Windows Users file access SLOW

XServe 10.4.11
Connecting to my Home Directory with a XP machine. I can see all my files, but it takes forever to open them.
Launching AppleWorks 6 on the PC is fine, but opening a document off the server takes over 120 seconds to display. During the time it is 'trying' to open, it seems the PC is locked up.
This is happening on all our PCs as well. Our Macs have no problems opening the same files.
The same slow network access is happening when the PCs try to open Word documents stored on the Server as well.
What settings can I tweak (from the defaults) to allow my PC users to access their documents off the server?
We were hoping to eliminate the Netware Servers at our High School, but this test we are doing at our Adm Bldg is NOT going very well at all.

That wasn't it. Documents on PCs still take a LONG time (opening an AppleWorks 6 document for example on a PC took over 1 minute).

  • Windows Users can access shares but Macs Can't

Running 10.8 on the server and here is the below problem I am having
    1. Windows users can access the file shares read/write (even though they create permissions wrong, another day to takle that since I already tried ACL)
    2. Macs running 10.8 and Mavericks
Open the server in finder on a user machine. Can sometimes see the two share folders. Other times just get the spinning wheel.
Now if you are so brave to click on the folder then finder will spin forever.
It locks finder up so hard that you can't shut down the machine without holding the power button. Other programs will run just fine, it only affects finder.
I tried connecting from the mac with smb:// to see if it is an AFP issue but it just sits on connecting forever.
I looked through the logs and don't see anything. But my knowledge of logs is terrible.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

  • Auditing all users file access - too much information

Hi, I have enabled a GPO With the following: Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Advanced Audit Policy Configuration\Audit Policies\Object Access -> Audit File System -
    Success on a file server.
After that, I have enabled successful Create files/Create Folders on a folder for the built-in group Everyone.
That part works fine, I can see when users are creating files on the folders. But I also get a lot of Extreme amounts of other events logged in the Security log, and everything is coming from the backup agent running on the server (NetBackup in this case).
How come that a backup agent is creating the events like this? It makes filtering much harder afterwards. The business requirements is to audit Everyone who is adding files to a specific folder, not all the rest of the server. The server
    is Win2008 R2.
    Example:
An attempt was made to access an object.
    Subject:
    Security ID: SYSTEM
    Account Name: FILESERVER01$
    Account Domain: MYDOMAIN
    Logon ID: 0x3e7
    Object:
    Object Server: Security
    Object Type: File
    Object Name: \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy58\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-audio-audiocore_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18619_none_d4cab625fb3adf96\audiosrv.dll
    Handle ID: 0x3c4
    Process Information:
    Process ID: 0x1048
    Process Name: C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\bpbkar32.exe
    Access Request Information:
    Accesses: WriteAttributes

    Hi Steve,
I feel your pain, I turned on logging on a file server and found the security log filling 4GB in a couple of hours. I think the key is being very selective about what you audit. I found this article useful and it had some powershell and ideas for helping
make sense of the information overload - http://blogs.technet.com/b/mspfe/archive/2013/08/27/auditing-file-access-on-file-servers.aspx
In my opinion though you really need a third party solution to make this viable, two I've looked at are
    Netwrix File Server Auditor and
FileAudit which seem very similar in functionality and ease of use. These basically read in the event log to provide long term archive and reporting on it.
    Good luck,
    Tim

  • Time Capsule: Windows user could access all folders in TC

I have a new TimeCapsule (TC) 1 TB, 2 MBPs (latest Mac OS X) and 2 PCs - 1 runs XP and other runs Vista.
I had setup TC as NAS, allow users to access TC using account.
Each user in MBPs can access their folder and shared folder only, so it is fine.
Same for windows users, they can access their folders and shared folder only.
However I found that, if the windows user has the windows administrator privilege and has windows account password as same as TC disk password, then after logged-in windows machine, this user can access TC using Run:\\TCname then he/she can see all folders in TC and has read/write privilege on these folders. TC does not ask for any password (as long as the user has logged-in their windows machine) nor stop the user to access any folder in TC.
Is anybody has the same problem ? Or you can try yourself and see if it happens on your system ?
Apple: can you fix this, this is unwanted "feature" ?

