Windows to Mac - OS or TM Lost File Structure (External HDD)

Damage control please.
I have an old Seagate One-Touch 150GB external drive I use to back up my old Windows machines.
I have (had) four machines backed up in there - 1 Windows Me and 3 XPs holding business and personal files for the last 8 years.
I needed a file and since my Vaio laptop broke down I connected the Seagate to my MBP for the first time.
The Seagate showed up fine, double-clicked it and began looking for my file. No problems until...
I clicked an old MP3 to listen to it, iTunes came up. No biggie yet. Then Time Machine came up asking me if I would like to use my Seagate as back-up. I clicked O.K. and made sure no formatting or erasing happened.
Suddenly OSX alerted me that the USB hard-drive was not ejected properly. I though it was a faulty USB cable. But after a dozen tries and reading two hours of 'Apple Discussions' and web searches I find myself without a clue how to recover my files without recurring to a $100+ service or software recovery solution.
All I did was look for a file and play a song! Please help.
I tried the Seagate with an XP machine but as with the Mac, it wants to initiate or format the drive.
XP disk utility tells me that the file structure is RAW and Disk Management tool shows 16MB Unallocated and No File Structure whatsoever.
I am sorry I upset the Apple Gods by trying to dig into my Windows past. I beg mercy and forgiveness

Maurizio,
I clicked O.K. and made sure no formatting or erasing happened.
Well, there's the problem. Whether or not you knew it was happening, OS X must first re-format any drive for use with Time Machine, unless it is already formatted as HFS+. In short, the drive has been erased. I feel your pain.
On the bright side, your data will not have been touched; it is still there, just not listed in a directory structure (file system). You will need to look into one of the many file recovery software packages. The drive is not damaged, physically, so a professional service is really not necessary. Just find a suitable software title that can do the job of file recovery for you. These can be had for not too much $$$. Stick with Windows titles, though, since the files were stored as part of a native Windows file system.

  • How to recover lost files on external HDD

Hello all, I gave my external HDD (G Drive, I bought it from the app store), as far as I see the model ist something like - HDST HTS 5410, to a friend and the dumm *** deleted all my old files (movies, fotos) and put new ones. So my question is how to restore/recovery if possible. Thank you and really hope there is a chance.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Your files were most likely overwritten, so don't expect too much success at recovering them.

Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents. If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.

Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?
Any computer is compatible as long as it can read and write Office files. But for perfect (or at least near perfect) compatibility, you would want to purchase Office 2011 for Mac.
How can I transport from Windows to Mac?
You can't directly transport any installation of Windows. All PC's come with a machine specific version of Windows intended for that PC. They don't have all of the hardware drivers the retail disks cover.
If you want Windows on your Mac, you would first purchase a full version copy (NOT an upgrade disk) of Windows 7 or 8. Those are the only supported versions on newer Macs. You install it through the supplied Boot Camp utility that comes with the Mac to create a new partition for Windows, and then install the retail copy of Windows you purchased.
The reason only these versions of Windows are supported is the same basic reason as a machine specific version of Windows for a PC. Apple only includes the necessary Mac hardware drivers for Win 7 or 8 on new Macs.
Once Windows is installed, you could then install the version of Office for Windows you already own. The nuisance of a Boot Camp partition is that you have to physically boot to either Windows or OS X, so you can only use the apps of the OS you're in at the time. To use both at once, you'd have to use virtual machine software (Parallels, VMware, VirtualBox) and then install Windows within that. Then you'd be able to run Windows inside of OS X and have access to both at the same time.

  • New To Mac, How to move/copy files from external drive

Just got my first Mac computer. My music files (about 140 gb) are on an external drive.
When setting up iTunes the process of transfering and organizing the files took over 24 hours--more than twice as long as on my old PC.
I would like to keep the files on the Mac itself. I have plenty of space now, and I think not using an external drive improves performance. Then I could use the hard drive as a back-up, as nature intended.
Problem is, due to my inexperience with Macs I'm stumped as to how to do this.
Any suggestions would be greatly aprecciated!

I believe you would simply copy your iTunes Music folder from your external drive into the main iTunes folder on your Mac, then open Preferences, and in the Advanced section use the 'Change' button next to eh 'iTunes music folder location' window to find your copy of the iTunes Music folder and let your Mac know that's where all your tunes are.
That's pretty much the exact reverse of what I had to do!
Hope that helps (and isn't wrong)!

