Windows user considering a change

Sorry it's not really relevant to the forum section, but I couldn't find anywhere better.
Basically I've been using Windows all my life so far, except for some time spent with Linux (various distro's), and I'm just wondering if a Mac is really for me.
The main issue I have is that I will NOT be selling my current rig and putting the money down toward the Mac. I'm a gamer, and to put it bluntly, no Mac will touch this machine.
I also dabble in web development, audio design, machinima and other such creative outlets, which I hear Macs are good for. The question I pose to you today is:
Is it worth me getting a Mac just for my creative side, and if it is, what sort of spec should I be looking at?

Yeah... I think a Mac mini is a good call. It even comes up on the Apple Store refurb (Special Deals) page.
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTE3NjY
The one that's there now, with the bigger drive and 2GB of RAM would be a good choice, especially for $100 less than the usual $799 price. The new version, release recently, has the NVIDIA graphics (instead of the previous Intel graphics), and you can now attach two displays (instead of only one).
You can set it on top of your PC and use a KVM device to switch, or set it up separately.
It's definitely not a gamers machine, but it should be able to handle the other things you mentioned. If you decide to get a better Mac later on, resale value for Mac mini seems quite good. I've been looking for an old used 1.66 GHz Core Duo Mac mini (from the first run of Intel Mac minis released over three years ago) to use as an HDTV box, but the asking price is still around $300. After over three years, it has 50% of its original $599 value. Three years for computer is forever...

  • To Windows Users Considering Mac Pro

When I first was considering a mac pro ( I have just bought one a week ago - end of june 2011 )
My first few posts prior to purchasing on here were probably very defensive and pushing for reasoning.
Only after purchasing do I understand why I got the responses I did.
I dont want to say that MAC is God like.
    But its close to it
So having been a windows user for so long and just switched over ( yes it did cost a lot but its worth it! )
Here is what I have found useful
1, The speed that it loads and shuts down is just **** dreamy! Its the way computers should run! ( windows is horrific compared on that ) That was always my biggest peeve with windows, it took forever loading its crap in the background
    2. The quality is incredible. Really solid built, super thin! ( I actually cant stop looking at this **** notebook....)
    3. Its packed with stunning applications that you would have to pay tons of money for on windows
    4. I love the magnetic charger, that prevents tons of issues that regular notebooks have with the inside part becoming loose after a few years of pulling out and putting in the cable.
    5. The trackpad, swipingin, clicking, tapping... **** its beautiful!
    6. Their magic mouse ( i got that too ) is just magic!
    7. Everything is so much more organized, streamline and cleaner ( great for business )
I am sure i will find many more things, but for now... if you are thinking of getting one and cant understand why they are so **** expensive.
There are lots of reasons why. I wont give you the speal about BMW or such as I know there are lots of great PCs out there, but it really cant be compared its in a class of its own and once you have it... well i honestly cant see myself going back
In fact... next in line is replacing my desktop  ( but i may wait till next year for that )
    thanks
Oh and.... sorry mac guys for yanking your chain and thanks for being patient with me previously
As they say once you have mac... you wont go back!

Actually, they're not so expensive, considered from the standpoint of value. I purchased new computers, but the old ones - one of which I've kept close tabs on since its OS9 days - still work fine. There are a few excellent Windows laptops, true, but every time a friend has used one, he says it died after three or four years.
Unibody construction and the '09 trackpad changed it for me, and maybe Spotlight.

  • Cannot add/ change user account - error with Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service

    Hello
A few days ago my computer went wierd.
I cannot update windows because I get no results when I use "Windows Search"
My metro UI doesnt work properly. I cannot use it.
Somebody said that it could be that my User Account could be corrupted.
I tried to create I new one, but I could do the first steps, because the computer doesnt respond when I click "Change my account" in controlpanel.
    I get errorlogs like this:

    What can I do?

