Windows Automatic Updates started since the first Win 10 TP version, 9841.
It is by design. MS wants it that way.

  • Error when using windows update to upgrade to build 10061

When I use windows update to upgrade to Build 10061 it goes all the way through downloading but as soon as it gets to the installation it errors out.  The error code given is 8024201C.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Wishing,
    What is your current situation?
This issue might be caused by 3rd-party software handles, you may take a try to run Windows 8.1 update assistant and see what it says:

  • Windows Update disabled on Terminal Services Server

No matter which administrative account I use, local or domain, Windows Update displays a "Windows Update is managed by your system administrator" message.
I have attempted to use the /admin switch when connecting to the server.
I have executed change user /install at the command prompt.
I have attempted to run from a console directly attached to the server.
I still cannot apply the updates.  The last update was in July 2014 and I need Windows Server 2008 SP2 installed for an application upgrade.  I did not install or configure this server.  The admin that did is no longer with the company and
    is not available for support.
    Any advice is appreciated.

I found the solution. There was a local Group Policy setting that had disabled Windows Update.  The steps to correct are below.
    Local Group Policy (gpedit.msc)
    -        User Configuration
    -        Administrative Templates
    -        Windows Components
    -        Windows Update
    -        Remove access to use all Windows Update features.
It had been set to enabled.  Changed to disabled and can now get and install updates.

  • Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise Build 9879 Product Key

    Hi
Does the Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise 9879 uses the same product key as build 9841???

I would have been totally satisfied if the final release was B9860.
I have installed the TP on all my pc's. I have 3 desktops and a laptop that I did clean installs for on spare hard drives.
I also cloned the Windows 8.1 systems from each of them - and upgraded to Win 10 TP to see how it would handle the variety of applications I have on each.
One minor issue was that a diagnostic application I prefer to use - lost some of it's capability to display certain components like CPU specs.
The audio had been working exceptionally well up to B9860. Then I had one major issue on one of the desktops - when the audio stopped working right. Microphone audio was passed to the speaker output correctly - but NO audio
was passed from Windows Media Player or Winamp. But it did pass audio thru to the speakers from a music editing application which I use.
Even more strange was that when I moved that hard drive to another desktop which has similar motherboard - the audio works perfectly. Both have VIA audio devices.
I also installed Win10 TP Enterprise on a hard drive and had the same results as above when booted up on those two desktop pc's. Whatever evidence I could extract has been passed back to Microsoft.
On checking I find the Win10 TP and Enterprise use the same key.
Otherwise - as you say - Windows 10 is GREAT. So I can't wait for the final release.
btw: I have done about a dozen different installs and never had to enter the install key when installing any of the Win10 systems. I have the general Win10 TP B9841 ISO burned to a DVD and each install had to be upgraded to the next build available.
The Enterprise comes as B9879 and I burned that ISO to a USB3 Flash Drive. Much better performance - and re-usable. So I will not be using DVD's in future.

  • How to disable the windows update message "Windows update hasn't been able to check for updates for the last 30 days"

    Hi,
We work on a domain that uses Symantec Management console to administrate our patch enviroment. We have windows updates disabled. But our Windows 8 machines get this message once a month
"Windows update hasn't been able to check for updates for the last 30 days"
Just wondering if anyone knows which GPO to use to disable this setting as I have been unable to find it.
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can turn off the message by GUI in Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center, in the right pane, click "Change Action Center settings", then untick the "Windows Update" option.
For GPO, you can disable all balloon notifications:
User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar\Turn off all balloon notifications
Or remove Action Center icon itself
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove the Action Center icon
And I haven't found a GPO to turn on\off a specific message mentioned in the action center, but the setting for the message is related with registry key under
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Action Center\Checks
but the value under the key is binary, hard to control, if you have interest, you can export the key from a preference pc, then deploy the GPO via
User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry

  • Feb 2015 CU - Windows Update - feedback

Not really a question/problem - more a feedback/sharing on the experience with FEB 2015 CU that comes with Windows updates (WUS)
I'm Building a new farm that consist of 2 servers Windows 2012 R2 (a WFE and APP) - so after installing the OS (WUS updating)
I then installed SharePoint - and it's up and running - both servers in the Farm..
So getting ready for the WUS again - and besides some more updates for the OS the FEB 2015 CU was marked to be downloaded and get installed on both servers - then the WUS tells a restart is needed - so it's all good.. restarting both servers and they where
    back online.
I then - as stated from MS - ran the PSconfig (UI) on the APP server (as an Administrator) and it first tells me that this wizard will upgrade SP...(well that's is what I'm aiming for so go ahead!)
I click on the 'Next' button - and BOOM !!!! The PSconfig on the APP server stops and telling, that there's a lot of missing files on the WFE server! (not on the APP) - so can't continue the wizard!!
I then tried to run the PSconfig (UI) on the WFE and BOOM !! same thing - a lot of files was reporting missing on the APP server!!! (not itself) - so couldn't continue on that server as well!!
So Microsoft - Dead end ... what do one do in a situation like that??!? - where's the info?.
I got it solved by running the powershell "Get-SPProcduct -Local" on each server - but MS needs to make the PSConfig multiple server aware, so this Get-SPProcduct -Local" becomes unnecessary, when the updates is applied from the WUS.
    Just my 2 cents.. !

