Windows Vista - 32-bit or 64-bit

Hi all,
I'm building a new machine and I'll be installing everything from scratch. LR is pretty much the only heavy-weight program I use and the main reason for getting a new machine.
I'm wondering if LR would work better in 32-bit or 64-bit Vista? I know the 64-bit version would have higher memory limits available but in terms of computational power would there be a difference. I'd think not but I'd don't know that for a fact.
Thanks,
Nick

Nick,
Over the past 6 months I went from XP32-bit to Vista 64-bit, same machine with a fresh install.  I had the xp "switch" turned on to allow around 3.2GB memory of the 4GB installed.  The speed increase going to Vista 64 was close to double in most of the LR functions.  It is ABSOLUTELY worth migrating to 64-bit.
In the end though, my single core, hyperthreaded processor still would not allow me to use the adjustment brush since it basically goes to 100% utilization and stays there for 10 seconds for each small stroke and created streaks across the page when moving to turn the brush off.  I basically did not use it at all.  Thus, when I built my new machine a couple of weeks ago I decided to try Windows7.  Love it for LR.
So ... in my opinion you definitely want to go to 64-bit and Windows7.  The Windows7 has all the feel of Vista64 with (in my case) none of the conflicts, etc.  Four cores and 8GB of memory would also be my suggested minimum.
Hope this helps.
Jeff

For the last 3 or 4 versions of iTunes, and continuing in 11.05, the site recognizes that I have a 64 bit OS (Windows Vista) and downloads the 64 bit version of setup. Setup installs iTunes in the 32 bit application directory (Program Files x86) - it's not all that unusual to run a 32 bit app under a 64 bit OS - BUT whenever I connect any of my iPhones, I get an error message that say I cannot use the iPhone because the 64 bit version of iTunes is not installed.  The message then tells me to de-install iTunes and to install the 64 bit version.
Like I say, the 64 bit Setup version is selected for me, and it runs error-free, but I seem to have no control or ability to force the installation of a 64 bit iTunes app.  And all the iPhones are inoperative with the 32 bit version I have.  I have another PC, which I have held at an earlier iTunes release. Although it's a notebook, it's identical in every other way (OS & installed utilities and apps) to the desktop that has developed the problem, and my iPhones work fine with it, although iTunes on it is at the earlier release, and I have no intention of upgrading that version until I understand and have corrected the problem.
    Any ideas or suggustions?
    Thanks.

This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64 bit version of iTunes.
That usually indicates that your Apple Mobile Device Support has not installed. That's also what is being shown by the diagnostics (the driver is there but the application isn't).
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Windows Vista + SB Live! 24-Bit External (CAT Please Lo

    Hi,
Sorry if I have missed this but I am using Vista and I can't find a driver for my SB Li've! 24-Bit External sound card. I know Cat has been saying to use beta drivers but the beta driver says not to use it for the external model.
Can I get some clarification on what to do?
    Thanks,
    Kingers

    Hi Kingers!
The SB Li've! 24-bit External is listed on the driver chart (under the External cards), the latest update we have on that is:
    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="02%" border=0>
    <TBODY>
    <TR>
    <TD width="4%">Li've! 24-bit External</TD>

    *****32-bit and 64-bit support
    Q 2007 = January to March 2007
The chart is updated when more details are available, but I will put up a post if I have something more specific.

Have you tried System Restore? See:

If the initial instructions don't work, scroll down to the heading "If Your System Won't Boot"