    Hi Intesabra,
Have you made any modifications to the machine before the issue?
First of all ,I would suggest you to update the machine manually.
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Check for updates.
I also suggest you to perform a full scan with the antivirus software to eliminate the virus issue considering this issue is a little wierd. We can do this in safe mode to improve the scanning quality.
Run "services.msc" to check the status of "User Profiles Service" and ensure it is running.
Run "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" or "sfc /scannow" to check the health of the whole system files.
Considering this issue occurred recently, we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous point.
    Best regards

  • Can't change Window User's Profile Location

I would like to change the Window User's Profile Location. I've followed the instructions on page 85 of User Management Apple's document unsuccussefully.
In the Windows tab of Group Management, I have enter my new SMB sharepoint :
    User Profile Path : \\servername\sharename\folder\usershortname
The Window Client's computer is recocgnized by the OD / PDC Leopard server, I can login without any problem, but at the end of the Window XP session's, the profile is still saved at //ODMasterServer/Users/Profiles/.
The strangest is that in XP I perfectly reach \\servername\sharename\folder\ and can write what I want within.
I think that the Leopard PDC doesn't send the correct information to the client for the profile folder path's.
Where can I verify or change it ?
A solution would be to write a login script for the client, any idea of a short script ?

    I solve partialy my problem.
I use a Windows Server 2003 with file sharing.
    1) Add the server the same way you add an XP client computer in the OD domain.
    2) Create a file sharing using the server admin console (DO NOT USE the file sharing on the properties of the file) choosing full access for admin and read/write access for users
    3) In the security of the shared directory add the OD admistrator's (be careful domainnamedomainadmin not only domain_admin) and give him full access.
So apparently the PDC and the SMB doesn't work correctly in Leopard Server apart for the file /Users/Profiles.
It works more or less fine.
Now, I want to hide the home's and profil's file to the other users (mac or windows).

Watch the Apple Online Store’s refurb section for non-Retina 2012 models. The 2.9 GHz model is a very nice machine and there were some available within the past week. Check daily, because they go fast. I bought one last summer and I love it, but I am not playing games on it. B&H Photo still has some 2012 models, also.

It's hardly a downgrade to those of us who care about being able to upgrade our Macs ourselves if and when we need or want to do so. For me, having a FW800 port is also a consideration.

  • We have non admin users on Windows 7. They change the homepage and it works for that session. When they close the browser, and restart it again the default homepage is shown.

    Windows 7 Sp3. Using Firefox 7.01
    Non admin users.
Can change homepage to whatever they like and it will work.
BUT when they close firefox and open it again the home page goes back to default setting

    Update.
    This looks to be a mozilla.cfg setting. If I take out the pref("browser.startup.homepage","ourwebpage");
it loads the basic firefox "FirstPage"
How do I get around adding a default homepage that can be changed by the user?
    I have tried adding
defaultPref.. .. then the webpage info.. BUT it retrurns a Failed to read the configuration file. Please contact your system administrator.
Do I need to create a prefs.js file?
And if I do how do I get it to work for each new user that logs into that machine?

  • Sharing one "Email account" between two Windows "user account" in a "Global Inbox"

Context: Two "windows user accounts" on a Windows XP PC, having the same email address. The "Local folder" is placed on a "All users" directory and acounts settings specify a POP server with a retention period of 30 days.
Problem: When User B ask for reception of messages, he received all messages already read by user B. (this probably due to separate popstate.dat).
On a previous PC two years ago, we do not had this dupplicate reading.
If you have a solution, could you also cover the Windows 7 case.
    Regards
    Dto75

I strongly suggest you get the whole profile in the same folder hierarchy before you even consider moving to windows 7.
    Windows XP has Program File
Windows 7 has Program Files and Program Files (X86) your executable goes in the x86 one.
    XP has applications data
    Windows 7 has appdata
In windows XP Thunderbird's profile is in application data in windows 7 it is in appdata/roaming
If you open explorer the old locations appear to be there, but they will not work to locate Thunderbird's disparate parts of it's profile
And so the list goes on. Hence none of the locations you know will probably exist under windows 7 so if parts of the profile are pointing to locations that have changed, only grief awaits you.

