Windows Update files: Security permissions has "unknown user"

Ok, this is weird. I have 30 files added in a November Windows update with a compile date or add-to date of 11/21/14. If I look at one of the files. MsSpellCheckingFacility.exe.  I can see it is a legit file.
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/e9dcf987838e9a70fca4e1b1dda217bd1e309cd4f6bac47402120f76aac6edc7/analysis/
However, the security permissions on the file are strange.  The user TrustedInstaller is the owner.  Now that seems to be typical when the file is a Microsoft updated file.  However, the file also has a user added that is unknown.
user ? S-1-14-21
Umm, why is this?  Its 30 files like this all REAL Microsoft files....all apparently part of the update.  All scanned against virustotal as being revised about that date/time.  Did Microsoft release an Update Build with files as a part
of that build that had Microsoft users still attached to them?

Hi!
This machine is joined to a domain? This SID with parameter "-21-" indicates a domain. If so, it is needed to verify on local polices if any user had permission on domain workstations enforced by network Administration.
But when researching by SID "S-1-14-21" we have no
reference, as parameter "-14-" is not commonly used.
From articles bellow, we can find how SID works and the well known SIDs:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd302645.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn743661.aspx
As this is not a known SID, I suggest you to try to use the script on link bellow to determine who is the user account:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2004/12/03/how-can-i-determine-the-sid-for-a-user-account.aspx
The problem can be a user account that had already deleted (this is why SID is not resolved to a name) or a problem on WMI component that is not able to resolve SID.
If not successfull with article above, please post a screenshot on file permission in order to help you further.
Cheers!

  • Windows Update for Security Essentials causes FDF-PDF network opening a file error:Access Denied

    We open PDF files on mapped network drives, using FDF forms with fields.  The latest Windows Update (12/15/14) KB2310138 is now causing the Adobe Reader application to say "Access Denied".  I know it is the update for sure.  I have one computer WITH the update that gets the error, another without that doesn't.  If I change the "/F" reference in the FDF to use a local "C:" copy of the PDF, there is no error message.
    Cannot undo the Windows Update.  Although it shows on the history list, when I go into "Installed Updates" to undo it, it is not listed there.

  • Satellite L850-1HP unable to configure downloaded Windows Update files

    My laptop had issues from day one which were first the CD-ROM not opening, then the webcam and microphone turning off forever and not being able to be turned on again ever, and last but not least, this summer, my laptop would not connect to any WIFI network at all, it wouldn't even find one.
    I went to the place where I bought it for support, they sent it for repairs, a week later, I get it back, it's been restored back to factory settings, everything seemed fine, CD ROM functional.. webcam and microphone too.
    So I thought I'd check around and start tyding things up to my liking, then I realise that I need to download some updates from Windows Update, so I do, about 100+ updates needed, I start downloading them, but they don't download up until the 20th minute that it's stuck at 0%, which seemed shifty to me, because then it just jumped up to like 10% and progressed forward.
    After downloading the updates, or so it said that it had, I restart the laptop in order to get them working and configured properly.
    It didn't. After I clicked restart, it started shutting down, saying that it's configuring and at about 20-30% it rebooted, then it loaded up the same screen saying that it's configuring updates, then it says it failed and says that it's restoring data back to normal, which it never freaking does.
    After about two hours of waiting for it to do anything at all, I reboot the PC, same stuff.
    Reboot again but this time I restore things to factory settings once more, takes me about 1hr again with a complete wipe of data (of course the OS stays and toshiba apps too), set everything up, name and stuff, accept terms and conditions, blah blah, OS starts up, I check everything and restart.
    After the restart, I decide to not configure anything until I've downloaded all the windows updates, so I do just that, BUT, I get the same error again, shifty-slow download of updates, restart and get the same message that it cannot configure updates, and the forever-long wait for the laptop to "restore" data back to normal, which it hasn't done, again.
    I'm completely clueless as to what I should do, I've restored factory settings once more but this time I'll just wait for some feedback or try to do whatever I find on these forums that is useful.
    Please help.

    Hi
    The Satellite L850-1HP was preinstalled with Win 8 64bit.
    Do you have problems installing the Win 8 updates?
    Usually you will get an error message if an update has failed.
    Could you post this error message?

