Windows Updates showing Unknown computers

Hi,
I am deploying Windows Updates and the Statistics window shows a high number of 'Unknown' computers, how do I find out these machines and what is the best method to have this number as close to zero as possible?
In the Software Library > Software Updates > Software Update Groups pane the statistics are as below for Windows 7 Updates:

Hi,
We could get those machines which shows unknown from reports. Then troubleshoot the process for the software update group installation and the state messages sent to MP on some specific machines.

  • Software Updates Deployment Shows "Unknown" Computers, Previously Had Compliant

I'm not sure what is going on, but can anyone tell me why a software updates deployment would all of a sudden show all computers as having an "Unknown" status?  Previously, most computers were "Compliant" and there were a couple
with errors.  When I went to check it (about a week after the original deployment), I found it had reset all to "Unknown" status.  This was yesterday, and now today there are a couple computers showing "Compliant" but most are
still "Unknown".  It is not set up with ADR, so it's not (at least I don't think) looking for newer updates.  Any ideas?

A re-evaluation of the software update deployment, which you configure in the client settings, can cause this behavior. That's why you should always use the reports for compliance checks and not the deployments node.

  • Software updates to unknown computers during OSD

    Hi!
Trying to figure out why my computers during OSD not install software updates. I have deployed all my updates to Unknows Computers collection as available and configured "Install Software Updates" step to install "All software updates".
When i look into UpdatesDeployment.log i get error: "InstallTargetedUpdates failed, error 87d00708", which is according to
Torsten means that i does not find any applicable updates to install.
Do I have to deploy the updates as Required to "Unknows computers" for the updates to install?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Unknown computers include the following:
A computer where the Configuration Manager client is not installed
A computer that is not imported into Configuration Manager
A computer that is not been discovered by Configuration Manager
I think it is because you have SCCM clients installed on these computers when you use "Install Software Updates" step to install updates.

  • Firwfox will not download using Windows vista - shows unknown publisher

The unknown publishers issue seems to hinge on an problem with the digital signature. The error message is as follows:
    Internet explorer security warning
Windows has found a problem with this file.
    Name: itunessetup.exe
    Publisher: unknown publisher
This file was blocked because it does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher
The reason I was downloading Firefox in the first place was that I have this same issue when trying to dowwload i-tunes. One of the support groups suggested that downloading i-tunes through Firefox avoided this issue.
    Grateful for any ideas!

Don't click the Run button in IE to run the program directly, but save the file to your hard drive.

  • [Forum FAQ] How to show Windows Update in Control Panel in Clean Installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926

    Scenario
If you performed a clean installation of the new Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926, you would find Windows Update is only available in
Settings and is hidden in Control Panel by default. However, Windows Update is still available in Control Panel if it is an upgrade version of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926.
    Solution
After the comparison of the two different version, the differences is the following registry:

We’ve seen a few forum posts talking about changing registry keys to alter the update experience we shipped in Technical Preview build 9926. There are a couple of reasons that we don’t recommend doing things like that.
First, the default experience is what we’ve tested across not just the Windows 10 team, but across all of Microsoft before we released it to you. That doesn’t mean that you won’t still find bugs, but it’s definitely the code that’s been most thoroughly
tested. Changing things back to older versions is risky because the combination of those old settings with the rest of Windows 10 is not something that’s been validated or supported, so we can’t predict the side effects. It’s possible that changing registry
settings related to update could cause a machine to no longer be able to get new updates or Technical Preview builds.
The other reason to avoid changing the default update experience is that a lot of update-related code is actually being re-written in order to scale across the variety of different device types Windows 10 will support. Since Technical Previews are
a work-in-progress, some code that may still be in build 9926 won’t actually ship in the final version of Windows 10 that we provide to all our customers, so trying to re-enable that code temporarily won’t provide a way to accurately assess Windows 10’s update
    capabilities.
We want to hear your feedback! We’re sharing Technical Preview releases early so we can understand exactly how customers are using our software and make sure we are designing our experiences to address those scenarios. The more
specific the feedback, the more helpful it is for us – saying “I hate the new Windows Update UI” isn’t very useful, but when we see “I need to be able to tell Windows Update to grab updates from WU itself and not from my internal corporate server, so the new
Windows Update UI is painful for me”, we can actually understand what changes we could make to solve those specific problems. We can’t promise to fix everything that everyone asks for – and sometimes what one customer wants is exactly what another customer
doesn’t want – but the more you can help us understand why you want something changed, the better we can try to meet those needs.
Thanks for listening, and we look forward to hearing your responses.

