Windows Vista CTP 5308 on K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125)

I have a system based on the K8N Neo4 Platinum board and i was just wondering wether or not Windows Vista will run well on it, are there any issues to take into consideration in installing the February CTP of Windows Vista in a system based on this board?
any feedback would be much appreciated?

While not exactly the same motherboard they are very similar i have the MSI K8N SLI Platinum and windows vista beta 2 was pretty happy with it.Hope this helps.

I have a microphone i would like to use with my K8N Neo4 Platinum (MS-7125) and I was just wondering if the mic jack was powered or not because the microphone will not work.

hey, i tired that before did'nt work but now it did. But there still is a problem with the mic, the recorded volume is way too low, even with mic boost on.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) PINOUTS

I really do apologize to everyone if im sounding a little tiring on this matter, but im near the end of this journey and im just checking the last and final details before final assembly....
I was just going thru the K8N NEO4 Platinum manual and i started wondering what exactly do they mean when they label a pin "RES" or "Reserved" what does this mean? whats the difference between "RES: RESERVED" and "NC: NOT CONNECTED"?
the ATX1 main connector for the board sports the "NC" label on pin 12 while on my PSU that pin has a +3.3V line, and pin 20 has the "Res" label and again in my PSU that pin carries the -5V line, the manual has no notes on that,
so is it safe to assume that nothing will happen if i connect my PSU to the board?
I have a KMEPC PH Series 500W dual fan PSU, ATX 1.3 compliant and has both the 12V 4pin connector and the 20+4 main ATX power connector, it was the best bang for the buck down here and has 25 amps in the 12V rail which should be more than enough for my system.

RES/ RESERVED means that the pins are not in use and reserved for future needs.
NC/ NOT CONNECTED means that the pins have no connection, can be used in the future as needed.
The -5 volt line is a relic of the old ISA days, most newer MB and many P/S no longer use this.
The P/S connector has a few more 3.3v pins, with newer MB the 3.3v is not so much needed as the 12v rail is being used for more work, in the old days (really not all that long ago) like the KT133 era the 3.3v was used Extensively.
You are safe to connect your P/S up to your MB, Happy computing

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) DIMM Memory Setup

im planning to install two Kingston value ram KVR400X64C3A/512 on my K8N NEO4 Platinum board, this two modules although identical feature double side chip arrangement, i an also well aware from reading the board manual that dual channel installation of these modules will actually slow down the performance of the memory,
what would be the best setup for these to modules?
im planning on installing one module in DIMM1 and the other in DIMM2, is that the best recommendable arrangement for this type of DIMMS?
also this DIMMS use 2.6v, and the board default setup is 2.5v, should i leave the default settings or do i need to make any changes in the bios configuration for these to work properly?

I would go with a dualchannel config.
Confirm dualchannel mode on boot screen or with cpu-z software
    http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php
To compare differant memory configs, you can get a rough performance idea by running sisoft sandra mem.benchmark.
    http://download.guru3d.com/sandra/
Never go below RAM voltage recommendation.
I rather upper the voltage to 2.7 for best stability.

  • MOTHER BOARD K8N NEO4 PLATINUM MS-7125 (V3.0) ATX - USB 2.0 ISSUE

The USB ports are not functioning as 2.0
When I plug any USB device in, I get the message IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE
"This device could perform faster if you connect it to a high speed USB 2.0 port"
I've got WIN XP Service Pack 2, with the latest updates.
Also the 6.70 nforce4 drivers, and the 7.0 Bios update.
    Any ideas?

Well , is the connected device a true high speed USB 2.0 device.
The term full speed USB is USB 1.1 (12MB/s) and is often mistaken for 2.0 .
In antonio's case I think it's one of two things :
1)MSI have again a bios with only USB 1.1 controllers enabled which antonio have loaded.
2)The Xp native "Standard Enhanced USB 2.0" drivers is screwed up .
    Possible faulty installations are :
a: Installed USB drivers from motherboard CD
(not to be used for W2K/XP , only for Win9X/ME)
b: Installed Nvidia Chipset drivers before XP servicepack
Nvidia Warns :(Windows XP users must install Service Pack 1, at a minimum, prior to attempting to install this package. )
( Failure to do so will result in the inability to  support USB 2.0. )
    c: Some other windows/driver corruption .

