Windows update running with services disabled

I have a lab of windows 7 laptops on a domain for reasons I don't want to get into I have via group policies temporarily disabled the sms client agent service, and the windows update service.
The strange issue I am having is windows update is still installing updates with the services disabled? Yes I have verified the services are disabled and stopped.
Anybody want to enlighten me on how this can occur?
thanks

Anybody want to enlighten me on how this can occur?
I'd rather look at the log file and determine exactly how it DID occur rather than speculate on the several ways it could have occurred.
But as a starting point I'd offer the suggestion that what you did is probably not the correct way to prevent a machine from getting patches. (Well, I guess that's kind of obvious now, isn't it. :-) )
Please post the segment of the WindowsUpdate.log file for the period of time that these updates were actually installed.

    Hi Drgeert-
The hub may not be broken per se, but Apple has made adjustments to the limits on current that can be drawn from ports.
You probably need a new hub.

Windows 8 Windows Update fails with error 80244FFF

    Hi @SURAJITsaha ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 14-b049tu Sleekbook and issues with a Windows update.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.
You might have to temporarily disable your virus protection.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

How can I recognized an iPhone 3GS on iTunes 11.0.4.4 version on PC Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3?

Plug the device into the computer and iTunes will detect it.  If that is not working, then stating as such would be a good start.

Trying to find a fix to the Windows Update issue with Windows 10 TP 9926 build and can't find the correct forum to post this question?
This will impact receiving the new build upgrades and will impact test strategy for the new supported OS in our desktop application.

    Might try them over here.

  • Can't install quicktime or itunes I recieve error code 2738.  I'm running windows Vista 32 with Service Pack 2.  I have tried old and new version of both programs.  Also, have gone through Apple's online help with no good outcome

Can't install quicktimeor uninstall it for that matter and itunes I receive error code 2738 with both downloads.  I'm running Window Vista with Service Pack 2.  I have check for all window update.  I have gone through Apple itune help list.  Even going into cmd to do regsvr32 vbscript.dll which was successfull. Can you help...my son had to register his ipod at the neighbors house..What going on.
Son even call apple with no help and was give Microsoft number no help there either they wanted me to call HP.....run around

    Excellent news!
Strange how sometimes the fixit works better than the manual methods, and sometimes the manual methods work better than the fixit. It differs from Microsoft fixit to Microsoft fixit too. (Unfortunately, because these "anomalous 2738s" are pretty rare as install errors go, I don't have a good feel yet for whether or not it's the fixit or the manual method that's more likely to work in iTunes/QuickTime installation contexts.)
Afraid I'm not very good on earbud troubleshooting, but fingers crossed the folks over at the iPod communities might be able to help:

  • 2008 r2 Windows update Failed with 8000FFFF

    HI
One of our clients has not run windows update in sometime. It was setup for automatic updates so they had never checked their server manually for updates.
We have tried to reset the components using several methods from a whole day of gooling this fix.  During the night last night we run scandisk with repair which was mentioned on several other threads.
after resetting the windows update components
When we click install now. it immediately fails with error 8000FFFF
I then opened event viewer to find the log. It lead me to a local file which reads:
    Version=1
    EventType=WindowsUpdateFailure
    EventTime=130463490243270806

I then googled 174EAAC7-5A3D-448F-BE6F-D6FE450E1DCF and found an article advising me to try and install system update readiness tool which too failed with the 8000FFFF
I have checked for viruses/malware and that seems ok.  MS Security essentials is able to download and install updates just fine.
The machine is running IE9.  I tried downloading both IE10 & IE11 which say components are required before installing the selected IE and takes me to a web page.
I downloaded all the x64 updates, when i execute they all fail with the 8000FFFF error.
we also tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us which did not help it failed at the end with:
Can anyone suggest anything that we could do to try and fix this error?

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay. According to the log, you get
    0x80190194
    0x80190194 -2145844844 BG_E_HTTP_ERROR_404
The requested URL does not exist on the server.
Is there any problem with the other computers in the same network? If so, I guess there could be some problem with your network. Confirm this with your proxy server or ISP.
If not please reset windows update component and try again.
How do I reset Windows Update components?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-au
    Hope this helps.

  • How to quickly recover from the broken Exchange Server VM due to Windows Update patch or Service Pack ?