  • Error code 80070103 during Windows Update

I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed as the OS in my T61p. Today, Windows Update showed the follwoing two updates available:
--  Update for Windows Live Sign-in Asistant (KB 967912)   --  Important
--  Lenovo - Other hardware  - ThinkPad PM Device    --   Recommended
The first one (Windows Live Sign-in Assistant) installed with no problems.
The second one (ThinkPad PM Device) failed installation and the following error message was provided:
Code 80070103  --  Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
It amazes me that Microsoft offers a specific update to my system and then, when it fails installation, all it can provide is a message about an unknown error...
After some research, it is still Microsoft itself that suggests I contact the hardware manufacturer for further assistance...
I am not aware of any problem with my system, so I'm tempted to just discard the update.
But, out of curiosity, I wonder what those PM initials (as in ThinkPad PM Device) stand for and also whether anyone has ever encountered this same problem and/or can provide any insights into the real meaning of the error message.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    homerhat,
I migrated to Windows 7 last December, a few weeks after I posted my cry for help... And I must say that one of the reasons I did it was that I was experiencing too many issues with Vista, especially with several WIndows updates that were just refusing to install. I tried everything, including on this forum and on Microsoft's forum, but no answers whatsoever were being received.
In one instance, a good soul accompanied my plight with a number of messages with as many suggestions, but nothing worked. I was getting really frustrated.
After moving to Windows 7, though, (I cross my fingers...) I did not encounter any situation of failed updates, so far.
But I think it was a great thing for you to post your experience even after you had resolved your issue. It may benefit someone along the road ant this, I think, is what these forums are all about.
This said, there are more responsive and less responsive forums and this Lenovo Community Forum, in my humble opinion, has known better times than in recent months. This is just my sincere opinion, based on my personal observation. I may be (and I wish I am) wrong.
    Cheers!

  • C855-S5190 restored via recovery to factory defaults, ran the Toshiba updater, no Windows Update

I'm desperately searching for help!  My elderly father has a C855-S5190 and after trying the update to Windows 8.1 from the store, the laptop doesn't boot all the way up - kept giving various errors.  So, he dropped if off for me to try to fix.  I couldn't get around it so I did the restore to factory defaults from the restore disks.
After that all finished, I tried the Toshiba service station and it gave me about 7 updates that I installed.  After that, I rebooted and then wanted to see about doing the Windows 8.1 update.  Went to Windows Store - it says I need to do Windows Updates.  I went to search, and now there's no Windows Update showing anywhere.  I checked settings, and everything is empty under there as well.  What happened??
If someone could tell me how I can possibly do the Windows Updates.  I tried this once before trying the service center, the updates either fail, or they install, then it reboots, can't configure them, and gets stuck in a loop of trying to roll things back.  That caused me to have to do another restore to factory defaults - I've had to do it 4 times so far, and I just don't want to get stuck in that loop again.  So, I need to know what happened to my Windows Update, how do I get it back, and how the heck do I get this thing updated to 8.1?
I booted a Linux live media before starting and was able to recover the files, etc., he had on it to a USB flash drive since I knew doing the restore would wipe that all out.
Any and all input is GREATLE appreciated!!
    Dave

Here's the link to the Microsoft page,  I had to do this to get Windows Update to run.  The Windows 8.1 upgrade would not let me do the upgrade until Windows Update was run, and I kept getting this error.  It takes a *long* time for this to straighten out if you've done a factory defaults restore - several reboots, etc..

  • Windows update fails to install graphic driver

    Hello everyone,
    I have a problem, I recently installed Windows 10 Technical build 9926.
Windows update shows me that there is a update available for my Nvidia geforce GT 520 M card.
If I install the driver the installation fails.  I have tried this for a couple of times but the problem stays.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem.
    My System specifications are:
Windows 10 Technical preview build 9926 ( upgrade from windows 8.1 via windows update)
    RAM: 6 GB
    CPU: Intel Core i5 2430M
    GPU: Nvidia geforce GT 520M

For what it's worth, as a rule, I NEVER install the video drivers offered via Windows Update. They have always been bad news for me. Case in point: I just upgraded my Dell Optiplex 9030 AiO to the Win 10 Ent Preview Build 9926. This PC has an AMD Radeon
R7 M265 video chipset in it, and the system automatically went to Windows Update to get the driver for it. As soon as the driver activated, the screen went blank and stayed that way. The only way to fix it was to roll back the the driver installation
with System Restore. When the PC rebooted, I unplugged the network cable so it couldn't attempt to install the flaky driver again. I downloaded the latest drivers from AMD directly and installed them. That fixed the problem.
So, my advice to you is to use the latest Windows 8/8.1 drivers for your card from the manufacturer's website. DO NOT USE VIDEO DRIVERS THAT ARE OFFERED VIA WINDOWS UPDATE. Other hardware drivers are usually okay, but the video drivers always seem to
    be whacked in some way.

  • Windows update not working on new Dell Inspiron 7000 (7537)

I currently have Windows 8 on my new dell inspiron (actually refurbished) 7000.  Only things I've done since getting the computer:  I removed McAfee and turned on Windows defender (which also won't update).  Windows update shows about 93 updates
but when I hit install it says it is downloading by never moves past 0%.  I used the auto fix that Microsoft offers for windows update to no avail.  Not sure what to do now.