  • Can't activate windows vista

I am trying to install Windows Vista Business (retail boxed) 64 bit.  The box didn't include 64 bit media and so I've downloaded it from technet. The install asks for the product key but it is not accepted "your product key cannot be validated.
Review your product key and make sure that you have entered it correctly".
I have been in a chat with microsoft for 2.5 hours so far and they have referred me to this forum. I don't feel that I am getting anywhere and I am incredibly frustrated.
I enclose the contents of the chat so that you can see what has already been discussed and what steps have already been taken.
You are now chatting with 'Ethan'.
    Ethan: at 10:05:35
Hello Craig. Welcome to the TechNet Online Concierge. How may I assist you today?
    Ethan: at 10:07:56
Excuse me, Craig, are you there?
    Craig Stenton: at 10:08:01
Hi Ethan. I believe I spoke to you yesterday. I have a retail boxed version of Vista that has been unused that I'd like to use, but it only includes media for 32 bit and I am trying to obtain the media for 64 bit. I was given a link to download the software,
which I have done but my product key doesn't work with the software - product key cannot be validated. The software that I have is Vista Business (box)
    Ethan: at 10:09:36
Thanks for your inquiry. In that case, you may claim a product key from the downloading page by clicking the "Product Keys" button.
    Ethan: at 10:10:06
Or do you still want to use that product key?
    Craig Stenton: at 10:11:07
That's ok if I can legally do that. The software will not be used by me and so I'm not sure the technet license should be used by another. I'm ok with it because I know that I have got a license for Vista. Is that ok legally?
    Craig Stenton: at 10:12:01
Also, now that Microsoft is finishing the technet program, what happens to the license keys? Will they become invalid at some point in time?
    Ethan: at 10:12:40
Technically, they will continue to work as usual. However, according to TechNet Licensing Terms, you must remove all TechNet products after your subscription expires. There is no perpetual use rights for any TechNet subscription.
    Craig Stenton: at 10:16:08
So how does that relate to this enquiry? If I use the technet license and then my subscription expires then I can no-longer use the technet product key. Is it ok to continue to use it in place of the one with the boxed product? If it will work technically,
and I can prove that I have one product key (that I am not using for technical reasons) is that ok?
    Ethan: at 10:18:06
In this case, I'd like to check your product key for you. Could you please send the key to [email protected] with "To Ethan" included in the subject so that I could know the issue better? Thanks.
    Ethan: at 10:20:45
I mean I'd like to check why the key can't activate your media so that I could tell you if there is any other solutions.
    Craig Stenton: at 10:22:01
My media only seems to install 32 bit but the license covers 32 bit and 64 bit. I need 64 bit media.
    Craig Stenton: at 10:22:46
My product key doesn't work with the 64 bit media that I have downloaded from technet.
    Ethan: at 10:23:38
Excuse me, you mean your product key is a 32 bit key, right?
    Craig Stenton: at 10:24:22
I have a product key and just want 64 bit software to work with it. I want it to be legally correct but to a point, in my mind, it shouldn't matter if the software has to use a different product key to replace mine.
    Ethan: at 10:26:43
Please note that product key and installation media must match with each other. Do you need me to check the type of your product key for you at this moment?
    Craig Stenton: at 10:27:07
There is nothing on the box to say that it is 32 bit only. It does say "includes 32 bit dvd and information on obtaining 64 bit dvd", which does suggest that the product key is for 32 bit and 64 bit. there isn't any information to obtain 64 bit media
    Ethan: at 10:31:25
Thanks for your information. In this case, I'd suggest you to contact our Windows Store support to see if they could provide you the retail installation media for you.

