Windows Update of Office 2010 SP2 fails with message Code B56

I have been trying to update a Windows 7 Ultimate + Office 2010 professional with SP2 as supplied both by Windows Update and dowanloaded SP2 from KB2687455.
All attempts fail with a Windows Update error code B56.
I have tried the 'get help with this error' but there is no entry that matches the problem.
I have tracked the event viewer error which is 0x80070643 - this appears to relate to error occurring with .NET, so I am no furrther on.
Help Please from anyone.
Alan Cameron

Thank you for your input. The email prompted me to come back and share what I have been able to do to solve the problem. No answers as to why it worked but what I did was using a dvd with a copy of Office 2010 Professional Plus I started the setup and when
it asked what  I wanted to do I answered Repair.
When this was finished I retried the update to SP2 and it worked.
It would be nice to know why it was failing but the pressure is off now.

  • Office 2010 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installation failing with error code 0x80070643 and B56

I've been trying to install Office 2010 service pack 2 (32 bit) multiple ways without success. I've tried getting it directly from Microsoft Update, downloading the full file from Microsoft and installing it, using WSUS to deploy to clients, and I've tried
using LANDesk to deploy it. All methods are failing.
I need a solution that doesn't involve touching each PC manually, as I have a feeling this error is going to occur on several hundred PC's in my organization. So far on a group of 15-20 test PC's, every one has failed. We have not had problems with any other
    Microsoft Updates before this one.
When I try Microsoft Update, I receive the following error:
Code B56  Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I too have been unable to install the Office 2010 SP2 update on either a Win7 or a Win 8 system.  Researching the errors I got led me to discover the following:
    1. Many people are encountering errors during the SP2 installation. Some were able to get around it by downloading the self-installing package and bypassing Windows Update.  Some were able to get it installed by first doing a Repair on Office 210 itself
first, and then installing SP2.  But many others have not been able to install it at all.
    2. Apparently a common and insurmountable issue that prevents SP2 from installing is the lack of the MSOCACHE directory.  This directory normally gets installed on a machine during the original install of Office, and contains all the install files used
during the installation.  Apparently the idea behind creating MSOCACHE was to allow subsequent updates without requiring the user to have the original source CD available.
The problem is that if MSOCACHE is deleted, which is an option many people choose, you can then no longer do any updates to Office.
I am one of those people.
I found a posting that described a way to recreate MSOCACHE from the source CD.  I did that, and the SP2 update actually got farther - it started to install stuff but then stopped and asked for a particular file.  I found the file on the CD and
pointed the installer to it, but it said the file was not found and quit.  So my install still failed.
The last response I got at the Microsoft Answers site was to wait until SP2 is debugged.  It's not clear to me this will ever happen, but we'll see.

    Hi,
Boot your system in clean boot mode and disable antivirus. Then try to run Windows Updates.
Step 1: Try following the KB article to perform Clean Boot.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After you used the clean boot to resolve your problem, reset the computer to start as usual.
    Step 2: Disable Antivirus software
Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you
should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Unexpected restarts when deploying Windows 7 and Office 2010 updates

    Hi
I am deploying Windows 7 and Office 2010 updates via SCCM 2012 sp1 and have a couple of questions
    Question 1)
The updates are made available to clients at 9am on a Tuesday morning.  The users get notification that updates are available to install.  If the user doesn't install the updates, the client will wait 24hrs and then install the updates automatically.
We have set the restart behaviour to 24hrs, so again, the user will get a pop up saying that their machine will restart in 24hours.  In my testing I have seen no more pop ups appear until 15 minutes before a restart is due and then a window appears
with a count down of 15 minutes but I think this might be standard behaviour.  I am not sure why there are options in the client settings to remind users frequently about the impending installation of update but not of impending restarts.  The
reason we delay the restart by 24hrs is to give the users the chance to restart their machines over night.  Is there a way of providing more notifications of computer restarts ?  The User Experience in the deployment of the updates is set to
Display in software center and show all notifications.  We have Group Policy set to Not Configured for Windows Updates apart from the user policy
Remove Access To All Windows Update Features which is set to 0 - Do not show any notifications.
    Question 2)
Another issue we have is that we have client machines restarting without any warning at all.  I have tested setting the user experience to suppress restarts but have the issue regardless.  It appears that this happens if the client
is off when the deployment schedule reaches its deadline and the restart time is missed.  I had one user who did restart her machine because she was prompted to restart.  When the machine came back up it looked like it installed another update and
then just resarted without any warning.  This hasn't happened often but a one user was on a Lync call when the restart occured and she was not happy.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Daniel
I have done an RSOP on a VM I am testing and only have the user policy :
Remove Access To All Windows Update Features which is set to
0 - Do not show any notifications.
    And the machine policy :
Specify intranet Microsoft update service location which is set to
Enabled The GPO Name is Local Group Policy
    The policies look OK.
As a test I have deployed some updates and set the user experience to
Display all notifications and set the Suppress restarts
for both Servers and Workstations.  When I deploy the updates, I get notifications that the updates are installing (when the deadline is met) and then I get a prompt telling me that a restart is required.  I also get a windo letting me restart now
or I can ask to be reminded in x number of hours.  This seems like expected behaviour.  It does not force a restart.  However if I leave the VM on over night I come in the following day and can see it has restarted.  looking at the WindowsUpdate.log I
can see that at 3:15am the line AUInvoking reboot system.  It looks like Windows Updates and not SCCM is forcing the restart.
    Thanks

Your issue is completely different. You are running Snow Leopard. There is no download for Windows Support software for Snow Leopard, hence the error you see. Snow Leopard Windows Support software is on the Snow Leopard installation disk.
You need the Snow Leopard installation disk or a replacement for it.