  • Leopard server and windows users

We run a mac + pc environment with some users on macs, many on pcs, and our office server is a windows exchange for email etc. As a multi-location consulting firm, we need to set up a good collaboration system that is hosted internally (to preserve confidentiality) and allows us to create a web-based knowledge creation, sharing and collaboration environment. We have looked at some of the new web services offers, but all are hosted by the providers.
We are considering buying a mac leopard server and have the following questions:
1/ will windows users be able to use the wiki, chat, calendaring and podcast facilities from their laptops without any problems, and will they have the same easy user interface?
2/ does the wiki server enable group collaboration like:
2a/ sending out email notifications on new posts (without changing our exchange server)
2b/ allowing groups to create project and team specific areas
3/ The problem we face is one of adoption. If we can make this as easy as facebook, then lots of people will migrate within 48 hours. But is this possible with the leopard server?
4/ finally, we are based in Singapore and our offices are all in Asia? Do we need a lot of experienced Apple-savvy technical people to create any of these applications, or is leopard server as easy to use as a mac is for a home user?
Any thoughts or inputs would help. FYI, alternatives we are evaluating are jive software's clearspace or basecamp or zoho's web based suites.
    thanks / Suresh

Yes, the web based interfaces work just fine for both OS's, the chat server is using jabber (clients on about every OS) and the calendaring is using the standards based iCalendar format.
2/ does the wiki server enable group collaboration like:
2a/ sending out email notifications on new posts (without changing our exchange server)

I don't know of functionality to send out e-mail notifications on new posts, but you can subscribe to RSS feeds of things posted in the blog section of the wiki server. I'd need a little bit more information to understand what you're looking for as far as creating project and team specific areas.
3/ The problem we face is one of adoption. If we can make this as easy as facebook, then lots of people will migrate within 48 hours. But is this possible with the leopard server?
On the front end most of this stuff is very easy to use, and is in my opinion even simpler than facebook and such.
4/ finally, we are based in Singapore and our offices are all in Asia? Do we need a lot of experienced Apple-savvy technical people to create any of these applications, or is leopard server as easy to use as a mac is for a home user?
It's pretty easy to set the server up as long as you read the documentation. There's also a lot of resources online if you have problems (like this forum). It would probably be helpful to have someone familiar with LDAP systems and at least some command line usage on the server, but like I said, the documentation is pretty good. You can go read it to get an idea at http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
    Hope that helps out some.

  • Problems video chatting with Windows users

It seems like everytime I try and video chat with a Windows AIM user there is a problem. Ralph and other are very techy and know how to resolve these issues. Problem is that 99.9999999% of te people I chat with are not so the advice to resolve these issues proves to be worthless. However me and this individual were able to successfully do audio chat instead. Often when there is a problem like this do I switch people over to Skype which works far better going from Windows to Mac and vice versa and is easier to use. Generally I think iChat has better video quality over Skype, but only with Mac users.
I know there are others here that also have this problem and for you do I encourage the same resolution as bad as it is, but it seems to be the only way to chat with a non techy person who is on a PC.

    Hi,
Any non Microsoft app on a PC has to allowed through the Firewall as a Exception  (Or at least since Service Pack 2 for XP when Windows got a firewall).
In XP it goes like this
Open the Control Panels (I prefer the classic view)
    Open the Firewall
    Click the Exceptions tab
In the new window click the Add Button
Navigate through Program Files to the AIM Folder and the relevant AIM#.exe to allow the app itself. (#  is the Version Master number)
Back in the Exceptions window also Allow UPnP
    Enable UPnP in their Router.
I am not sure it is that different in Vista or Window 7
If there router does not have UPnP then open port 5190 and 1024-5000  (AIM video does not use all of these they are there to spread the load)
They would have to do similar things for Skype (although like AIM it has Fall Back ports below 1024 for logging in and Text Chatting that get around the firewall issue) other IM apps and On-line Games.
Of course if they are using some third party Firewall they would have to do the work there.
    Audio Chats V VIdeo Chats
Both apps use the same ports when it comes to Audio and Video Chats  (Tend to be the iChat ones)
I believe AIM still uses 4 ports (from the 1024-5000 range) for VId In, Vid Out, Audio In, Audio out, much the same way iChat 2 and 3 did.
It may pay for you to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth limit and try either 500kbps or 200kbps as the setting.
In earlier version of AIM (5.5 anbd 5.9) it was possible to reduce the Video quality at the AIM end (less frames per second) which allowed "Space" for the Audio part.
AIM 6.x onwards does not have this and the Video feed can be particularly Processor hungry.  Your lower setting will be fed back to them and their end will make an adjustment of what can be sent.
Some of this knowledge has taken me since 2004 to acquire.
I can see that applying it might be considered "techy"
I can appreciate that it can be very difficult to persuade a Windows user to change any setting once they have their machine "working" (at least as they want).
I realise this was not so much of a Question as being more of a discussion statement.
I am not sure that there is a real answer other than the one you suggest.

