Windows Update - Checking forever...
Hi guys,
We have been deploying a few machines using SCCM Task Sequence with an image of windows 8.1 Enterprise. The first load of laptops we deployed worked perfect and no issues.
The last 3 laptops we have deployed are having issues checking for windows updates. We have office and various other programs installed which do require the latest service packs. They normally downloaded during windows updates.
Eventually after it checking for ages, an error code will pop up.
Error Log:
WARNING: Failed to get Wu Exemption info from NLM, assuming not exempt, error = 0x800704C6
WARNING: BeginDetection failed, hr:0x8024a008
Any ideas?
Alec

Windows Update searching forever on Windows Server 2012 R2
Hi,
I upgraded a Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2 a couple of weeks ago. Everthing seems to be ok except the Windows Update Service. Whenever i started the check for Update the check never completes - i have to reboot the Server. It doesn't matter
if i check with WSUS Server (Default) or check online.
Similar when i try to stop the wuauserv - stopping forever - reboot
i checked the windowsupdate.log - i does not show unusual message
When i do a:
c:\Windows\system32> wuauclt.exe /reportnow
or just without any parameter
Nothing happens!
It seems that the program stops imediately and nothing happens.
What i tried so far:
1) net stop wuauserv --> stopping
Rename c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution ; reboot - same problem
2) remove the wsus entries from the registiry --> Reboot -> same problem
3) remove the Wsus entries in the Registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
SUSClientID & SUSClientIDValidation ; removed the Client from the WSUS Console ; reboot --> same Problem
4) i could install the updates with wusa.exe --> no problem
any ideas ?

[SOLVED] Windows Update not working after Cloning Hard Disk!
Lenovo T61p with Intel Turbo Memory - Cloning HDD with Advanced Format (4K Cluster) HDD
I have been beating my head against my desk for the past day trying to figure out the problems I am having.
I have a Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate Installation
I cloned my old 100GB HDD onto a 500GB HDD to increase space however after doing so I am unable to update windows, turn windows defender on, or install any Microsoft Products. I am even unable to install WindowsActivationUpdate or Microsoft Security Essentials.
I have tried many FixIt tools to no avail.
I have run SFC /SCANNOW
I have run CHKDSK
I am stumped.
****RESOLUTION****
After doing some digging I found the solution. Since I had cloned the drive, the old AHCI driver wasn't updating Windows with the correct sector size. Updating the AHCI driver with the latest from Intel solved all the issues I was having.
**Note**
Install the Lenovo Driver First -- Reboot
Lenovo Driver: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001676
Install the AHCI Driver Manually (iaAHCI.inf - Do this in Device Manager) -- Reboot
Intel AHCI RST Driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20110
***DO NOT INSTALL RST GUI IT WILL REMOVE TURBO MEMORY DRIVERS!!!***
Windows Update = Working
Windows Defender = Updating
Windows Installations = Working

