"windows update other products" by GPO
Hi everyone,
could someone give me the steps how to enable "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" by GPO ?
Thanks!
Flavio Ribeiro
Hi Flavio Ribeiro,
I agree with Andreas. It seems that there no group policy can help you to achieve this target. There is a similar
thread, please refer to.
Can I force Windows Update to "receive updates for windows and other products" using group a policy?
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/80fa1086-3fd2-4bdd-a3bd-9af11c3d555b/can-i-force-windows-update-to-receive-updates-for-windows-and-other-products-using-group-a-policy?forum=winserverGP
As Andreas suggests, you may need to use a script as a workaround. Please refer to the article:
Opt-In to Microsoft Update and following script.

and Disabling Microsoft Update in Windows 7 via Script
Hope this helps.

Unable to switch from Windows Update to Microsoft Update
On a new Windows 7 64 bit computer I am unable to access Microsoft updates. Windows update works fine, but when I click the link to get updates for other Microsoft Products it will only take me to the screen that tells me to use the start menu to check for
updates. I have also tried other links to Microsoft Update from other Microsoft webpages and end up with the same result.
I have Office 2013 Standard installed and activated, and from previous installation experience know that I should be able to access numerous updates through this method.
To verify that I am able to install updates for Office I manually downloaded and installed one Office 2013 update through the Microsoft download site.
How do I get this machine to switch to Microsoft Update?Hi,
According to your description, I think you may had a misunderstand between these two updates installation. Here is a paragraph which talking about Use Windows Update to Check for Updates to other Microsoft Products:
By default, Windows Update can download and install updates for Windows 7 and features that are part of the operating system (such as Internet Explorer). You can also merge the functionality of Microsoft Update—a service for managing updates to Microsoft
Office and several other Microsoft products—into Windows Update so that you no longer need to visit Office Online to get updates.
If you do not already have Windows Update integrated with Microsoft Update, you will see the message “Get updates for other Microsoft products” on the Windows Update home page. To enable checking for other products, click the Find Out More option shown beside
this message. This will take you to the Microsoft Update site for some quick installation steps. You only need to do this once. Thereafter, the Windows Update home page will indicate that you receive updates “For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update.”

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Windows related issue, let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

Enable Microsoft Update (not just Windows Update) for Windows 2008 R2
I am running Windows 2008 R2 in my Citrix XenApp 6.5 farm.
Office 2013 is installed.
I can't update Office via Windows Update. Why? Take a look at this ridiculous roundabout tautology it takes me through.
Here I am in the Windows Update panel:
If I click "Find out more" to get updates for other Microsoft Updates it takes me here:
Yeah, duh, I was just in there when I clicked the link to get to this site. What's the deal?
How does one enable all Microsoft Updates for a Windows 2008 server. I can do this in 2003 easily by going to the Microsoft Update website. 2008 however, this appears to be impossible and apparently no one else in the world has noticed this.these discussions should help:

Image Deployment Changes Windows Update from Windows and MS Update to Just Windows Only
Before capturing an image I make sure that Windows update is set to update "Windows and other products from Microsoft Update". After and capturing and deploying the image I notice on the client machine it has been set to Windows only. There
is nothing in the TS that I know of that would switch this....I am not running any updates or anything in the TS. Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks in advanceSysprep changes this setting before the image is captured. This is normal behaviour.

Hi,
We work on a domain that uses Symantec Management console to administrate our patch enviroment. We have windows updates disabled. But our Windows 8 machines get this message once a month
"Windows update hasn't been able to check for updates for the last 30 days"
Just wondering if anyone knows which GPO to use to disable this setting as I have been unable to find it.
ThanksHi,
You can turn off the message by GUI in Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center, in the right pane, click "Change Action Center settings", then untick the "Windows Update" option.
For GPO, you can disable all balloon notifications:
User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar\Turn off all balloon notifications
Or remove Action Center icon itself
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove the Action Center icon
And I haven't found a GPO to turn on\off a specific message mentioned in the action center, but the setting for the message is related with registry key under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Action Center\Checks
but the value under the key is binary, hard to control, if you have interest, you can export the key from a preference pc, then deploy the GPO via
User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry

Can't get Windows update to download updates for other MS products
Hi,
Installed W7 Home Premium on a single system and for one or another reason I cannot get Windows Update to download updates for other Microsoft products. MS Office University 365, MS Visual Studio Pro 2013 and Microsoft Expression are also installed on this
system.
I click on Find Out More in the Windows Update page and IE 11 opens. It first goes to http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-au and then redirects to http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5
Here is a picture of the page:
As you can see there is no change settings button as described at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/change-windows-update-installation-notification#1TC=windows-7 .There is no way I can change settings so updates for other MS products are also downloaded.
Firefox is my default browser; even if I load the link in Firefox I get the same result.
Thanks,
ImranDon't use a web browser to do that. Since Vista, WindowsUpdates are no longer performed in a web browser, it's in Control Panel. (that's why the
www.update.microsoft.com web page is telling you to check Start Menu")
The Change Settings button, appears in the Windows Update applet in Control Panel.
Click "Start", and in the search box, type in: Windows Update. Or, look on Start Menu. Or go to Control Panel/System&Security/WindowsUpdate.