    Folks,
I'm planning to apply the Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 and also applying the Cumulative Update 7 along with Windows Update which haven't been done since the past two years (~100+ patches).
So in this case it I cannot afford to lose any of the Exchange Server due to the bad updates or broken server due to patches. At The moment all of the VMs currently running on VMware:
    HT/CAS role Windows NLB:
    PRODMAIL01-VM
    PRODMAIL02-VM
    Mailbox Server stand-alone non-DAG:
    PRODMBX01-VM
    PRODMBX02-VM
    Domain Controllers:
    PRODDC01
    PRODDC02
    My questions are:
    1. When taking the VMware snapshot for easy roll-back, do I have to take the entire 2 sets of the domain controller as well?
    2. Assuming I have done the Schema Update successfully and moving on to apply the SP3 to the HT/CAS server role, do I have to take both of the mailbox server VMs snapshot as well?
    3. Can I disconnect the virtual NIC inside the guest OS to safely take snapshot before applying the patches or service pack ? or do I have to let the network to be always connected during the Service Pack or CU patch process ?
Any kind of suggestion for a better way to quickly roll back broken Exchange server due to patching would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

Some hypervisors include features for taking snapshots of virtual machines. Virtual machine snapshots capture the state of a virtual machine while it's running. This feature enables you to take multiple snapshots of a virtual machine and then revert the
virtual machine to any of the previous states by applying a snapshot to the virtual machine. However, virtual machine snapshots aren't application aware, and using them can have unintended and unexpected consequences for a server application that maintains
state data, such as Exchange. As a result, making virtual machine snapshots of an Exchange guest virtual machine isn't supported.
The only supported way to recover a lost Server is gracefully through Setup either Add/Remove programs or recoverserver option

  • Windows update crashes with a blue screen to restart

windows updates were in the process of download , and the internet crashed before i finish the updates , and when the internet came back , instead of continuing to download the rest of the update , it said install as it's fully downloaded
and whenever i press install it gets blue screen with a thread_pointer exception i guess
so , why there is no option to redownload the update from the beginning ??
i tried to restore the pc before any updates but it crashed on the same point so i don't know why and how to fix this
update name :windows 8.1 update for x64 based Systems (kb2919355) 890.2 mb
my operating system is windows 8.1
my lap is toshiba core i5 ram 4
    model : satellite c660-1me
i searched alot but i couldn't fix it
    thanks

In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the
    %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and
all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip
containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Prefered sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers.
    4 (optional): The
type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps
in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains much more
information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps
are much larger in size due to containing
much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUp Utilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon
    use.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type
%systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key +
Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'.
    3. Windows key +
Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check
    that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it
and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.

  • Will All Types of Windows Apps Run With BootCamp?

I am fed up with the quality of Windows hardware and computers and am considering the purchase of a MacBook Pro to use with both operating systems. I am a long time user and developer on both OSX and Windows. My question is, can I expect programs such as Microsoft Visual Studio with all of its add-ins and other development software to work correctly running Windows 7 on the Intel Mac? I have heard horror stories about using Parallels and I don't mind rebooting to change operating systems, but I also don't have the time to deal with any additional issues other than what I am going to face anyway with these programs running in native windows. Will they run on the Mac as well as they run on a Windows box?

Graphic drivers are often a pain to install, and some Windows updates have been tricky or not worked.... .NET Framework update was one such.
Yes, "it should" but due diligence, backups, and I would say the same for Mac or any OS.

  • Windows Update Helps with File Size Issues?

I'm just wondering if anybody has recently noticed an
improvement related to the file size issue variously reported
    throughout the forums?
I ask because our IT folks distributed a Windows update on 2
days last week and since the application of those updates I have
not experienced the freakishly large file sizes and the related
performance issues in Captivate. Unfortunately I don't have any of
the details of what patch(es) were installed, as it was part of our
boot script one morning and I didn't even realize it was updating
until I received the Reboot Now or Later alert.
Anyway, I was curious because I have experienced significant
    performance improvement since then.

If you are using a remote workflow ... designers are sending off-site editors InCopy Assignment packages (ICAPs) .... then they need to create assignments in order to package them for the remote InCopy user. So there's no need to split up a layout into smaller files or anything.  An assignment is a subset of the INDD file; multiple assignments -- each encompassing different pages or sections -- are created from the same INDD file.
When the designer creates the assignment, have them turn off "Include original images in packages"; that should keep the file size down.
Or -- like Bob said -- you can avoid the whole remote workflow/assignment package rigamarole all together by just keeping the file in a project folder in the Dropbox folder on teh designer's local hard drive, and have them share the project folder with the editors. In that workflow, editors open the INDD file on their local computer and check out stories, just as though they were opening them from a networked file server.
I cover how the InCopy Dropbox workflow works in a tutorial video (within the Remote Workflows chapter) on Lynda.com here:
