but I don't want to have to reload everything onto it. So how can I take an iPod originally formatted for Windows and retrieve all the data so that when I plug it into the MacBook I won't lose everything. I don't mind if I have to wipe out the iPod and reformat it then reload the music. I just don't want to have to rip all my CD's again. If it's any help I do have a networked Windows machine available to help with this.
    Thanks,
    -Bruce
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Macs can read Windows formatting so you should be able to connect your iPod without any bother. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Once you are connected change the update setting to manual so you can use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc. then if you wish it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.

I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.
I am currently using Photoshop Elements 8 on Windows 7.  After several years of use, I am self taught and adequately proficient for an amateur.  What I didn't realize (until I started researching my upcoming migration on the Internet) is that I actually use PE8 for two functions: digital asset management and digital editing.
Regarding Digital Asset Management: My research leads me to understand that PE on MAC does not provide the same level of organizational capability that I am used to having on Windows, instead providing Adobe's Bridge which does not look very robust.  Furthermore, iPhoto, which come on MAC will not support the hierarchical keyword tagging that I require to organize my library of photos. The two SW applications which I am thinking of switching to are either Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom.  Frankly, I'm thinking that it would be smoother to stay within the Apple product line.
So the remaining question is whether Aperture will support my digital editing needs. The tweaks that I do to my photos are not very complex (no, I do not want to put people's heads on other animal bodies).  But could someone who uses Aperture tell me whether It will allow me to do the following kinds of edits?:
    - If I have a photo where someone's face is too shadowed, can I lighten just that person's face, and leave the rest of the photo as-is?
    - if I have a photo where the background is cluttered (eg, 2 people in front of the Parthenon which is undergoing renovation), can I remove just the construction cranes?
    - Can it splice together several separate photos to give a panoramic?
If, once I get Aperture, I find that it cannot enable the kinds of editing that I do, I would probably get PE11 in the future. However, if people in this forum tell me that Aperture will definitely not  support the kinds of editing which I've described in the previous paragraph, I would prefer to get PE11 with my initial configuration (since someone will be helping me with my migration).
Thanks in advance for your consideration and help!

I am concerned, however,  about using a non-Apple Digital Asset Manager in OSX. I would really like to avoid integration problems. Is using PE11 to import and catalog my digital photos likely to cause conflicts?
Thanks for any insight on this
    Amy,
Not so much conflicts as maybe a little less seamless integration with Apple software and perhaps some third-party software providers in the Mac App Store where some programs build in direct access to iPhoto and Aperture libraries for getting images into those programs easily. Typically, there is a manual command to go to Finder (think Windows Explorer) to browse folders.
One caution to mention however, is that the organization you set-up in PE Organizer is unlikely to transfer over to either iPhoto or Aperture if you decide to change at some point.
The only real stumbling block that I see in your opening comment is that you want hierarchical keywording (Kirby or Léonie can go into the details on keywording limitations as I stay at one level). If you can work with the keywording schemes of either iPhoto or Aperture, then using PE for your external editor (either program supports setting an external editor) would probably be ideal since you know PE well. This is the idea with the Mac App Store version of PE (editor with no organizer).
Note - I use Photoshop CS6 (full version) with Aperture and it works really well. The only downside is that Aperture has to make either a TIFF or PSD file to send to an external editor so that the original file is protected by not sending it to the pixel editor. While TIFF or PSD files protect the integrity of the image information without degrading it, they are typically much larger file sizes on disk than either RAW or JPEG files. Therefore, your library size (iPhoto or Aperture) will balloon quite a bit if you send a lot of files to external editors.
One other possibility for an external editor would be a program called Pixelmator. It is pretty similar to early versions of Photoshop, but built for Mac. Other than the panoramics you want, it will do most pixel editing that PE can do. It is not an organizer, so it is built to go with either iPhoto or Aperture. It does have differences in how you complete certain procedures, so there is bit of a learning curve when you are used to doing it the Adobe way.

  • How do i convert my music and pics over from windows to mac using a external hard drive.

New mac user.  How do i convert my files from windows to mac using external hard drive.  I am using a Seagate freeagent go flex.

leave as is and add NTFS driver to write to the drive / migrate maybe / reading NTFS drives isn't always perfect, some times external drive case has trouble mounting or staying mounted and suffers slow copy speed after awhile or with large files which is why I suggest Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X.

I want to get a Dell xps computer. I like vista, but Mac os x leopard is just insane. One of the adds said that I could transfer my files to mac files. This made me happy, but I'm not quite shure what he said. Could anyone give me any details on how to do this, what I will get ( does it include Ilife, Iwork etc.) and if it is trully free( any programs I have to buy inorder to convert the files to mac os x leopard.). Any additional information will be great. Thnx.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
see here for ways to migrate your files from Windows to Mac OSX http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518?viewlocale=en_US
Just for clearance: Mac OSX does not run on non-Apple computers.
So if you plan to use OSX Leopard on your new Dell, that won't work.
(Sorry if I misread your post, but somehow it sounds to me like you plan to use OSx on your Dell).

  • How tedious is it to convert from windows to mac?

My windows (sony vaio running XP) is dying.  Got the dreaded 3 beeps on start up today...so will be shopping for a new desktop soon.
I have an ipad and iphone that I've owned for about a year now...and I must say I REALLY like them.  Have been contemplating going all mac....but EVERYTHING i do on my desktop is obviously windows based.  My biggies are quicken....i have files that go back 10 years and all my excel docs.  Has anyone recently made the jump from windows to mac...how hard is it really to convert everything over?

Millions have done what you are contemplating, most don't have any issues at all. I f you haven't already go to your local Apple Store and ask your questions and you will get honest replies, I did when I made the switch 7 years ago. I converted from Quicken to iBank which imported my Quicken data extremely easily. As for MS Office, simply get MS Office for Mac and you're set. It's compatible with the Windows version and opening files is the same across platforms.
I would also STRONGLY recommend you look at this Apple Mac Basics article:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbasics/pctomac/
Also when you get a Mac and turn it on for the first time, one the steps it has is asking if you are migrating from a PC to the Mac. Simply choose yes and follow the on-screen prompts and you're set. You can also Google Migration Assistant for Windows for more detailed info if you want.