  • EPM 11.1.2 with Windows 7 and Office 2010

    Hi all,
We are getting majorly upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010 soon. We use EPM 11.1.2 suite of products. Will all the end-user web applications still work?
I already found out that Smartview 11.1.2 is not supported for Office 2010.
Does anybody have experience working with 11.1.2 and Windows 7?
    Thanks,
    Sujani

According to Oracle Support, KB ID 1191235.1, there is Office 2010 suport for 9.3.3 and 11.1.1.3.02. That release is patch 9889521 and is for SmartView only.
Havnig said that, people seem to be using it:
    Essbase excel add-in 11.1.2 with office 2010 Excel ?
Re: Hyperion Essbase Excel Addin - Unable to connect
Of course you take your own chances with this -- it is an unsupported combination right now.
    Regards,
    Cameron Lackpour
P.S. John Booth posted today a different patch release (I know, you're on 11.1.2, but for the 11.1.1.3 readers): http://www.network54.com/Forum/58296/thread/1294100830/Does+11.1.1.3+support+Windows+7+and+Office+2010-
I'd be more inclined to go with John's patch number than mine -- I am just browsing through Oracle support -- he does infrastructure for real.

One note -- the KB article was dated 21 Dec 2010, so it's pretty close to up to date.

    Hello,
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.  I have an older Windows Server 2008 SP2 (I don't believe it is R2) (running SQL Server 2008 and SSRS 2008 on the machine) that is crashing randomly
during business hours.  Looking into the event logs, I have found the following:

A few hours later, the crash happened again, with a slightly different error:

  • BPC NW SP5 with Windows 7 and Office 2010 -  issues with EvDRE reports

    Hi All,
We are facing a BPC front end issue with the following symptoms:
    1. Any report with multiple EvDREs crashes out either instantly or within a few minutes of operation.
    2. Two EvDRE reports (or one report and one input tempate) crashes same as above.
The crash is either an EvDRE error message or an endless wait for the server to respond (where we have to eventually terminate the application).
We were suggested to move  to sp7 but the issues persisted.
We do have a message and SAP is helping us investigate. What I want to understand from everyone is are there customres  successfully using this combination  (BPC NW SP5 Windows 7 and Office 2010) along with the above features?
Customer is really loosing confidence in the solution and is eager to find out if we are the only one using this.
    Regards
    Anupam

    Hi Zach,
While I do understand we need to isolate the problem but testing on different combinations, customer at the moment is not inclined for this and is looking for other customer references that this environment is stable.

  • Office 2010 SP2 deploy several systems

We are deploying Office 2010 Standard thru Group Policy. SP2 i downloaded later so there are a dozen systems already installed office without the SP2. The meaning is to also install the SP2 Office to the machines which have gotton Office 2010 without SP2.
The quistion i have is: how do i deploy SP2 Office update thru GPO to several machines which already got the Office 2010 Standard installed. How to install Updates office thru GPO? This is not a setup file but all MSP files in the SP2?
I have already seen that one can do it by script but how?
    freddie

    Hi,
Your require could be done via script. I think you need to add some if-else sentences in the script. We could use version number to determine which machines need to install SP2.
The version number of Office 2010 SP2 is greater than or equal to 14.0.7015.1000.
The version number of Office 2010 SP1 is greater than or equal to 14.0.6029.1000 but less than
    14.0.7015.1000.
The version number of the original RTM release of Office 2010 (that is, with no service pack) is greater than or equal to
    14.0.4763.1000 but less than 14.0.6029.1000.

If you need more help about writing the script, please post your qusetion to script center forum:

    any ideas why its failing?

    Hi,
I've seen the same error on a customer where we had Windows Intune Client (SCCM) installed previously. Did you try it on a newly deployed computer? If you had Intune or another CCM client on it previously make sure you clean it up. Here is a well formulated
    instruction:
    http://douwevanderuit.wordpress.com/2014/01/30/removing-windows-intune-client/
Usually when deploying to many clients we use a startup script, there is a great one that Jason Sandys made in the link below.
    http://blog.configmgrftw.com/configmgr-client-startup-script/
There should be no problems deploying SCCM 2012 R2 clients on Windows 8.1 unless there is something wrong with either the setup or the client computer.
All the best, Jesper Hassing - MCTS SCCM 2012 - MCSA 2012 Server - MCP