SMB is blocked by every responsible ISP. As indeed it has to be due to the level of unprotected shares on computers on the internet.
If the TC is the main router.. and you have port forwarded SMB ports wan to lan.. be thankful your ISP has blocked it so your files and network are not hacked.
The right way to do this is a vpn router.. with the TC working as bridged device on the network.
Windows does not offer AFP which is the only other protocol Apple offer in the TC and is the only one exposed to internet.

  • Windows permissions file access

    Hiya,
I'm using cfdirectory to list files and subfolders.
Is there a way I can display files for people in a certain group?
People who aren't in the groups cannot see the folders or files.
I've created a group in activedirectory, given it modify/ read&execute/ read access.
However all users can see the files and folders, when they try and download a file they get the windows password prompt.
I'd like them not to see the files and folders at all.
    Can anyone help?
    Thankyou

I certainly don't think it would be simple, as cfdirectory works in the context of whatever user ColdFusion runs as and has no concept of NTFS permissions as such.
You could possibly do something with createObject("dotnet") and use the actual Windows objects to examine the ACLs on the file then do something with that? Essentially bypass cfdirectory and use the System.IO.Directory classes from .NET to examine the directories and permissions, then use those to list the files they can access?
    Or I may be rambling.

  • Windows Explorer (File Utility) Slows When Selecting a QuickTime File

Windows Explorer (the file utility, not the browser) slows and sometimes crashes whenever the right pane of Windows Explorer points at a QuickTime file. CPU activity increases substantially, with the process WLXQuickTimeControlHost.exe consuming over half of the CPU.
I tried uninstalling QuickTime and the problem disappears (but of course now I have no way of playing QuickTime files). I reinstalled the latest version of QuickTime (7.5) and the problem returned. I also have QuickTime Pro.
Anyone else see this behavior? Any troubleshooting ideas? I have McAfee Virus/Spyware/Firewall protection and the system appears clean.

The villan was Windows Live Photo Gallery which contains WLXQuickTimeControlHost.exe.
Removal of Windows Live Photo Gallery solved the problem.

  • How can a Windows user remotely access their Home folder on a MacOSX Server

I have a staff member who would like to remotely access (ourside of our LAN) their Home folder on our Mac OSX server. Anyone know and willing to share the process?
    Thanks

    Hi Brad!
Generally, a VPN solution is best to allow someone access to your company network. VPN provides security and access to some or all of your company's network resources.
If AFP is allowed to pass through the VPN tunnel, then your user would connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "afp://servername".
Or if your user's home folder is also shared as a Windows share, your user could connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "smb://servername".
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Windows Users Accessing Public Folder

I would like to know the way to allow Windows users to access only the Public folder on my mac.
When I try to access folders from Windows I go to My Network Places and click on the icon representing my Mac then I'm prompted for a password; as I have only my account on the Mac I have to put my user ID and password, thus allowing access to all my folders - not only Public.
I know that Mac users can access Public, but how to allow the Windows camp to do that?
    17' PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

SharePoints is a great tool to allow access to peripheral drives, volumes, and the like. But you shouldn't have to use it to access the Public folder via a PC as you can a Mac. That is a very big question on the boards that has yet to be answered.
Apple says it happens. If so, what's the secret to accessing the Public folder via a PC.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

  • Migrating ppc xserve to intel xserve - windows users

I have a PPC xserve that acts as our DNS, OD master, mail and Windows Server.
I have 30 windows users that access this system.
We have a new Intel Xserve and I intend migrating from the PPC system and retiring, reassigning the PPC m/c.
From what I understand the simplest way to achieve this is to set the Intel server up as required with DNS and OD settings from scratch.
Then bring over the OD archive from the PPC.
I can then add the (PPC) saved plists for mail etc.
Move all the required data and set up shares.
This all seems OK, what I want to know is if anyone has any experience with the windows users once this has been done.
Do they have to be rejoined to the "windows" domain, will I have to make copies of all their local profiles, in case the profiles get trounced.
Any experiences would be appreciated, as usual the less work per m/c the better.

I did a little research on the boards here and it
seems the method of choice to move a mail server is
to use the trusty mailbfr. I am curious if anyone has
used this method to move a ppc mail to an intel
    mail?
I suppose the core components of the OS are the same
so my gut tells me this should work fine. Anyone know
    differently?
    Thanks,
    JL
    Yes, worked fine for me.