    Product Support Services
Technically, snapshots aren't supported due to performance reasons as you're running on a differencing disk after the snapshot. The only "supported" way to rollback a farm is:
    1) Have a valid full farm backup (or SQL db backup) pre-patch
    2) Create a new farm, from scratch (this is why scripting your build is essential!), using newly built servers
    3) Reconfigure farm-wide settings (e.g. Web Applications, Outgoing email, and so on).
    4) Restore Content and Service Application databases
Full farm backup is via Backup-SPFarm or Central Admin. SQL backup is via T-SQL/SQL Server Management Studio (a full farm backup also performs a T-SQL backup). 3rd party backup solutions may also work.

  • Windows update during TS

I have a basic TS defined to deploy Windows 7 client. I have the pre-application and post-application Windows update disabled (default setting anyway). However, Windows was still installing updating during the Windows application installation phase and it
restarted the server (due to Windows update completion) Windows waiting the application to complete. I have a similar TS for Windows 8 client and it didn't have that problem. Anyone has an idea of what is happening?
    Thanks

    Hi Erez,
Could you please share us the WindowsUpdate.log file here?
From the information youposted, it seems to be Windows Update can't check for the updates, you may try to run Windows Update Troubleshooter first, it that didn't help, run the following command using the Windows 10 9926 ISO to repair:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image
    /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:F:\sources\install.wim:1
    /LimitAccess
F: Drive stands for the mounted Windows 10 build 9926 ISO.
    Best regards

  • Windows Update Service Disabled - Error 80070422

    Hi,
On Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, when I go to Windows Update I see a "Check For Updates" button. When I click it I get an 80070422 error and "Try Again" button which does not work.
I have tried all that is explained in Help on this error, but it's still not working. Let me write in more detail: I opened "Administrative Tools", went to "Services", "Windows Update" service is disabled. I set the "Startup Type" to "Automatic", click on Apply and then I click the "Start" button to start the service. I get an error: 1058: "Windows could not start the Windows Update service on Local Computer", "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it".
I downloaded "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and installed it, hoping that the problem will be fixed, but no luck.
I read somewhere on this forum that a user faced a similar problem and searched in "Windows\System32" for "wu*.*" files and changed the security settings for all of them to allow SYSTEM and Administrators full control and re-registered through "regsvr32" all of the .dll files, but, after doing all of these I still had no luck.
My Windows Update still displays the error 80070422 and when I try to start the Windows Update service I get the error that the service cannot be started and it always sets itself on "Disabled", no matter what I do.
Could someone please help me with this problem? I really don't know what else to do.

    Wow, great!

On the third scan, no other infections were found. The files and locations and one or two registry entries are similar to what I suspected was not allright, so I guess the (right) virus has been found and eliminated. Have enabled Java in FireFox and everything seems fine, haven't touched Internet Explorer just to be on the safe side so I can't say anything about that, but everything looks allright. Seems this was the problem. Thanks again, mate, your post was a life saver.

I cannot seems to get any software updates at my end. Windows update cannot find any updates for Windows Defender.
My latest Windows 10 Technical Preview version 9926 cannot seems to find any software updates.
    I keep getting this error.0x80248014!
I keep getting this error since I have the first Beta Build 9841 and 9879. I did not have the download of 9860.
I wonder there is a missing Windows Update at the Control Panel.
I have to search all over the place where is the Windows Update??? The GUI is very confusing for a First Timer like me!
    See my screen capture.

    mrdbeta,
Click the Retry button > if you have a Windows defender Update available, it will show up on the list together with a new build such as 9935 Professional. (See my screenshot at the end of the post.)
The system will start installing and when it finishes, it will give you the same error message. That's OK. It shows the error message because it is unable to install the new build which is NOT applicable to
us, the general users. Those new builds, 9931, 9932, 9934, and lately 9935 are meant for MSFT only.
Click Advanced options > click View your updates history. Your most recent Windows Defender update should be listed. If yes, you are OK. Nothing to worry about.
MS is well aware of the mistake. They will get it fixed soon. Please read the excerpt below from Inside Hub......
Windows Insiders who have installed KB3035129 may see reports in the Settings app under Update & recovery that a new preview build is available. Attempts to download the new build result in Error 0x80246017.
KB3035129 included a code change which unintentionally had the side effect of changing targeting for builds, allowing builds that are exclusive to Microsoft employees to appear available. No new builds are available which are newer than 9926 at this point.
We will issue another update shortly to correct the issue and ensure that Windows Insiders are able to successfully get the next build which is made available to you. We apologize for the confusion and thank you for your continued participation
    and feedback.
***** In the web, there is a registry modification dealing with this issue. I would suggest that you just wait for MS to sort it out. If you want to try the registry hack, google for it. Use it at your own risk

  • [Forum FAQ] How to show Windows Update in Control Panel in Clean Installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926