Windows Update GPO - Important versus Recommended/Optional - Getting Microsoft Optional
I'm looking at the
Computer > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
elements. There's an item for "Turn on Recommended Updates via Automatic Updates".
What I'm hoping to do is to enable the Recommended / Optional updates for Microsoft updates ONLY.
I am NOT referring to the "other Microsoft products" updates.
I do NOT want to get the third party updates and drivers (i.e., nVidia drivers) via Windows Updates that show up as recommended/optional updates.
I do want to get the Microsoft roll-up's and other Microsoft recommended Windows patches, security fixes, etc.
Is there a way to get the Microsoft recommended/optional items but not the third party items?
I'm running Server 2012 native with Windows 8.1 clients.
It seems odd that there is no GPO element to control this.Hi,
Windows Updates are classified as Important, Recommended, Optional, and Featured. Here's what they mean:
•Important updates offer significant benefits, such as improved security, privacy, and reliability.
•Recommended updates address non-critical problems or help enhance your computing experience.
•Optional updates can include updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft to enhance your computing experience. You can only install these manually.
>>I do want to get the Microsoft roll-up's and other Microsoft recommended Windows patches, security fixes, etc.
You can set Windows to automatically install important and recommended updates, or to install important updates only. The following policy setting is used to configure clients
to automatically install important updates:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Configure Automatic Updates
If you also want to automatically install recommended updates, you should enable the setting
Turn on Recommended Updates via Automatic Updates as you mentioned.
Regarding Windows updates, the following article can be referred to for more information.

Windows Updates GPO and restarts
Our environment consists of 15-20 Windows 2008 virtual servers, and ideally I would like for updates to download and install at a specified time. Getting that right seems easy enough via GPO, but what I am trying to avoid is the server auto-restarting afterwards.
My goal is to just be able to go in manually after scheduled updates should have occurred and reboot the server on my own.
I can see where you can enable "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations", but my concern is the "logged on users" part.
Meaning, I log on and off to my servers via RDP to do anything. So with that in mind, if my scheduled updates are taking place late at night when nobody is "logged on", it would seem this setting would have it auto-restart because nobody appears
logged on. Am I thinking correctly on this?this topic gets discussed a lot in the WSUS forum, since it's all about the WUAgent behaviour and the settings WUAgent is influenced by (and some settings are offered by GP but are not honoured on all versions of Windows).
Although the templates and settings are part of GP, it's not actually a GP function, it's actually a WUAgent thing.
WUAgent settings are a little "misleading", in that you can nominate the day/time to perform a scan + install, but you can't control the day/time of any subsequent restart, using basic GP settings (which is why there are other products like ConfigMgr and
3rd party products, both of which use the WU APIs and SDK)
Lawrence has written a number of blog posts on his solarwinds blog, detailing the various settings and how they behave, on different versions of Windows.

Some computers download and install the two approved updates, others only download Windows Update Agent and not the approved updates.