  • Server 2008r2 and windows 7 pro slow to no networkshare file searching and file access (green progress bar)

we are running a windows server 2008r2 sp1 domain controller and a 3com gigabit switch to which 7 windows 7 pro computers are connected. We are only using the windows server to distribute a few printers and as a network share (z drive).
we are storing all files (word documents only) centrally on the server (z share), and files are accessed and written to the z share.
Problem is that file access from the z share on the windows 7 client computers is at best buggy. we are able to browse the z-share, but as soon as we want to search the z-share for files (f.i. use file explorer with "content: memorandum") the green
progress bar shows and no search is performed. something like alphabetically sorting a directory on map/file name on the z-share also shows a green bar with no sorting. manually going to the files works.
One thing i noticed, sometimes not all files that one user created and stored on the server is visible and can be found by another user. I prefer to disable all offline file caching setting, because that feature is not used. no files should be made accessible
offline. i don't know where to change that on the server side.
I am reluctant to experiment on the server end (2008r2 sp1), so i tried a few suggested solutions on the client end (windows 7 client)
I tried disabling offline file caching
i tried properties (z share) ==> advanced and map optimizing and several options there
i tried disabling the smbv2 protocol and disabling the smbv1 protocol (using
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi command etc. posted by microsoft)
    i tried disabling windows defender
i tried accessing the z share via ip and server name (the share is mapped via its servername, e.g. dennis-dc1\share). still the same
file searching on the clients c drive ('own harddrive') works much better, file searching on the server also works.
any suggestions or solutions that i can test on the client side, as mentioned i am reluctant to change something on the server side. if a solutions works, i prefer to change it on the server side.

    Hi,
The issue could be due to windows indexing service taking long time in sorting and searching in mapped drives. Please try the steps belwo to disable windows indexing service or search service on the windows 7 client to resolve the issue.
You can click on Start and select Control Panel, click on
Programs and Features, go into the Turn Windows Features on or off section Scroll down the list and uncheck the box next to Indexing Service or Windows Search.
    Best Regards,

  • Windows File access very slow......

    Hi !
    I´m working with a DP800 Quicksilver, with OS-X 10.4.5.
(1,5 Gig Ram, 500 Gig Hitachi ATA 66 HD)
Via ftp, I got transfer rates (up-and download) Quicksilver
    to my linux-samba-machine of 10 MegaBytes / second !
    Via CIFS (OS-X Network environment),
to the same samba machine only 50 KBytes /second....
(windows xp, 2000, 98 AND the same mac (old harddisc, with os9.2+ thusby Dave) works with 3-5 Megabytes / second.
So what´s wrong with the filesharing under OS-X ?
(DNS Name resolution, ping etc. everything works fine)
    thank you for any comments,
    with compliments

    Hi,
Whether the issue occurs on using all systems (Windows 7/8/server) or only specific systems? Please test to access the same share folder on different computers to see the result.
Also try to install the following hotfix on that server to see the result. If client systems are Windows 8/8.1/2012/2012 R2, install this hotfix as well.
Transferring files by using SMB2 or SMB3 causes memory leak on a Windows computer
    https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2928360/en-us
Also here is an article for troubleshooting such network related issue:
[Forum FAQ] Troubleshooting Network File Copy Slowness

First of all pelase try "1.2 Check, Enable and Disable SMB Versions in Windows operating systems" - disable SMB2/3 to see if issue persists in SMB1. This is just for testing and you can re-enable after testing.

  • Execute Teststand as windows-user: which files needed for write-access

    Hello,
which files/directories do i have to set for write access?
    Normally windows-administrator can access everything.
But a windows-user has for example no write-acces to teststand\Cfg.
So sometimes i get the error-message that a file is write protected.
Is this somewhere explained in the TS-documentation that also a windows-user need write-access? I have this question from a client and i am not sure how exactly it is.
    Thx for info
Message Edited by OnlyOne on 07-10-2009 05:36 AM

    Hi OnlyOne,
With TestStand 4.1 and later, we changed the directories for the TestStand Cfg folder and the TestStand Public folder (formerly called the TestStand Users Directory). These changes allow a normal Windows-User to write to the TestStand Cfg and Public folders without having to specifically grant write permissions.