  • From Windows user: Leopard

    Hi all.
I'm a typical Windows user, never had any Macs in my life. And my English is not perfect, sorry
Being impressed by new iMac and all that hype around Leopard and having constant pressure from my kids and wife, I bought a brand new iMac 20", wireless mouse/keyboard and AirPort station. Brought it all home, installed included Leopard and was very excited.
Now, three days later I'm sitting here, quite confused.
What I want from my Mac is simple: a hub/controller for all our photos, music, videos, movies, etc. And a safe computer for my wife to read mail and go online and my kids to get crazy with games and stuff.
The way I was going to set it up was this:
    1. Replace my existing router with AirPort.
    2. Set a certain space on one of my network drives for iTunes library, photos, etc. I was going to use RAIDed drive, so back up wasn't really needed, but I was thinking that Time Machine will cover all my future needs (if any) in terms of having all important things backed up safely.
    3. Load all my media on that drive and share it with all machines in the house, Windows or Macs (this isn't going to be the only Mac in the family).
I bet you know already where I'm going with this. But first, Leopard bugs:
    1. Dashboard quit working for admin users (me and my wife) on the first day. But it works just fine for my kids. Still can't fix it. My wife is especially frustrated about this because she was going to use some of those items quite a lot.
    2. Eject button on keyboard and all eject buttons in Finder simply don't work. Period. The only way to eject a drive or image is to drag it to the Trash.
    3. AirPort setup was a pure nightmare. I plugged it in, connected it to the modem and the yellow light started to blink. I waited for 10-20 minutes, just in case, because manual says it should be steady green right from the start. Then fired its Utility on Mac, it didn't see AirPort at all. I installed Utility on one of Windows machines with the same result. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite comfortable with networking and everything was set up correctly. The only way I was able to "see" this thing is by wiring a Win machine to it and using Windows networking tool.
    4. After I finally managed it to work and all my machines were connected I plugged one of my USB drives into AirPort (just because I was curious). AirPort Utility couldn't see it, I mean it couldn't see the drive at all. I don't really need this but still can't fix it.
    5. And, of course , the whole notion of "image mounting" drives me completely NUTS. I understand that this is a different world with its own rules and stuff, but still... If I have a bunch of files on one drive and I want to copy them to some other drive and I don't want to do this manually, why CCC and SuperDuper ask me to "mount" some kind of a "disk image" (which, as I understood, could be "sparse"/good or "not sparse"/bad) and write those files to it? What happened with plain and simple "copy these freaking files to this freaking location"? :)))
    6. It turned out that Time Machine can work only with external drives. This is really strange. I know VERY FEW people who have only one computer. For those guys, having a separate FireWire or USB drive for each machine is a waste. The ONLY logical thing to do in this case is to have one drive/server on your network for all backups from all machines. Of course, this drive should be reliable (RAID or physical mirror). Also, having file versioning in Time Machine doesn't feel right. Modern drives are 200-300 Gigs. So, theoretically, if you have 200 gigs of files and all of them has been changed, you'd need at least 1 terabyte drive to store only 5 days' history. Not realistically, of course, but... They should explain it better, I think.
    7. I noticed bunch of other smaller things in Leopard that bother me but, in general, we like our Mac and I think that Apple will fix most of bugs in the next update or so.
    Now, a suggestion to Apple:
My family got 20 gigs of music, 4 gigs of photos and "unsizeable" amount of movies. If you really want our business then give us a possibility to load all of this on a NAS drive, share it with all machines on local subnet with parental control and control it from any machine that has been set as "admin" machine. Or something alone these lines. I'm really sick and tired of going to my Mac just to wake it up in order to continue listening iTunes on my Win machine while I'm working. And I can't set it to "never sleep".