    Craig Stenton: at 10:45:28
But surely I can just download the 64bit software? I don't want to have to wait for a disk to be delivered and I don't expect to have to pay for it if it's available on download.
    Craig Stenton: at 10:46:19
The product key is on the Vista Business box. I can provide a photo if you wish
    Ethan: at 10:46:31
Sorry, I mean could you please tell me where did you  get your retail boxed version of Vista
    Craig Stenton: at 10:47:36
Oh, sorry. I can't be certain. Possibly PC World - I used them quite a lot at that time.
    Craig Stenton: at 10:49:05
I didn't buy it off ebay or other dubious sources if that is the purpose of your query. If I look back through our accounts I will be able to determine where it was purchased but that is a big task.
    Ethan: at 10:53:16
I just double checked it for you, Windows Vista product keys should work for both 36 bit and 65 bit versions.
    Ethan: at 10:54:11
**Windows Vista product keys should work for both 36 bit and 64 bit versions. Sorry for my typo.
    Craig Stenton: at 10:55:17
I saw that but I know what you meant ;-> so, now that we know that my product key is valid for 64 bit, how do I download the 64bit media? It must be available.
    Ethan: at 10:57:55
Just to confirm, your product key is for Windows Vista Business, right?
    Craig Stenton: at 10:58:50
    Yes, that is correct
    Ethan: at 11:02:37
Could you please tell me if you have used before? Also please give me more information about activating the media downloaded from our TechNet site.
    Ethan: at 11:02:55
**Could you please tell me if you have used the key before? Also please give me more information about activating the media downloaded from our TechNet site.
    Ethan: at 11:04:30
Sorry, I just noticed that you said the key is unused. Then could you please tell me the error message when you activate with the key?
    Craig Stenton: at 11:04:52
TBH, I'm not even sure I ever used it, but if I did, it wasn't for long. I purchased it so that I could support a couple of users with new Vista laptops but then downgraded them to XP due to problems (then) with Vista.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:06:14
The problem that I get when trying to use my product key with the download from technet is "your product key cannot be validated. Review your product key and make sure that you have entered it correctly"
    Ethan: at 11:06:48
In that case, could you please send the key to [email protected] with "To Ethan" included in the subject so that I could check for you if the key is still valid?
    Ethan: at 11:09:17
Excuse me, Craig, are you still there?
    Craig Stenton: at 11:11:10
yES, i AM STILL HERE. jUST SENDING THE EMAIL
    Craig Stenton: at 11:11:31
Sorry, caps on for typing the product key in my email to you.
    Ethan: at 11:12:02
It's okay, please take your time.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:16:24
I have sent the email to you. I have included photos of the product key and the message.
    Ethan: at 11:17:08
Thank you, please give me a moment to check it for you.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:19:47
    ok
    Ethan: at 11:23:57
Still checking. Sorry for the delay.
    Ethan: at 11:31:44
Thanks for your waiting. I have checked it for you, your product key is valid.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:32:23
OK, but it doesn't work with the software downloaded from technet so what do we do about it?
    Ethan: at 11:32:27
But I'm afraid it can be only used on one machine.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:33:06
It will only be used on one machine.
    Ethan: at 11:35:24
Our tool shows that the key has been used for activation before. Is that also on the same machine?
    Craig Stenton: at 11:37:40
If it has been activated before then it would either have been my machine, in which case it hasn't been used for a very long time, or a 32 bit version on the machine that I am trying to use it on, which would have been in the past couple of days.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:42:44
    Are you still there Ethan?
    Ethan: at 11:43:46
Sorry, I was taking to another customer online.
    Ethan: at 11:44:54
Could you please provide me the file name of your installation media?
    Ethan: at 11:47:34
Excuse me, Craig, are you still with me?
    Craig Stenton: at 11:47:41
    Yes I am
    Craig Stenton: at 11:47:56
Do you mean the file that I downloaded from technet?
    Ethan: at 11:48:09
    Yes, you are correct.

    en_windows_vista_x64_dvd_x12-40712.iso
    Craig Stenton: at 11:49:12
I understand that this is not Vista Business, which I queried in my chats yesterday and I was told that it is the same media and should be ok
    Ethan: at 11:52:13
Yes, the media contains Windows Vista and other editions. Normally, you may just claim a product key for Windows Vista Business, then you can install Windows Vista Business on your machine.
    Craig Stenton: at 11:54:14
OK, so can you help me with that please?
    Craig Stenton: at 11:54:42
It seems that I have the correct media, and my product key is valid so there shouldn't be any problems
    Ethan: at 11:57:21

    Craig Stenton: at 12:02:59
    yes
    Craig Stenton: at 12:03:12
    just bear with me
    Craig Stenton: at 12:05:06
I have done what you said and when I call the number it is an automated system that requires numbers from the activation wizard. I can't ebven install thde software to be able to get to that stage. I need my product keey to be made to wotk with the downloaded
media, or if it can't be made to work then I need to be supplied with a product key that will work
    Ethan: at 12:07:18
Please give me a moment to check it for you.
    Ethan: at 12:12:07

    Craig Stenton: at 12:14:35
I am completely stuck without somebody making it work.
    Craig Stenton: at 12:16:01

Okay, then you may post this issue on our support forums for further assistance from our support engineers. One moment please, let me locate the entrance for you.
    Craig Stenton: at 12:20:09

    Hi,
I'm a bit confused with this paragraph, as you said Vista already install on your computer, why did you say Windows can't be installed?
According to your description with your problem, it is Product edition and key are not match. Firstly of all, we must make sure the system you installed on your computer was
Windows Vista Business, not matter 32 or 64 bit.
Note: you can check current system edtion at System Properties.
After that, you can try to input your product key and activate your system for test.
If problem still presists, it would be better to provide the activation error message.

  • You Tube requires Flash update. Worked for laptop Windows 7 but not PC Windows Vista. Can you help?