But it still says Windows 7 Activation was Successful.I only discovered this problem a month after replacing my system HDD with an ssd Drive for a Vista sp2 Dell studio 1735 . But in my case all drivers were up to date. However this post triggered the right path to a solution. Though it is more
a workaround ... . Perhaps this will help others, an even more perhaps bring a microsoft engineer to make a small adaption to the vista windows update tool ....
So the problem seems that Windows Update checks for its datastore if the file is alined with the HDD underneath. But it seems that this check fails for an ssd with a 4K sector size.
Lucky I had another HDD in my laptop, which is required for this work around to work :-(. So the following shows the problem (and I think Windows Update does an alike test).
cd \windows\SDold\DataStore (so use cd \windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore if you didn't try the "ren" action yet as mentioned in many posts)
esentutl /g DataStore.edb -> (result) Operation terminated with error -583 (JET_errSectorSizeNotSupported, The physical sector size reported by the disk subsystem, is unsupported by ESE for a specific file type.) after 0.15 seconds.
cd D:\ (to a 512 byte sectored HDD )
esentutl /g C:\Windows\SDold\DataStore\DataStore.edb -> (succeeds! normal verification output)
So I tried (the junction tool can be downloaded from sysinternals):
net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
robocopy /mir C:\Windows\SDold\DataStore D:\DataStore
robocopy /mir C:\Windows\system32\catroot2 D:\catroot2 (I now think this is not needed, but I started with an Technet post (and many others ...) that put me on the esentutl track... , which is also why the "net stop cryptsvc" is present.)
C:
cd ..\SoftwareDistribution
rmdir /s /q DataStore
junction DataStore D:\DataStore
cd ..\system32 ( again not sure if needed, also counts for the next 2 commands).
rmdir /s /q catroot2
junction catroot2 D:\catroot2
net start cryptsvc
net start wuauserv
And windows update worked again ! Check the C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log
Of course this is just a workaround, but perhaps this puts another searcher on the right track. And perhaps it makes a Microsoft engineer update the responsible code ... as to be aligned on disk does not seem crucial for the databases used for this "application"
Sorry had to remove links for sysinternals and cc734083(v=ws.10).aspx (esentutl, which is a vista specific command) both Microsoft links, as Microsoft has not yet verified my account ... -
Windows update KB2847077 messes up Media Player settings
Windows update KB2847077
causes Media Player 12.07601.17514 to lose track of all settings and libraries
Double clicking on a video media - opens a first time window that asks to use recommended or custom settings.
(this is catastrophic for me as I use Media Player's DLNA connectivity)
This has happened twice to me - first from a standard Windows Update (yesterday 12/11/2013) - I had to do a system restore to before the update, then figured out that it was KB2847077 - so updated everything else except for KB2847077 - my PC and media player
were just fine after the restart.
Last night for some reason that update was installed again, from one of my vulnerability scans (despite me specifically hiding it in Windows Update) - so this morning my Media Player was messed up again - did another system restore before that module update,
and everything is back to normal again.
Thanks
VincentHi,
Do you have the issue described in the KB?
You install Internet Explorer 10 on a Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer.
You configure the AutoPlay feature so that Windows automatically uses Windows Media Player to play audio CDs.
You insert an audio CD into the CD-ROM device, and then Windows Media Player starts.
If not, we can choose to hide the update.
Control Panel>System and Security>Windows Update>Check for update>right the update and choose Hide Update.
If you want to see the update later, on the main Windows Update page, choose Restore Hidden update.
Otherwise we can refer to the following article to fix the issue caused by windows update.

At some convenient time, can you do a Start, Settings, More, More, Windows Update, Check Now.
Does it work?
Mine is failing with "Connection to update server was not available".
I have dropped the Anyware part of my Broadband and have the phone on a different carrier. Slightly suspicious that the WU path is hard-coded to use a BT address which I am no longer able to access.
Googling the error message suggests I check the Hosts file but there seems to be no such thing on the phone.
But perhaps it never worked in the first place; hence my question.
I also note that after resetting the phone and not adding the BT customisations, I no longer have a virus checker.
TIA

Solved!
Go to Solution.V. useful info - thanks Allan. I was thinking in PC mode, so after an o/s reload, Windows Update was my first port of call.
It is misleadingly named! And will certainly be looking at BT servers, which is why I can't connect. Case closed.
Web browsing is pretty much BBC, TFL and National Rail, so not too worried about losing the security.
The only think I vaguely miss if the BT Home screen, which was pretty well designed. But I'm looking at alternatives (HTC Home etc.). Also have set up WM 6 SDK on my Visual Studio so I can write my own apps for the phone (if I ever get that bored).

Updated URLs for Windows Update?
Greetings,
I'm locking down a thin client that will only have access to a few sites. We would also like to allow access to Windows Update. I've searched through Technet and other sites and they all seem to suggest allowing the following sites; even though some seem
to point to legacy systems. Is it still recommended to allow all of the following URLs? I haven't seen any recent KBs or posts to state otherwise. This is for a Windows 7 Professional solution:
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.update.microsoft.com

ntservicepack.microsoft.comHi,
As far as I know, If you block Windows update web site like Windowsupdate.microsoft.com, update.microsoft.com, Windowsupdate.com. You may encounter windows update check problem. That's to say, system won't find system important updates any more.