  • Cannot access backup files external drive - only unknown user can

    I've been in problems since a while with the _unknown user issue. I've read several discussions like the following:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2290911?threadID=2290911
    My problem is the following. I upgraded to snow leopard 10.6.7 and I did a clean install so I wiped out my internal harddrive, I wanted to start from scratch again. I figured that I would be able to access all the files on my external harddrive in my Timemachine backup. Everything works fine, except that I can't access the time machine backup. It says 'you have no access' under Info of these maps and only user _unknown can read and write.
    I guess the solution must be that I create a new user account which corresponds with UID of the _unknown user account and that should replace it and should restore access to the files? The only thing is that it is a timemachine backup so I don't know if that poses some additional problems. It would be helpful if someone could explain me what the real problem is, I've been trying lots of thing, but I'm afraid that I would make things worse. So your help we be greatly appreciated!

    You will have great difficulty defeating the ACLs and permissions on your backups.
    Your best bet is to start over; erase your disk, install OSX, and use Setup Assistant to transfer all your stuff.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?, and note especially the green box there.

    To be added, if it is part of domain, is this computer had local account? If so, try to logon local account for test, If sucessfully, follow Cyber's suggestion remove PC from domain and rejoin it for test.
    If not, you can try to boot system into recovery mode and choose recovery computer for test.

  • Deploying a Windows update MSU-file in SCCM 2007

    Hi all,
    we have SCCM 2007. I have a Windows Update file that i need to deploy via SCCM. Its a file with the extension msu. Do i need to convert it to an exe file? If so, how would i be able to do it?
    Please advice. Thank you.
    Tram

    Hi,
    You don't need to convert the update, you use WUSA.exe with the MSU file eg. wusa.exe Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu /quiet
    Take a look at these two articles they explain how to distribute the file:

    Hi Deguich,
    Generally, the Windows Update issue can be caused by one of the following factors:
    1. The Windows Update service has been stopped.
    2. Corrupted Windows Update Temporary folder.
    In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, I suggest you refer to the following steps. After finishing each step, you can check the result again.
    NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please understand that we are disabling these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting.
    Step 1: Verify the relevant Windows Update services
    ================================
    1. Click the "Start" Button, in “Search" bar, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. Double click the service "Windows Update".
    3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.
    4. Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service.
    You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted, please let me know.
    Step 2: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
    ================================
    This problem may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.
    1. Close all the open windows.
    2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
    3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".
    4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
    Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.
    5. Click the Start Button, in the “Search" bar, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
    6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
    7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
    8. While still in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.
    Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.
    If the issue persists, would you please upload the following information to SkyDrive and provide us the link for analyzing?

    Hi,
    I have only one Windows 7 machine which has started to show 80070BC9 in Windowsupdate.log file when trying to install Windows updates KB2478662. I believe this refers to a "pending update" which needs to be completed before other updates can follow (normally
    after a reboot).
    I restarted the computer many times, tried to install this update manually, tried .Net cleanup tool, strated the computer in selective startup mode (without load startup items) and reset Windows update components. unfortunately I still
    have the same problem.

    Hi,
    I understand that the issue persists after registering the Windows Update files and removing incorrect Registry values that may exist. And before that
    you have tried manually installation, disable antivirus, checksur but the update still cannot be installed.
    Based on my experience, the update fail issue may occur when there are problems with winsxs folder, disk or Software Distribution folder. Please try the steps below and check the
    result.
    ===========================================
    1.
     Rename Pending.xml
    1). Open an elevated command prompt
    2). At the command prompt type the following command:
    takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
    3). Rename c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml using the following command:
    Ren c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml pending.old
    2. Run Check disk (chkdsk) on the OS partition
    1). Open an elevated command prompt
    2). At the command prompt type the following command:
    Chkdsk volume: /f /r
    3. Rename the Software Distribution folder
    To rename the Windows Update temporary SoftwareDistribution directory follow these steps:
    1). Start an administrative command prompt.
    2). Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:
    Net stop wuauserv
    cd %systemroot%
    Ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    Net start wuauserv
    3). Try to install updates again
    Important The following issues occur when you do this:
    • Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
    • When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed.
    • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and from Windows Update, you will have to re-select this option from the Windows Update Web site.
    Note: If the issue is resolved and you can successfully download and install updates, you can safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

  • Windows Update Error (code: 80070490)