  • Hi, I'm new to Mac and need my photo file structure to resemble what it was on my PC

I uploaded all my new photos from my PC, which then fed into iphoto.
However when I look into the iphoto library they have automatically created folder and file names, rather than what they were names in my PC. In the iphoto ap they appear fine there.
How do I get the library structure to resemble the folder names given in the iphoto ap or on my old pc?
It is the latest operating structure and iphoto ap running.

Just tp highlight a couple of major issues with a referenced library
Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library
This preference is turned on by default. When you import photos from a hard disk, iPhoto copies(duplicates) the photos to the iPhoto library and uses the copies. The original photos remain untouched in their current locations.
If you have an extensive collection of photos on your computer and you want to keep your current file organization, you can have iPhoto point to your original photo files instead of importing them into your iPhoto library. To have iPhoto access your photos from their current locations on your hard disk (rather than making copies of them), deselect this checkbox. Note that if you edit one of these images in iPhoto, the edited version is saved in the iPhoto library and the original file remains untouched.
If you turn off this preference, be sure not to move the photos from the location from which they were imported. If you move the files, your iPhoto library won’t work correctly.
So you still have not reporduced the PC structure since you only have that structure for the original photos - no edits appear in that structure
    Importing is more compicated
Deleting ai more complicated since you have to delete form iPhoto nand then from yoru own managed file structure
and most critically you can not more the photos - so replacing defective hardware or upgrading to a larger hard drive or to a new computer is not possible
Plus there is no gain from a referenced library - so I suggest you do not recommend it since it does not work for hardly anyone

  • My Macbook Pro can't detect or read my CDFS file system external HDD

My Macbook Pro can't detect or read my CDFS file system external HDD

Open Disk Utility and see if the USB drives show in there. If they don't then it is a USB port or bus problem. If they do show in disk utility are they formatted in either Mac extended or a Windows format?

  • Can't see files on external hdd

Hi all I am a noob to MAC so here goes.
I am running ML OS 10.8.4 Server. I was MOVING music from my internal hdd to my external hdd and the battery died in the middle of the move.  I am able to see the files that were moved on my windows machine but the folder is grayed out on my mac. It can read that data is in the folder but wont allow me to open it.  The good news is even though I did a move the files are stil on my internal hdd. I could easily delete the folder and re do it again but I am talking over 400gig of music so far and it was taking hours to move.
Why can't I access the folder and its there but I can access it via windows,  Any suggestion.
    Thanks
    QS

Oh boy. Excuse me for my mistake. Yes I am in the wrong place. I have my 250Gig Westernal digital hard drive connected to my macbook pro.
Yeah it's weird. But as I said, Fileziller seems to see it and I have a test site running on one host's server that is fine. When I went FTP the files (they are drupal). Everything comes over except my one folder where all my images are.
So do you want me to post this in the leopard forum?

  • Lost pictures from external HDD

    Hello,
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
I tried to use the Disc Utility to repair the disc, it appeared to be OK. I tried to rebuild iPhoto previews (cmd*alt at iPhoto start) and it did not help.
Could you give me any advice, please?
    Regards
    Frank

I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
ExFAT is your problem. iPhoto requires the iPhoto Library to be on a drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).
See these documents:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
and Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture(or iPhoto)

What probably has happened is, that you created the library on that drive, but iPhoto could not write to it and wrote the image files to a temporary storage.   Check, if iPhoto created a new library in your Pictures folder instead. Did you reboot your Mac, since you imported the photos? If not, wait, unti you have checked the Caches and temporary directories, before you restart your mac, because that will erase any temporary files.

  • How to retrieve files on external HDD via Time Capsule?

I have external HDDs connected to Time Capsule but when I access those HDDs, they don't show the files that were stored in them.  However, when I check the "Get Info" on those HDDs, it shows how much capacity is used and how much is available.  How can I retrieve my files on those external HDDs via Time Capsule?  Many thanks for your help!!

    How is the drive formatted?
Does it show up in the airport utility?
TC has very restricted ability to read HFS+ (ie standard Mac format) or Fat32.