You Tube said I needed latest Adobe Flash Player, so uninstalled old version and reinstalled latest version 11.6.602.171 on PC running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 32-bit OS.  My system says it's there, but it still won't work on You Tube - still get same message saying Ineed latest version.
Had same message on my Laptop running Windows 7 and it updated and works fine.  I use Internet Explorer 9.
Detailed Problem Description: Problem with downloading latest Adobe Flash update and viewing YouTube.  On PC running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 32-bit OS, You Tube home page red banner at top said I needed to install latest Adobe Flash Player but even after installing, it does not work and will not play most videos in browser and shows black screen with message still asking to download latest version.  Seems to be rather random as to which videos it will play and which ones it won't, although there may be some common link (see examples below).  I thought it might have been HTML5 problem but I have successfully played HTML5 and Non-HTML videos through Adobe test site (Adobe Flash Player Help/Video Playback Issues) as well as Stage Videos. (Note: Had same You Tube messages when viewing on Laptop running Windows 7 but that updated without problem.)
Ran Adobe Uninstall. Closed all other programs before reinstalling direct from Adobe (rather than You Tube link). No change.
Ran all Adobe troubleshooting suggestions listed at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-games-video-or.html#main_2__Disable_Ac tiveX_Filtering__if_you_are_using_Internet_Explorer_9_.
Removed browsing data and deleted cache, checked that Internet Tools\Safety\Active X filtering was disabled (but in Internet Option\Security, Active X controls are enabled), disabled Hardware Acceleration, restarted computer but no change to You Tube viewing.  Re-enabled, but no change.  (WOULD LOVE ADVICE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE IF I SHOULD KEEP THIS ENABLED OR DISABLED.)
I have updated graphics drivers for NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT- although had to do manually as NVIDIA auto system scan said "could not detect your GPU". Noted they said Windows Vista supports up to Direct X 10, but my system is running Direct X 11.  Had optional update message for "nVidia Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM 1.2, other Hardware NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT" on both PC & laptop.  Laptop downloaded fine. Tried to download on PC but was not successful. Error Code 80070103, possibly because system had already been updated? Current driver version 9.18.13.1407 - "Windows has determined that your current driver software is up to date".
Running Norton 360 but it did not block or indicate any problems with Flash Player download.
Problem URL: http://www.youtube.com/?utm_source=navclient (red banner at top of home page says I still need to download latest Adobe Flash).

    Dear Chris,
Thanks for reply.  I ran the recommened Adobe uninstall program so assumed it deleted whatever it should have, before installing new version.  When it didn't work I followed instructions in Flash Player help page (screen shot below) which said to delete the Roaming App Data/Macromedia/Flash folder and Roaming App Data/Adobe/Flash folder, which I did.
Below are screen shots of C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash files as they currently stand.  I have a fuzzy recollection that it was deleted at some point because I think I went searching for it during one troubleshooting session and it couldn't be found (but maybe I'm geting confused with the App Date folders?).  Anyway I presume these current files are all post-reinstallation as the dates are all 5 or 6 March (did them before and after midnight).  I'm on Australian time - not sure where you are. However, notice install.log date is 21/05/2010 and Flash Player Trust sub-folder is dated 6/09/2008.
When I right click on the screen of both videos that will and won't play, I just get a list of options starting at "Copy video URL" down to "About HTML5".   So not sure what you mean when you say "For the videos that do play, when you right click on them what version of Flash Player is reported at the bottom of the context menu?" as I can't see any info like this.  Do I click somewhere else?
If you are able to get the info you are after yourself, two videos that will work are:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLKlTN1JN7w and
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGbrFmPBV0Y
Also, with hardware acceleration enabling or disabling, the only place I can find to do this is through the Adobe Flash Help page http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-games-video-or.html#main_2__Disable_Ac tiveX_Filtering__if_you_are_using_Internet_Explorer_9_
and right clicking on the Flash Player info box, going into Settings and checking or unchecking the Enable box.  Do you know if there is another setting in my actual computer where I can do this and or there's some other setting I need to change?  There doesn't seem to be anything similar when I go through Conrol Panel - Flash Player.
    5. Delete all Flash Player browsing data
a.. Click Start > Control Panel.
      b.. Double-click Flash Player.
c.. In the Flash Player Setting Manager, click Advanced.
d.. Under Browsing Data and Settings, click Delete All.
    6. Remove Flash Player cache
a.. On your computer, select Start > Run. (On Windows 7, click Start and type in Search Programs and Files.)
b.. Type %appdata%\Adobe and click OK.
c.. Delete the Flash Player folder.
      d.. Repeat step 1 and type %appdata%\Macromedia.
e.. Delete the Flash Player folder.