    Scenario
If you performed a clean installation of the new Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926, you would find Windows Update is only available in
Settings and is hidden in Control Panel by default. However, Windows Update is still available in Control Panel if it is an upgrade version of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926.
    Solution
After the comparison of the two different version, the differences is the following registry:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled
    In clean installation version:
    In upgrade version:
The method to make Windows Update show in Control Panel in the clean installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926:
Edit the REG_DWORD value of IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled from 1 to 0.
    Applies to
Clean installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926

We’ve seen a few forum posts talking about changing registry keys to alter the update experience we shipped in Technical Preview build 9926. There are a couple of reasons that we don’t recommend doing things like that.
First, the default experience is what we’ve tested across not just the Windows 10 team, but across all of Microsoft before we released it to you. That doesn’t mean that you won’t still find bugs, but it’s definitely the code that’s been most thoroughly
tested. Changing things back to older versions is risky because the combination of those old settings with the rest of Windows 10 is not something that’s been validated or supported, so we can’t predict the side effects. It’s possible that changing registry
settings related to update could cause a machine to no longer be able to get new updates or Technical Preview builds.
The other reason to avoid changing the default update experience is that a lot of update-related code is actually being re-written in order to scale across the variety of different device types Windows 10 will support. Since Technical Previews are
a work-in-progress, some code that may still be in build 9926 won’t actually ship in the final version of Windows 10 that we provide to all our customers, so trying to re-enable that code temporarily won’t provide a way to accurately assess Windows 10’s update
    capabilities.
We want to hear your feedback! We’re sharing Technical Preview releases early so we can understand exactly how customers are using our software and make sure we are designing our experiences to address those scenarios. The more
specific the feedback, the more helpful it is for us – saying “I hate the new Windows Update UI” isn’t very useful, but when we see “I need to be able to tell Windows Update to grab updates from WU itself and not from my internal corporate server, so the new
Windows Update UI is painful for me”, we can actually understand what changes we could make to solve those specific problems. We can’t promise to fix everything that everyone asks for – and sometimes what one customer wants is exactly what another customer
doesn’t want – but the more you can help us understand why you want something changed, the better we can try to meet those needs.
Thanks for listening, and we look forward to hearing your responses.

  • Unable to update to Build 9879

    Hi,
Can someone please assist.  When I go to PC Settings, Update and Recovery and click on Preview builds and Check Now, I get the message that there are no new preview builds available.  I am running the Enterprise build of Windows 10 Technical Preview.
    Regards,
    Riaan

    Hi David,
Thanks for the proposal.  By default the setting is set to Fast.  I have tried both settings and still receive the same message.  Could it be something on my work proxy server?
EDIT:  Seems that the update to build 9879 for Windows Technical Preview for Enterprise was not released.  I change some registry settings to test this theory and I immediately got the New Preview build available message.
EDIT: Switched back the registry entries and now it's downloading the latest preview.
    Thank for the assistance.
    Regards,
    Riaan

  • Disabling windows update via group policy

    hi,
i would like to disable automatic windows upate via group policy on windows server 2008. is it possible?
    thanks.
    sundeep

    hi,
disabling the automatic update is not a recommended practice, but here are the steps,
    Click Start, and then click
    Run.
    Type gpedit.msc, and then click
    OK.
    Expand Computer Configuration.
Right-click Administrative Templates, and then click
    Add/Remove Templates.
    Click Add, click
Wuau.admin the Windows\Inf folder, and then click Open.
    Click Close.
    Under Computer Configuration, expand
Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Windows Update.
The Configure Automatic Updatespolicy appears. This policy specifies whether the computer receives security updates and other important downloads through the Windows Automatic Updates feature. The settings for this policy let you specify if
automatic updates are enabled on the computer. If the service is enabled, you must select one of the three configuration options.
To view the policy settings, double-click the
    Configure Automatic Updatespolicy.
To turn on Automatic Updates, click
Enabled or to turn off select
    Disabled
    hope this helps
    thanks

  • Disable USB driver installation from searching Windows Updates for software

    Hello,
When a plug-n-play device is connected to a Windows 7 system, the system by default tries to search Windows update for compatible drivers.  I have a preconfigured driver store on each system that will have the drivers for all of the USB devices we care
about so I'd like to search the local driver store first before searching for Windows updates.
I found the option that controls this under System Properties > Advanced system settings > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings.  I have set this option before my machines run through sysprep, however, sysprep appears to be resetting
the option back to the Windows default (Yes, do this automatically) and ignores what I set it to.
I have a reg key that I'm running post-sysprep, but I'd like to avoid this as it's an extra step and I don't want to have to account for it long-term.  My question is, is there a way to set this option in my sysprep unattend file?

    If this is a domain joined machine, this can be set by a Group Policy Object;
    Open Group Policy Management Editor.
In the navigation pane, open Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management\Internet
    Communication settings.
In the details pane, double-click Turn off Windows Update device driver searching.
    Do one of the following:
To turn off searching Windows Update, click Enabled.
To allow searching Windows Update, click Disabled.
Click OK to save your settings.
    Instructions taken from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730606(v=ws.10).aspx
If this PC is not on the domain (but is Pro) you may be able to set the same option on the Local Group Policy (GPEDIT.MSC).
    Kind Regards
    Barry