    Dear Moderator,
    I have a problem, i could not use windows update from 3 days ago. I've tried to fix it by system restore, but it didn't work.
    I read the information at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044, the problem may occur if there is corruption in the Component Based Servicing (CBS) manifest. But the only way to fix it.....I have to repair the instalation of my windows vista by the instalation dvd. Unfortunately, i didn't receive windows vista dvd when i bought my X61 (7676A14).
    Dear Moderator, do you have any idea to fix it, please? Coz i already disapointed with this situation.
    I hope that Lenovo could consider it and put the instalation file into "Support & Downloads".
    Regards,
    beJoe

    I had a similar problem (with a different error code) and below is how I repaired it. In my case, the error turned out to be a mismatch among the windows update files (EXE and DLL) in the c:\windows\system32 folder.
    From a Vista computer that WILL do windows updates, copy c:\windows\system32\wu*.* to a flash drive.
    Insert the flash drive into the computer with the Windows update problem. On my TP, the flash drive was assigned drive letter F: so I'll use that drive letter in this message. If your system assigns a different drive letter, use that.
    At this stage, you won't be able to copy the "good" files to the %windir%\system32 folder and will get "access denied" messages if you try. You probably will, however, see that some of the windows update files in the current %windir%\system32 folder are of different sizes or are older than the "good" files on the flash drive
    For security reasons, MS is really serious about stopping anyone at all from writing to the System32 folder. You cannot take ownership of files in the directory through the GUI, but you can do so in a command window. You solve this problem as follows:
    Open an elevated command prompt and run the following commands:
     FIRST, TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE WU*.* files in the system 32 directory using this command.
    takeown /f c:\windows\system32\wu*.*
     NEXT, GIVE OWNERSHIP PRIVILEGES TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE ADMINISTRATOR GROUP using this command:
    icacls c:\windows\system32\wu*.* /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
    Then, having vanquished the troublesome "access denied" message, run this command:
    copy f:\wu*.* c:\windows\system32\*.*
    When prompted, allow each current WU*.* file in the system32 to be overwritten.
    On my ThinkPad, Windows Update worked after I performed the above steps.
    If this makes you nervous, it should as you are messing with (and may mess up) the folder with some of the most important operating system files. If you're not experienced, get someone who is experienced to try this.
    Oh, and by the way, run a rescue and recovery or other program to image your disk before you do any of these things.
    Good luck.

  • Windows update error code 80072ee6

    I'm getting error code 80072ee6 when I'm checking for updates. Has anybody seen this error code before?