  • My iPhone is not recognized by my Windows Vista or by iTunes anymore!

Hello all!  I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone can offer that would point me in the right direction.
I have an iPhone 4 (AT&T) that works fine.  I have a Gateway Fx MS2252 P-7805U laptop operating Windows Vista Home Premium at 64-bit.  I used to be able to plug my phone into my computer to sync it, but this past may my laptop caught a virus and crashed... I took it to a mom-and-pop computer repair place and they backed up my info and completely reinstalled all of Windows.
The problem is that now my computer is not working properly with my iPhone.  Here are the symptoms:
I plug in my iPhone and I get three short beeps, and it does not appear under My Computer or iTunes.
I uninstalled the Apple Mobile Device Manager driver and then plugged my phone back in so that it would re-install, but the install is always unsuccessful.
I plugged my iPhone into a different PC with iTunes and it works properly (as well as my USB chord)--so I know the problem is in my own computer.
Also, the version of Windows they gave me won't update.
I cannot update any of the drivers in Windows--when I try to update any drivers through the Device Manager, it just says that I have the most up-to-date driver.
No matter how many times I uninstall/reinstall iTunes, I keep getting an error message saying "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."  I've uninstalled any other CD burning software on my computer, but that does not solve the problem.
So all I can narrow it down to is perhaps something with the driver or registry.  I'd really rather not uninstall/reinstall Windows if it's possible to get around that...
Can anyone offer me some insight?  Or point me in the right direction? I would GREATLY appreciate any help! Thank you .

No guarantees, but you could startup to your Vista DVD and try repairing startup. Just choose the options that move you closer and closer to Windows fix options, not toward installation.

  • I have IQ507 product KT588AA-ABA... I was wondering is it a 32 bit or 64 bit system.

I have my friends IQ507 part number KT588AA-ABA..
The hard drive failed. I would like to know if the system is a 32 bit one or 64 bit.... How did it come from the factory...

Here are the specs for the HP TouchSmart IQ507 Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this computer was shipped with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit installed from the factory. Recovery disc set "Vista Home Premium 64b 83NAv6XrA3 SP1 + Supp 2 Recovery Kit" can be ordered directly from HP or from third party vendor ComputerSurgeons.com. You can also install a retail copy of Windows if needed.

  • How to Perform In-Place Upgrade of Windows Vista Home Professional amd64

I'm trying to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows Vista Home Professional amd64 but the setup process fails stating that I need to remove Windows PowerShell prior to the upgrade.
    I didn't have http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 installed so I couldn't uninstall it.
I checked Windows features and PowerShell and the ISE were listed.
I tried removing it (via optionalfeatures.exe) but it fails with 'An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed.'
I tried installing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried installing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried uninstalling http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried performing an in-placce upgrade again and it continues to say that Windows PowerShell needs to be removed.
I cannot remove PowerShell (or the ISE) via ocsetup.exe as no such option exists according to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff716463.aspx
I tried removing it with DISM via /online /Remove-Package /Disable-Feature, but "DISM does not support servicing Windows Vista with the /Online option."
I tried sfc /scannow again - same 'Windows
    Resource Protection' error.
I tried the in-place upgrade again and it still needs PowerShell to be removed.
There have been chkdsks and reboots peppered throughout this process.
I don't know what else to try & I  feel like I'm stuck in a possibly crazy catch 22 situation.
Note: This is a Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit machine.
For those that need more history on how I got here, I'm going to refer you to my 'Windows
Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' post in the, incorrectly categorized, Windows 7 forums.  In short:
Whenever I run Windows updates, all the updates fail.  It doesn't matter if I do one, all or something in between - they all fail.
I ran sfc /scannow but that fails with 'Windows
Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'
I tried performing an offline scan as well but that failed with the same 'Windows
    Resource Protection' error.
Not sure what to do at this point and I don't know what logs would be helpful for you to review at this stage (cbs.log, windowsupdate.log, other?)

Please try below and check if we can boot normally now.
    1.
Boot to Recovery console2. Use the backup
System registry hiv to replace the current hiv
    In the Recovery Console.
    In CMD, go to:
         %systemroot%\System32\Config\
    Run: ren system system.old
    Go to:
         %systemroot%\System32\Config\regback
    Run: copy
         %systemroot%\system32\config\regback\system %systemroot%\system32\config
    Restart your computer.
After that, please try to test if the server can boot to normal mode now.