I restarted my computer but still have this issue.
I changed the setting from "install updates automatically" to "never check for updates". clicked ok and then changed back to "install updates automatically". Tried to check for updates and still receive the same error.
Windows defender was turned off. I turned it on updated it but still receive the same error message.
The background intelligent transfer service and windows update are set to "automatic delayed start" and the status for both is "started".
I'm running windows 7 home premium 64 bit
I ran the MGADIAG tool and here is the report (windows tab)

Windows 8 has been running very well after installing it with bootcamp and its latest drivers.
I just have never updated Windows 8 itself, (windows has never checked for updates), and just has been
using it bare. Do you update windows 8 to the latest updates with windows 8, and have any problems
with the updates? Just curious before I start updating it for once. You have to update Windows to the latest version with Windows Update and keep it updated, because this is a matter of security. Microsoft provides a lot of security updates and you have to install them even if you have got an antivirus. Then you can find other updates, and if you want to install Windows 8.1, just install all updates with Windows Update, and then go to the Windows Store and download Windows 8.1.
Apple says that Windows 8.1 is not supported by Boot Camp, but people say it works without any problem with the most recent drivers, so I do not find any risk after upgrading to Windows 8.1. -
After the next updating of the browser to 13th version such problems have occured :
1. At each start of Firefox constantly there comes a window of check of additions on compatibility, that on the previous versions was not observed.
2. To the homepage at start the page has added (http://www.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/13.0/whatsnew/?oldversion=rv:12.0) or "Ура! У вас стоит последняя версия Firefox."Besides in options the page is not changed.
I.e. all the things happen after Firefox is updated, but only now it is constant.
WinXP SP3See these articles for some suggestions:
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page - Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' symbols
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved
It is also possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files":
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available. -

Ali HadaweHi ,
First of all ,I would you suggest to check the status of the "Windows update "services " and "Background Intelligent Transfer service".Run "Services.msc" to open the services manager.
Someone has tried the following methods to resolve the similar issue, please have a try :
1.go into Windows Update and change the settings to "Never check for updates (not recommended)", click OK, and then change it back to "Install updates automatically".
2.Turn on the Windows Defender and update it .

Server 2012 Windows Update problems: There was a problem checking for updates Code 80240437
I get this problem when attempting to update Windows Server 2012.
Only thing that has changed since i last did the update to the problem is installing Lync Server 2013.
I have tried the solutions advised here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/e7ba0364-154e-404c-a7e5-7cfe4fa3b5c4/windows-update-error-0x80240437-after-installing-lync-2013
But still no luck.
Any ideas?Hi,
In the link you posted above, I provided six suggestions. I would like to confirm that did you tried all of these suggestions?
If not, please try them and let us know the result.
================================
Suggestion 1: Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue.
Suggestion 2: Disable Windows Update service, rename the folder %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and restart the Windows Update service.

Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running
Running Windows 7 on a Dell N5110.
I get the above message for Windows Updates. Below that it states: Find out more about free software from (null).
I have restarted the computer.
I have run McAffe and MalwareBytes Pro- nothing wrong.
This answer didn't work because the Software Distribution folder was
already empty:
go to services and stop Windows update service
locate C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ folder and delete all its content
start Windows update service
check for update
Under Services:
BITS is set at Automatic(Delayed Start)
Windows Update is also set at Automatic (Delayed Start). It is stopped. If I try to start it, I get the following message: Windows could not start the Windows Update service on local computer. Error 1079: The account specified is different from the account
specified for other services running in the same processes.
In addition, the Windows Update shows nothing under view update history and nothing under hidden updates. Change settings allows me to do absolutely nothing. Red Shield with an x and the options are shaded.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Hi,
How's everything now?

Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001
Hi all,
I have a WSUS installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box, I have a new Windows Server 2012 box (joined to domain) that cannot get updates from the WSUS, whenever I try to search for new updates I receive the following error in event viewer:
Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001
Note: I cannot see the Win2K12 server in the WSUS console under computers node.I couldn't get it to run even after installing the mentioned KB fixes. So I investigated the error myself, and found a "hack" that seems to fix the issue. Wrote up a small piece on it here:
http://tplive.azurewebsites.net/2013/12/windows-update-error/
You and about a thousand other people have reported "I had already installed [the update], but installing it AGAIN fixed the problem.", which is almost assuredly a simple indication that the original installation of the update failed, and you simply did
not recognize that the installation of the update was not successful.
The fact that the /selfupdate folder was corrupted (read: missing files) pretty much says it all. There's no bug. Your installation of the update simply failed. (Or, the server wasn't healthy to begin with and you got what you got.)
Bottom line: The only known cause for a client-side 0x800B0001 error code is that the WSUS server has not been
properly and completely patched.