  • New Build Update K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra 7125-010

I will report on the positive results of my build first. All installs went very smooth, no problems except for a bad floppy drive from the start which I did replace. I have 1 Sata hard drive on Sata controller #1. Installed XP Pro/SP2 Slipstreamed without doing the F-6 thing and had no problem with the Sata drive booting after install. I have a DVD/RW on IDE 1 as Master and a CD-Rom on IDE 2 as Master. The board is functioning very well for 5 days now. My only disapointment with this board, is the onboard sound. This is supposed to be better than my old K7N2 Delta L onboard sound. I am here to say, it is the very worst sound system I have ever heard. While getting the new build setup, I had a pair of $4.00 speakers hooked up and thought it was acceptable. When I hooked the build up to the rest of my hardware, which has a pair Altec Lansing speakers that sounded great with my old K7N2 Delta L, I was very shocked. Sounds like crap. Not much volume or other settings can make it sound worth a darn. Just can not figure out how the el-cheapo speakers sounded better than a pair of quality speakers. I have fooled with settings until the lady of the house is ready to pull my plug. Other than the sound issue, I do have to say this is one incredible machine. Guess if I really want quality sound or even something close, I will have to install a sound card.
    Regards; Pops'
EDIT: Open mouth and insert foot. I was not about to quite give up on getting some decent sound from this system. Opened the Nvidia Mixer Application again and started fooling with selections. On the first screen, I had choosen the " 2 Speakers Mode ". Well, I started playing with the selections there and selected " 7.1 Speakers " and that made all the difference in the world. Now it is very acceptable. I am not real picky, but just could not figure out what happened when I moved the build to my office which had the Altec Lansing speakers and it sounded like crap without changing any settings??? Long story short, I guess it pays much reward to keep picking away at the settings.
Now I can go to bed and not have that grinding on my feeble mind.
    Regard's again; Pop's the pooped.

Yep,the 2T setting is much slower compared to 1T.
What I did was this,I set the top row at auto,so that covers all the cas latencies.
Somewhere below is a second option on auto,I set this at manual.and changed nothing but the 2T to 1T.
One thing to note though, when I build my system I had some nvraid complaints when booting, still after disabling them all.
It needed a cmos reset to work properly.
Also I noticed in memory section from bios two settings in the bottom row.
    read preamble value
    max Async latency
They were both on 6ns. Setting them on 5ns makes things a little faster but also made my windows show some error messages just out of the blue.So I kept them on 6.
Now after a bios flash without resetting the cmos they were both set at higher numbers, thus more stability at a cost of some speed.
Again I had the nvraid complaints,so I needed to reset cmos (which is commonly recommended, even by MSI) and noticed the 2 memory settings are back at 6ns.
This led me to believe the board picks this up automatically after a clear cmos.
So no need for you to change any setting in bios except for the 1T option.
You will understand what I mean when you visit this bios memory page.
On a side note,I run at stock speeds also, except for the cell menu,I use agressive timings as enabled, speeds up your ram a bit also.
Ofcourse you have to try if it works on your system since you got different memory compared to mine.
    Goodluck...

  • Best Drivers for new K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra 7125-010

Looking for just a little clarification on which drivers to load for this board. It is on the way with my CPU and should be here tomorrow. In reading through some of the posts, it seems to be a good idea to load the most recent drivers right from the start and not even use the CD that comes with the MSI board. Below is a list of the Drivers which I "think" are needed.
    Graphics Video Driver; 78.01
    Nforce AMD Driver; 6.66
    Audio Driver; 4.62
In doing some further reading, it seems I may need the following also but am not sure??
    Windows XP Unified Driver; 5.10
    Which includes the following:
    Audio; 4.42
    Audio Utilities: 4.44
    Ethernet; 4.42
    Gart; 4.36
    Memory Controller; 3.38
    SMBus; 4.04
    Installer;4.46
    IDE NVIDIA; 4.46
My plan is to setup the build with 1 WD 37.6 Sata drive as the boot drive and only the drive to start with. As for my Internet connection, I am going to use my USB Gigafast Wireless to connect to my D-Link DL-524 wireless router. I am going to Disable all of the onboard LAN features. Part of my confusion at this time is, do I need all of the Windows XP Unified Driver package??? Thanks in advance for any help in clearing up my confusion. Also, is there a specific order in which these should be installed??
    Regards; Pop's

