Windows Update Wheel Spins Indefinitely

So recently I changed a setting in W8.1's "PC Settings" app, where it would automatically download updates, but ask me when to update them.  For the past few days, I've gotten a notification to update, which I went to go try to do, but was
left with a spinning wheel of death: Windows Update Screenshot
System Specs:
Intel i5 4570
MSI Z97 PC Mate
Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB
8GB DDR3 RAM
Samsung Evo 840 250GB SSD (boot)
2TB SSHD (large programs and data)
Corsair 750M PSU
I'm not really sure what to do from here.  Any suggestions?

So recently I changed a setting in W8.1's "PC Settings" app, where it would automatically download updates, but ask me when to update them.
I have found that sometimes it is better to let the update happen during a reboot than trying to make it happen while still connected, e.g. especially one which is going to cause a Restart anyway.  I think you may be able to do that by just checking
that you want it to be applied but waiting until you reboot to actually get it done.  Otherwise you could always temporarily change your setting back to the recommended setting.
FWIW I happen to have a Defender update that I would normally install manually while online but just to test the functionality that I mentioned I will just check it and then see if that changes my Shut down options...  Can't tell yet and I don't want
to Restart right now but I'll try to remember that I have done this.

  • After installing CC, loading wheel spins indefinitely

Downloaded and installed Adobe CC onto my iMac, but when I click on the top icon in the toolbar it only shows the blue loading wheel (instead of applications). It has been doing this for about an hour. Is this normal behavior?

Backup your user file folders (music, pictures, movies etc) off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine), make sure to export bookmarks, get email addresses and product keys etc so you can rebuild, disconnect the drive so you don't make mistakes.
Follow this and make sure to select the ENTIRE hard drive (drive makers name and size) and use Erase > Security option Zero all data in Disk Utility.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If the Zero erase hangs even after doing it twice, the hard drive is worthless and needs to be replaced by Apple (only)
This is optional, but read it also to have a fastest mac on Snow Leopard (the iMac can't replace the drive, but you can put in more memory)

  • Getting Mysterious Wheel Spin (Hang) with FCP, and iChat after updates

I have been running Adobe final cut Studio Pro (FCP) and Adobe CS2 for a while without a hitch. Over the past 3 days I updated to the latest updates (6.0.3) FCP. No problems. BTW on all the updates, I downloaded the update then installed it. I then downloaded and installed the 10.5.2 update. All seemed OK. I then installed Adobe CS3 Web Standard upgrade. Discovered I was missing a serial number so I stopped the installation. All still seemed OK. This morning I decided to start over with Adobe CS3, so I took all the CS3 programs in the application folder, moved them to the trash and then emptied the trash. Almost immediately after I started getting very strange actions with the FCP suite. I would start soundtrack PRO, and export an xml file to FCP, FCP would present the splash screen and then hang.Cann't kill it nothing. I had to reboot the system. Then I would sometimes get the same problem just starting sound track PRO. Still puzzled, I started iChat. the first time it worked, but then the second time it hungs (wheel spin) trying to start up. Each time I have to reboot the system to clear it out. I thought maybe it was the Adobe CS3 programs I deleted. I ran the install and it won't re-install the applications because it reports the programs are installed, but in fact they are deleted. I am about to wipe the disk and start over, but that means loosing a couple of days reloading everything.
don't have a clue what to do. Anyone have any thoughts ideas???
    thanks

  • Since my last update on OSX10.9.2 My mac hardly starts up. and whats with that rainbow wheel spinning all the time

It's not booting uplike it should. Its very slow. Rainbow wheel spinning all the time. Augh!

Make sure you have a backup.  You should always have a backup and especially when your Mac is ailing.
    Time Machine Basics:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Most commonly used backup methods:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3045
    Try and SMC Reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Look in the Applications/Utilities folder and run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.
Try booting in Safe Mode (Boot and hold down the Shift key.)  It should take longer to boot and shutdown. Once it is booted is it more responsive?
Please download and run Etrecheck and post back the results.

  • Issue with mail, it freezes everytime I open it, the wheel spins.

ONce opened mail freezes and the wheel spins. In the Window menu there are 12-15 message viewers, telling me that are open, but do not appear anywhere on the finder. It appears that it maybe a conflict of some sort, but I can not figure it out. No updates have been made recently, mail has just got slower and slower to now where it won't let me do anything? System software is up to date and running on 10.6.8. Really don't want to have to go through the reinstalling process, can anyone help?

  • Windows Update Causes G500/Win8.1 to basically lock up

I have a G500 with a Win 8.1 OS and windows update causes for lack of better words a lock up.
What happens is I'll restart the system and Windows Update will kick in with a couple product updates and that will take about ten min or so and then a message pops up Windows update failed reverting system settings do not turn off your PC and a little spinning wheel off to the side that just spins and spins. First time it happened I let it spin for about six hours and then did a system reinstall and everything was fine for about a day or so and Windows Update started up again with the exact same result and I ended up reinstalling the OS again.
I have Windows Update turned completely off right now.
Any idea what is going on and how to correct the problem?

    hi scjax2014,
Your issue might be similar to this thread.
The "Failure configuring updates" error message can be caused by a security software that's blocking the update (eg. Norton 360, Mcafee Internet Security, etc.)  or a BIOS setting like Secure Boot.
To isolate, can you try the following:
    1. Apply one of the resolution in this microsoft article.
    2. If same problem, try to Install the Windows Updates manually by navigating to Control Panel (large icon view) > Windows Update.and select "Check for updates" (Windows will now gather updates applicable for your machine). When finished, click on the important updates install the updates in this order (oldest ones first):
      - Critical Updates (if any)
      - Security Updates
      - Updates for Windows 8
If you still get an error, try to install the updates one by one or three at a time and observe.