Is this thing a full blown, non-scaled down Mac? Is the actual computer capable of everything that a regular, say, Macbook could do? Are there any disadvantages to it that hold it back from all the features?
Yes, on the inside it's a full computer, just in a smaller package. The hardware is quite similar to what was in the MacBook in its previous generation.
It's not deliberately "crippled" in any way.
Also, at the $600 STANDARD tech spec settings, can I run OS X smoothly and use all basic apps with maybe some light movie editing (iMovie/Final Cut)? Will it be really slow or what?
Sure can, and no, it won't be really slow. Encoding movies might take a few minutes longer. If anything slows you down doing basic tasks, it will be that the basic Mini comes with 1GB of RAM - you might feel that if you run multiple heavier applications at the same time.
What version of OS X does the Mac mini come with? Leopard?
Newly shipping ones will come with Leopard. Stores with old stock may sell you one that comes with Tiger or a Leopard upgrade disc.
Hows the transition from a long time Windows user to OS X?
Mostly smooth, and where there are differences, it's often surprising how much the OS X way "makes sense". Installing things takes a bit of getting used to, but once you work it out it'll become natural.

  • Windows user can no longer connect to my File Sharing IP address

    Hello,
Since updating to OS X 10.4.9, Windows users can no longer connect to my file sharing IP address.
I have had no problems when I was using 10.4.8, and I have re-checked both the Windows computer and my Mac to make sure that the file sharing connection should be possible.
I think this may be some sort of firewall / security issue (?) in that the 10.4.9 update has downloaded something which now "hides" my Mac at this IP address. I am unsure how to resolve this problem.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Much obliged, in advance.

Can the Mac connect to the PC?
Have you checked the Workgroup is the same on the Mac
    in Directory Access>CIS/SMB?
Have you tried turning off the Firewall for a test?
    Has the IP changed?
    Hello!
Thank you for the suggestive questions above. I haven't "tested" any of them because I simply became exasperated with the "change" in 10.4.9 and went back to system 10.4.8
Of course, now everything is right with the world and I can once again have my Windows computer connect to my Mac.
Thank you for taking the time in trying to help me -- much obliged.

  • Windows 8.1 Mail app and Exchange 2010 EAS partnership - "Make Windows user account an Administrator" to meet security requirements?

As the title says,  I have a new Windows 8.1 based device which I'm trying to connect to my Exchange 2010 box (SP3 Update Rollup 2).  I currently have my iphone set up as an EAS client with no problems.  I have an EAS policy on my mailbox
with the following settings surrounding passwords :
Require Password, Require Encryption, Allow Simple Password, Time without user input - 10 minutes.  Allow non-provisional devices is also checked.
The Windows 8.1 device has Bitlocker enabled, which meets the encryption requirement - I know this because the 1st time I tried this it moaned about Bitlocker needing to be enabled to meet requirements, though at that time the local user account on the Windows
8.1 device was an admin level account so it never mentioned this issue, it worked normally.
Now, while using a std user account on the Windows 8.1 device and trying to connect up via EAS, it complains that my local windows user account must be an ADMIN level account to meet the security requirements...?
    Anyone encountered this?

Did anyone solve this problem? I'm also struggling with this issue.
this is still a problem. I'm just hitting it now and it's not doing much for management's love of Microsoft devices.
Evidently, it has to be an admin to set the policies on the device to match the policies on the EAS. And once set, a user can be changed back.
But this is seriously not cool. Don't the "app" folks and the enterprise folks talk to each other?

Please run the english version" Saw other answers for windows users, I have a MacAir. never used any other language but English so I have no clue what the problem is.  I just want to update my phone and back it up.

Let's try a repair install of iTunes.
    Restart the PC first.
If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", and click "Change". Select "Repair" and click "Next" as per the following screenshot:
Can you launch your iTunes now?