  • Mavericks not "seeing" files on external hdd

This has to be the single weirdest thing I've ever experienced on any Mac I've owned.
I have an external hdd that contains all my pictures sorted by year, followed by a folder for the raw images extracted from my iPhone using Image Capture. This is done on my iMac and I've been doing it this way for years.
Today, I freed up some much needed space on my iPhone using the above method. When I deleted the images from my Camera Roll on my iPhone, I went into the external hdd and saw that the files I just literally transfered were gone! I checked the trash, other folders and even the desktop and they were gone...simply disapperared. Clicking into a random year showed no subfolders, consequently: no files.
Frantic, I unplugged the external hdd and plugged it into my Macbook Air (not running Mavericks just yet). The files from the aforementioned random year were actually all there, as well as some root folders containing iPhone pictures I backed up a few weeks ago. It even had the photos i transfered off my wife's phone prior to working on my own. But the folder that shows my photos were still not there.
I am currently running a diagnostic software for data recovery. There is no iCloud backup as of last night (most recent was two days ago). Not a photostream person so that's not turned on. I was able to get many of the photos from the Google Plus iPhone app.
My question is: what gives? How does Mavericks show an empty folder but my Macbook Air shows files? I just used this external hdd on my iMac the other day and those files were there. There is no hidden files option or anything...no preferences have been changed on the computer. Why is this happening and can I get my "deleted" data back? For the life of me I cannot understand some features in Mavericks...but this one erks me.

Interesting that no files show when plugged into the USB port, drive looks empty with the exception of the space remaining. Folder structures show when plugged into firewire 400. The drive has an external power supply.

  • Finder crashes anytime I try to transfer files onto external HDD

I recently had to have the HDD cable inside my MBP replaced because it was not working properly. After it was installed I was able to do a clean install of OS X 10.6 and after fully updating to 10.6.8 I installed ML 10.8.2 everything was working perfectly then all of a sudden I am no longer able to transfer files from my desktop onto any external HDD. I thought there might be something wrong with the external HDD but I can copy items off of it onto the desktop with no problem and was even able to place things on it before finder started randomly freezing. The freeze starts off with the spinning beach ball, and everything else seems to be working until i switch to a different application then they all start freezing.
Is there any way to solve this without having to completley do a clean install all over again?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.

  • X1 Carbon Preload Windows 7-64bit failed to create 1st backup to external HDD

    Hi everyone!
I using X1c with Preload Win7 Pro 64bit from Lenovo. I failed to create backup in "C" drive and also in external HDD. After I run the backup process, data will copy to "Z" drive (about 1.76GB), then its will try to copy to my external HDD,then occur an error. i'll try to post the error msg soon.
    Any users got same error?

    Hi, Anonymous77
How exactly are you trying to create the backup? If you navigate to Control Panel, there should be an option called "Recovery." If you select this, Windows should walk you through the steps and correct procedure to create a backup. Have you tried this route? Also, please post the exact error message you received when you get a chance.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

  • Boot caches, missing file structure, external HDs

I installed Leopard two days ago along with buying a new 320GB external. I backed up 20 gigs of files to give my 160 gig internal HD some breathing room. I was showing my friend how to format an external using disk utility and accidentally started formatting my new external. I realized my error as soon as I hit the format HFS button and stopped it before it started formatting my disc.
When I shut down later Finder told me my boot caches needed to be updated. This took about 10 minutes. When I booted up later that day my external drive had a different icon(one of the orange drives) and a different name. It said it didn't have any data on it, like the directory information was deleted.
I need to be able to access the data that's still on the external. How can I do this?

I've given up trying to recover that data I guess I just fried the file structure information.

  • Windows or Mac-based player for SPX files?

Hi all, we have a QM server, aka Calabrio, recording our agents.  I was curious if anyone has found a player for mac or windows that is able to play the recorded SPX files directly?  I tried VLC with the Speex codec but get nothing; it doesn't show the length of the recording either, which makes me think it's not recognizing the file.  I can download the sample files from the speex.org website so that makes me wonder if the Cisco version of Speex is proprietary in some way.
    Thanks!

I got a hold of the Calabrio folks and it turns out the Speex files created by QM are actually in a 'proprietary encrypted format' and are not just run of the mill Speex codec files, so there's not a way to take the raw files and play them off the QM server.
If you do have a need to get a recording to someone who doesn't have QM supervisor, evaluator or manager access, you need to log in, find the call you want, export it in your choice of either WAV or WMA format, save those files off and then you can move them around as needed.