  • Dell Latitude E6520 fails to boot after Windows Updates

    Hello,
I have a Dell Latitude E6520 that is not starting up after Windows updates. It installs updates and requests a reboot, after which it blue screens at the splash logo and reboots again. This goes on indefinitely. The only way to repair it is to boot from
    a recovery disk and run:
    dism /image:D:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
This is after running dism /image:D:\ /get-packages and noticing that several updates are still in an "Install_Pending" state. These are the kb's that are pending:

There were other updates, but those showed as installed. I would post the WindowsUpdate.Log, but I do not see a button to attach a file and the log is very long. Here is what I think is relevant towards the end of the log:

  • T430s unable to restart after Windows Update

I'll start with the short version. I just got my ThinkPad T430s, so there were a lot of Windows Updates to install. After one batch, I am no longer able to restart the machine. When I click Shut Down, Restart or Log Out, the desktop disappears, but instead of bringing up the "Shutting Down..." screen, it just shows the desktop background indefinitely until I power down by holding the power button. I have been unable to figure out what is causing this, how to fix it, or which Windows Update was the cause.
    Longer version:
I upgraded my machine from Windows 7 Home to Pro. After a series of Updates the problem started. I tried a lot of things, then decided to try reinstalling Windows. Again, it happened after a large chunk of Windows Updates. I have tried a million things. System Restore points don't fix it. "Clean Boot" doesn't fix it. Uninstalling Windows Updates doesn't fix it. Eventually I tried to use the Lenovo recovery CD, but it turns out the recovery partition only contains one of the 4 CDs you use. You don't find this out until you get an error that says "You have inserted the wrong disk" which occurs AFTER the recovery software has wiped all your partitions. So now my recovery partition is gone as well. My current plan is to install Windows fresh to hold me over until Lenovo can ship me the full set of recovery CDs, but if anyone has any ideas for what might be causing this no restart problem, I would appreciate it.

kb2647753 seems to be the problem child.

  • Colour wheel spinning when opening files using finder

    Hi all
I am a novice Mac user. I think I was using Mountain Lion (i paid for it - about £20) but upgraded to Mavericks last year when prompted by my software update. I now understand from reading various online posts that this means I am now stuck with it. At first I had lots of problems with PDF files crashing but this has been fixed. Today I am not having a nightmare trying to use Finder. Any time I click on a file or folder the colour wheel spins for about 10-20 seconds. This happens for every command I make. I just tried to access my files directly from the desktop and the same thing happened. I am not sure what to do and I dont want to end up deleting something important! I have a dissertation due on friday and the search function on Finder is badly needed to help me finish up my referencing. Can anyone help this IT inept student out? I tried to book a genius bar apt but they have nothing free til next week!
    Cheers

  • Windows Update not working on rebuilt RAID1 on Larger Drives -

Recovered an image from 320 gig drives to 500 gig drives.  Everything worked fine except both Lenovo and Windows Updates did not work.  Subsequently noticed that this was also true on the 320s and it happened a day or two before I imaged it (them).  Downloaded and installed the latest Lenovo System Update application and that cured both problems on the 320s but only cured the Lenovo updates problem on the 500s.  I've tried a few things written on the web and also tried to let the Windows online validation tool run but I've tried it twice but it doesn't end.  The last time it ran for over 1.5 hours without any resolution.  It just keeps spinning.
This is actually another opportunity generated from what I was doing in the post "How to Migrate a Raid1 to larger drives without having to rebuild on a W700?" but this seems like a different, though related, subject so I started a new post.  If someone thinks it best to combine them please do.
How can I get Windows Update to update?

I finally resorted to doing a fresh install and that solvesd the activation problem.

  • Iphoto on mac mini: wheel spins, won't open

Can anyone suggest what I can do for iphoto...wheel spins, can't get past that to open, download photos. Just locks up.
    Thanks,
    Good good

what version of iphoto did you have?
And no - iPhoto is not a part of Mavericks or of any OS - it is totally seperate - You may need to update (if you own any version of iPhoto '11) or purchase an upgrade (if you own older versions of iPhtoo) from the app Store
ANd of course using iPhoto is totally optional - you can download photos using image Capture (in your applications folder) or the fnder for most cameras and if you have a card reader using the finder and then use any photo management software you choose

  • Blue screen on start up.  The wheel spin and the blue screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.

When I start up my imac, I get a blue screen.  The wheel spin and the screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.

Are you referring to the startup screen which is normally gray with the dark gray Apple logo or are you referring the login screen which is typically blue? If it's the latter you might give this a try:
Clearing Caches to Fix Login Problem
You will need to type some Unix commands. If you are not comfortable with this, I don't know of anything other than a re-install. But if you are careful, you should be OK. I recommend you print this out in a largish mono-spaced font so you don't miss any spaces (or add extra ones). Note that case is important.
Be careful. Some of these commands are dangerous, since you are going to be root.
Start up in Single-user Mode. When this has finished you will see a prompt ending in '#', although there may be other messages. Enter the following commands after the prompt:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. Wait a few seconds for 8-10 lines of output. If the last line says repairs were carried out, repeat this command until you get a message 'The volume <yourdiskname> appears to be OK'. Then continue with:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Library/Preferences
    rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    rm com.apple.windowserver.plist
    cd /Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    cd /System/Library
    cd /System/Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    reboot
    Press RETURN after each command.
This should now take you to a proper login screen after the normal boot sequence. You should then Repair Permissions by using Disk Utility (in your /Applications/Utilities folder).
If it's the former then reinstall OS X. For Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