    Even though this thread is old, I give a possible solution to the 80072EE6 error code for Windows Update (WSUS) because it is my hope that someone will see this and my "fix" will work for them.
    Step: 1 (Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7)  create a registry update file using the following settings (remove comments and other instructional typing):
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "WUServer"="http://Your WSUS Server" (Example:
    http://192.168.150.5
    Be sure to include the "HTTP://)
    "WUStatusServer"="http://Your WSUS Server"  (This should be a duplicate of the one above)
    "AcceptTrustedPublisherCerts"=dword:00000001
    "ElevateNonAdmins"=dword:00000001
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
    Unless you KNOW what you are doing, leave this section as-is:
    "AUOptions"=dword:00000004
    "AUPowerManagement"=dword:00000001
    "AutoInstallMinorUpdates"=dword:00000001
    "DetectionFrequencyEnabled"=dword:00000000
    "EnableFeaturedSoftware"=dword:00000000
    "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000000
    "NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
    "RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled"=dword:00000000
    "RebootWarningTimeoutEnabled"=dword:00000000
    "RebootRelaunchTimeout"=dword:000000f0
    "RescheduleWaitTimeEnabled"=dword:00000000
    "RescheduleWaitTime"=dword:0000001e
    "ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000
    "ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:00000023
    "UseWUServer"=dword:00000001
    "IncludeRecommendedUpdates"=dword:00000001
    "NoAUShutdownOption"=dword:00000001
    "NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption"=dword:00000001
    Merge the file into the rgistry
    Step 2: Create a batch file and copy and paste the following:
    ECHO OFF
    CLS
    REM This prorgam will clear the Windows Update files and folders from the %windrive%\SoftwareDistribution
    REM directory.  Then it will clean the registry of the Windows Update settings and re-apply them.
    REM Once this is done, it will call for the WSUS server to rebuild the Windows Update folder structure.
    ECHO This program will clear the Windows Update Files and Folders.
    ECHO It will reset the Registry entries and re-start the Windows
    ECHO Update by calling the WSUS server for Updates. Once started,
    ECHO DO NOT cancel the program or damage to the Windows OS
    ECHO installation may occur.
    ECHO If you do not want this program to run, press Ctrl-C NOW.
    ECHO Otherwise,
    Pause
    REM This part checks to make sure the SoftwareDistribution folder exists
    REM if it does not exist, the program exits
    IF EXIST %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log GOTO Continue
    Echo The Folder SoftwareDistribution does not exist or is empty. Exiting...
    ping -n 11 127.0.0.1 >NUL
    exit
    REM This part deletes the contents of the "%windrive%\SoftwareDistribution" folder and removes it
    :continue
    c:
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    ping -n 5 127.0.0.1 >NUL
    rd %systemroot%\softwaredistribution /S /Q
    REM This part removes Registry keys associated with Windows Update
    cd c:\
    if exist %systemdrive%\SUSClientReset.log del SUSClientReset.log
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v PingID /f  > %systemdrive%\SUSClientReset.log 2>&1
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v AccountDomainSid /f  >> %systemdrive%\SUSClientReset.log 2>&1
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f  >> %systemdrive%\SUSClientReset.log 2>&1
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientIDValidation /f  >> %systemdrive%\SUSClientReset.log 2>&1
    REM Windows 7 key
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v LastRestorePointSetTime /f  >> %systemdrive%\SUSClientReset.log 2>&1
    REM This part renames the Windows Update log file
    C:
    cd %systemroot%
    IF EXIST windowsupdate_log.old del windowsupdate_log.old
    ren WindowsUpdate.log WindowsUpdate_log.old
    REM This part restarts windows update services
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
    goto comp
    :comp
    REM this part runs the Windows Update and rebuilds all folders
    wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow
    wuauclt.exe /reportnow /detectnow
    REM this part says GOODBYE
    Exit
    If you use any of the above, you do so at your own risk.  I have successfully run this batch file over 100 times and it works for me.  I suggest that you try this on ONE CLIENT before using it on the rest.  This has completely resolved our
    problems with clients that shows the dreaded 80072EE6 error code.

  • Start up slow after a windows update

    I feel a little slow in windows start up in my notebook after a windows update, I have downloaded an install an update about 800mb but all components have not been installed successfully, again after one day back there was another update and it has installed successfully in complete.
    Is updating windows affect to slow down the PC performance?
    Seek your expert advices?
    Tnx.

    You have probably installed too many updates. Windows Update puts many files on the computer to update files. Follow these steps to remove some leftover files.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Search for "Disk Cleanup".
    3. Open Disk Cleanup
    4. Let it search for Windows Update Files. (I don't remember what the actual name is)
    5. Have it clean those files.
    You're done!

  • [Help] Windows 8.1 - Windows Update Cleanup not clearing

    Hi guys,
    I've been troubleshooting my MSI Laptop GE40 for quite awhile now, but I am just unable to find a solution online.
    My laptop is running Windows 8.1, I was doing some cleaning up for my laptop using Disk Cleanup.
    After running Disk Cleanup (With System Files), Windows Update files were showing 425mb. However, after checking it and it completed, it will still show 425mb if I run it again.
    I've tried the following solutions from online, but it didn't work:
    1. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    2. SFC /Scannow
    3. ChkDisk
    4. Microsoft FixIt (Windows update)
    5. Disk Cleanup (Safe Mode / Administrator account)
    It is quite annoying to have this issue surfacing, and the last thing I would do, is to reformat my laptop.
    I've seen the post from one of your post:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/d486c5ef-02bb-42a8-8769-feb53af76ca7/disk-cleanup-windows-update-cleanup?forum=w8itprogeneral",
    but it doesn't make sense that if the update is permanent, and not able to be removed, why is it appearing on the "Windows Update Cleanup"
    I would appreciate if someone can assist me on this issue. Thanks.

    Hi Orrpeesai,
    We could use the TrustedInstaller.exe to clean up the update
    To remove those update files, we need to start the TrustedInstaller by enabling something small, that isn't installed by default (like telnet):
    dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:TelnetClient
    After the installation, TrustedInstaller will continue running waiting for 5-10 minutes to pass and for the machine to be "idle" and then start the scavenge routine. If "TrustedInstaller.exe" isn't running, it can be started with:
    net start TrustedInstaller.
    After scavenge, the entries under PendingRenames and PendingDeletes should be cleared.