After downloading the latest Windows updates I found that I could not play videos on YouTube or at other sites. Switching to other browsers I found I could play those same videos now without any problem. So I did a System Restore to determine if the Windows updates had affected video play using Firefox. The restore point was set to the day before the Windows download occurred. After System Restore was completed I could now play videos using the Firefox browser.
To make sure that the Windows update was the problem, I again downloaded the newest Windows Updates and once again could not play videos on any site using Firefox. System restore was used to again reset my computer to the day before and once again the videos would ow play in the Firefox browser.Actually your reply took me in another direction and I found this on the Adobe site:
The RealPlayer extension for Firefox, Downloading & Recording, has compatibility issues with Flash Player 11.3. If RealPlayer is installed Flash Player content does not appear. YouTube provides an error message when you try to watch a video.
As a workaround, do the following:
Start RealPlayer.
Click the RealPlayer icon in the upper-left corner and select Preferences.
Select Download & Recording in the left menu and deselect Enable Web Download & Recording for These Installed Browsers option.
Click OK and restart Mozilla Firefox.
Once I followed this I could now again play videos in Firefox. -
this is not a discussion, i want the option to not install other products when i download an update.
Download the Adobe Flash Player installer directly by clicking one of the following links.
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
THERE'S your option, right there. -
On 7-20-2014 I installed various windows updates. Later that day I shut down my computer and after a few hours powered it back on. At this point my system started running chkdsk and was unable to read portions of the disk.
After it went through all 3 phases it booted up fine. So I ran two tests. A Seagate HDD tool for windows and ran activeSMART tools. Both of them said there are errors to my HDD and that I should back up and get a new HDD.
It just doesn't make sense that in the span of a few hours my otherwise perfectly fine working HDD would send back all of these errors. There are no sounds coming from the drive to indicate mechanical failure, and otherwise I have no problems using the system;
no slow downs opening files etc.
Please if anyone knows of any current Windows Updates that could be causing this I would very much like to know as that is one of the only things I can think of that could be causing these errors. Thank you.I agree with Frederic. In addition to this: Do not hesitate and backup your data, buy new disk and make new installation. If you have problems with retrieving some files, use program
Recuva.
Not all HDD failures are accompanied by noise. Imagine failure of hdd electronics. Not all mechanics stop functioning with noise.
I have never experienced any update problem that had caused mechanical failure. Perhaps large disk activity during updates accelerates the disaster process in your computer.
In my personal opinion the "low price goal" is behind the higher failure rate. For disk vendors it is cheaper to replace several failked disks than do thorough test of all disks (or memory, etc.) I had mechanical disk that ended its life in
two months... (Do not be fooled by large MTBF values. These are extrapolated data from hdd sets.)

Having issues deploying Windows updates
System Center 2012 Config Manager - 5.0.7804.1000 running on Win Server 2008 R2 SP1
Approx 75 servers (Mix of Server 2003, 08 and 12) and 60 workstations (All Win 7 x64)
I took over managing my companys SCCM 2012 a few months ago. I have System Center 2012 Endpoint running from here for all clients with an auto-update rule to update AV signatures. All seems well with AV - I see updates being installed and custom AV profiles
being applied to each respective machine.
I've been struggling with getting Windows updates deployed. I followed guides at windows noob and others, but I'm definitely missing something.
I was trying to deploy like this: Filter updates and select ones I need (For example, my Win 7 clients - All Win 7 updates except IE 10 or 11, all Office 2010 updates, and MS Silverlight updates) From there I create a deployment package, and then deploy to
my Win 7 device collection. (We run custom apps that require IE 9, and cant upgrade IE version yet)
In that collection I have maintenance windows for every weeknight 6pm-7am, and of Saturday and Sunday. I don't use the UTC time as indicated in some of the guides, I need it to run on EST (I did try it with UTC, but did not notice a change)
I can browse to the UNC share with the updates in there and see nightly syncs with Microsoft.
Under Monitoring - System Status - Site status I see OK under all components, same with component status.
I have GPO pointing to the SCCM server with the correct port. Like I said, AV updates are being pushed out but for some reason Windows updates are not being installed. When I look at the properties of my machine for example, I see under deployments
all of my updates along with AV signatures.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Please let me know what logs or additional info are needed.
Thanks,
JeffNot sure what guide says that but it sounds like they are mis-interpreting what's going on. On the back-end, ConfigMgr almost always uses UTC, it's easier than always having to convert everything. But for humans, it's not easier. Also, if you're a global
enterprise, do you really want everything happening across the globe at the same time?
As for your reboots, I don't know what rebooted them -- it could have been the WUA or your MW which may have been misconfigured. I can't say what's going on other than I know it works well because I've done it for many customers in production. There are
some bugs and flukes will happen though.
My best advice at this point is to bring in someone who can sit and examine what's going on first hand (it's very difficult to do this in the forums) or open a case with CSS.

Forefront Client Security to use Windows updates when WSUS not available
Hi all,
We currently deploy Forefront Client Security as our AV product to our estate and we use WSUS to get any definition update required.
However, we have a number of laptops that have been taken off site and have not been receiving any virus definition updates because they are off the domain.
We have a GPO in place that disables Windows Updates on all clients and redirects it to our WSUS server and we then use SCCM to push out our updates.
We also have a VPN client that won't allow you to connect to the network unless your virus definitions are up to date. This is obviously an issue as anyone who has a laptop and hasn't connected to the domain in a while won't have the latest windows updates
or virus definitions applied.
We need a way of ensuring those laptops get the latest updates before connecting via VPN.
Is there any way to do this?
Rgds,
MarkHi,
You could use NAP feature in SCCM 2007 which can help protect the integrity of your enterprise network to enforce compliance of software updates on client computers.