No problem Pop,besides,I'm 42 now and still love to build on my computer
As for the link, you need the "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2"
or the one just above it "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions Version (exe) 1.2.2.1"
It will uninstall the current driver that was installed with the mainboard driver cd,and should install the newer afterwards, you can check in hardware device manager if the driver version is the newer for cpu after reboot.
Haha, yes,I had the same feelings before I build this system, reading all msi forums regarding mainboards.
And all I read was problems after problems. But I have another system based on the KT3ultra,which I build 3 years ago,and I'm still pleased with this system so I decided to stay with MSI for now. Also I noticed the problems were/are the same on the Asus platform, seems common on nforce4 mainboards.
As for building, just take your time,I had a slight incident with placing the heatsink+fan on the cpu socket, apparently in the corners of the cpu bracket is a small ledge(Énglish is not my nature language so don't know if I use the correct word) ,I couldn't get the retention lever in place, needed a lot of pressure and I became scared of damaging things.
So I waited a few seconds and tried again, suddenly with a loud click, the retention lever fell in place, the heatsink was hindered by this ledge in one of the corners from the bracket. So you have to place the heatsink correct and don't overuse the pressure you need for the retention lever.Slowly increase it,and all will go well.
Also I noticed the pcie graphics card fell right over the retention clip that holds it in place right besides the northbridge fan(well, actually on the left side from the fan),so installed once,it's very hard to get your finger behind to replace the card for example,or to clean it out from dust. But I used a small tool to get behind and press the clip for card removal(a bended metal tool,so I need to be carefull using this)
As for sata drives,I started with an ide to be on the safe side, but I do know you need the driver floppy disks for using the sata drive.
Can't help you any further with that for now, when I buy sata2 drives no doubt I also will need to check if I need a bios update etc.But that's with a smooth system already running,so I can take my time and redo any steps I made if things fail.
That's why you need to do the correct order of installing software,it's much easier then to fix problems that may arise.
Well, goodluck and don't be afraid, just take your time.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) Northridge Fan

I was just wondering just how much thruth is there in some post ive read on other forums regarding the need to do periodic maintenance on the Northridge Chip fan, in order to keep it quiet and functional.
Some people say you need to take it off every now and them to clean it and possible even put some lubrication on it, is this recommended?
Whats the best way to do this?
    Thanks on any feedback...

Hm, I cleaned it several times, but never removed it!
And i lubricated it also several times with sewing machine oil.
The funny thing is,I received a replacement fan from MSI which looks solid, but just before I used several drops of the oil because I didn't care anymore for the old one
and now some weeks later the replacement fan still awaits to be mounted since the original one now stays quiet  ???
I do have the fan running at 5400rpm max. , running it higher will no doubt bring back the noise sooner then later.
So for now I wait till the noise comes back again, then I will use the replacement fan.

  • Single Channel Dual Channel Question, K8N Neo4 Platinum

Just putting together a machine for the Daughter. Using MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum board 7125-010, MSI NX6600GT PCIE 128 Video card with AMD64 3700 CPU SD and a 1 GB stick of Crucial dual sided memory, CT12864Z40B, DDR 400 3200. The rest of my parts arrived and just got it all together and booted into the Bios. The boot screen tells me the memory is DDR Single Cannel, 64 bit running at 3-3-8-3 and 2T timings. I have been into the Bios setup, but had let the memory boot at Auto settings. Is what I am seeing on this screen OK because there is only one stick of memory installed? Or am I just confused as normal? I was thinking it should read Dual Channel, but I am hoping that is just my backwards thinking at times. I wish all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks in advance for the guidance.
    Pop's

JayBee; Thank you very much for the quick response. The Daughter decided to go with the 1GB stick to begin with so as to possibly add another 1GB stick later. I don't think she will need it myself, judging by her computer use. She does no gaming or multi-tasking, so there probably will be no need to add more memory in the future. I was just wondering if there is any noticable performance hit by using a single stick vs a pair of matched 512's?? I used the same MB as in my sig, but noticed the new one has an upgraded BIOS. I hope it is an improvement, because I have yet had no problems with my machine which has the V1.6 BIOS. This new one which is about 2 months newer than mine has a BIOS V1.A in the bios screen. At bootup it is identified as ( 6A61FM49C-OO ) what ever that means. I read the forum daily and have noticed you are very active and consice in helping folks out. I very much appreciate your time and effort that you give freely. Hope you have a very safe and happy holiday season and SANTA is very good to you. I think we as a group need to get SANTA up to speed on gift giving in the computer upgrade department.