  • ITunes not "seeing" iPhone except after reboot (windows vista)

I'm having the most irritating problem with my iPhone and iTunes. Every time I want to sync up, I have to reboot (at least once). For some reason, the USB connection makes that Windows sound like it's connected the device, but then it doesn't show up in iTunes to sync it.
Usually a reboot cures the problem, but I've not ever been able to successfully sync more than one time without a reboot in between.
I've tried all the ideas suggested at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305845
But none of those have helped. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    technabob,
What version of Windows Vista are you running (32-bit or 64-bit)? Please note that 64-bit versions of Vista are not supported as stated in the minimum requirements:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305703
In addition to iTunes and Quicktime, you will also want to remove/reinstall Apple Software Update and Apple Mobile Device Support as listed in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
If you are still having issues, you may want to test the iPhone in a new user, or use MSCONFIG to see if there is any software that might be conflicting with the iPhone. For more information on using MSCONFIG, see this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305415
    Good luck,

  • After rebooting my Windows Vista 64 bit system, could not access iTunes; after uninstalling I tried reinstalling, but it has been running for more than 24 hrs. Should I cancel installation?

I had been updating my Windows Vista 64 bit system and as a result of a problem, had to reboot my system. Afterwards, I was no longer able to access iTunes.  I got a message stating that there was a problem with some of the files associated with the application.  A phone rep at Apple's Customer Service provided me with emails linking instructions on completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. I did the uninstall, then checked for lingering iTunes files and couldn't completely remove some, but tried intalling the latest version of iTunes. It has been running for roughly 24 hours.  The status bar is green all the way across, and when I try to cancel, I get the following message: "Are you sure you want to cancel iTunes installation?"  I keep hitting "no," but am staring to wonder if there is a problem with the install.  Should it take this long if I have roughly 134 gigs of music?  I can still see the music in my computer's C drive, so I am worried that there is an error, perhpas because I didn't clear out all the lingering C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ and all the lingering C:\Program Files\iTunes\.  Any thoughts?

It is not just the HP. I have 3 HP computes and 2 Dell computers. 2 of the HP and 1 Dell suffer the iTunes internet block. Took me a while to figure it out also. But, the one thing that is different on the Dell, is that I can leave iTunes installed and not open it and everything works. As soon as I open it, internet access goes down. BUT secure sites (https:) works fine.

  • Windows vista 64 bit and ipod nano

Hi, we are having problems getting our 3 new ipod nano generation 5 to work on our windows vista computer. Itunes won't recognize them have tried to uninstall itunes but get a message to verify we have sufficient access to that key, or contact support personnel, and then we click ok and it stops the uninstall does anyone know how to correct this problem or what we need to do to get the ipods to work on itunes with windows vista 64bit computer? I saw an answer for a 32bit computer but read that it is different for a 64bit computer. Thanks!

I, too, am having the same problems. Very frustrating to have a nano 4 generation that needs only the latest iTunes software but a computer that requires 64 bit software.
If you get an answer, let me know. I even paid to have music loaded on my nano ipod yesterday and because it was attached to my computer, when I booted up, it somehow went to checkdisk mode and cleaned all the music out! Am ready to throw it out and get a non-Mac ipod instead. But if you have THE answer, I'd really like to hear about it. Thanks.

It looks like it's having trouble getting one of the iTunes preference files in. There's a couple in each user account (usually in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes and C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes).
Has a version of iTunes previously been successfully installed on that PC? If so, was it working properly prior to your doing the current installs?
What hard drive is your "Users" folder on? Is it the C drive or somewhere else?
If it's somewhere else, are your Program files also on that other drive or are they on the C drive?

Why can't I install Itunes on windows vista 64 bit? I have removed all apple software and repeated the reinstall many times but it fails.  I get this complicated error mesage and then the installer rolls back and fails.

I get this complicated error mesage and then the installer rolls back and fails.
I'd like to have a closer look at that error message please.
Generate the error message again. While the error message box is open, hold down the Alt key and hit the PrtSc key. Paste the screenshot into an image file (using a program like Paint), and save the file.
Start a reply here and click the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window. Click "Choose file", browse to the image file, select the file and click "Open". Now click "Insert file" to insert the screenshot into the reply.