    Hi,
    I agree with Milos.
I suggest you upload the Windowsupdate.log so that we can help you analyze the issue.
By default, the Windows Update client records all transaction   information to the following log file:
    %windir%\Windowsupdate.log
Meanwhile, please check the following services to ensure they are in a start state.
    Windows Module installer service
    Cryptographic Services
    Windows update services

  • Windows Update for Intel HD Graphics 3000 gives error 80070103

I have a Windows 7 x64 machine that has an Intel HD Graphics card. Driver details:
    Intel Corporation
    1/29/2014
    9.17.10.3347
This month's Windows Updates shows an optional update for me to update the Intel HD Graphics card. It says released by Intel January 2015 and released by Microsoft 3/12/2015. It looks like a more up to date driver but it will not install, instead I get that
    error 80070103.
I googled the error and it seems to indicate that the version of my driver is more recent than the version Windows Update wants to give me. I don't think that's right though, based on the dates. In the Device Manager when I click on the display adapter and
update driver it says the driver is already the most recent version. But it's not.
    Any ideas?

    Hi popchoc,
You may follow the suggestions provided by S.Sengupta.
Besides, regarding error 80070103, the below is the article talking about it:
    Windows Update error 80070103
If you receive Windows Update error 80070103 while installing updates, you might be trying to install a driver that is already installed on your computer or a driver that might be less compatible than one you already have installed. To find more information
or to get help, try these options:
If you want to install the latest driver for a specific device, program, or game, try manually updating the driver instead of using Windows Update. For more information, see
Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly.
    Go to the
Discussions in Windows Update website to see if someone else has found a solution or to request help from other Windows users.
    Go to  the
Microsoft Community website to try to find more information about the error code.
Hide the update so it's not offered again.

  • Internet Explorer 9 not showing as not installed when using Windows Update - Error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I built a few new Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 VMs today and ran into a problem where Windows Update is not detecting the fact that Internet Explorer 9 is already installed. Internet Explorer 9 keeps showing up as an available update when
using Windows Update. When I try to install it as a test I get the error message: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
My normal build procedures include applying all the patches for the OS prior to any other work on the servers. The way I like to do the patching is to do every update other then IE9 in the begininng and once all the other updates have been
completed, install IE9 and then patch it if there are updates available. I followed this procedure on every build for the last year and I have not run into any issues until today. The only difference today is the latest patches that were released yesterday
April 10th, 2012. To test the theory that it may be one of the latest patches, I reinstalled Windows from scratch making sure to format the disks and then I installed IE9 right after the OS install without any other updates. Once the
server was rebooted, I checked Windows Update and Internet Explorer 9 still showed up as update (Not the Cumulative Update which normally shows up after an IE9 install) and yes, I did make sure to click the 'Check for Updates' link before I looked just
in case. My next test was to patch a couple of the servers I had built prior to April 10th, 2012. Those servers did not have any issues with the latest updates and they are not experiencing the same behavior as the newly built servers.
I ended up comparing the IE9 Version on the cleanly install OS (No updates were installed except IE9) and the servers I built last week which were patched. The versions are exactly the same.
My findings above lead me to believe that there is a problem with the latest IE9 install package (which includes the latest cumulative update) and the Windows Update detection component.
I guess I am looking for someone to report this up the chain to get this fixed so no one else runs into this problem. I know in some cases we may not be able to see additional IE9 updates until this is resolved.

I just started having the same problem.
I was creating a new VM in Vsphere from our 2008 R2 SP1 image and it hasn't been updated and repacked in a while, so i have to install about 60 updates, including IE9.
I went through my normal setup as i had just created 2 VMs and updated them on Monday with no problem.
I got the same error code as you. The install looks like it installed IE9, but the update is still showing up as available in Windows Update.
I deleted the VM, created a new one, chose all updates except IE, then did that and it still shows up again.
Then i deleted the VM, installed just IE 9 and it still shows up as available on reboot.
I have a script that i can use to reset/clear WSUS cache on the computer, (Software distribution folder, and the windows update log, and recreates a certificate), so i tried that and then rebooted and it still showed up.
I then decide ok, maybe the Image got messed up somehow, so i started creating a new 2008 R2 install from scratch last night and chose to update just IE9 as the first install. I did that, rebooted and it didn't show up in Windows Updates, so i though GREAT.
I proceed to kick off the 100+ downloads needed before i left and left the console up.
When i got in to work this morning, the updater seemed stuck on 31 of 102 updates, this one in particular: KB288516. I rebooted the computer, because it wouldn't stop and just seemed stuck since last night, which these updates should only have taken about
an hour to install at most. I log back in and sure enough, it now shows Internet Explorer 9 at the bottom of the update list as being needed for install.
I believe this is Patch Tuesday week, so maybe they screwed up something with the Windows Update detection engine, because it worked fine on Monday when i had to update IE9 on 2 VMs that i created.