  • Can I put an old 20GB IDE HD into the K8N NEO4 Platinum Board ?

I was just wondering if you can install a old Maxtor 20Gb IDE hard drive into a brand new system built around the K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) and used it in conjunction with a brand new Maxtor Diamondmax 10 SATA150 80Gb hard drive, for a total hard drive space of 100Gb ?
if it possible for new sata and old ide hard drives to co-exists in the same system ?

    Quote from: syar2003 on 23-January-06, 05:00:53
Yes , you can do that .
Only advise is to put the old udma66 disk on it's own ide cable .
You would want to install th OS on the sata drive , make sure not to have the ide disk connected during install
or it will host the OS system files and become the system disk (default win installer choice to take the first drive it sees , and
ide is always prior to satas in bios).
Then after OS is all setup , shut down and connect the remaining disks .
So the procedure would be, to install the sata drive first, the optical drives in IDE secondary and when everythings done, the old 20Gb drive in the primary IDE, its that the way of it ?
what do you mean by "put the old udma66 disk on it's own ide cable" ?

  • MSI K8N Ne4 Platinum MS-7125

    Hello,
    I have a problem with K8N Neo4 Platinum MS-7125  (PCB 1.0A) mainboard.
I connected onboard optical audio with my amphi. But its give only 2 channel audio.
I want take 5.1 channel audio from onboard optical output.
I downloaded and installed last drivers from MSI web site. But my problem is continue.
How can i fix this problem. I use Windows Xp (SP3) Turkish. Are you help me this problem?
    Thanks.

Quote from: Stu on 28-May-09, 01:35:43
I believe it will only give 5.1 output if your source (DVD, etc) is 5.1. Otherwise, if you're playing music, then as music is 2-channel stereo, then obviously you'll only get 2-channel.
I think you can look in the audio driver control panel, for a 'stereo expand' option, or something similar, which will 'fill' your speakers with 2-channel audio.
    Hello Again,
    I've used file format "MKV"
I've used AV Receiver "Yamaha RXV-795"
when I try to click Center or Subwoofer at the test programme of the MSI without using  any film file, I don't get any  sound.
    Thanks

  • Vista Sound problems with K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum

I wonder if anyone have gotten the sound to work under 32-Bit Vista RC1 (build 5600) on the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI (MS-7100)? Installation of the, by MSI, provided XP driver (Creative_audio_32-64bit.zip) seam to work, and the device looks installed in Device Manager, but still no sound... Also, the icon for volume control in the icon trey detects that there is no sound card installed.
Anyone with a similar problem? Any solutions? Suggestions?

I have just tried loading Windows 98SE on a K8N Neo4 Platinum based system - don't laugh, it was an experiment and worked (sort of . . .).  I failed with Windows 3.11 !
I put a single 512Mb PC3200 stick on the motherboard and Windows 98SE appears to have loaded although the "Add new hardware wizard" is having fun .  Following installation, it takes forever and a day to boot - I guess because it is trying to make sense of all these strange devices ?

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum random lock-ups and BSOD

I built a new PC about 3 months ago and from day 1 it has always locked up / frozen at random intervals. Sometimes it also BSOD's with a Machine Check Exception. Seems to lock up / freeze more often when have multifple windows open eg. Multiple IE running but really is random. I have replaced the Mobo and Ram but keep having the same issues. Have tried a clean install but no luck either. Did a clean install on an old IDE HDD and seemed fine but it did not have all of the software that I run on the SATA drive. Thinking the SATA drive may be the issue? Please Help!!!

    Seemed fine?
There isn't really be any difference between an IDE drive and a sata.
Except that the sata drive needs some drivers as your installing the os.
Check your ram timings in bios but likely it's your psu.
Which components are on which rail?
The ones that use the +12v are your cpu, cdrom, dvdrom and graphics card.
Try disconnecting both roms and see if it improves things?
